1. Project: Saving Africa’s Vultures
ZIMBABWE: BirdLife Zimbabwe has finally signed its
Memorandum of Understanding with the Zimbabwe Parks
and Wildlife Management Authority. The Authority has
shared the draft of the poisoning laws with BirdLife
Zimbabwe, an opportunity for BLZ to give feedback
regarding the draft. For more information contact Fadzai
Matsvimbo: fadzai@blz.co.zw
2. Vulture Campaign
Policy and Advocacy
United Nations Environment Assembly 2 (UNEA 2):
Healthy Vultures, Healthy People was a successful side event held during UNEA2 on
the 25th of May, 2016. A high-level panel and speakers discussed the important role
vultures play in the ecosystem and in delivering human health benefits. The
Commissioner of the African Union pledged support to member states and BirdLife in
the fight to conserve African vultures. The UNEA press release can be accessed
here and the event outcome report can be accessed here.
From Left to Right: Hon. Amina Mohammed—
Minister of Environment, Nigeria,
Neville Ash—Director UNEP-WCMC,
Patricia Zurita—BirdLife CEO,
Hon. Rhoda Peace Tumusiime—Commissioner
African Union,
Bradnee Chambers—Executive Secretary CMS,
Charles Mojalemotho—Director, Department of
Environmental Affairs, Botswana.
UNEA Resolution: A resolution on Illegal Wildlife Trade was adopted at UNEA2.
BirdLife lobbied through the Botswana delegation and successfully managed to
include a clause in the draft resolution calling for the implementation of the African
Common Strategy to Combat Illegal Trade in Wild Flora and Fauna. In April, BirdLife
had included guidelines to combat wildlife poisoning in the implementation matrix of
the Strategy which would support member states of the African Union to implement
measures to reduce and stop wildlife poisoning, the greatest known threat to African
vulture populations.
Pan African Ornithological Conference (PAOC): Registration and payment
options are now active on the PAOC website. Early bird registration is open to all until
the 30th of June. To register please click here.
Crete2Cape (VintageAirRally): A consultant has been hired to develop
communication materials specifically for use by BirdLife and partners during various
events held during the rally. An article highlighting the collaboration between BirdLife
and VintageAirRally will be appearing in the next edition of the African Partnership
Newsletter. For more information visit VintageAirRally.
