John’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone welcome to Woodstock Park
Our visitors this afternoon are Tooting and Mitcham. They have had an excellent start to the
season and will be formidable opponents today. Welcome to their players officials and supporters
and we hope they enjoy their short stay with us.
Since our last programme we have disappointingly gone out of the Buildbase FA trophy. What
was particularly disappointing was that we totally commanded the first half against a team who
are riding high in their league ( Ryman North ). After hitting the bar and the post twice in the first
20 minutes I fully expected us to go on and win the tie quite comfortably, however, Bury Town
had different ideas. They got a goal with their first attack of the game ( totally against the run of
play). The second half was a different story. None of the promise of the first half was fulfilled
and a late second half goal sealed our fate and Bury went back to Suffolk £2500 better off after
a smash and grab win.
Last Saturday we visited Molesey and came away with a 1-1 draw. Our goal was scored by Jordan
Gallacher. Missing in this match was Miles Cornwell who has signed for Folkestone Invicta.
That is twice now Folkestone have taken our leading goalscorer this season. The first, of course
was Harry Smith who has now signed for Millwall. With Harry we got a small payment when he
moved to Millwall. Miles was not a contracted player so we had no choice but to let him go. We
would not have stood in his way anyway as it was a team from a higher league that came in for
him even if we could. Miles was offered a deal that we could not match. We wish Miles good
luck at Folkestone. He was a model player for us and would be welcome back any time if it
does not work out at Folkestone.
Tuesday night it was a visit to Three Bridges. A very entertaining end to end game deserved
more spectators than was there. After enduring the Liverpool V Manchester United match on
Sunday I couldn’t help thinking that this match was far more entertaining. Three Bridges belied
their lowly position and made a real game of it. Both goalkeepers were in great form and it took
a late headed goal from Tom Carlse to settle it.
Nick has signed a midfield player who has been playing for Corinthian in the SECL. He is also
registered for Chatham Town who have now released his Ryman registration. Welcome to Joe
Loft. We hope he enjoys his time with us.
Well done to Mel Naylor and Christine Lowe for their interview with Pete Flynn on SFM with on
Tuesday afternoon. Their passion for the club really came over. Most Fridays at or around mid
day I can be heard on BRFM chatting to Peter Finch about the Brickies. KMTV have started a
regular sports programme called “Team Talk” Peter and I were featured on the programme that
aired on Monday 10th October. KMTV can be found on the internet at www.kentonline.co.uk/
kmtv. My wife says I have “the perfect face for radio” which is a bit hurtful!
From the Programme Editor
First of all I want to thank Mel and Chris for the grand job that they did talking on SFM radio to
Pete Flynn about the club and particularly the reforming of the supporters club. I thought they
did an excellent job, well done. The fantastic Woodstock chef, Phil was also on SFM that same
day talking about all things culinary, so all in all a great advert for Woodstock.
SFM gives us lots of publicity and so a big thank you to them.
I thought I would offer some news snippets from around the world for this programme starting
with news from Ghana! Apparently top flight football in Ghana is suffering because players are
indulging in too much loving, says a former boss of the national side.
Mark Jibar believes players are too tired to perform on the pitch due to the extra time spent in
the bedroom! “A lot of today’s players cannot play 90 minutes because they get so tired easily”
said Jibar. “And you know why? Because they
don’t sleep enough and don’t train enough and
they engage in too much sex. “There are beautiful
girls in Ghana and they wont leave them alone!!”
When Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo was
sacked by Aston Villa Villa became embroiled in a
twitter spat with Virgin trains after a cheeky dig at
them.
Virgin Tweeted a picture of an empty carriage
along with the message “The next batch of potential
#AVFC managers have just left for Birmingham
New Street…”
Villas reply was cutting. “Would our managerial
candidates actually get here for interviews on time
if they arrived via @VirginTrains?” Virgin hit back
insisting they had more trains on time in the past
year than Villa had managed victories, before the
club listed all the trophies they’ve won and urged
the train line to ”get back in your quiet coach, “ 1-0
to the Villa? Virgin have now offered to settle things
out on the pitch, surely a game even Villa can’t
lose!! (Editors note: I like Virgin Trains ever since I
was able to buy a First Class ticket for £33 from
Rainham to Liverpool Lime Street for a trip in November!)
Now news from Argentina. A club has ben told to
rebuild their home ground after Google maps
showed the pitch was the wrong shape.
The Argentine Football association has closed down the Juan Antonio Arias stadium in the city
of San Justo as the grass did not form a rectangle!
Finally I have heard from Grant Wilbur who is now very involved with Hawkinge Town. He tells
me that he spotted some of our old players Brad Ashmore and Toby Ashmore playing for Deal
Community Sports and also Brett Smith, Richard Sinden, Adam Douglas and Charlie Belcher all
playing for Kings Hill.
The History of Tooting & Mitcham Utd
Tooting & Mitcham F.C. was formed in 1932 when two local clubs, Tooting Town and Mitcham
Wanderers, amalgamated. The merged club remained in the London League until joining the
Athenian League in 1937. In 1938 the Surrey Senior Cup was won for the first time, the team
beating Dulwich Hamlet 2-1. Wartime then brought a mixture of friendly matches and a league
called the South East Combination. The London Senior Cup was won in 1943 when Dulwich
Hamlet were defeated 5-4.
When the Second World War ended the club returned to the Athenian League and were
Champions in 1950 and 1955. They also reached the F.A. Cup First Round Proper for the first
time in 1948 unluckily losing by 1-0 at Millwall and in 1950 reached the First Round Proper
again with their first ever home tie against Football League opposition Brighton & Hove Albion,
losing 3-2. Originally playing in white shirts, today's broad black and white stripes, the original
colours of Tooting Town FC, were adopted in 1956 to coincide with the club’s election to the
Isthmian League.
That season saw the club reach the F.A. Cup Second Round Proper losing to Queens Park
Rangers. In the 1957-58 season they were crowned Isthmian League Champions but the club
was hit by tragedy when star goalkeeper Dave Moore was killed in a car crash soon after the
title was won. In season 1958-59 the club reached the 3 rd round proper of the F.A. Cup for the
first time in its history beating Football League Clubs Bournemouth and Northampton Town. In
the third round they were drawn at home to Nottingham Forest, one of the top clubs in the
country, and led the First Division side 2-0 at half-time but an own goal and a very controversial
penalty for handball enabled Forest to scramble a draw. In the replay, played before a
crowd of 42,362, the Midlands side won 3-0 and they went on to lift the F.A. Cup at Wembley.
The 1959-60 campaign was one of the best in the club’s history. The Isthmian League Championship
was won for the second time and the Terrors reached four Cup-Finals, winning two
the London Senior and Surrey Senior Cups. Striker Paddy Hasty played for the Great Britain
Olympic team in the 1960 summer Olympics and was the last player to score a goal for Team
GB until 2012. Tooting & Mitcham were the first amateur side to reach the London Challenge
Cup for over 30 years losing 2-1 to Chelsea in the Final at Stamford Bridge.
In March 1962 the club switched on their brand new floodlights against Arsenal. The following
season the Club had a record 11-0 win over Welton Rovers in the Amateur Cup, the Tooting
team containing several England Amateur Internationals. The side's young goalkeeper, Alex
Stepney, was a local lad who had come through the Tooting ranks and at the end of the 1962-
63 campaign went on to join Millwall, Manchester United and the full England side against
Sweden. Dario Gradi, who had an illustrious career as manager of Crewe Alexandra also
played for the Terrors in the early 1960’s.
The 1974-75 season saw Tooting reach the F.A. Cup first round proper and lost narrowly 2-1
in front of a 10,000 plus crowd at Sandy Lane. The following season the club under the guidance
of Roy Dwight had their best ever run in the F.A. Cup, reaching the 4 th round proper
where they lost 3-1 to Bradford. The club also had their best ever run in the F.A. Trophy losing
in the quarter-final’s away to the eventual winners Scarborough 1-0.
The club won the Surrey Senior Cup three seasons on the trot in 1976, 1977 and 1978.thus
being the first club to achieve this. In the 1988-89 campaign the club were relegated for the
first time in its history.

The History of Tooting & Mitcham Utd
Continued
The 1996-97 term saw relegation to the Second Division. The 2000-1 campaign was better
with the 6 th round of the F.A. Vase reached and under the guidance of Keith Boanas and Ian
Hazel the Ryman League Division Two Championship was won.
The club moved into its new home at Imperial Fields for the start of the 2002-03 season. After
going close to promotion in 2005-06, losing to Tonbridge in the Play-offs, manager Richard
Cadette was replaced by the hugely experienced Billy Smith (who was skipper of Tooting's
1975-76 F.A. Cup side) and George Wakeling. In Billy and George's first season the Club won
both the London Senior Cup and the Surrey Senior Cup and a fantastic unbeaten league run
saw the club reach the Play-off Final losing to Hastings United 2-0. The Play-off Finals were
reached again in 2007-8 this time a Paul Vines goal secured promotion. The London Senior
Cup was also retained. At this time the club also produced a superstar by the name of Michail
Antonio who came through the ranks and signed for Reading, and has subsequently starred in
the Championship for Nottingham Forest. In 2009-10 the club reached the First Round Proper
of the F.A. Cup again going down to Stockport County 5-0.
Billy and George left the club and Mark Beard was appointed manager in May 2010. Beard
was relieved of his position in December 2011 and former West Ham player Kenny Brown was
appointed the new manager. However, Tooting were relegated at the end of the 2011–12 season.
Three more managers followed (Roberto Forzoni, Jamie Martin and Phil Simpson) but all
were unable to turn the clubs fortunes round. Craig Tanner took over in the summer of 2013
at the age of 27 assisted by Adam Moriarty. 11th position was reached in their first two seasons.
New manager Frank Wilson and assistant Mark Hams took over for the 2015-16 season, and
the team finished in 17th place in the league table.
Buildbase FA Trophy
Sittingbourne 0 Bury Town 2 Att 150
Well, I don’t think I’ve seen a match of two
halves quite as contrasting as this.
Sittingbourne dominated the first half and Bury
Town the second.
Trouble is, Sittingbourne didn’t convert their
chances when they were so much on top, and
that’s why they went out of the FA Trophy at the
first hurdle.
They truly outplayed Bury for 45 minutes and it
wasn’t until after the break that you could see
what a good side the Suffolk team was, and
why they’re second in Ryman League North
and haven’t lost an away game this season.
Sittingbourne made two changes from the team
that lost at East Grinstead the previous Saturday
with fit-again Simon Overland returning in
goal for Ben Bridle-Card, who has switched to
Faversham, and Jordan Gallacher back from
suspension and replacing Hicham Akhazzan.
In front of their biggest home crowd since August,
Sittingbourne stormed into the game and
Dan Rumbol thumped a sixth minute header
against the bar from Conrad Lee’s corner and
then twice went close to scoring when the next
corner swung in.
With Stefan Wright energetically bursting forward
from midfield, Sittingbourne pressed on
and after Gallacher put a good chance wide,
Miles Cornwell missed a great opportunity when
he got clear only to drive his shot against the
foot of the post.
A spate of corners, some good attacking
moves, and the woodwork struck twice all in the
first 15 minutes. How Sittingbourne would go on
to regret not turning their superiority into goals –
though without being clever after the event, you
somehow sensed that even at the time.
Extraordinarily, Bury took the lead midway
through the first half from what was their first
attack. And it wasn’t even an attack – just a
long throw, even longer than Jack Steventon
can do it – into the box and headed on by a giant
centre-half for Canfer to score easily at the
far post.
Back came Sittingbourne, undeterred, and
Wright headed into the keeper’s arms from a
good position, Gallacher forced the keeper into
a good save, and Jono Richardson had his
close range shot blocked following yet another
dangerous corner into the box.
Surely, the second half would produce more of
the same and Sittingbourne would eventually
get the equaliser they clearly deserved, at the
very least.
But that couldn’t have been further from the
truth as Bury put an iron grip on the game right
from the start of the second half, with Overland
straightaway called on to make two excellent
diving saves when all the first half he’d been a
virtual spectator.
In what was only a rare Sittingbourne attack,
Cornwell had a good chance to pull it back but
he tried to put too much power into his shot and
it soared over the bar.
Bury had some good players but their domination
was all about forcing set pieces – corners,
free-kicks and especially throw-ins which they’d
fire into the six-yard from miles out.
But it was a free-kick that gave them their second
clinching goal, and even though it was almost
right out by the corner flag, Barber sent it
immaculately straight in to the far top corner.
Worse followed for Sittingbourne with their first
red card of the season – harshly shown to Steventon
for what looked an honest, though conceivably
mistimed, challenge.
The referee had previously shown leniency to
Bury players for blocking a keeper’s quick clearance
and kicking the ball away after the whistle
had gone, but showed none at all here for a
teenager committing his first foul of the game
after 80 minutes.
That’s both major cup competitions Sittingbourne
have gone out of now at the first attempt,
having been drawn rather unluckily
against more than decent teams both times.
Their season has gone a bit awry in the last
couple of weeks, but they have to take consolation
from the way they played in the first half
and must have scared the living daylights out of
their opponents before ending up with nothing
to show for it.
Sittingbourne: Simon Overland, Tom Brunt
(Hicham Akhazzan, 77 min), Conrad Lee, Danny
Rumbol, Jono Richardson, Jack Steventon
(Red card), Ricky Gundry (Josh Wisson, 66
min), Stefan Wright, Jordan Gallacher, Miles
Cornwell, Tom Carlse (Steven Ita, 69 min).

Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 15th October 2016
Ryman League Div 1 South
Molesey 1 Sittingbourne 1 Att 93
This was a reassuring performance by Sittingbourne
as they battled and scrapped for a
point that was the very least they deserved.
Reassuring because they were missing key
players, but but also because they were away
to a team who have a very strong home record,
and in addition they haven’t had very good results
lately.
Another defeat and they would have been slipping
further down the table after starting the
season so brightly.
But a makeshift team dug deep and proved
there’s plenty of optimism for the season still to
come, especially if they play as well and as determinedly
as this.
Sittingbourne were without their two main stalwarts
who hadn’t previously missed a game this
season. Captain and key defender Jono Richardson
was unavailable through work commitments,
and top scorer Miles Cornwell has gone
up a division to Folkestone – and he scored for
them on his debut! Also missing was strong
midfielder Jack Steventon, suspended for getting
sent off the previous Saturday in the FA
Trophy.
Back came Dan Tanner and fit-again Steven
Ita, with Tom Brunt – the stand-in captain –
switched to midfield to allow Sam Welch to return
at right-back.
Sittingbourne started well in the Surrey sunshine
and both central defenders, Danny Rumbol
and Tanner, headed wide from early chances.
They thought they’d taken the lead through
Hicham Akhazzan after 11 minutes but he was
flagged offside – even though fans who were
nearer the decision than I was reckoned that
was the wrong call.
With Sittingbourne pressing forward, Molesey
caught them on the break on 18 minutes and a
good build-up down the left ended with Samuels
shooting home from the edge of the area.
Sittingbourne fought back well with Ita looking
something like back to his exciting best of last
season, Stefan Wright bursting forward from
midfield, and Tom Carlse and Conrad Lee combining
well to attack down the left.
Jordan Gallacher shot over after being forced
wide and then brought out a brilliant save from
the keeper as he latched on to Ita’s pass.
At the other end Molesey put together a move
that was a carbon copy of their goal but Simon
Overland saved well.
A decent enough first half was followed by an
exciting, sometimes dramatic and often controversial
second half, with Sittingbourne mainly
on top and driving forward but Molesey dangerous
in counter-attacks.
The Brickies equalised 12 minutes into the half
when Carlse drove the ball in from the left,
Akhazzan snatched at his shot and the ball was
blocked to Gallacher who smashed it gleefully
home from close range.
Molesey protested long and hard for offside, but
a good moan wasn’t entirely out of character for
them all afternoon.
At one end Welch made a brilliant saving tackle
when a Molesey forward raced clear but mainly
it was Sittingbourne pushing on.
They were mysteriously refused a penalty when
sub Ricky Gundry was blatantly pushed over
from behind, and as temperatures rose they
were drawn into a couple of minor scuffles with
the referee struggling to maintain his control.
Lee was just inches away from clinching a glorious
winner, racing from his own area all the
way down the pitch only to take a slightly too
heavy touch as he closed in on goal.
In the final few minutes it was exhilaratingly all
Sittingbourne, with Gundry and Carlse having
fierce shots blocked by a packed defence, and
then sub Josh Wisson timing his header beautifully
from 10 yards only to see the home keeper
make an excellent tip-over in response.
Honours even and for Sittingbourne a wellearned
point after defeats in their last couple of
away league games.
Sittingbourne: Simon Overland, Sam Welch,
Conrad Lee, Danny Rumbol, Dan Tanner, Tom
Brunt, Hicham Akhazzan (Ricky Gundry, 66
min), Stefan Wright, Jordan Gallacher, Steven
Ita (Josh Wisson, 77 min), Tom Carlse.

WORK HARD. PLAY HARDER.
SO, Danny Murphy believes the solution to the firing frenzy that continues to blight the game is
to introduce a managerial sacking race.
It’s a nice idea from the former Liverpool and England man – and made with the best intentions -
but isn’t there a danger that subjecting clubs, and of course managers, to a timeframe in which
to do their housekeeping, may simply delay any inevitable parting of ways, thus potentially inciting
boardroom resentment?
Murphy, in his piece with The Non-League Paper in our October 9 edition, highlights a season at
Blackburn Rovers when he played under five managers! That, of course, is utterly ridiculous, but
it is a situation which, sadly, is becoming more believable by the year.
Take the National League for example. At the time of writing this, no fewer than SIX managers
from Non-League top table had parted company with their clubs with several more affected lower
down the pyramid.
But with on-field frustration comes pressure and boardroom tension and that is where keeping
chairmen and managers together against their will can have a negative effect. I mean, would
fans of Derby County really wanted Nigel Pearson and Mel Morris in cahoots running their club
with their relationship clearly at breaking point?
And let’s face it too Danny, managers aren’t exactly whiter than white themselves. They too
would jump ship if a bigger and better job came along – and often when it is least expected.
George Graham or Harry Redknapp anyone?
If there really is a problem with loyalty in football, then the danger is that come January 1 (or
whenever the managers window opened), a free-for-all of illegal approaches and underhand tactics
to force a parting of the ways could leave an even more bitter taste in the mouth.
It’s not just managers that need protecting, it’s football clubs as a whole.
Murphy says: “What a sacking window would give is real stability, it all allow players to know
what’s going on and it will also ensure managers get the time they need to make a success of
themselves.
“We can’t go on having two or three people losing their jobs every week. I don’t see who that
benefits.”
I don’t think anyone will argue with Danny there but in these days where football clubs are run as
businesses a more thoughtful and realistic approach is required to provide both parties with the
security and flexibility they need.
