King Bhumibol Adulyadej
The work of a lifetime
Thailand’s revered monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX,
passed away at the age of 88, on October 13th, 2016.
For seven decades, King Bhumibol Adulyadej inspired and encouraged
the people of Thailand in countless ways. The world’s longest-serving head of state (70 years),
served his people and lived up to his name, which means “strength of the land”.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej is recognised internationally not
only as the longest reigning monarch, but also as one of the
world’s hardest working leaders. His dedication to the Thai
people has won him global admiration. Under his watchful
gaze, old Siam grew into the modern Thailand of today.
He became the ninth monarch of the Chakri dynasty, or
King Rama IX, at the age of 18.
“We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and
happiness of the Siamese people.” This declaration,
spoken by The King himself at his coronation ceremony, was
his first public pledge to promote the welfare of all his subjects.
Throughout his 70-year reign he has fulfilled this promise to
the letter.
“We shall reign with
righteousness for the benefits
and happiness of
the Siamese people.”
Not only did his words wield profound influence, but his
actions also inspired deep respect, while his ideas indelibly
shaped the course of Thailand’s development and its
peoples’ lives. He worked tirelessly to improve lives and
to promote development in rural areas. He was often seen
travelling on foot over rough terrain, visiting remote
communities with a camera slung around his neck, and a
huge map he had compiled in his hands. The result has been
more than 4,000 development projects nationwide: ranging
from irrigation, farming, conservation, flood and drought
mitigation, to drug control, public health and distance learning.
He created the Royal Projects to give farmers and mountain
people a chance to move away from growing illicit drugs.
This crop substitution project was integral to the decline of
opium production along borders with Myanmar and Laos.
His pioneering efforts in artificial rain-making changed the
lives of countless farmers.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej was also an brilliant musician,
composing many wonderful jazz pieces; he was also a scientist
with over 20 patents.
According to Buddhist tradition, King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s
body zin Bangkok’s Grand Palace in a golden urn, draped in
silk, gold and diamonds. The country will observe a grieving
period of one year.
Royal Quotes :
“Economic Development must be done step by step.
It should begin with the strengthening of our economic foundation,
by assuring that the majority if our population has enough to live on...
Once reasonable progress has been achieved, we should then embark
on the next steps, by pursuing more advanced levels of economic development”.
“Being a tiger is not important. The important thing is for us to have a sufficient
economy. A sufficient economy means to have enough to support ourselves...
we have to take a careful step backward... each village or district must have
relative self-sufficient”.

TRADI-
TION
Yee Peng
& Loy Krathong
Culture & Heritage
As the full moon lights up the night sky of November, throughout
the city of Chiang Mai, hundreds of lanterns and krathongs
are lit and released into the sky and rivers. This is Yee
Peng and Loy Krathong time, two famous events in Northern
Thailand.
Thailand is currently in a period of national mourning after
the passing of the beloved monarch King Bhumibol Adulyadej,
Yee Peng and Loy Krathong festivals will keep going but in
a sombre manner, to show respect for King Rama IX. This
means that everyone can quietly release floating krathongs
on the river as well as launching lanterns in the sky, but these
lanterns should be of white or grey colors and celebrations
should be done in a quiet and respectful way. Fireworks,
parades, concerts and beauty contests are all canceled.
Loy Krathong festival is part of Thai heritage and represents
a close bond between Thai culture and water. This year the
event will take place on November 14 to 16, 2016.
As with most celebrations in Thailand, Loy Krathong comes
with a rich history. The most common legends revolves
around Nang Nopamas, an artistic woman in the royal court of
Sukhothai some 700 years ago. Her wisdom and knowledge
as well as her creativity all charmed King Ramkhamhaeng.
History has it that “Khun Nopamas presented to The King
an ornate float made of green leafy deck on which she
placed a little cargo of betel-nut, betel leaf, parched rice and
sweet-scented flowers. She took several fresh fruits of a
fleshy character, such as papaya and pumkin and deftly
carved them into representation of fruits, flowers and animals
then piled them up in a conical arrangement in the center.”
Khun Nopamas, who could do miracles with her hands,
enjoyed making and floating krathongs as an homage to
Buddha, this period was decreed a Buddhist holiday on the
night of the full moon, with the floating of the krathong a staple
of the event.
In Chiang Mai, the celebration of Yee Peng is also famous.
This festival features beautifully illuminated lanterns, which
are either carried, displayed in houses and temples and
launched into the night sky. This year, the tone colors for the
hot air balloons and lanterns are black, grey and white.
How to make a Krathong
Ready made Krathongs are available in abundance in the markets of Chiang
Mai, but cannot beat the pleasure of floating one’s own created hand-made
one. Here are a few quick and easy basics to help you start, and then let your
creativity run wild to build yourself an amazing Krathong. Give it a hand!
5.
The Moment:
Go to the nearest temple located
near the river and release
your Krathong.
4.
1.
Accessories:
Prepare a cut or slice banana tree
trunk for the krathong’s base,
banana leaves, decorative
flowers, incense sticks, pins,
clear tape and scissors.
2.
3.
The Making:
The Decoration:
Decorate your Krathong
with coloured flowers, incense sticks
and a candle.
The Base:
Start with a slice of banana tree
trunk and cover it with some
banana leaves cut to shape.
Take another strip of leaf and fold it into
a double triangle. Overlap the lose ends
so that it takes on the shape of a scoop
then cut the ends straight with the scissors
and pin it through the center to
the float as well as all around it.
VISIT
IN TOWN
The
Artists’s
Village
BAAN KANG WAT
Tucked away in the university neighborhood, opposite Wat Ram Poeng
temple, lies the serene community of Baan Kang Wat. This small community
of independent shops and businesses is made up of around ten unique
houses, centred around an outdoor communal area and amphitheatre.
The teak houses are built in traditional-meets-modern, with brushed concrete
walls, hanging art and timeless wooden furniture.
Nattawut Ruckprasit “Big”, is the man behind this idea. He runs a ceramic
shop in Baan Kang Wat called “Bookoo Studio” and says that his aim
behind this project was to create a unique and close knit community, where
all the businesses work together and participate in joint events to create a
truly community neighbourhood.
All the creative businesses found at the village focus on local, handmade
sustainable and organic products. Baan Kang Wat houses a library, art
galleries, studios and shops. Check out the community village’s schedule
and discovermany interesting workshops such as ceramics, jewelry, water
color drawing, Raku Japanese pottery technique, woodcut printing etc...
Along with these shops, there are also a few cafes and two restaurants
offering Thai cuisine and burgers.
Every Sunday morning, Baan Kang Wat houses a farmers’ market. From
7 am. to 11 am., you can buy organic vegetables, home made products,
cheeses and delicious coffee.
Obviously, Ban Kang Wat is the place in Chiang Mai to enjoy a peaceful
moment. Behind this project lies the idea to combine modern life in the city
with rural country lifestyle. It is not just a place to shop and eat, but an
unforgetable village in which to rest, relax and enjoy slow life.
Baan Kang Wat
