PROLOGUE
She was there in him as the breath that he inhaled and exhaled…
She was present in every thought of his…
She was the darkness in his shadow…
She was in his every mood and…
She was there with him as a dream…
She was his! But where was she?
Why was she not with him!
His love! His life! His destiny! Why did she never think for him…
“There you go Prince!” Major Chawla motioned to a lush expanse of land that seemed to
stretch forever. It was amidst the picturesque setting of the Himalayas with the valley
stretching before them…
“Is this Sunauli?” He asked the Army official who was sitting next to him…
“Yes sir! This is Sunauli and we are supposed to go to the Post office where…”
The Major was still speaking when he stalled him and said, “No! Please! I can manage
from here.”
He did not want to bother Major Chawla more than he had already!
His dad had called the Major’s dad his best pal to arrange for the trip, and Major Aman
Chawla had done more than enough for him to reach his destination. “Are you sure?”
The Army official raised his eyebrows at the man.
“100% Sure!” came the reply. “Ok then I shall arrange for the vehicle to reach you in two
hours!“
Major Aman said. “Thanks Major!” he shook hands with him, and walked on… towards his
destiny.
again…
*****
It was exactly two days after their verbal sparring in bed, when Khushi mooned over
her prince as she typed a letter. Two blissful days spent with her love! Ever since she
took the one-week decision, she was enjoying her stay at Mehraana. This was a win -
win for her as she was not uptight and morose. But at the same time she also made the
Prince extra cautious who she thought, regarded her warily. He did not let her out of
his sight, even for a second. Whole day she was in the Corporal, and she was sure the
security was instructed to keep a track on her moments.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 5
The evening before, he took her out for dinner to an elite joint, and then to his
penthouse apartment where he made crazy love to her blowing her mind off! The
second day they went back to Mehraana after a dinner meeting, and he woke her up in
the early morning and made love to her till the wee hours. They had an argument
about going out for the weekend, and soon after that and he was off. He wanted to fly
her off to some exotic place, but she wanted to stay put. After all she had to run that
weekend…away from him…away from her destiny!
The argument then took a very nasty turn, as she refused for him to open an add-on
account with him, and when he enquired how she would manage without money, she
had replied that she didn’t need any, which infuriated him further. He then asked her
how she would run his errands where she flatly refused to any kind of involvement.
For her the less involved she was, into his affairs, the better…she thought. But the
Prince was angry. She knew he realized her intention and was cross with her, and
gave her a levelled look that very morning, while getting down from the vehicle.
Something was surely going to come by, as her Maan was very vengeful.
She shook her head in exasperation, as sleep overwhelmed her once again. It was
tough to be with the Prince. She wondered, where he got so much of energy and drive
from, when the first indication of his vengeful mood presented itself before her.
“Ma’am!”
Someone was calling her. She looked up, and found Vitthal the office attender staring
at her.
“Ji Vitthal ji?” She asked frowning at him.
“Woh Kunwar ji nay paisay denay kay liye kahaa hai.” He said.
(The Prince has asked you to give some money.)
“Kya?” (What?) She stood up in shock.
“Woh… aapsay paisay lenay kay liye kahaa hai”
(He has asked me to collect money from you.)
He said again, looking at her very oddly.
“Per…hum say kyun? Subhojot ji nahee hai kya? Accounts sction mein jayiye…” she
said weakly.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 6
(But why from me? If Subhojit has said that, you must go the accounts section.)
“Nahee Ma’am aapsay paisa manga hai…” he reiterated.
(No Ma’am! He asked me to take it from you.)
“Magar kyun?” (But why?) Khushi was bowled at that.
He shrugged and said, “Humay kya patha?”(How do I know?)
She opened her purse and asked, “Kithnay?” (How much?)
“Ji… paanch hazaar!” (Five thousands ma’am!) He declared coolly.
“Kya?” (What?) She had a five hundred rupee note that she took from Raina who she
had a very tearful reunion with the day before, promising her that she would return
after her first salary.
“Magar…” (But) she called Deepthimaan on the intercom.
None received the call, and she caught her forehead in consternation.
“Yeh kiss liye kya hum pooch sakthein hain?”
(May I ask the purpose for which this money is being used?)
She asked Vitthal.
“Haanji unhay kutch personal kam hain tho bola hai ki aap say lein…”
(Yeah Ma’am! The Prince had some personal errand to run, so he asked me to take
money from you.)
He explained.
“Oh!” She frowned and said ok and smiled at him.
“Tho aap dengi?”
(So will you be giving the money?)
He asked again…
“Aaah haan!”
(Oh! Yes!)
She tried Deepthimaan again, and this time Subhojit Sarkar his executive assistant
picked the call up and said, “Yes?”
“Subhojit, Sir hain kya?”
(Is sir around?)
Khushi asked.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 7
“Haan, magar he is busy tell me?” He asked typically.
It was a well-known fact that he was the firewall of the Corporal, who wouldn’t let
any aam janatha (Commoners) get to the Prince, which she was a glaring exception
for, and was at an odd equation with the smart executive.
“Aah…I…please ask him to talk to me its…urgent” she said in a very polite tone.
“Well he can’t Khushi…you will have to tell me.” There he was at his best!
She thought.
“Ok! Just ask him why he needs money…” she said closing one eye.
“What?” He almost yelled at her and then altered his tone and asked what are you
saying Sharma?
“That’s why I asked you to call him.” She said tongue in cheek.
“But why would he ask you. I am right here!” Khushi could actually make out his
pout through the phone.
She rolled her eyes and said, “I dunno! Please ask him Pleaaase!”
“Who is it Jithey?” His voice boomed over.
“Sir Khushi Sharma from the finance section” Subhojit replied.
Khushi grimaced at the way he tried to remind the Prince of her presence. After all,
she was one amongst some two hundred odd secreteries at the Corporal.
But little did he know that Khushi Sharma had a steaming night with his Prince the
night before ha! She snorted.
“Oh! What’s her problem?” She could hear the Prince erupting.
“Nothing sir! She is talking about some stupid money that er…sorry sir you asked her
for…er… “ Subhojit tried his best to make it scandalous.
“Oh! That! Tell her to give it from my purse.” He said.
“What? Sir?” Subhojit’s voice was hoarse with disbelief.
“Are you deaf Jithey? She has my purse ask her to give money from that” he barked,
and said, “Don’t waste time now, and come back here quick…”
There was a minute’s silence before Subhojit found his voice, as he said very
incredulously, “Ah..umm…he says…”
She heard that.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 8
She froze, as Subhojit croaked, “You, it seems like…have his purse…and er…you
may give advance from that.”
“Er… Uhh!” Khushi said in reply.
“You have his purse?” He asked her, and she could hear Deepthimaan’s voice
booming, “Bloody hell! Ask her to give it, and you close that convo and get back
here, Jithey!”
“Ok give him” Subhojith said and cut the call.
She had his purse? She caught her head and then she remembered. In the morning at
the signal, a young boy cleaned their windshield, although they forbade him. But, in
the end, he had asked her to pay him, so Deepthimaan gave her his purse and she
dropped it back into her bag…oh!
She searched frantically and she saw the purse. A very premium quality tan coloured
purse, which was hand made and branded and it had several cards in it and she picked
up five thousand notes and gave them to Vtthal, whose eyes were popping out of his
sockets already.
Khushi closed her eyes in absolute embarrassment. What would they all be thinking!
Raina walked in late, and she was full of her woes with the little baby, and Khushi
was distracted for a while when Avadhani’s call came.
“Khushi what are the last three digits on the elite card of Kunwarji?” He asked her
very oddly.
“What sir?” She was baffled at his sudden query.
“You heard me?” His voice was full of disdain…
“But how do I know sir?” She asked him…
“He asked me to ask you!” Came his crisp retort.
“What?” Khushi almost fell off her chair…
“But how do I know sir?” she asked him again.
“I told you! He told me to ask you.” He said conspiratorily.
Khushi frowned, and Raina raised her eyebrow in question.
Khushi nodded at her and said, “I will find out…”
“No you need to tell me now.” Avadhani insisted.
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 9
“But sir I don’t know that Maa…Sir’s card even exists so…” she scratched her head.
“He asked me to ask you…you know?” The man was dense.
Khushi understood… The rat…was getting back at her and was tryng to play foul by
exposing her. Already Vitthal and Subhojit must be gossiping about how the prince’s
purse was with Khushi Sharma in the Finance section!
She made a face and dug into her bag and heard a squeal and braced herself from
falling from her chair.
“What is that hon?” Sheena one of the show offs in the section was eying the purse…
“Ummm… whose is that… and a man’s valet in your purse?” She grabbed it before
Khushi coud do anything about it and opened it and her jaw dropped…
The pic of Thakur Kunwar Deepthimaan Shingh ji Beerendra Singh ji Rathore on the
driving license smiled at her.
“What is this babes?” She wagged the purse, and Khushi made a grab at it but Sheena
was too quick!
“Oh! How come his purse is with you?” She demanded.
Khushi again made a grab which Sheena once again avoided Khushi, as Avadhanis
voice boomed over, “Is this an office or some pro-kabaddi areana?”
“Sorry sir” both Khushi and Sheena balked under his scorching gaze…
“Now! Khushi! Gimme the numbers…” he barked.
“Yes sir” Khushi said, and took the purse from Sheena and searched for the card, and
wrote the numbers and looked up and found Avadhani’s eyes popping out as he was
sweating so heavily that she was sure his heart attack would be in the next second or
so…
“Is this Kunwar ji’s wallet? He asked incredulously.
She smarted indicating a yes.
He looked at it and then at her, and then at it and at her, and shook his head and said,
“Time for my BP tablets” and left with the note that Khushi handed him.
“What have we here babes?” Raina’s voice cut through Khushi’s thoughts soon after
Avadhnai left.
“What?” Khushi asked Raina.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 10
“You are asking me? What is the Prince’s purse doing with you?”
Khushi froze but only for a second. She immediately recovered and explained
everything about how she happened to be carrying it.
“Oh!” Raina said and suggested, “Why don’t you return it dear?”
“Yeah I will.” She said, called SurPal on the intercom and asked him to come over.
SurPal got up to go to Khushi, as Deepthimaan glared at him while being briefed by
Subhojit.
“Kya?” (What?) He asked the Prince.
“Mujhey patha hain thu kahaan jaa rahaa hai… Math ley” he said simply and
resumed his conversation with Subhojit.
(I know what you are planning to do. Don’t take it!)
SurPal walked down stairs, and Khushi rushed to him saying, “Suri Bhaiyya yeh
Kunwar ka purse…”
(Suri Bhaiyya, please take the prince’s purse.)
“Nahee hum…nahee lei sakthey” he said.
(Nope I can’t take it.)
“Hain? Kyun? Kyun ki hum ko allergy hai” he smiled at her.
(Coz I am allergic to leather.)
“Magar aap kay paas bhi tho hogi na?”
(But you must be having one too.)
She asked frowning at his odd behavior.
“Hai tho! Magar Kunwar kay purse say allergy hai” he smiled agan.
(Yeah but I am allergic to only the Prince’s purse.)
“Per kyun?” (But why?) She asked him.
“Arey Samjho!” (Please understand!) He said winking at her.
“Unhonay lenay say manaa kiya hai?” She asked him finally.
(He forbade you from taking it. Didn’t he?)
“Bhai yeh humnay nahee kahaa” he said, as he retreated.
(Well! I didn’t say that ok?)
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 11
“Tho hum khud jaayengay” she said, but realized that’s what he wanted her to do. No
way! She sat in her chair pouting…
At exactly half past four a banker walked into her cabin, and was introduced by Asish
who was with the finance section.
“I came to collect the card that Deepthimaan Singh ji holds for our bank. It has an
anamoly he explained and since he is an HNI I am here ma’am.”
“Ok” she said not knowing what to do.
“Can you please give it to me?” He asked. She shook her head and did the
needful…after half hour, he left and Khushi was fuming… In the half hour, she had to
produce a key, a small slip on which some transaction number was written and had to
do a swipe for a friend. Apart from that almost a dozen people were gossiping about
the purse in her possession. She had a headache brewing.
She had had enough! It was so embarrassing!
She stormed into his cabin, and to her utter dismay she found Avadhani seated there
with Venkat one of their finace guys.
“Sharma how can you barge in without knocking?” Avadhani glowered at her.
She looked at Deepthimaan who was busy suddenly checking at his nails. She
realized, he was not going to support her. She said sorry to Avadhani, and walked to
the desk and placed the purse on the table saying, “Sir! I just came to return your
purse.”
Deepthimaan looked at her then, and she gasped at the naughty glint he had in his
eyes.
“Oh! Thank you for taking care of it. Might have forgotten last night” he drawled, and
Khushi distinctly could see Avadhani’s disapproving glance from the corner of her
eye.
The rat! He wanted to embarrass her… for not letting him open an account for her.
She was a tough nut though.
She raised her chin and said, “No sir, it was in the morning!”
“Oh was it? Didn’t pay attention” he said, winking at her victoriously.
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 12
Thats when Khushi realized what a blunder she committed! He said the night before,
while she said that very morning. In a way she confirmed his statement, and also that
they were together since the night before.
She suddenly felt a surge of anger in her and she hissed, “Please be careful with your
personal belongings.”
He looked at her sharply at that and said, “Believe me I am! That’s why I leave them
with my most trusted prople for safe keeping…”
“Tell me is there any cash in it?” he inquired casually, irritating her further.
“Yeah another ten k that’s all…” she replied.
“Did you return the card to the bank fellow?” Came his next question.
“Yes sir! I did and also that transaction pin.” She tried to sound professional.
“Ok…shall we go shopping today?” He continued in the same tone.
“No I promised Maa saa I will be home soon…” She blabbered in a flow.
“Ok! Then that is ok…else draw more money” he said nonchalantly.
“I said we are not…” Khushi then realsied that they had an audience, and looked at
Deepthimaan who was trying his best to hide a smug smile.
She was trapped!
She glared at Deepthimaan, who raised an eyebrow at her. She looked away angry
about her situation.
“You may leave Ms. Sharma” Avadhanis voice cut in and she stormed off.
