tactics fall into following five categories, which have been taken as independent variables in this<br />

study:<br />

- Intimidation<br />

- Ingratiation<br />

- Exemplification<br />

- Self-promotion<br />

- Supplication<br />

The Supervisor’s rating of employee performance has been taken as a single dependent variable.<br />

The study is made on assessing the impact of these five independent variables<br />

3.1. Research hypotheses<br />

The researcher has developed the following hypotheses after study of the available literature.<br />

Hypothesis 1: A subordinate’s use of intimidation will have a negative effect on<br />

supervisor’s performance rating of employee.<br />

Hypothesis 2: Ingratiation has a positive effect on the performance rating of the<br />

subordinate.<br />

Hypothesis 3: Employees engaged in exemplification will be rated positively by the<br />

supervisor.<br />

Hypothesis 4: A supervisor's ratings of the subordinates performance is negatively<br />

related to self-promotion tactics.<br />

Hypothesis 5: Supplication tactic used by subordinates is negatively related to the<br />

performance rating.<br />

3.2. Hypothesized Model<br />

In the light of Literature Review, the Researcher has developed the following hypothesized<br />

model:<br />

4. Research Methodology<br />

The research methodology employed in this research is being illustrated as follows:<br />

4.1. Sources of data<br />

Preliminary secondary data has been gathered through digital library and other libraries. A<br />

number of journals, thesis, and research <strong>paper</strong> have been studied in order to prepare the literature<br />

review.<br />

Primary data has been collected from the employees of banking and telecom sector through<br />

survey questionnaires. The banking and telecom sectors were chosen on account of their<br />

similarity in corporate culture and work environment.<br />

4.2. Sample characteristics<br />

The sample selected for the present study is 250 Supervisor- Subordinate dyads belonging to<br />

different companies from the banking and telecom sectors located in the twin cities. In case of<br />

banking sector, mostly private sector banks were selected in order to have a common basis for<br />

the study as the telecom sector is dominated by the private sector/multi nationals except the<br />

PTCL. The Researcher targeted the middle level hierarchy for getting the feedback on the<br />
