arbour Place Day Centre recently received much needed and very welcome support
from Grimsby funeral consultants, JW Emberson who partnered with fellow funeral
directors, Steven Near to launch an appeal for sleeping-bags, rucksacks, food and
hygiene products.
Appeal launch: From left, Dave Emberson, Robin Barr, Dave Carlile and appeal organiser, Paul Webster
(Picture Grimsby Telegraph)
Talking to the Grimsby Telegraph, appeal organiser and funeral director Paul Webster said: "We
decided to launch the appeal with the intention of enabling the team at Harbour Place to be able to
provide some comfort and hot meals to the needy over the colder autumn and winter months. It
seems a nice idea to pause and consider those less fortunate."
Robin Barr, Project Director of Harbour Place, added: "The appeal by Emberson's for food,
sleeping bags and other essential items will be used to support the 45 people a day using Harbour
Place and those we provide support to on the streets and in their homes. We are very concerned
that there are still a number of people still sleeping rough on the streets of Grimsby.”
Dave Carlile, Project Co-ordinator, said: "Harbour Place would like to thank everyone at
Emberson's for their support. It is coming up to the winter time, which is a critical time for people
who find themselves without a home to call their own.
"At this present time we have 35 people sleeping rough on the streets of Grimsby and Cleethorpes
and the Outreach Team at Harbour Place are working hard with other agencies to provide
accommodation, but demand for places is huge.”
Harbour Place are also in desperate need of men's clothing, particularly
underwear and socks, along with small men's jeans, tracksuit bottoms and
trainers. Sleeping bags can often get wet, so clients need a fresh change of dry
clothing, which in turn helps them avoid further health problems.
arbour Place is excited to announce a new project in the making.
Tina Andrew, Project Co-ordinator, has now completed her 5 point
auricular Acu-Detox course and is a fully qualified and registered
practitioner.
Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, auricular acupuncture is proven to
assist in the recovery of individuals who are trying to stop using drugs and or
alcohol. Auricular acupuncture uses five points in the ear to assist with
cravings, withdrawal symptoms, anxiety and mental well being.
Harbour Place is in the process of building a programme to assist 6-12
individuals over a twelve week period to start to address issues around
substance addiction. We are planning to make acupuncture a fundamental
part of a wider harm reduction plan with activities used around the
acupuncture to make a more formal structured day for individuals.
At the time of publication, the Outreach Team at
Harbour Place are currently working with some 35
rough-sleepers in Grimsby and Cleethorpes, including
two men who are in their sixties.
Speaking to Harbour Place News Martin Williams,
Project Co-ordinator and head of outreach services said:
“We are working closely with shops and businesses in
North East Lincolnshire to identify and help roughsleepers.
“In addition, many businesses have become concerned about the number of beggars in Grimsby and
Cleethorpes. To date, we have identified 14 beggars, NONE of whom are actually homeless and I would
urge the public not to give to beggars. The best way the public can help homeless people is by donating to
Harbour Place.”
Martin continued: “We actually came across one person who is living in a rubbish skip.” (see picture above)
And with the weather now becoming colder, Martin expressed deep concern the team have for those who
find themselves sleeping rough on the streets.
By Brian Bennett, Service-User Volunteer
In August, we went on a day-trip to Lincoln,
which was a great day out. I particularly enjoyed
the visit to Lincolnshire Life Museum and the
poppy wave display at the castle was fantastic.
We also visited Lincoln Cathedral to have a look
around and some people lit a candle of
memorial.
Walking down Steep Hill was okay, but walking
up was very tiring!
Everyone enjoyed a fish and chips lunch, with a
welcome pint, at Wetherspoons.
A great day out was had by all
I am found in the sea and on land but I do
not walk or swim. I travel by foot but I
am toeless. No matter where I go, I’m
never far from home. What am I?
I don’t have lungs or a chest but I need air; I
Once again, Harbour Place has enjoyed
a wonderful amount of Harvest Festival
donations from many schools and
churches in the area.
This will enable us to help many, many
people who are either homeless or
socially excluded.
From the bottom of our hearts we would
like to say a big...
Tina Andrew with pupils of St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School
Harbour Place has appointed Bob Palmer as their new
volunteer editor of Harbour Place News. Before being
struck-down with serious and life-changing mental
health difficulties, Bob had over 20 years experience of
working for homeless people with special needs.
Speaking recently to Project Co-ordinator Tina Andrew,
Bob said: “The few hours a week I spend at Harbour
Place have changed my life. I was feeling washed-up,
redundant and often lonely, but thanks to the serviceusers,
staff and fellow volunteers, much of this has
largely been mitigated.”
Bob welcomes your articles, stories, poems and artwork for inclusion in Harbour Place News, so
if you have anything or, need help in putting something together, please see him.
