Science Campaign: raising £3million for
a new Science Centre for Benenden
Great progress has been made since Her Royal Highness The
Princess Royal launched the Trust’s ‘Leading the Field’ Campaign
to help fund new science and sports facilities for Benenden. Over
£750,000 has been raised, and full planning permission has been
granted for Benenden’s new Science Centre.
Our goal is to raise £3 million for Science. This will help ensure
that the outstanding new Science Centre planned for Benenden
will be available for the first generation of Benenden girls by 2012.
We hope that you will be able to join us at the Action & Reaction
Ball at the London Aquarium in November. This special event is
being staged to help raise funds for the project. We are extremely
grateful to the Parents’ Events Committee for so kindly taking on
the planning and execution of this event.
Beyond the Leading the Field Campaign, the Trust has continued
to promote its Trust Award programme. This provides the
possibility of fully funded places for local primary school pupils, and
Sixth Formers. Now in its fourth year, the programme is funded
entirely by donor support and provides a life-changing opportunity
for students who could not otherwise have access to the benefits
of a Benenden education.
Gifts to the Trust made possible the construction of an eco-classroom
for Benenden. Located in the Victorian Water Gardens, the classroom
brings the very latest in sustainable technology to the school. The ecoclassroom
has been principally funded by the remarkable generosity of
Anna Marshall, Benenden Senior, and her parents, Lord & Lady
Marshall. The second phase of the project, a Nature Walk, has been
constructed. The Trust is very grateful to the 145 parents and Seniors
who have come forward to ‘sponsor-a-board’ of the new walk.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have so
generously made a donation to the Benenden School Trust. Your gift
has helped Benenden become the school it is today. As Trust

For over 20 years Dr Peter Lewis was Head of Science at Benenden. A laboratory in memory of Dr
Lewis is being generously funded by donations from Benenden Seniors, current & former Benenden
parents and other colleagues and friends of the School who knew, admired and fondly remember
Dr Lewis.

and respected throughout our time as students.
We shall never forget his expert guidance. We

Quiz night
Back by popular demand the second
Benenden Quiz Night took place on Saturday
13 March in the School Hall. Jonathan Watts
was again our host for a challenging and
entertaining evening. Twenty teams of guests
came to test their general knowledge in a fun
and competitive atmosphere. An electronic
silent auction of over 50 donated lots took
place during the evening with guests
competing to be the highest bidder of a
wonderful array of items — from exotic
holiday homes to test match tickets, exercise
classes to a tour of the gardens at
Highgrove.
The Trust was delighted with the outcome of
the evening — over £37,000 raised from the
auction in aid of the Science campaign. The
Trust would like to send its grateful thanks to
the many donors to the Quiz Night silent
auction for their generosity and to those who
made their bids prior to and on the evening.

Offical opening of the Eco
Classroom
The new eco-classroom is set in the Victorian Water
Gardens. The classroom utilises a broad range of
sustainable energy ideas and environmentally friendly
building practices. It is a wooden circular structure
and is made from renewable timber sources. A large
rainwater collection tank is combined with a
complicated filtration process to provide water to
the building. The tank is fed from run-off from a
sedum roof, designed to maximise insulation, while
extensive solar-panelling will light and heat the
building, as well as heating the running water. As far
as the architects know, this is the only such building
of its kind in the country and is at the leading edge of
sustainable design. A wonderful example of modern,
environmentally friendly design, the classroom is a
lesson in sustainability itself. Already in use by the
Biology Department, this new facility is proving popular
with other departments who appreciate the tranquil
setting. The classroom will also be available for nearby
primary schools to use for day trips and experiments.

Nature walk
Part of the eco-classroom project has been the construction of a nature walkway, leading
from the Walled Garden down through the Victorian Water Gardens to the classroom itself.
Providing access for all, the walkway includes over 145 sponsored and named boards. In
October 2009 the Trust invited Benenden families to sponsor a board, dedicating parts of
the walkway in any way they chose, and helping to fund its construction in the process. The
Trust was delighted with the response from Benenden families and would like to thank all of
the sponsors for their generous contribution.

Sustainable development is development that meets the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs.The main
measurable contribution is to environmental sustainability
by: protecting the physical environment; conserving natural
resources; enhancing ecology; and increasing biodiversity.
The Design Team have designed the building to
have an annual energy consumption of well below the
requirements of the current (2006) edition of the Approved
Documents L2A (Part L) of The Building Regulations 2000.
This has been achieved primarily through careful
consideration of the building’s form and envelope,
supplemented by the design of efficient mechanical
systems and the employment of various renewable energy
options. A strategy has been developed to generate a
proportion of the building’s electrical and heating energy
needs from renewable sources.

The new Science Centre will be
packed with substainable features.
Donations are invited to fund specific aspects of the new centre’s
sustainable development, for example:
• Photovoltaic cells £100,000
These are photovoltaic cells laminated within the
glazing in the roof. These cells generate electricity
when exposed to sunlight and, to a lesser degree,
daylight.
• Visual display boards for energy monitoring £3,500
Three in total - one per department ie: each of
Physics, Chemistry and Biology will have a panel. It is
expected that the departments may even aim to
compete to use least energy using these panels to
monitor their respective consumption
• Living wall £20,000
This is a wall with growing planting covering it
• Breeam Excellent rating £150,000
This is an overall rate and includes costs for some
of the items listed here.
BREEAM (Building Reasearch Establishment’s
Environmental Assessment Method) is the world’s
leading and most widely used environmental
assessment method for buildings, with over 115,000
buildings certified and nearly 700,000 registered.
It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable
design and has become the de facto measure used
to describe a building’s environmental performance.
Credits are awarded in ten categories according to
performance. These credits are then added
together to produce a single overall score on
a scale of Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and
Outstanding. We are aiming for Breeam Excellent
for the new Science Centre which for an
Education building is a challenging target.
• Solar water heating £10,000
Solar water heating consists of evacuated glass
tubes located in a southerly aspect on the roof.
Water pumped through these tubes is heated as
solar energy is absorbed.
• Biomass boiler £130,000
• Rainwater harvesting £30,000
• Variable volume low flow fume cupboards £50,000
• Automatic lighting control £5,000
• Free cooling to Lecture Theatre £3,000
• Water feature with evaporative cooling £40,000

Trust awards: funding 100% free places to Benenden for
local primary school children
The Trust Award programme exists to fund places for
girls who could not otherwise afford to take up a place
at the School. Now in its fourth year, the programme
compliments the existing Benenden Scholarships
programme, which has always supported candidates
on the basis of merit, whether academic, in sport,
music, art, design technology or drama, and the
Bursaries programme, which continues to offer financial
support. The Trust Award programme has enabled
Benenden School to offer its first 100% bursarial
awards which have enabled talented girls from local
primary schools to benefit from a Benenden education,
where financial considerations would otherwise have
closed off the opportunity. The Trust Award programme
has already made a number of awards to girls from
local primary schools and made its first Sixth Form
Award in 2009. We are delighted that the programme
is already making such a positive impact.

Benenden Angels: providing legacy
gifts to support Benenden’s future

Benenden Angels are those individuals who have
decided to support Benenden by making a bequest
in their wills to the Benenden School Trust. Since the
Autumn of 2007, when I became a Trustee of the
Benenden School Trust, I have written to as many
Seniors that Benenden has contact details for, as well
as met many more at reunion events. The extraordinary
enthusiasm and support to grow an endowment, a real
'savings account' for the school has been very
encouraging and the number of Angels has doubled in
the past two years. Benenden's Angels are keen to
provide facilities for future generations of girls, as well
as support the Trust Awards Campaign which funds
free places at Benenden for deserving girls from local
schools. Debra Price and I have attended lunches in
London and Edinburgh as well as hosting the well
established Angel thank you lunch held annually at
Benenden. In 2010 we will be holding our lunch in the
springtime in the new eco-classroom which is really
an amazing new facility at the school. In financially
uncertain times, the need to support legacy giving is
even more important than ever. I feel very honoured
to be leading this vital project and extremely grateful
to all those who feel the same way and have taken the
time to remember Benenden in their wills. If you are

Action and Reaction Ball
The London Aquarium on
Saturday 6 November 2010
The Benenden School Trust presents the Action
and Reaction Ball in aid of the £3m Science
campaign. We invite you to join us for a
wonderful Black Tie evening at the Sea Life
London Aquarium, home to one of Europe’s
largest collections of global marine life.
Your ticket includes a Champagne Reception,
followed by a three-course Dinner, including all
wine, soft drinks and bottled water.
This will be a Benenden party to be
remembered and offers you an unforgettable
night in this world- famous attraction. From our
Champagne Reception among the sharks in the
‘Pacific Wreck’ and on to Dinner and Dancing in
the magnificent ‘Atlantic Cove’. We have some

raise funds for the Benenden School Trust’s £5
