Most countries have a national day. In
England it is April 23rd – this is St George’s
Day. St George is the patron saint of
England, but not many people celebrate his
day. The national day in Wales is St David’s
Day on March 1st. It is a very important day
for Welsh people. At schools there are lessons
only in the mornings, and in the afternoon
schools organize concerts. Children wear
traditional red, white and black clothes and a
yellow flower called a daffodil for the concert.
But who was St David? He was probably born
at the end of the fifth century in the west of
Wales. David lived a very simple life – for
example, he only ate bread and vegetables and
he never ate meat or fish. He said, ‘Often the
small things in life are important.’
