software industry, which are different from other firms such as ‘software traders’,<br />

‘software value adders’ and ‘IT service providers’. Software developing firms being at<br />

the top of skill pyramid has highest importance in overall software industry. Accordingly,<br />

this thesis selects these firms from this segment.<br />

1.1 Software Industry in Pakistan<br />

In Pakistan, Software industry did not get much attention of policy makers till mid-<br />

1990s. 4 Over time Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), Computer Society of<br />

Pakistan (CSP) and Pakistan Software Houses Association (PASHA) came into being<br />

that are designed to support the software industry in Pakistan. Developed countries<br />

outsource their software development to developing countries like Pakistan and India due<br />

to availability of cheap and skilled labor. Therefore, Pakistan software industry mainly<br />

depends on outsourced software development.<br />

2. Previous Literature<br />

Literature for Pakistan’s software industry is scarce, both empirical and otherwise. This<br />

area of research has remained underworked because of the lack of proper database of<br />

software industry. As Pakistan Software Export Board (2005) in an exploratory study of<br />

software industry term Pakistani software industry a totally uncharted territory as far as<br />

the structure, management practices, technical ability, and the industry dynamics are<br />

concerned. Information technology has brought revolutionary changes in many walks of<br />

life. Consequently, this study tries to fill the gap of knowledge of software industry in<br />

Pakistan by highlighting the important traits of software firm growth.<br />

3. Objectives<br />

The study aims at:<br />

• Conducting analysis of the traits of software developing industry in Pakistan,<br />

related to their structure, management practices, technical ability, and the<br />

industry dynamics.<br />

4. Research Methods<br />

4.1 Framework of Analysis<br />

This article selects a certain segment of software industry that produces (develops)<br />

software. 5 Such firms are called ‘software development houses’ or ‘software developing<br />

firms.’ This segment is different from similar segments of industry such as ‘software<br />

traders’, ‘software value adders’ and ‘IT service providers’ that require low-level of<br />

software developing skills. Software developing firms being on the top of skill pyramid<br />

has highest importance in overall software industry.<br />
