PROLOGUE
She was there in him as the breath that he inhaled and exhaled…
She was present in every thought of his…
She was the darkness in his shadow…
She was in his every mood and…
She was there with him as a dream…
She was his! But where was she?
Why was she not with him!
His love! His life! His destiny! Why did she never think for him…
“There you go Prince!” Major Chawla motioned to a lush expanse of land that seemed to
stretch forever. It was amidst the picturesque setting of the Himalayas with the valley
stretching before them…
“Is this Sunauli?” He asked the Army official who was sitting next to him…
“Yes sir! This is Sunauli and we are supposed to go to the Post office where…”
The Major was still speaking when he stalled him and said, “No! Please! I can manage
from here.”
He did not want to bother Major Chawla more than he had already!
His dad had called the Major’s dad his best pal to arrange for the trip, and Major Aman
Chawla had done more than enough for him to reach his destination. “Are you sure?”
The Army official raised his eyebrows at the man.
“100% Sure!” came the reply. “Ok then I shall arrange for the vehicle to reach you in two
hours!“
Major Aman said. “Thanks Major!” he shook hands with him, and walked on… towards his
destiny.
The colony was gated. And there was no security for individual properties.
A patrol van with a searchlight scoured through, and she waited and
slowly slipped in and breathed her relief. But now what? She walked to the
property on cliff and knew she had few minutes before the patrol van
caught her. It started pouring down and she could not walk anymore. She
walked up to the building and she saw a faint light inside. Should she
knock and ask for help? But… she was actually not supposed to get in. This
was not a housing board colony that she could knock at the door and say,
“Hi! I am lost and there is someone stalking me and I need help.” They
would first put her behind bars for tress passing. But she did not have any
choice. She was cold hungry and most importantly exhausted.
She walked up to the front door and pressed the calling bell. Nothing
happened. She pressed again… and after two minutes again.
She knocked on the door the third time round and when nothing
happened, turned round to leave and then the door opened and an
elderly gentleman asked her, “Who are you?”
Khushi could make out the voice anywhere! It was Kunwar Deepthimaan
Singh Rathore!
She opened her eyes slowly and saw him bending over her, and she saw
that he was absolutely worried going by the frown on his face.
“Ummm….” she said and shivered and Deepthimaan swore loudly, “%^$#!
Man! Its weekend and I want to…bloody hell chill and you are ready to
make me busy again…sitting right on my nerves!”
Khushi frowned at him… what was he saying! She looked at him with that
expression, and he tightened his hold round her swearing, “No! Don’t you
dare look at me that way dammit! You bloody well know it’s me. And by
now I am like some Attila the Hun ready to torture you at every given
turn.”
Khushi stared at him as her body and neck ached, and she realized she
had very high fever. She tried to talk, “Sir… uhhh…I…”
“Shut up!” He hissed. “Just shut up. How do you find out where I am all the
time? Do you have a radar or something in built so that you track me and
get to me?” He turned and walked a few paces dishing out, “Earlier it was
only weekdays and the office now since last two times, its weekends also
and now the settings include outdoors also! Oh God! How do you do it?
Do you do it by design or it just is my sucking kismet? He was still talking
when Khushi thought the better off it and got up and walked two steps
towards him but swooned and fell with a thud.
Deepthimaan turned and saw her falling and his blood pressure shot up!
He swore saying, “That does it woman! Now I am going to so…not spare
you and rushed to her but when he held her he realized she had
temperature. He put her back on the couch and rang the doctor up and
asked him over the phone as it was raining heavily and said, “Fine! But if it
gets worse you might have to visit... Thanks”.
Deepthimaan thought. He didn’t know anything about her at all. He
looked deeply into her eyes and asked, “Then why don’t you tell me who
you are?”
He saw it then. A flicker of something like panic that developed into an
avalanche of despair and then got converted into rage, and spewed red
through her eyes as she said, “No!”
“Why?” He asked her softly. He had to get to her somehow! The reason he
didn’t know himself. At least not yet!
She tried to get free but he stepped a little closer and said, “I want to know
Khushi.” “No!” She said and closed her eyes when he bent to look into
them.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 7
What was it with him that she felt so bound by him? Somehow he could get to
her at some level. From the day she met him in Mukund’s cabin. It must be
some soul thing, which her dad had always said.
Some people have profound impact on us even if they are strangers to us. He
had said…
“Tell me Khushi” he insisted.
The rain was pouring down and they were standing right there by the
roadside, chatting up like old friends! He thought twisting his lips in wry
humour. He would never have believed if anyone told him that on a
weekend he would be standing and grilling junior staff in a heavy
downpour and that too on a hunch, which had nothing to do with his
profession.
“There is nothing to say!” She almost whispered, her concentration on the
first button on his striped executive shirt that was soggy.
He bent forward and said softly in her ears, “I want to know!”
“Please!” She pleaded with him. But heart of hearts she knew she was
weakening by his nearness.
The man knew how to play his cards right! She thought.
“How will anyone help you if you won’t tell someone?” he whispered again.
She lost it for a second but recovered immediately and pushed him with
all her might and said, “I don’t need help sir. And no one needs to know
about me. Is that clear?” Deepthimaan stared at her for a long time and
then shrugged and said, “Ok! As you wish!” He went and started the
engine and raised it twice as she stood staring at the man. He just took a
no.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 8
“But you can’t treat her that way sir!” Khushi found her tongue slipping
away! She was blabbering out of nervousness and she was in big trouble.
“Oh yeah!” He said suddenly sitting beside her on the huge couch. “So
what do you suggest doc Khushi? That I give her a farewell party and wish
her adieu? Do you think she would accept that?”
“Why not? Today’s woman is very clear in what she wants. You could have
explained it instead of breaking her heart. You see she wants you to be
her partner, and what’s wrong in it?” Khushi went on… Deepthimaan’s
eyes narrowed.
“Did it occur to you that I don’t want her?” He asked very coldly.
Khushi realized how carried away she got, as she realised she was sitting
next to him and he was absolutely incensed.
“Er…” Khushi looked away.
“Did you ever think I might have a good reason for doing that to a
woman?” He asked her again.
“Er…sir…” Khushi could not counter him… “Do you think men don’t have
feelings?” He rasped.
“Do they?” She blurted out before she could stop herself.
He glared at her then and as if he couldn’t stop himself bent a little and
asked, “Why do you have such a poor opinion of the male species?” “I
didn’t…er…say I do...” she mumbled.
“Then why are you so critical of us.” He demanded.
“No! I am not. I just said you could do what you did without
hurting…her…sir…” She explained.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 9
“What about me? Was she thinking of me? Did she get me, when I said I
don’t want her anymore?” he said.
“But she is not a toy! You know that you can just…er…leave her just like
that! You should have at least given her some time…” Khushi was jerked
up as he asked her, “You mean to say I should sleep with her even when I
have no feelings for her just to appease her?” and saw the blush raising to
her cheeks right from her neck and wondered if women blushed still!
No…I didn’t mean…er…for
“Then what did you mean? Can you do that?” He countered her suddenly.
She looked at him stricken and he was looking at her lips that were dried
up and were trembling in the nervous tension that was now spreading
across her body.
“Whhhat?” she asked nevertheless.
“Sleep with someone when you don’t feel a thing?” He asked and studied
her… “Excuse me!” She tried to avoid by looking scandalized which she
was actually.
“Tell me Khushi!” He said holding her wrist in a vice like grip.
“Sir you are hurting me.” She told him.
“That I always do. Don’t I? Now it’s the norm.” He said smiling at her
mirthlessly.
Khushi did not know what to say and said, “I am getting late.”
“Then don’t go!” Deepthimaan for the life of him didn’t know why he said
what he did.
She looked at him then, stricken and his heart melted at the look of
desperation in her eyes.
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 10
The man quietly moved in the shadows, and moved in. He looked around
and found the light in one cabin. There she was waiting for him like a
sitting duck. His lips turned in wry humour. How idiotic could women be! He
walked stealthily towards the far side cabin.
Khushi grew restless and she felt very odd. May be it was because she was
alone in a hitherto crowded place, her office she mused and she felt a
very odd sensation of being watched. It was not new to her. But it never
felt so odd before. She looked around. There was no movement
anywhere. As she turned she saw the latch turning. Blood drained from
her face. He was there! She immediately switched of the light and opened
the connecting door to the Director’s cabin and searched for the way out.
There was none but the door to the secretary lounge outside which was
parallel to the room that she came from. She flashed her card opening it
and peered out. None was there. There was a tell-tale sound of shuffling
feet in the room next. She bolted out locked the room and ran past the
other room locked it and ran towards the exit and heard someone
swearing and banging on the door.
That voice was not familiar. She thought as she ran and fell with a big thud
as her sari got entangled with the wheel of a swivel chair at a workstation.
She tried to free it. Blood trickled down her brow, and she tasted some on
her lips. That meant she hurt her forehead and her mouth suffered the
worst impact. Her lips ached. The door was now being banged open in
earnest, and suddenly the sound stopped.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 11
Either he gave up, or he opened the door! She thought trying her best to tear
her sari off to free herself.
Khushi Think! Think…She egged herself on… The man took aim and she
panicked.
Deepthimaan felt very odd. Where was she and why did he feel so odd…
He shook his head and then he heard her calling
out, “Maaaan! MAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNN… sit down… SIT! Please…”
The man fired and the shot missed and hit the side of the table saving
Deepthimaan.
Before he took aim again, she started running across, to the other wall,
shouting, “My yahaan hun… file meray pass hai.”
(I am here and the file is with me)
The man whatever he thought did not expect the lady to openly dare him.
He thought but only for a second and turned to Deepthimaan and aimed
again.
Khushi ran back taking advantage of the time lapse, and fell on
Deepthimaan pushing him to the carpeted floor and rolling with him,
when the shots were being fired by the thug.
What…the…hell… Deepthimaan looked at his cabin from where shots were
being fired as the thug thinking he was on an advantage came out into the
open and walked to them and brandished his weapon as Khushi covered
Deepthimaan lying on top of him and said, “Nai!” (No) covering him
completely with her body.
“Phile doh”
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 12
(Give me the file) he said gruffly looking around… the shots would have
been heard outside although muted. He had very little time.
“Kabhi nahee!” (Never!) She said pinning Deepthimaan further to the floor
and covering him completely with her body.
“Khushi! Let me handle it…” Deepthimaan’s pleas went on deaf ears as
Khushi said, “Nai Sir!” and threw the file away from them.
The man growled and removed the safety latch of his pistol and said,
“Tujhey tho…”
(You must be killed)
The man raised his gun to shoot…
She tried to nod and winced and he flinched saying, “Look at yourself!
Who asked you to go and get into trouble?”
“What?” Khushi thought he would congratulate her for saving such a topsecret
mission from crumbling. But here he was fuming away.
She did not know how to react. She smarted and he asked her, “Why is
that …” and looked away as a muscle throbbed in his temple she noticed,
and resumed saying, “Why is that whenever both of us come into contact
with each other, the end result is pain for you?”
And me! …he left the other part unsaid. As the eldest son in the Mehraana
clan and the heir apparent, he had always conducted himself with utmost
decorum and decency. He personally also did not believe in hurting
people. This woman was his end as every encounter with her somehow
inflicted pain on to her, and later on to him coz he was involved somehow.
It was weird!
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 13
This recurrence of the pattern of pain was inexplicable!
He snorted. And he ended up feeling somehow liable although he had
nothing to do with it even remotely. But it was always as if he was some
guardian of her in terms of her dosage of pain. And worst part is after the
pain he was supplier of the panacea mostly. It was really strange.
Khushi was trembling all over by the time she reached her room. What did
she do! She yelled at the Prince at his own place in front of his staff and
his mom! Oh NO! By any standards that was very rude. He must be
hopping mad and she imagined him in a pagdi and royal robe decreeing,
“Off with her head!”
A smile played on her lips as tears rolled down her eyes, and that’s how
Deepthimaan saw her when he barged into her room after a cursory
knock.
“Very good! Now you are enjoying the pain. New extra fresh this time!” He
said coldly making her to stand up and winced, as her body was still not
up to the mark. “Hum…” She stared but stalled as he said, “No go on… left
hand done! Left leg done! Head ok! Shoulder and head and left side just
completed. Today right hand…” It took a minute for Khushi to realize that
he was actually giving her the checklist of the injuries she sustained on
her body ever since they met. Coffee, dislocation of leg on the stairs, the
car episode on the rainy evening, the office…oh God!
Anything else left? He asked her so furiously that she looked around.
Anything to distract his attention and found a glass of water on the side
table and walked to it and held it saying, “Please calm down.” But as she
moved the carpet flipped and she lost her balance and stepped out of the
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 14
carpet and in the process, the glass fell on her right foot crashing into
pieces.
SurPal who was just outside barged in saying, “Kunwar kya hua…”
(What happened Prince?) and Khushi and Deepthimaan looked at each
other and Khushi was stricken and she saw his eyes and then she saw it!
His lips twitching at the corners with suppressed laughter, and she eased
up and they both broke down laughing much to Suri’s shock.
“Suri… tell her to call for a ceasefire yaar!” Deepthimaan said and at
SurPal’s confused face again Khushi and Deepthimaan burst out laughing,
as he shook his head in exasperation and walked out calling Lado to clean
up and muttering something about people making him go crazy.
At the farmhouse he had seen that she was very vulnerable when it came
to it. The tough exterior, which she sported, was a sham! It was for just
warding off people. Actually she was very vibrant from within and was full
of life. She was sort of alive when he caught her unawares. Just not alive
but was like a live wire! What did she do to curtail all that spirit! Where did she
keep it tucked away! Behind the soft spoken docile plain Jane, was the
fearless absolutely unstoppable force that he could clearly see!
He had another concern! His angle with her! He shook his head and
smiled self derisively! Since when was he thinking about all this! She was his
savior, so they took care of her in gratitude. That’s all, there was to it! But
why did he feel very odd when she said she wanted to leave.
For her security! A rational thought came from within. The file still was with
the Corporal and who ever it was, who wanted it would strike again.
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 15
Worse still she had said there were two people that day, who tried to
attack her. He personally had a hunch that it was Mukund Dhanjani who
orchestrated it, but was still on the hunt for evidence to frame him.
However, as the person who was the single reason for the entire plan to
fail, Khushi stood a very good chance of being the victim for any
retaliation that may be planned by the opponent.
Yes! She must be kept in safety for some time till the entire episode was
sorted out.
He called SurPal and briefly told him about his hunch, and asked him to
see to it that Khushi is never alone at the Corporal.
“Shhhhh!” She said with her index finger on her lips, which irritated him
further.
“You are asking me to shut up?” He could not talk further, as she closed
his mouth with her palm and in walked Mr. Avadhani, and froze in his
tracks, apologized and left and the opened door left Khushi and
Deepthimaan exposed to the secretarial lounge for a full thirty seconds,
before the elderly man closed the door.
Khushi froze and made to step back, but Deepthimaan wound his arm
round her waist saying, “Oh no! No woman does that to me and goes back
without a retaliation.”
“Sir…I…” she gulped hard as she herself didn’t know why she acted like
that! What was it with him that made her loose her cool and act like…act
like herself-the Khushi she was! She weakly realized. He made her loose
Goldenhaze Fiction
CHASING THE RAINBOW-2 16
her carefully concocted cool exterior and she did not know why that
happened.
The realization made her go absolutely slack and then she realized a new
feeling. The arm round her was scalding hot! It seared through her sari,
and she felt a tugging sensation, which was familiar, the moment she saw
his eyes up close narrowed and deep blue in anger right then.
She lowered her eyes and said, “Please!”
Deepthimaan who grabbed her in reflex action, realised a second late as
to what he had done.
He never was so overwhelmed by any woman! Not even in throws of passion!
He never lost his cool. No woman made him loose his head like this one. What
was it with her that made him forget the fact that he was at his office and
anyone walking in could see them!
He looked at her and his arm round her waist tightened inadvertently, and
she panicked and went cold.
Jo hum rukay ek jagah!
Unhay yaad karnay lagey jiska chal gaya humaarey dil pay jaadu
Jinsay hui hai mohabbat humaaree aagah
Who humay chod aisay hee chaldiye beparwaah
Hum doondthey aagaye unhay dar badar
Aisay bhi humey na tadpaao beinthehaa
Ki hum sochey humaara pyar ka rang chadaa per bay asar…
Where is my heart for it’s not under my control
It flutters reminiscing in the memories of her, who holds it in captivity!
The love of my love left me without a care!
As I wander for a glimpse of her here and there!
Don’t test me to an extent
Where I might doubt the candor of my love…
“Yash! YASH!” Khushi stopped him. He smiled and said ma’am,
Bus aapko dekhthey hee shaayari hojaathi hai humay jaisay bukhaar…
Ab yeh tum jaanon ki yeh dil ki tadap hai ya uski pukar!
Just by looking at you, verses roll down by me;
Now is this the anguish of my heart or it’s yearning, you tell me!
Mouth kay muh say nikla jo main
Zindagi say lad baitha hun.
Mar kay bhi zinda raha hun main
Sirf tumharey liye jee raha hun
Joojh kay har pal say ghar aaya sab say kinara
Zamana badal gaya magar my rah gaya tumhara
Kaun kehthaa hai waqth ka takaaza hai yeh?
Meri kismet banee meri dushman
Pal pal mynay lee jiskay naam say saansey
Woh banee kisi aur ki dulhan
As I dared death and emerged,
I fight my battle with life…
I am still alive after death
Coz I live for you alone!
Wrestling with every second of my life I came back home to you
The whole world changed but I remained only yours!
Who says its all the tricks of time?
For my destiny became my worst foe
In whose name I took every single breath of mine,
She stands before me, but as some one elses bride!
WOH khadi thi oonchi aatari pay ek jhalak jo dekha mynay
Iss kadar dil legayee unki adaa mano zindagi meri khadi thi meray
saamnay
Khushi closed her eyes. She could tll from the voice he was in pain.
Nigaahein bichaayi thi mynay unn kay kadmom mein
Shaan sein uthri thi who humaarey palkon mein
Dur say dekha bus unhay aur unkay milan ki lagee aisi lagi
Kay hum baawrey huvey aisay kay aankh humaari tab say hai nahee lagi
She was standing high on a turret, and one glimpse that I had of her,
I was floored by her, for I felt it was my life that stood before me…
I pledged my life at her feet!
As she filled my eyes, and my heart with the pride of her love,
Ever since is my yearning for a meet with my beloved!
Sleep evades me ever since, as I wait for her to glance my way…
Ek baar mud kay dekho tho kya jaaye tera
Thu chaahey tho jaan nikaal kay rakhdun qadmon mein tera
Thu samajh na saki deewangi meri ei jaan
Per my tumhay apna banakey rahunga yeh bath meri maan
Thu agar mud kay na dekhi mujhey abhi
Tho jaan dedunga phir na milunga kabhi
What would you loose if you spare a glance this way?
My life I shall give up at your feet if only you turn back
I shall make you mine! Get that right,
Turn back and look at me
For if you don’t I shall give up my life
Lo ab intezaar ki ghadi khatm hui
Who aayegi abhi aur kahegi bath ankahi
Meri nigaahein raah taqthi hai uskay deedaar ki
Mera dil bechain hai us kay liye
Baahon mein bharloon usay ek baar…mynay yeh dua maangi
Iss behjaan si zindagi mein jaan aye!
Jo meri zindagi mein who aajaaye
There ends my long wait unbidden,
She would come and say the words that were never spoken;
My eyes wait for her to grace them with her countenance,
While my heart yearns for her presence!
I asked destiny for just a chance to hold her in my arms
If only she stepped into my lonely existence
To fill this emptiness within me with her wonderful essence
