Spinach and
Onion Pakoras
BY AWARD WINNING
CHEF ABDUS SHAHID
Prep Time:
10 mins
Cooking Time:
20 mins
Pakora is a generic term used for
deep fried fritters made in India.
Mostly, gram flour is used for coating
the vegetables and then they are
deep fried in oil. These are perfect to
serve if you have a Christmas party
coming up...
Method
1. Place the chickpea flour, spinach, yoghurt,
1/2 cup water, cumin, coriander, fenugreek and
onions into a large bowl.
2. Season with salt and stir until well combined.
3. Pour the oil into a large pot with a heavy
bottom and heat to 175°C.
4. Carefully drop tablespoons of the batter into
the hot oil and fry, in batches, until they rise to
the surface and are golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes.
Ingredients
• 2 cups chickpea flour
• 1 cup chopped spinach leaves
• 1 cup yoghurt
• 1 tablespoon ground cumin
• 1 tablespoon ground coriander
• 1 tablespoon dried fenugreek leaves, crushed
with hands
• 1 large onion, sliced thinly
• Salt
• 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying
5. Drain on a rack lined with paper towels and
sprinkle with a little salt.
6 Serve the pakoras with a chutney of your
choice.
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | #49 ISSUE | CHRISTMAS
#49
Get prepped for
Christmas
Christmas is only one short
month away...
Although there are some ‘Grinches’ out
there, that think it’s still much too early
to start thinking about Christmas, we
think this is a great time to get a head
start so that December can be a time of
celebration instead of frustration.
Tis’ almost the season… so the team
at Bounce, have put together several
things to help you get ahead of the
game…
1. Start organising a Christmas list
Make a list of who you need to buy presents for,
and what you want to buy them. If you can’t think
of ideas for people, ask them what they want now
- a heads up so early in advance will allow them
time to think about what they really want.
2. Start saving
Christmas can be expensive, so putting some
money aside early can help you budget in
advance. Write a budget for how much all the
presents are going to cost, and if you’re going to
be spending a small fortune on a lot of people,
you can stagger when to get the gifts, so it
doesn’t all fall on your December pay packets.
3. A really deep clean
Prepare your home for Christmas decorating by
getting things spiffy clean. During the busyness
of December you will be able to get by with just
some maintenance cleaning.
4. Get ahead with your Christmas cards
If you’re the kind of person who sends out loads
of Christmas cards, to everyone you know you’ll
know this needs planning early in advance. Divide
everyone up into family, friends, work colleagues.
To make sure you don’t forget anyone. Buy all
the cards you’ll need, and write them out, so
you’ve got plenty of time to find out everyone’s
addresses, if you aren’t delivering in person.
5. Book time off
Depending on where you work, you may have
to do this even earlier, as it can be difficult to
organise with everyone when they want to be off.
Keep in mind you may not get exactly what you
want, everyone will have to compromise.
6. Set the date
For any holiday parties you would like to host
and try to send out invites one month prior to the
date of the party.
7. Stock the up
With Christmas essentials… usually this includes
lots of alcohol, nibbles, mince pies and lastly the
Christmas TV guide.
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | ISSUE #49 | #49 FASHION
BY ZEE BATTERSBY
I’m not old i’m
retro
Check out my
fashion website
imnotoldimretro.co.uk
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… Ok so firstly a reminder about
me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 43, a mother and a grandmother.
Well here we are in
November! How did
that even happen?
It’s customary to start
thinking about those
nights out during
December. Don’t panic,
I’m here to help! Firstly,
check the dress code. Is
it cocktail dress, formal
dress, smart casual or
do your own thang?
Obviously the latter is
my most favourite type
of dress code.
Ok, cocktail is easy. That’s generally to the
knee or above, you even could be daring
and choose one of the amazing jumpsuits
that are everywhere at the moment. I’d
love to rock one in true Farah Fawcett
style. Sadly, I’m not sure I can carry off
gold lame, therefore I’d go for the flowing
fabrics that still give the that 70’s edge.
Team with fabulous
heels, (flats in your bag
for later obvs!) get some
volume in your hair and
something sparkly.
Formal can be less
fun to choose. Often a
formal dress can hide our
best features. For me, it
hides my best feature,
my legs and highlights
my worst, my middle! So
if you are on the curvy
side, choose something
structured that gives you
the shape you’re hoping for.
Fifties style dresses are brilliant
for this. If you’re petite choose
a style that wont overwhelm you and keep
large patterns to a minimum. If you’re tall and
willowy, well lucky you, almost every style will
look elegant, plus you can wear flats!
Everyone LOVES a Christmas jumper, right?
This can of course come under smart casual.
12

FASHION
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | ISSUE #49 | #49 FASHION
These are some of
my style choices for
celebrations.
Whilst I love the novelty jumpers, here
are a few of my favourite, maybe more
wearable Christmas jumpers.
Last but by no means least, “Do your
own thang.” When there’s no dress
code, you can just turn up and be
yourself. These are the best nights,
along with the nights that aren’t planned.
So whatever you have in coming up, take
your time and always buy it if you feel
comfortable in it.
I will be putting together some outfit
suggestions over on my instagram feed
and blog highlighting some Christmas
picks, and next month ill be giving you gift
buyers some gifts hints for your loved ones
who love fashion.
My winter coat is out
and ready to go! Plus
- I’ve made my first
winter boot purchase
TIPS & ADVICE THIS SEASON
TIPS ON
Ties
I thought we’d go back to basics this month
and look at an item that can really pull a sharp
outfit together.
People underestimate the versatility of ties and they
are usually reserved for more formal events despite
the fact that they are easily integrated into your
everyday wardrobe.
First up some good rules of thumb to follow;
1. The tip of your tie should touch your belt line (but
never go below your waistline).
2. Keep your choice on the skinny side. It’s smarter,
cooler and more up-to-date.
BY DANIEL FRANCIS
3. When really upping your game and including a
pocket square be sure to never wear a matching
square & tie set. Look for one that draws out a certain
colour within your tie or coordinates with its colour.
16

FASHION
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | #49 ISSUE | #49 FASHION
4. If you choose to wear a tie bar it should
always be placed between the third and
fourth buttons of your shirt
Next, let’s look at some of the different
knots you can try…
The Four-in-Hand – This is the knot most commonly
used, the one they teach you in school and probably
the only way some people thought you could tie a
tie. It is actually on the more casual side of knots
so great for use during the day and with weekend
outfits. Avoid if attending a formal event. It creates
quite a small knot so it works well with most collars
and fabrics
1. The Four-in-Hand 2. The Windsor / Half
Windsor
The Windsor / The Half-Windsor – A few more steps
than the previous and creates a larger, more bulky
knot. If done correctly, it will produce a dimple in the
centre too. This is much more appropriate for formal
events and goes well with spread or wide spread
collars.
Its younger brother the Half-Windsor is as you would
expect, a version of the above that creates a smaller
knot (plus is a little easier to master). Because of
its smaller size it can be worn with narrower collars
depending on the thickness / weight of the tie itself.
3. The Pratt 4. The Elderedge
The Pratt – If you find you’re struggling with the
above, the Pratt (or Shelby) is an easier alternative;
often misunderstood as you actually start with
your tie facing backwards. Follow the same collar
guidelines as with the Half-Windsor.
The Eldredge – this is not for beginners or the faint
of heart. Aesthetically interesting but much more
complicated to actually tie with fifteen steps. It’s
quite a modern addition having only been invented
in 2007. It creates a large knot and definitely catches
the eye. You’re going to want to play this one by your
own standards but I’d advise you avoid during more
traditional events unless you’re hoping to raise a few
eyebrows…
There are many more knots to choose from a simple
Google search away. You can also easily find several
YouTube videos with step-by-step guides to help you
practise. You can also check out my blog for further
information on the different collar styles mentioned
above
For more information check out my blog at
Tuddenham Mill
Real bride Michelle chose Angelic Weddings & Events to
create her Save the Dates, Invitations and some of her venue
stationery for her big day back in May.
A theme of Stunning fuchsia pink, butterflies, diamantés, florals
and silver glitter was just stunning against the back drop of the
contemporary touches at Tuddenham Mill.
Michelle chose pretty die cut pink butterflies, fuchsia satin
ribbon and lots of bling for her post card style save the dates,
deluxe invitations with matching RSVP cards, canvas table plan,
table numbers, Lollipop reserve signs, bespoke post-box and
favour tags.
Delicate butterfly wineglass place settings and canvas table
numbers on wooden easels looked pretty against the black
furniture and crisp white linen. The bespoke bling post-box
worked perfectly next to their wooden heart drop box guest
book and there were lovely fuchsia pink touches added
throughout the venue.
Q: WHY DID YOU CHOSE YOUR
VENUE?
A: “We chose to get married at
Tuddenham as it was so different.
The fact that we could have
exclusive use was a huge factor to
us so this was important and the
whole venue is filled with charm
and romance plus the food is
fantastic.”
Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE
ITEM FROM ANGELIC WEDDINGS
& EVENTS?
A: “Our favourite items were our
lollipop signs and our butterfly wine
glass names. They just finished it
off perfectly and were even prettier
than I could have imagined.”
Q: WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE
OTHER BRIDES?
A: “Don’t worry about anyone else,
just make sure you do the things
you want. Pick the venue, the food
and seating plan you are happy
with. Your friends and family will be
happy regardless, as they’re seeing
you get married.”
Performing tracks from their latest
releases ‘Helter Seltzer’ and ‘TV
en Français’ as well as a healthy
dose from classics stretching right
back to their 2005 major label
debut ‘With Love and Squalor’, We
Are Scientists always guarantee a
unique night balancing unrivalled
onstage humour and a blistering set
of giant pop songs, but don’t just
take it from us...
Rachel Ducker caught up with lead
singer, Keith Murray about their
exciting new tour stopping by us in
Cambridge and Norwich.
R: You started the band whilst at college
in California, with your fellow band
member Chris Cain, how did that
come about?
It sort of started when we graduated from
university; we had been friends in college,
but never played music together at all.
After we graduated from university we
moved to Northern California and were
confronted with the mundane tasks of real
life, we all ended up with dull day jobs.
We were bored and no longer had
the freedom and playfulness of being
irresponsible college students. We lived in
a really cool house in Berkeley, California
with a third friend of ours and we all
decided to start a band in our basement,
just to have something to do after work
and it ultimately morphed into ‘We Are
Scientists,’ so it was mainly done as a
boredom relief!
R: When did you get into music and how?
I’m not really sure, my older sister was
always very into music, and she got me
into it.
The first bands I was really into, courtesy
of my sister, were Bon Jovi and Poison.
Fortunately grunge destroyed that pretty
early on for me and I graduated to Nirvana
pretty quickly. My sister, and I assume
that’s normally the case for people with
siblings, forced me into liking the music
she liked pretty early on.
R: Yes, funnily enough my younger
brother did that to me, I’d never heard of
metal and grunge until he advised me to
check it out.
Your younger brother did that?
R: Well he’s now a musician so I am sure
he had a better ear than I did!
Yeah right! Great stuff.
R: Who were your music influences
growing up?
I think the band I was most obsessed with
in High School was Marilyn Manson, as they
were from my hometown, so I used to see
them all the time before they got signed,
you know, when they were just a local
band playing tiny, terrible clubs in South
Florida. I would go to every single Marilyn
Manson show, obsessively, so they were
definitely my favourite band in high school.
I’m not sure they actually come through in
our music at all, but I always hold a little
love, my hidden secret passion for Marilyn
Manson still remains. I think through them
I then learned about The Pixies and then
Nirvana came through via The Pixies.
31 31

NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | ISSUE 2016 #49 | ISSUE | KEITH #49 MURRAY
R: Our local hometown hero happens to
be Ed Sheeran!
Well that’s great, at least bands come
through to Cambridge, I mean, when I was
growing up bands never stopped by in
South Florida, it’s a real pain to get down
there. In our entire career I think We Are
Scientists have only played there three
times. I’m always trying to get us down
there because my whole family is there so
that’s even with me constantly annoying
our booking agent! You’re lucky.
R: I think we are, but the UK is also a lot
smaller, so we have that on our side to!
Yeah! It’s not too bad a drive from London
to Cambridge for us, when we visit.
R: Most stars these days are under so
much pressure to act in a certain way.
Do you think the definition of a celebrity
is changing?
There’s a level of media training that all
celebrity bands need to have. It’s just funny
that social media now accelerates that
process and every band in the world needs
to be well media trained and savvy about
how to manipulate their own media.
So I don’t think the definition of a
celebrity has changed, but I think that the
application of it, and how wide spread
celebrities behaviour needs to be has, just
to get your foot in the door as a new band,
you kind of need to be ahead from the
get go.
I also think that the level of media training
is innate for kids now, I think there are
probably sixteen year olds in the world
who are better media trained than I am,
and I’ve done thousands of interviews by
now. Kids have been so indoctrinated so
early on for personal presentation, they
are better at it than even experienced quo
pros, it probably means that entertainers
in the future are going to be much more
entertaining than even we are, and I think
we’re pretty entertaining personalities.
R: Speaking of entertainment, tell us
about your series of TV shorts - Steve
Wants His Money, made for MTV UK in
2009?
I think it just began, as every time we were
invited to take part in pre-filmed variety
shows, as a band, we always ended up
wanting to write our own sketches. I love
that British music shows have sketch
sessions; the guests play along and banter
with the host in a sketch situation, so I
think we were very active about wanting
to write our own material because we’ve
always had a voice as a band.
So we done that a couple of times with
some MTV shows and with Nick Grimshaw
and they asked if we wanted to make this
little short series to play in-between TV
shows to replace commercials, they were
seven minutes long. I am not sure how
they thought of that, but they approached
us knowing we would be interested in
providing that.
R: Speaking of MTV, I hear you always like
to come up with the concepts for your
music videos, what is your favourite one
to date?
Hmmm, I always been a pretty big fan
of ‘It’s A Hit’ video, mainly because I feel
it was pretty brave to end the video by
splattering a child’s face with my blood. I
am proud of all of the videos that ended
with me dying, which for some reason we
have a huge number of videos of me being
terribly hurt or dying altogether, we have
six or seven videos where I perish at the
end.
R: Well I am glad you are still here!
Ah, thank you, as am I!
R: I am a cat lover, I would love to know
about the cat called Lewis used for your
artwork?
It started as we thought it would be a
weird thing for a band to embrace. We
took the photos that became the cover for
the first album where we are holding the
cats.
R: That’s my favourite one!
Nice, thanks, we didn’t intend it to be the
album cover, it was supposed to be for our
press shots and then the label told us that
we needed our actual faces in our press
shots, so we made it the album cover, and
from there I think we decided it was really
funny to keep on using cats as a rock
band mascot, it doesn’t make any sense at
all. Our current one has a nice chain and
smokes a cigarette!
R: Out of all of your songs, do you have
a favourite that you enjoy listening to or
performing?
Its always changing, I can’t even really
listen to our first album of songs any more
as I have heard them so many times, I think
right now ‘Buckle’ is my favourite We Are
Scientist song, I always have a very big soft
spot for ‘Afterhours’ so they are maybe my
two favourite at this time.
R: Your autumn tour starts in October and
stops by us Cambridge and Norwich, what
can we expect?
We are playing so many dates on this tour,
the venues are more intimate, so what will
be fun about these shows is that I sense
they are going to be quite energetic and
probably pretty interactive.
I mean, we like to talk a lot in-between our
songs and with a venue that only holds
a certain amount of people, its actually
pretty easy to communicate with the
audience. They will be engaging!
R: Do you enjoy being on tour?
It is pretty boring to be honest, but the
worst part isn’t the actual travelling, its
filling time between the shows. There’s
not that much you can do. You never have
time to do anything substantial. We are
big cocktail enthusiasts, so there’s always
a threat we will end up engaging our
love for cocktails! We are pretty good at
entertaining each other so it’s never too
bad.
R: What does the rest of the year hold in
store for you once your tour is complete?
We’re pretty busy with shows for the rest
of the autumn, we have another US tour
we have to do, then we will be back in the
UK for a short time in December. Right
now, the New Year is totally empty so we
hope to start working on the next record
very shortly!
R: Thank you so much for your time Keith
and good luck with the tour!
A guide to
Sweet Wine
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
By sweet wines, we are referring to wines that have
residual sugar in them...
FOLLOW THE 5S’S
SEE, SWIRL, SMELL, SIP & SPIT OR SWALLOW
Although you might say that the best way
to taste a wine is to ‘just drink some of it’
there is a much better and rewarding way
in taking a more methodical approach.
PRODUCTION
The objective is to make a wine
that contains alcohol but also
sugar. Alcohol comes from the
combination of yeast and sugar, so
there needs to be an abundance of
sugar to produce enough alcohol,
but also leaving an amount of sugar
in the wine
There are many ways of achieving
this:-
1. Grapes that contain sugar with
sufficient to have some left over
after fermentation
2. Adding sugar.
40

FOOD & DRINK
NOVEMBER 2016 | ISSUE #49 | FOOD & DRINK
a). Before fermentation as sugar or honey
(Chaptalisation).
b). After fermentation as unfermented juice
(Sussreserve).
3. Add alcohol, typically brandy before all sugar is
fermented (fortified)
4. Remove water to concentrate the
sugar (Drying, Freezing or Noble
Rot).
SUGAR LEVELS
Sugar in wine has to be
produced in the vineyard,
some grapes have more natural
sugar than others and that is why
many sweet wines have the Muscat
grape in use, which is high in sugar. The
environment plays an important part as more
ripening increases the sugar content. By pruning
the vine or leaving the grapes on the vine until
they shrink like raisins concentrates the sugar.
NATURAL SWEET WINES
Uses grapes that are grown and picked, at or past
being ripe, the winemaker can then choose how
much sugar is left in the juice and be able to adjust
sweetness and alcohol levels.
ADDING SUGAR
Chaptalisation - This was used in Roman times
when they added honey to sweeten a wine. Today
sugar is added to increase the alcohol levels
where the grapes were not ripe enough to provide
enough sugar. Some countries and wine areas ban
this practice.
Sussreserve - In Germany unfermented sweet
grape juice is added to sweeten a final wine that
is too dry. It is also practiced in New Zealand for
some German style wines.
FORTIFIED WINES
Sherry when sweet, is a dessert wine made by
blending very sweet wine, made from the
Pedro Ximinez grape, to dry sherry.
Vin Du Naturel. Made by adding
brandy to sweet grape juice.
Port and similar wines. Produced by
stopping the fermentation process of
a wine by adding grape spirit at 95%
proof, at a time when a lot of sugar
has still to be fermented. This then
stays in the wine to make it sweet.
OTHER SWEET WINES
Raisin wine - Grapes are air dried, usually on
straw mats. They shrivel up like raisins and thus
concentrate the sugar. This process is used in
many countries.
Ice Wine - When temperatures fall to about -7C or
19F grapes for icewine can be picked. The water
in the grapes freezes out but sugars and solids
remain in the juice.
Noble Rot - These are made from grapes that have
been affected by Botrytis Cinerea (Noble Rot),
which is a fungus that pierces the skin of the grape
and allows water to escape. This then concentrates
the sugar content but looks uninviting on the vine.
Food and Sweet Wines - Ideal with sweet fruit
and many desserts. Some are red but mostly white
and a golden colour. Some are also used to make a
dessert. Oddly enough a strong dessert wine such
as Sauterne or Tokaji Aszu can be matched with
a blue cheese such as Roquefort. The salt in the
cheese and the sweetness of the wine make good
partners.
Conclusions...
Sweet wines are best served as a last course in a meal but of course whenever you prefer. They
benefit from a little cooling and to see how they work with food, try a sip of the wine first and then a
sample of food and then again a sip of the wine. You will notice the difference. Two of the top dessert
wines are Chateau D’Yquem from Sauterne in Bordeaux and Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttoyos from Hungary.
The
Crown
“Framlingham has always been
one of my favourite market
towns to visit”.
This month Rachel Ducker was
invited along to The Crown Hotel in
Framlingham, to check out what the
past coaching inn had to offer.
‘When I visit Framlingham, I love strolling
around the castle grounds and winding
through the medieval
streets, past houses
painted in various
pastel shades.
As we entered the
hotel, set in a beautiful
Grade II listed building, I took a moment
to take everything in including the
uneven walls and exposed Tudor oak
beams.
Friday evening shortly commenced and
the atmosphere from the bar and lounge
areas started to come alive. You could
tell the weekend was now in full swing!
Although I have enjoyed many a coffee,
(or a cheeky glass of red wine) in The
Crown, I had never experienced a stay,
44

FOOD FOOD & DRINK DRINK
so I was very excited to see the room.
We checked in, and were shown up to
room 8, by the lovely Will at reception.
I was immediately taken back by the
grand four-poster bed, elegant furniture,
and not forgetting our very own Illy
coffee machine!
The best part about this room was that
it felt like we’d stepped back in time.
“Although modern and
contemporary in appearance,
the squeaky floorboards gave the
game away; we were in fact still
immersed in past history.”
You could just imagine what the room
was like in times gone by. After a quick
freshen up we headed down to the
lounge to enjoy a pre-dinner drink. I
couldn’t resist a sneaky look at the
dinner menu.
It was full of classic choices to suit most
palates, as well as homemade pizzas
and bar classics.
After our drink we headed through to
the restaurant, dark blue and green walls
were highlighted tastefully with parrots
and birds under low lit lighting.
With my order in mind I beckoned my
partner to hurry up with his decision!
I began with an unusual dish named 63°
Egg – A Velvety Smooth Slow Cooked
45

NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | ISSUE 2016 #49 | ISSUE | FOOD #49 & DRINK
Egg on a Ragout of Beans, finished with
Broccoli Pesto and Parmesan.
My partner opted for the more elaborate
Rabbit Rillette – Pulled Rabbit &
Pistachio Rille with a Pistachio Puree,
succulent Peppered Peach and Salad
Garnish.
We were both really impressed with our
choices – although I still think I chose the
better dish!
Onto the main event, as a white meat
lover, I decided on the Chicken Wrapped
in Parma Ham, served with Mushroom
Duxelles, Peas and Slow Cooked
Sweet leeks. The Chicken was cooked
superbly and I have to say my favourite
accompaniment on the dish were
the Peas. They really complimented
the other flavours, which was slightly
unexpected. Power to the peas!
My partner selected the Shin of Beef
with Roasted Carrot Puree, Silky Mashed
Potato and Greens. It didn’t last very
long and after having a little nibble
myself; I have to say the dish was very
yummy indeed.
After a short interval, although the
portion sizes were very generous we
couldn’t pass on a dessert.
True to form, my partner, the chocoholic
in our household, decided upon the
Chocolate Brownie, with Ice cream,
whilst I chose Cherry Bakewell, a firm
favourite of mine.
The food was absolutely delicious and
well presented. It was a truly enjoyable
meal in a very relaxed, yet buzzing
setting.
What we loved most about The Crown
was the intimate setting and friendly
service; we felt that the staff really went
out of their way to make our experience
as special as possible.
To round up the evening, after our meal
we scurried upstairs to our room, finding
the time to make use of the coffee
machine and enjoy the huge plasma TV.
After some Friday night shows (it simply
has to be done) it was then time to dive
into the four poster bed!
I had a really good nights sleep, but was
surprised to wake up to the sound of the
market, which takes place on a Tuesday
and Saturday.
This truly set the mood of staying in a
beautiful and traditional market town!
We would highly recommend a dine
going back with friends at Christmas!
Aldeburgh F&D
Festival
RACHEL DUCKER CHECKS OUT THIS YEARS EVENT AT SNAPE MALTINGS...
Last month I had the pleasure of attending the annual Aldeburgh
Food & Drink festival 2016. This festival showcases the very best of
Suffolk produce, and what fine produce there was on offer...
50

NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | ISSUE 2016 #49 | ISSUE | FOOD #49 & DRINK
The event took place in the beautiful setting
of Snape Maltings, next to the River Alde and
close to the Suffolk coast, where reed-covered
marshlands stretch into the distance towards
Aldeburgh. This year, I had my partners in crime
with me, Lois and Becca, whilst Sam helped out
with the photography!
As we arrived, we didn’t know where to start, so
without thinking, we all scattered of like ants,
only to realise we had in fact we had all split up
to investigate the scrumptious smells that were
luring us in. A few of my particular favourites
included Calvors, who specialise in larger and
ale… this was one of my first stops… well, it
was a hot day and I had to make sure I didn’t
get dehydrated!
Shortly after this pit stop, came my first purchase
of the day, which was at ‘Bakers’, who specialise
in baking for dogs. For those of you who know
me you will know that our dog Archie, (column
found on page 122) is one spoilt puppy, so
naturally the first purchase was for him!
As we ventured and sampled our way through
delicious smells and brightly coloured displays,
we also took time to visit the two cookery
demonstration stages hosting visiting and
local chefs.
The marque this year was home to Suffolk’s finest
producers. In here we loved watching the crowds
sampling away, some of the displays looked like
pieces of artwork. With over 90 food and drink
producers from Suffolk, many from just a few
miles away, all selling their produce including
raw milk, organic vegetables, sourdough bread,
award winning beer and spirits from sponsors
Adnams, cider from Aspall and delicious
street food. It was a wonderful event, more
news can be found on the website. For more
VALLEY CONNECTION
Unlike most traditional Indian restaurants,
Valley Connection, also known to the locals
as ‘VC’, pride themselves in offering their
customers a contemporary and relaxed
surrounding to dine in.
54

NOVEMBER 2016 | ISSUE #49
After being shown to our elegantly dressed
table we were presented with a vast menu of
mouth-watering dishes. Indecisive, we asked
for Mr Shahid to recommend a few dishes to
us. Without hesitation he pointed us in the
right direction.
Traditionally starting the meal we ordered an
array of poppadoms with delicious chutneys,
followed by a scrumptious selection of Onion
Bhajis, Prawn Purees and Kebabs.
The main course consisted of a selection of
colourful, delicately spiced dishes, including
Salmon Tikka, Chicken Pordanishi, Haryali
Massala to name but a few!
Mr Shahid visited India last year to take part in
the Taste of Britain Awards, since then his new
dishes have also been added to the extensive
menu, as well as a new Christmas tasting
menu, in time for the festive season.
We spoke to a few of the other customers at
VC and here is what they had to say.
Full of atmosphere and character,
you can enjoy award-winning
dishes in relaxing and peaceful
surroundings.
The lighting and textures of the dinning room,
all set within a spacious layout, present a
traditional theme that you can really cosy up
in.
At this Bury St Edmunds restaurant, you can
enjoy an up market dining experience with
menus that focus on Indian continental dishes
to Bangladeshi cuisine.
We visited Valley Connection to sample the
delights on offer. As we arrived, owner Mr
Shahid and his fabulous team warmly greeted
us, as always.
“We love the atmosphere and the
very friendly staff. We always have
enjoyable evenings and feel very
welcome every time we come.” –
Ellie and Barney
We spoke to a few of the other customers at
BECCLES BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR A FIFTH YEAR
Now in its 5th year, the Beccles
Beer Festival has become one of
the most popular events in
Beccles calendar...
Last year more than 1500 people
visited the 3 day beer festival,
drinking over 4,000 pints of real
ale, cider, perry and craft lager from
25 different breweries within 30
miles of Beccles.
Organisers Graham Elliott and
Beccles Lido Director, Shaun
Crowley, told Bounce Magazine
“This is the biggest beer festival in
the region and real ale enthusiasts
travel from all over East Anglia. It’s
not just a celebration of local ales
but it’s held in Beccles Public Hall
to raise funds for Beccles Lido – and so it also celebrates
these 2 fantastic community run Beccles attractions!”
From Friday-Sunday 18-20 November, the 5th Beccles Beer
Festival will feature some very special ales not available
on draft anywhere else, such as Pink Panther, as well as
festival stalwart Green Jack Ripper!
But Shaun was keen to emphasise that this beer festival
isn’t just for the boys, and a team of ladies is again set to
be behind the bar on Friday for Ladies Night, you might
even find Bounce’s own Rachel pulling a pint; and there is
a fully licensed bar selling wines, spirits and soft drinks for
the non-ale drinkers. There will also be live music on Friday
evening from local bands Owl & Wolves and Old School
Blues, and on Saturday evening the return of the hugely
popular Murphys Lore.
So make this a weekend to get over to Beccles – and why
not use the bus or train so that you can really enjoy a
selection of the tipples on offer?
THE
CAMEL
POSE
(oosh -TRAHS-anna)
ustra = camel
Benefits
Reduces fat on thighs
Opens up the hips, stretching deep hip flexors
Improves posture
Opens the chest, improving respiration
Relieves lower back pain
Cures constipation
Precautions:
Those having problems related to neck, knee and
back injury should not perform this asana.
How to try the pose:
1. Kneel on the floor with your knees hip width
and thighs perpendicular to the floor. Rotate your
thighs inward slightly, narrow your hip points, and
firm but don’t harden your buttocks. Press your
shins and the tops of your feet firmly into floor.
2.Rest your hands on the back of your pelvis,
bases of the palms on the tops of the buttocks,
fingers pointing down. Use your hands to spread
the back pelvis and lengthen it down through
your tail bone. Then lightly firm the tail forward,
toward the pubis. Inhale and lift your heart by
pressing the shoulder blades against your
back ribs.
3. Now lean back against the firmness of the
tail bone and shoulder blades. Then press your
thighs back to perpendicular, turn your torso
back to neutral, and touch the second hand to its
foot. If you’re not able to touch your feet without
compressing your lower back, turn your toes
under and elevate your heels.
4. Release the front ribs and lift the front of the
pelvis up, toward the ribs. Then lift the lower
back ribs away from the pelvis to keep the lower
spine as long as possible. Press your palms firmly
against your soles (or heels), with the bases of
the palms on the heels and the fingers pointing
toward the toes.
5. Stay in this pose anywhere from 30 seconds to
a minute. To exit, bring your hands onto the front
of your pelvis, at the hip points. Inhale and lift
the head and torso up by pushing the hip points
down, toward the floor. If your head is back, lead
with your heart to come up, not by jutting the
chin toward the ceiling and leading with your
brain. Rest in Child’s Pose for a few breaths.
With thanks to www.yogajournal.com/poses.
Please take care in all poses, if unsure please
attend a class or ask for a private lesson.
Creating a
Stress Free Christmas
A peaceful home creates a relaxing
atmosphere in which families and
loved ones can thrive.
Christmas can be a very stressful time of year.
For many the Christmas holiday period is a mass
of complex social interactions with family or
relatives, some of whom you may rather not see.
Some people rate Christmas as being more
stressful than divorce or being burgled.
Here are some tips and advice to make your
Christmas as stress-free as possible.
Plan Ahead
Start making a list of things you need to do for
Christmas early: for example, shopping, food
and presents, decorations, seating plans or travel
arrangements.
Shop Online
Although shopping locally has many advantages,
High Street shopping just before Christmas can
be particularly stressful, often cold and wet and
with hundreds of other stressed people trying
to find the ‘perfect’ gift. Shop online from the
comfort of your own home as you’ll not only save
time and be less stressed but will probably save
money too.
Practise Breathing
When we’re stressed our heart beat increases and
our breathing shallows, it’s all part of the fight or
flight reaction. Work on reversing this process
and take time to breathe deeply.
Have a ‘Great Escape’ Plan!
It’s a good idea to have some pre-planned
excuses to escape from proceedings if they get
too stressful.
Life is not meant to be stressful, the purpose of
life is to be happy. Putting some effort in now
means that during December you will have time
to concentrate on the fun parts of the holidays,
making good food, spending time relaxing with
people you love and having fun!
If stress is taking over your life, be kind to yourself
and take steps to make your life easier. Break the
big things into small things, then focus on one
thing at a time.
Collective Enfranchisement
Provided that at least 50% of the flats in the building
who are qualifying tenants participate and the building
qualifies, the landlord is unable to refuse to sell the
freehold.
A number of leaseholders are growing increasingly
dissatisfied with their management company for either
excessively charging or taking too long to address their
problems. In many cases the benefits of purchasing the
freehold strongly outweigh the initial cost and additional
responsibility for leaseholders. It gives the leaseholders
control of their building – they can decide what work
needs to be done and who is best value for money to
carry it out. In addition to this in many cases it will increase
the value and saleability of their property.
Luke Stockings at
Rudlings Wakelam
explains how you can
buy your freehold.
Bury St. Edmunds has seen a steady rise in the
price of leasehold flats in the last 12 months.
Property prices increased 9.26% in the ten months
between September 2015 and July 2016, and the Brexit
result, although a surprise to many, has shown little sign of
slowing the growth of the leasehold property market in
Suffolk. This has led to a number of leaseholders
considering extending their lease or purchasing the
freehold interest jointly with other leaseholders within their
building.
A lease is a deteriorating asset - with every year that
passes the value is reduced. By extending the lease or
purchasing the freehold a leaseholder is protecting their
biggest asset from being devalued over time.
Some leaseholders have the right, subject to
qualification, to join together and buy the freehold and
any head-lease of their building. This right is granted by
law under the Leasehold Reform and Urban Development
Act 1993 (as amended) and this Act outlines the
complicated process and time restrictions governing
“collective enfranchisement”.
In order to qualify for collective enfranchisement the
property must contain at least two flats and at least two
thirds of the flats must be owned by qualifying tenants (a
leaseholder who has a lease that was initially granted for
a term of more than 21 years).
www.rudlings-wakelam.com
79
The person named in the initial notice who will acquire
the property from the landlord is known as the “nominee
purchaser”. The most common practice is to set up a
company that is registered at Companies House which is
wholly owned by the participating tenants. The nominee
purchaser will be responsible for the management of the
building upon completion.
Correct notices need to be served at the right time and
information provided by the leaseholders to the freeholder
within strict deadlines. Once the initial notice has been
served the procedure is running and failure to respond
within the deadline will risk the application being rejected
as invalid. It is very important to ensure that if the nominee
purchaser is to be a company, the company has been set
up prior to submitting the initial notice.
The role of the solicitor includes the preparation of
information for the action, setting up a company to be the
nominee purchaser (if the chosen method), serving the
initial notice, responding to the landlord’s request for
substantiation of claim, providing evidence of title and
amending the terms of the leases after enfranchisement.
To check the eligibility of the property, the lease and the
leaseholder, to discuss the potential advantages of
purchasing the freehold and to receive friendly and
helpful advice in relation to this, please
Skin health
IN YOUR 30’S
Whilst generally the skin still has
good function until the age around
30, physiological changes are
continually happening.
Lifestyle impacts greatly, and the less care that is
taken in protecting the skin the faster the signs of
ageing will become apparent. As you get further
into your 30’s the luminosity of youth wanes and
the complexion can appear lifeless. You still feel
young, but tiredness with a hectic lifestyle can
begin to show.
The initial signs of ageing are subtle, but the cell
renewal and collagen production will begin to
slow and hydration and elasticity of the skin vary
until fine lines and expression etch themselves
into the skin. Focus on boosting the skin’s
performance with appropriate exfoliation and
hydration. Avoid the dullness of a dehydrated
skin.
This decade can be pressurised with mortgage,
children and career advancement, so I have
designed especially for Bounce readers, an
express 30 min. facial for face/neck costing only
£30 using the premier skincare range Medik8.
Medik8 enzyme exfoliation and
facial massage with Glow Oil...
The enzyme is a blend of active ingredients
selected for their potency and gentle
regenerating action to enable the skin to
function more efficiently whilst the wonderful
repairing Vitamin C and Otto rose oil boosts the
suppleness. 30 minute treatment costing £30.
The results are almost instantly visible so this is
a great morale as well as skin booster!
It is also a great introduction to the range of
Medik8 skin peels which are on promotion. 3
Medik8 skin peels for £150.
THE HAIR TRENDS WE
WISH WE COULD FORGET
SPONSORED BY CABELLO, HALESWORTH
Going crazy with the crimper, cutting your
hair in the shape of a bowl and rocking the
poodle perm like Kylie are just some of the
worst hair trends of all time.
Online hair and beauty retailer Hairtrade.com has
dug deep into the archives and discovered which
past looks are really worth forgetting.
spikes, these are just some of the hair and beauty
looks that need to be wiped out from memory.
Also making an appearance on the list is the
current ‘mun’ look – otherwise known as the man
bun. This can usually be spotted on the head of
gentleman while trawling the high street or even
when taking in a game of football – it seems a
selection of players are braving a new style.
From thinking you looked amazing with your rainbow
clip-in streaks to going through a whole tub
of gel to create huge (and possibly dangerous)
We’ve all rocked past hairstyles that we regret but
did we really need all of those products and
gadgets. Here are the worst hair trends of all time:
HAIR & BEAUTY
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | ISSUE 2016 #49 | ISSUE | HAIR #49& BEAUTY
1. GETTING CRIMPED
One for the 90s girls out there – our crimpers
were our favourite gadgets of our childhood.
How cool we thought we looked with our
crinkled Afros!
6. CURTAINS
We have the likes of The Backstreet Boys and
N-Sync to thank for this one. It wasn’t a school
playground unless one boy sported curtains –
2. THE BOWL CUT
Both men and women took inspiration from
the humble cooking bowl not too long ago and
there’s even talk of it making a comeback. The
simple style is created by rocking a straight
fringe at the front with the rest of the hair the
same length all the way around.
3. RAINBOW COLOUR CLIP-INS
Celebrities including Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie
and Christina Aguilera were big fans of the
colourful style a couple of decades ago and
of course, we just had to copy. No matter the
colour, it was clipped into our hair. The more
streaks the better.
4. SERIOUS SPIKES
Also known as ‘liberty spikes’, this hairstyle was
popular in 90s punk culture and took a lot of
work to achieve. To create this style, one would
need two hours of hard graft and several tubs
or bottles of hair gel. Think huge clumps of hair
standing up on end – all over the head. It must
have been a hazard.
5. MULLET
Take a look back through your family photos
and one member will have gone through the
mullet stage. First invented in the early 70s
sported by both men and women. Think short
on top and front, long at the back.take a loose
strand from the back of your head and twist
around the bunch, covering the band.
similar to the bowl cut, but with a standout centre
parting.
7. POODLE PERM
This hairstyle dominated the 80s for women with
icons such as Kylie Minogue, Madonna and Cher
all turning to the curl. The bigger the better, it
wasn’t easy to go from straight to poodle. The
process was done using tight heated rollers and a
LOT of hairspray.
8. THE ‘MUN’
As already mentioned, we couldn’t have put
together this list without throwing in one modern
mistake. You can’t miss it, look out for shaven
back and sides and long and floppy on top, all
fixed into a small man bun with a hair band.
Aromatherapy for the Skin + the Soul...
Relax and unwind before the hectic
festive season gets into full swing with
an Aromatherapy Facial.
SK Clinic + Spa are offering a 1-hour Aromatherapy
Facial at £35.00 instead of £45.00 throughout
November. Also, if you buy an Enzymo-Spherides
Peeling Cream (50ml) you will get a Phyto-Gel
Cleanser free (trial size worth £17.00).
An aromatherapy facial is a prescriptive facial with
a holistic approach involving the thorough use of
essential oils which are tailored to different skin
types to treat your specific needs.
Choose from the two massage techniques including
the ‘Lymph Aroma Massage’ to aid circulation and
elimination of lymph fluid or the ‘Aroma Pressure
Point Massage’ to relieve headaches and sinus
congestion. We will select the oil appropriate for
your skin type, whilst incorporating unique rituals of
touch to help you relax like never before.
Why an Aromatherapy Facial?
A relaxing aromatherapy facial treats the skin with a
holistic approach, using unique massage techniques
for the face, neck and décolletage. They are
becoming more popular due to our ever increasing
knowledge of essential oils and how beneficial they
can be for our skin. As our lives become busier than
ever - taking to an aromatherapy facial as a means
to pamper the skin and unwind thoroughly at
the same time is the ideal treatment.
Our Aromatherapy Face Oils are pre-blended
for specific skin types using the highest quality
essential oils and carrier oil; the carrier oil of
choice is hazelnut, which is the second most
expensive oil and its natural affinity to the skin
is of most benefit in terms of nourishment.
Rich in vitamins A, B, E it is easily absorbed and
softens the skin.
Dry skin will become highly nourished and
toned, using oils such as Jasmine Essential
Oil, Ylang Ylang Essential Oil and Vitamin E
to help ease dryness, fine lines and stress.
Sensitive skin will be soothed with moisture
balance restored using Rose Oil, Neroli (Orange
Flowers) Essential Oil, Lavender Essential Oil
and Vitamin E. Sandalwood, Mandarin and
Grapefruit Essential Oils plus Vitamin E will
nourish sebum secretions without dehydrating
oily/combination skin and tighten enlarged
pores while smoothing and softening the skin’s
surface.
As a result, your skin glows with health
and looks fresh and radiant, your senses are
soothed and you will leave all your tension
behind feeling calm and completely relaxed.
Achieve
Great Looking
Skin
November, and we are thinking about
Christmas! If you have not yet started your
Christmas shopping, better get going with it.
Beauty brands have already started bringing their
Christmas Box Sets and I know there are some
brilliant ones out there! This month, I would like to
give some advice skincare.
A lot of people moisturize, some use it at night
and some do not. The night moisturizers are
formulated differently, they are often thicker than
your day ones and often do not have an SPF
in them. They also help the process of the skin
replanting, as our skin repairs and re-energizes
overnight.
Something like Clarins Multi Active Nuit is perfect
for the first signs of ageing. A sleeping mask
is quite a luxurious product that is to be when
needed, for example, if you’ve had a late night, it
all shows in your skin. There are plenty out there
for you to choose from, Dior’s Hydra Life range,
which is ultra hydrating, puts the water back into
dehydrated skin.
Lastly, but certainly not least, when I’ve had
a stressful time, one of my favourite products
to relax with is Clarins Tonic Bath and Shower
Concentrate, put a small amount of this in your
bath and get ready to unwind!
Maybe even put a mud mask on, like the new
L’Oréal pure clay masks and at £5 a pop you can’t
go wrong.
Your Eyebrows... As a make-up artist you are always looking
for ways to enhance your skills, that’s when I heard about the art
of Microblading.
However, almost all of them share
the same goal, to enhance the eyes
with full, glamorous lashes.
new method
of implanting
pigment into
the skin.
Microblading is a more permanent solution to a
more defined, realistic brow.
Microblading is a form of tattooing and unlike a
regular tattoo; microblading is a form of tattoo
artistry where pigment is implanted under the
skin with a manual handheld tool instead of a
machine.
The handheld tattoo allows you to draw hair-like
strokes that mimic the natural brow hair. Even
though it is not as deep as a regular tattoo, it is
still a tattoo because pigment is implanted under
the skin.
I recently trained with Epibrow in this innovative
Epibrow is a
very unique
take on Semi-
Permanent
make-up and
was established
in their very own
Brow Studios in
Glasgow.
Epibrow can help you achieve a natural looking
hair stroke, regardless of hair that is already
present. This treatment appeals to those
suffering from alopecia or other conditions that
can cause hair loss. Those that have perhaps
over plucked their eyebrows would benefit
greatly from this technique.
The pigments used in this method have been
formulated to match the original eyebrow colour.
Even if you already have brows the colour will
blend nicely into them.
After the initial treatment the brows will appear
darker but they fade significantly over a two week
period, this is why it is important that you have
a top-up approximately 4-6weeks later once the
brows have healed.
After the 4-6week top-up an annual top-up is
recommended to retain the shape and colour.
Is it painful?
No, there is some discomfort but it would not
be regarded as pain. An anaesthetic cream is
applied to numb the area before treatment. You
will be able to feel small little scratches.
What can I expect on the day?
I will analyse your brows and make
recommendations based on the shape, colour
and design that will be best suited to yourself.
Once the brow design has been mapped out
and you are happy with the shape then
the procedure will commence. You
make experience some redness after the
treatment but this will fade after a couple
of hours.
Health and Safety?
Technicians are trained to the highest level
in infection control; strict patch tests are
performed 48 hours prior to treatment.
Single use needles are used and disposed
of by adhering to strict guidelines.
A GUIDE TO
Getting
Rid
From clothes to stationary…
I’ll be the first to admit I have
enough to supply ten others.
BY RUBY REED
Why do we find it so
hard to throw things out?
It always seems to be the
excuse of- I might need that
one day.
Well how often does this day
come? It doesn’t (or very
rarely anyway!). So how to
go about this persisting trait
of hoarding.
With Christmas just around
the corner maybe this month
is the perfect time to address
the problem- making some
much needed room for all
those new presents.
Where to start the clear out?
From the wardrobe to the kitchen drawers, it’s likely
there are a few locations in your home that could
be targeted. Everyone has those ‘bit of everything’
drawers don’t they?
Well a first step to your new less cluttered home
could be spending 5 minutes on these. Do you
really need that questionable magnify glass you got
in your Christmas cracker last year?…
Perhaps it would be helpful to have some guideline
questions when it comes to keeping or chucking an
item. Try these:
When was the last time I used this?
If it was within the last year, the item has grounds
for keep. If it was over a year ago, or you’re
struggling to even remember- you know the
answer!
98

NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | #49 ISSUE | #49 LIFESTYLE
Is there a reason i’m not
using this item?
A jumper with a small
stain that won’t budge -
you’re thinking maybe one
day you’ll wear it when
you paint the spare room...
chuck!
When is the next time I
will need this?
If you know exactly when
something is going to
come in handy then of
course it should be kept!
Proceed to your next item
guilt free.
Does it mean anything to
me?
Sometimes we hold on
to things because of
their sentimental value
regardless of them not
being used. These things get the keep
pass!
taking up? Why not pass them on, or if
they may be of value put them on your
eBay selling account.
You could also donate to charity shops.
Good luck creating some extra space!
Until next month...
Some items may be in fine shape (no
doubt the reason you’ve kept them)
but if they are really not going to come
in handy, is it worth the space they are
WINTER IS ON IT’S WAY
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Rake fallen leaves - Fallen
leaves prevent light and air getting to plants -
clean them up!
Leaves are falling rapidly, and
wind and rain are on the increase.
Tender plants (such as bananas)
will need protecting from frost,
gales and freezing rains.
Tidy up borders
Cut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty
remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover
of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly
(sedum, astilbes and grasses for example). Continue
collecting and storing seed from perennials still
forming seed heads. Bring inside any tender
perennials, such as Fuchsia, Gazania, Lantana and
Abutilon, before frosts cause damage.
The Greenhouse
Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean,
mend and oil your tools and throw away anything
that is beyond hope or reasonable repair!
Drain and lag...
Save yourself untold irritation and expense by
draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps,
irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of
sudden hard frosts.
NOVEMBER 2016 | ISSUE #49
Top jobs this month:
1. Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns,
ponds and beds
2. Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent
waterlogging
3. Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year
4. Prune roses to prevent wind-rock
6. Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a
problem
7. Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubble
wrap works well
8. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using
grease bands around the trunks
9. Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into
the garden
5. Plant out winter bedding
107
10. Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed -
to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting

30TH ANNIVERSARY BLACK BELT EXTRAVAGANZA...
A martial art club based at Dairy
Hill, Halesworth and Waterlane
Sports Centre, Lowestoft, has
recently celebrated its 30th
anniversary, teaching the Korean
Martial Art of Kuk Sool Won.
In recognition of this milestone a Black
Belt extravaganza was held on Saturday
24th September. The exhibition included
over seventy practicing black belts from
both the Lowestoft and Halesworth
Clubs. The evening was also dedicated
to raising funds for two charities. Ollie’s
Heroes, a local organisation set up to
help with living and travelling expenses
for families with children who need long
term care in hospital. The second charity,
MyAware supports a condition called
Myasthenia Gravis which is a chronic
autoimmune / neuromuscular disease.
The Black Belt performance was also
dedicated to one of the clubs most valued
and respected students Terry Twist, who
sadly passed away recently after a short
illness. Terry had practiced Kuk Sool
Won for more than twenty years at the
Halesworth club.
Over the past 30 years, Senior Master
Instructors, Martin and Alison Ducker
have taught this unique martial art to
more than 2,000 students in the Waveney
region. Today, existing membership for
both clubs totals 200 students, with
ages ranging from 4 years to 80 years
old. Many of their former students have
gone on to open their own martial art
schools, not only here in the UK, but also
overseas in New Zealand and Australia.
Lowestoft Town Mayor, Mr. Nick Webb,
who attended the event, paid special
tribute to the commitment and dedication
of everyone involved in the extravaganza.
He also sincerely wished all Kuk Sool Won
members every success for the future.
SPORT
Fans were growing simply bored of watching
their beloved Ipswich – a fact that a 2-0 win over
Burton will not mask.
MUST-WIN MATCHES AGAINST THE
LOWER RANKS HIGHLIGHT WHERE
IPSWICH SIT AT PRESENT...
It comes to something when
fans look at a home match
against Burton Albion as a
‘must-win’.
No disrespect
Nigel Clough’s men who
are making a decent stab
at their debut season in
the Championship.
Especially after large
parts of their midweek
trip to Suffolk when they
deserved more than their
2-0 defeat at the hands
of Ipswich Town.
It was a landmark
evening for Mick
McCarthy – but it had
to be.
Ipswich scored their first goals in over
500 minutes – with Freddie Sears ending
his own 38-game barren run following
Luke Chambers opening goal, the skipper
almost as maligned as his manager in
recent weeks. Prior to that win, the knives
were being sharpened.
This wasn’t just the ‘keyboard warriors’ of
social media and, for once, this wasn’t just
about results on the pitch.
to
Despite the grim stats, I was always confident
Town would be beat their newly-promoted
opponents.
Just as I was equally confident that their next
match would yield no points whatsoever, and
so it proved as Newcastle comprehensively won
3-0.
Men against boys, as more than 50,000 saw
the Rafa revolution continue to gather pace.
Although McCarthy might disagree, it might
be a little too early to claim that the Toon are
watching the champions-elect.
But Newcastle are certainly the
ones to beat.
So after a horrendous run was
ended by match when Ipswich
should have won, and did, and
then lost a game they were
always expected to, where does
that leave Town?
I fear the doom-mongers
have slipped slightly into the
background. A couple of bad
results and they will return – and
they often do in greater numbers.
The future remains uncertain. Next up, as I
write this, is a home match against bottom club
Rotherham, with one win in their first 14 games.
Another must-win Mick.
MUSIC
The final night of Wild Beast’s UK tour
to support their latest release ‘Boy
King’ ended at the Cambridge Junction
this month.
Not only did they provide a remarkable and
regimented performance that’s clearly roadtested,
but they brought along an incredibly
riveting support act.
Support tonight comes from Jamie Lee’s
ever-elegant, always enthralling outfit, Money.
After a spattering of live performances
throughout the year since the January release
of their second record ‘Suicide Songs’, they
proved on the final night of this tour why they
should be intrinsically regarded as one of
today’s most ingenious songwriting troupes.
With his dry wit of a different order and a
confidence so naturally born, Lee steers a
captivated audience through a selection of
recent songs. Mesmerising as always, with an
idiosyncratic British patois.
One thing is certain of Wild Beasts. The new
material is powerful and compelling live,
much more so than on record. Opening with
‘Big Cat’, it’s still as sleazy and sexy as ever.
The stage show itself is pastellised, neon, like
a dystopian Vice City, with it’s bold lighting
and it’s games console visual rhetoric.
The Beast’s latest reincarnation works for
this stage in their career. Surprisingly, this
new direction lends itself well to the old
sound, despite hefty comparisons. Favourites
like ‘We’ve Still Got The Taste Dancing On
Our Tongues’ is tastefully reworked with
harmonising sawtooth synth parts, which
compliment the new angle.
What’s apparent from this performance is how
Wild Beasts aren’t afraid of moving away from
the last record and creating a new direction.
Always evolving, always fresh, and still never
sounding like anyone else. What makes this
bold career ethic even more commendable
is how they weave their former set into their
new persona, by remodelling the songs of old.
It’s great to see how ‘Wanderlust’ can sit so
uniformly next to new track ‘Alpha Female’.
Despite initially not caring for ‘Boy King’, it’s
always wonderful to be proved wrong when
seeing an established and respected band
perform new material live. It’s different when
seeing songs in a new light... in this particular
instance, the light is forensically bright, and
neon. Despite a shaky performance of ‘All The
King’s Men’, this set put Wild Beasts back to
the forefront and manifested their position
as one of Britain’s most distinctive and
accomplished live acts.
See you next month - Jack
SLEEPING WITH YOUR DOG IS GOOD FOR YOU...
I’ve heard it whispered, you shouldn’t do it:
inviting your dog into your bed. People believe
it’s dirty, and it’s just not good for you. People
have been saying it for years. I disagree of
course! The best thing is I have found out a
few reasons for why it is good for you, and us
four-legged best friends. It really is a win-win
situation for everyone involved!
#1: We Give You Comfort
Whether it’s our warm little bodies or rhythmic
breathing, there’s just something so comforting
about a dog. We make your bed feel even cosier!
#2: We Fight Insomnia
Our presence promotes calmness and a feeling
of safety. So, basically, we take away all of the
things that keep you up at night!
asked, can work wonders during a particularly
tough time.
#5: We Make You Feel Safe
Knowing that there is another presence watching
over you when you’re at your most vulnerable
is such a comforting feeling. Our super hearing
and tendency to bark at strangers are all factors
in this.
#6: It’s Good For Us Too!
There’s nothing in the world that your dog loves
more than you, so allowing us to spend that
extra snuggle time will make our day. We receive
comfort from you in the same way that you do
from them, so this sleep arrangement is good for
everyone!
Twitter @bouncearchie
#3: Snuggling With Us Relieves Stress And
Anxiety
As therapy dogs have shown, a pooch’s presence
is a great stress reliever. Our positive outlook
seems to be contagious, and our attentive nature
can be very reassuring.
#4: We Help Fight Depression
One thing that dogs offer without question
is unconditional love. For someone battling
depression, this type of connection can feel
hard to come by. To receive it, with no questions
