Whale Watching
Every year, approximately 26,000 gray whales migrate from the frigid
waters of the Arctic region to the warmer waters off of Baja, California.
Their migratory path is over 10,000 miles long and takes them to their
customary breeding grounds. The San Diego coastline is one of their
passing points on this yearly voyage, and a great place to take in this
spectacle.
According to the Birch Aquarium in San Diego, gray whales are most
often seen off the Sand Diego coast from late December through
March. At the peak of the migration, a dozen or more whales can be
seen together at a time. These mammals often dive into deep waters
for three to five minutes and then rise through the surface to “blow.”
It is common to see the whales from the coastline, and two of the
best vantage points are at Cabrillo National Monument or the cliffs of
Torrey Pines State Beach. Another opportunity for whale watching is
aboard one of the whale watching cruises. Many charter boats offer
this service from December through March, and the prices are quite
reasonable, averaging about $30 for a two hour cruise.
