vi. Increasing the production of new staff. All newly established medical schools and<br />

other health professionals training institutions needs to be properly monitored to<br />

ensure quality and avoid surplus.<br />

package or rapid promotion.<br />

I. Efforts should be invested by the less endowed states to expand their in-service training<br />

capacity to the level of the southern states that produce enough midwives for their<br />

After graduation continuing medical education should become mandatory as a condition<br />

for the renewal of practice license. Finally, accreditation of training institutions should be<br />

seen as mechanism to sustain continuing improvement rather than a process of periodic<br />

evaluation. FMOH collaborates with some local universities concerning the in-service<br />

training of health manpower in the following areas: Health Planning & Management<br />

(Universities of Benin, Ilorin and Maiduguri), Health Information Management (Ilorin),<br />

and Health Economics (Abia State University). Plans are under way to commence<br />

training programmes in Health Financing at the University of Calabar and Ahmadu Bello<br />

University, and Women in Health at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. This<br />

effort should be sustained.<br />

Human Resource Research and Human Resource Health Information Systems; Many<br />

health regulatory agencies could not report on skill mix parameters; they will need to<br />

improve their database in order to report on these crucial indicators susceptible to guide<br />

decision making.<br />
