to my fellow
Welcome to IFC Recruitment! We are thrilled that you are interested
in learning more about the fraternity experience at Cornell. Your time at
Cornell will likely be filled with amazing experiences. To make the most
of your college experience, I strongly encourage you to explore Cornell’s
fraternity community. Our fraternity system is truly unlike any other—with
the third largest Greek community in the nation, two co-ed fraternities,
and over 30 countries represented throughout our 36 chapters, we truly
believe that there is a fraternity for everyone at Cornell.
As a fraternity member, you’ll experience innumerable opportunities
and benefits unique to the Greek experience. From community service
and leadership opportunities, to academic support and professional
development, going Greek will allow you to form lifelong friendships with
your peers while growing as an individual. Specifically, our fraternities
provide means for you to excel socially, academically, and professionally,
as well as opportunities for incredible leadership positions. The average
GPA of an IFC fraternity member is consistently higher than that of a
non-Greek Cornellian. We take great pride in this achievement, as it is
unique to only a few universities across the nation. Additionally, joining
a fraternity provides an excellent academic support network including
tutoring, academic advisors, and study hours.
When I arrived at Cornell, I had absolutely no intention of joining a
fraternity. However, as I met fraternity members on campus who were
extremely involved on campus and eager to learn more about me,
I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about
the fraternity community. Whether you are unsure about joining or
completely certain, I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity
to meet new people and expand your network.
Looking back at my years at Cornell, I cannot imagine my college
experience without the friends and brothers I have met by joining
a fraternity. No matter what you may be looking to gain during your
college experience, there is a fraternity that will fit your needs. Fraternity
recruitment holds no obligations, and recruitment events are designed
to be an informal and relaxed way to meet new people. Above all else, I
encourage you to be yourself and have fun. I look forward to seeing you at
recruitment events, and I hope that we will share the same extraordinary
undergraduate experience throughout your time at Cornell University.
Sincerely,
Sam Turer ‘18
EXPERIENCE
Joining a fraternity at Cornell opens the door to limitless opportunities and
lifelong friendships.
The Cornell Greek community enhances your personal growth and
individuality while linking you to a brotherhood that shares your goals and
values. As the third largest and most diverse fraternity community in the
nation, our fraternities will offer you an unforgettable college experience!
Academics
Community Service
Fraternity members are driven
to succeed in the classroom. On
average, the average GPA of an IFC
fraternity member is consistently
higher than that of a non-Greek
at Cornell. To ensure academic
growth, each chapter prides itself
on strong peer and alumni support.
From peer mentoring programs and
workshops on time management
to study hours and study groups,
your fraternity will equip you with
the tools to achieve academic
excellence.
Leadership
A fraternity is the ideal place for
students to develop their leadership
skills. Fraternities are the only
self-governing organizations on
campus that allow students to
truly shape the future of their
groups. Perhaps that’s why 85% of
the student leaders on more than
800 campuses are involved in
fraternities and sororities. At Cornell,
each chapter offers a wide range of
chapter leadership opportunities, as
well as leadership retreats, guest
lecturers, and scholarships.
Last year, Cornell fraternity members
contributed more than $200,000 to
local, national, and global causes
and donated thousands of hours
to community service to countless
projects. Cornell fraternities host
countless fundraising events
for nonprofit organizations and
coordinate volunteer work in the
local community. Greeks Give
Back is our community’s largest
annual day of service, in which
hundreds of fraternity and sorority
members unite to volunteer for
local organizations and causes,
from Ithaca Welcomes Refugees to
the Boys and Girls Club of Tompkins
County.
GUIDE
BOOK
2017
Professional
Development
As a fraternity member, you’ll
join vast network of established,
influential global leaders in a variety
of industries and professions.
Although being a Cornellian
already opens up incredible career
opportunities, the professional
benefits for Greeks are even more
vast. Every year, countless fraternity
members land internships and
jobs from fellow fraternity alumni
members. Further, many fraternities
host alumni career series, resume
critiques and mock interviews, and
alumni networking events.
Friendship
One of the greatest benefits of
joining a fraternity is the lifelong
friendships that you’ll form with your
brothers. Through all the challenges
that you’ll face at Cornell, from
tough prelims to job interviews, your
brothers will always have your back
every step of the way. These lifelong
friendships create numerous
opportunities for networking and
social interaction, even long after
graduation.
5
Diversity & Inclusion
At Cornell, there is truly a fraternity
for everyone. The IFC and all of our
chapters strongly value diversity
and inclusion, and the membership
of our chapters represents many
dimensions of diversity. We
welcome and celebrate students
of all backgrounds, identities, and
experiences—regardless of race,
ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual
orientation, gender identity, gender
expression, socioeconomic status,
or disability.
Social
While fraternity members pride
themselves for their excellence in
scholarship, leadership, and service,
there are ample opportunities for
fun and relaxation as a Greek at
Cornell. From brotherhood events
to formals, fraternity members bond
with one another and meet students
in other Greek organizations.
Balancing work with an active
social life is a skill Greeks take with
them beyond college and into the
working world.
Tradition: Since 1865
When the University was founded
in 1865, Ezra Cornell and Andrew
Dickson White believed that all
students should be involved in a
fraternal organization. Ever since,
Greek life has played an integral
role in the student experience on
the Hill. When you join a fraternity at
Cornell, you are joining a community
that is as established and storied as
the University itself.

and we’re here to listen and support you at all
times, before, during, and after recruitment. During
Be yourself
Above all else, recruitment is your opportunity to tell fraternity members
about yourself—your background, interests & passions, and values.
Select a chapter that matches your personality and values—don’t try to
match theirs.
Participate in recruitment
Even if you are unsure if Greek life is for you // Many fraternity
members did not believe they would go Greek until they participated in
recruitment. Even if you don’t find a fit, you will have the opportunity to
meet new people and have a blast while doing so!
Visit more than one chapter
With 36 unique chapters constituting our diverse community, we believe
that there is a fraternity for everyone at Cornell. Use opportunities such
as Meet the Greeks and Open Houses to meet a variety of brothers and
visit as many chapters as possible.
recruitment
GUIDE
BOOK
2017
Dress casually
First impressions are important, but your looks aren’t everything. Dress
as you would for an average day of classes or hanging out with friends.
No fancy clothes necessary.
9

Don’t drink
Cornell is a dry recruitment campus—
we believe that the absence of alcohol
creates a more meaningful recruitment
experience. No fraternity is permitted
to provide any potential new member
alcohol, and you are not permitted to drink.
Keep an open mind
Successful potential new members
dismiss stereotypes and “rankings” about
chapters and Greeks by meeting people
and forming their own opinions. Despite
what you might have heard, learn about
fraternities for yourself.
Ask questions
Joining a fraternity is an important
decision. Ask questions to know that
you’re making the right decision. Curious
about a chapter’s living situation, dues,
average GPA, social events, etc.? Just
ask! Fraternity members will be happy to
answer your questions.
The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the advocacy, coordinating, and governing board
of the fraternities. Our goal is to lead Cornell’s Greek community, one of the nation’s
largest, strongest, and most diverse, in the right direction.
Above all else, we are passionate about the safety and fulfillment of fraternity members.
The purpose of the IFC is to assist the fraternity community in the development of its
members through intellectual leadership and humanitarian pursuits.
Simply put, we work to continue the proud tradition of being Greek at Cornell.
letter
to
parents
On behalf of the Interfraternity Council, I
enthusiastically invite you to learn about the IFC
fraternity community and encourage you to explore
the wonderful and unique opportunities Greek
membership will offer for your student.
Cornell fraternities greatly enhance the University
academic experience. Besides the social benefits,
the fraternity community promotes leadership,
scholarship, and community service opportunities.
Many members of the fraternity community are
involved in student government, athletics, and other
campus organizations. The fraternity GPA has been
consistently higher than the all-University average,
which is primarily due to the strong emphasis
fraternities place on scholastic achievement. In
addition, members of the fraternity community are
among the most enthusiastic volunteers in the local
area.
By joining the Cornell fraternity community, your
student will acquire vital life skills which are important
in cultivating the broadest college experience. They
will be making lifelong friendships and joining a
worldwide network of alumni. In addition, there are
multiple opportunities for you to become involved,
meet your son or daughter’s close friends, and connect
to the Greek community and greater Big Red family.
We welcome you and your student to our fraternity
community and encourage you to get involved in our
award-winning, vibrant Greek community!
Sincerely,
cornell’s
position on
hazing
Hazing is not only against IFC policy, but it
violates the Campus Code of Conduct and
New York State Law, and the values of all our
fraternities. The Greek community at Cornell
condemns hazing in all forms, as it no way
achieves the goals of fraternity membership,
such as service, scholarship, leadership, or
service.
In 2011, University President Skorton called on
Cornell and all American universities to “end
pledging as we know it.” Ever since, Cornell
has been a leader in eradicating pledging
nationwide, replacing it with the New Member
for
parents
Be happy and supportive with your student’s
choice of chapter
Attend parents’ events at your student’s chapter.
These are a great way to bond with your student
and build friendships of your own with other
Cornell parents!
Ask questions! You have the right to know about
membership costs, programming, and housing.
