BREWERY OPENS
Well that’s a dumb question.
The taproom is the second location for the growing
Jacksonville based brewery.
Route 90 Rye, Old Battle Axe IPA and the Nut Sack
Double Brown Ale all are part of Engine 15’s popular list
of brews.
BOOZE, BROS & BALL
at the WORLD’S LARGEST
OUTDOOR COCKTAIL PARTY
Jack
Florida vs. Georgia.
Gainesville vs. Athens.
These great teams
from these great cities
began playing in Jacksonville
in 1933 (with two exceptions).
Now featuring two of the
most prominent Southeastern
Conference rivals, this matchup has
become one of the biggest games
in college football – and it all takes
place on Jacksonville’s home turf:
EverBank Field. Known as the
World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail
Party, the annual tailgating, game
and aftermath puts our Downtown
and surrounding neighborhoods in
the center of it all.
Yes, this has become much
more than a game; it’s a longstanding
neutral-site rivalry
in which Georgia holds a
commanding 50–42–2 series
record. But Florida has won the last
two meetings.
Florida and Georgia have
relatively new head coaches (Jim
McElwain and Kirby Smart,
respectively) roaming the sidelines,
with names for the ages like Steve
Spurrier and Vince Dooley fondly
relegated to the pages of history.
The spectacle this college
rivalry has become showcases
Jacksonville to 127,000 annual
visitors. It fills 35,000 hotel room
nights and attracts 5 million TV
viewers. Oh, and the city’s and
schools’ coffers benefit greatly, too.
Of course, there will be booze
and bros galore, so Jack asked a
few locals about what to really
expect before and after the 2016
game.

Alcohol
It goes without saying that
tailgating in general — especially
at the World’s Largest Outdoor
Cocktail Party — will result
in extreme drunkenness and
inebriated shenanigans. Amanda,
an ER nurse at a Downtown
hospital, briefly yet effectively
states the drawbacks:
“Sooooooooo many overdoses,
alcohol intoxications and assaults,”
she cautioned.
Sean, a bartender at Garage,
adds that the result typically
depends on the age of the drinkers:
“Younger college students tend to
get out of control,” he says.
Josh, a bartender at Kickbacks
who has lived in the area for about
10 years, is torn: “It’s 50/50. I love
the happy drunks. But nobody
loves the angry drunks and the ones
you have to carry out.”
Money
Jacksonville Mayor Lenny
Curry, at the time a new fiveyear
agreement was announced
to keep the game in Jacksonville
through 2021, took note of the fans’
spending habits as well as the local
sales and bed taxes.
With such an influx of people,
the city and local businesses make
a pretty penny ($35 million last
year and a five-year average of
$30.7 million) from all these fans
— including the inebriated ones.
Josh says he loves the event —
especially as a bartender. “Dozens
of college kids are willing to cough
up money,” he explains. It’s a
good weekend to be in the serving
business.
Sean goes on to say that King
Street District doesn’t really get
busy until after the game: “They
usually stay Downtown,” he says.
“It’s good when Georgia wins
because the fans stay longer.”
Regardless, since the game
takes place the same weekend as
Halloween, they always can count
on having a pretty good crowd.
So who’s really more
annoying?
With enough alcohol and
bragging rights, either side can get
pretty irritating. And it seems that
these locals aren’t exactly objective
(who can blame them?):
But Sean says he prefers
Georgia fans (but he’s a Bulldogs
guy).
Zack, a South Carolina fan
who’s lived in the area for about
a year, quickly says, “Georgia.
Because I don’t like them.”
Other takeaways
Tailgating, cheering and
partying will commence as
usual, but in a concentric circle
that reaches hundreds of miles
north and south there will be
people going about the task of
resurrecting their lives in the
wake of Hurricane Matthew, an
unwanted walk-on that has just
wrecked havoc upon the First
Coast.
You probably can expect an
obnoxiously high increase on Uber
rates, people clambering into cars
heading to and fro — and , of
course, intense camaraderie.
GET SUPER BLOODY
(MARYS) THIS HALLOWEEN
BY MATT PITTMAN
jack
Halloween is almost here so it’s time to get Bloody. And Jack is highlighting
the best Bloody Mary’s in the Cultural Core.
This brunch cocktail can be fixed in a number of ways. Some like it spicy,
and some picture their Bloody Mary as a meal. Bacon, cheese, olives, okra,
shrimp, and more bacon are some of the most popular accessories.
While it may be easy to combine a shot of vodka and Zing Zang Bloody
Mary Mix, lets get creative here people.
Orsay Bloody Mary,
Version 2.5 ($8)
As one of the most upscale restaurants
in the Core, Orsay puts the craft into
this craft cocktail. Russian Standard
vodka, tomato puree, vegetable juices,
horseradish, Lea & Perrins, Sambal Oelek,
Maggi, red wine reduction, Glace de
Viande, fresh lemon juice, and The Bitter
Truth celery bitters. Sounds fancy, is fancy,
and it tastes amazing.
It’s no surprise that Black Sheep
makes an appearance on this list given
that cocktails are its specialty. Giving
the options for vodka or gin, they add in
house-made bloody mary mix, pickled
okra, cheese curd and an olive.
Did someone ask for a little extra kick?
While some are easy to sip on, let the
Spicy Habanero Bloody Mary take your
breath away. It’s sure to leave your lips
tingling.
Bacon Bloody Mary ($10)
Would you care for any vodka with
your bacon? If the answer is yes, its b.b.’s
to the rescue. Start with house infused
bacon vodka. The rest is simple — Bacon!
Bacon!! And more Bacon!!!
Bloody Mary ($11)
Sorry, there’s no bacon inside this
Bloody Mary, but it is full of electrolytes,
which has to count for something. Tito’s
vodka, a house-made bloody mary mix,
electrolyte filled and vegan friendly. If
bacon is really that important to you, a side
of Cherrywood Smoked Bacon only costs
$6.
Community Couriers
of Jacksonville
THE CORE’S
NEWEST BIKING
BRIGADE PEDDLES
TO PLEASE YOU
BY COURTNEY CLARK
jack
In 2013, Ben Wilson was looking for a way to combine his passion
for cycling and his vast experience in the grocery business into a service
for local residents and businesses. The result — Community Couriers of
Jacksonville (CCJ) — is where bicycling meets restaurant and grocery
delivery.
Serving the Cultural Core of Jacksonville, CCJ is easy to use:
1. Customers submit an order via text, email, or the website from a
restaurant or grocery store in the area.
2. Couriers retrieve the items and deliver them.
3. Customers reimburse the costs of the products they order and
pay a modest delivery fee.
Need a cup of coffee to get through the day? No order is too small.
Did you just get dumped and want to wallow in tearful misery? Order
a bottle of wine to have delivered straight to you.
Want to order in lunch for an office birthday party? No problem. This
bicycle brigade has your back.
Wilson took a few moments to stop peddling and delve deeper into
his venture.
Courtney Clark: Why does the
Core need CCJ?
Ben Wilson: We feel we are a
valuable resource to many small
businesses in the historic districts
because we provide them with
a delivery option that they may
not afford otherwise. They do not
have the overhead of an additional
employee strictly for deliveries,
nor do they have to lose valuable
floor staff by sending them out of
the store
CC: What does a typical day look
like for one of the couriers?
BW: We run 10am-10pm
seven days a week and have
regulars who use the service
every morning for coffee and
such. Sometimes there’s a
neighborhood restaurant that may
require some missing ingredient.
By 11:30am lunch orders start
rolling in and the jobs get
dispersed to the nearest courier.
After the lunch rush we team up
to knock out shopping orders. By
about 5:30pm the dinner orders
start coming in and that goes until
closing time.
CC: How has the feedback been
since you began?
BW: We have been generally well
received by the community. We
have a pretty solid set up — Yelp
and Google reviews (4 out of 5
stars on both sites), and social
media has been good to us. We got
a lot of attention right off the bat,
but realistically it took about 18
months to actually start utilizing
the service. However, it has really
taken off since then.
CC: What’s the weirdest order
you’ve received?
BW: A single eyeliner pencil to a
beauty pageant contestant. There
was clearly some urgency for a
specific product and we were able
to deliver it in a timely manner.
CC: What’s one thing you’d like
to say to your customers?
BW: Thank you! That’s what I
would like to say to our customers
and our community!
Hands down, the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is the
single greatest football tailgate in the country, and there’s no better
way to experience that then exploring RV CITY.
Located just outside of EverBank Field in Lot E in the Sports
Complex area, RV City is home of the most rabid football fans. Both
Florida and Georgia fans stack the lot days in advance, tailgating all
the way through Saturday.
Alligator Alley, decked out golf carts, and some huge inflatables
are just few of the things spotted each year.
It’s a site that every football and tailgating fan really has to
experience at least once.
BY JACQUELINE PERSANDI
Around here the annual Florida-Georgia game is a holiday. Not an
exchange-gifts-and-spend-quality-time-with-the-family holiday, but a getdrunk-three-days-in-a-row-and-wake-up-in-a-bathroom
holiday.
And on this holiday, no matter where you celebrate, you’re sure to find
three things: football, beer and live music. So, Georgia fans grab your
cowboy boots and Gator fans grab your Crocs, because we’re giving you a
look at the performers playing live during the long weekend.
Jon Langston
There’s just something about
Country music and football. No
one knows this better than Georgia
native Jon Langston. This singer
earned a Division I scholarship
to play football at Gardner-Webb
University in North Carolina in
2009, but traded in his pads for a
guitar a few years later. Now, he
delivers high-energy Pop Country
performances that are perfect for a
crowd that’s ready to party.
Thursday, Oct 27: 6pm at Mavericks Live
Jimmy Parrish &
The Waves
Considered “Trop Rock,”
Jimmy Parrish and The Waves is
Jimmy Buffet meets Jacksonville.
The group first hit the stage in
Jacksonville Beach at the Seawalk
Pavilion in 2000. Now, the band is
one of the most-requested headline
acts in the country when it comes
to major Parrot Head functions.
Thursday, Oct 27: 7pm–11pm at RV City
Ghostwitch
Originally the solo endeavor of
Ryan Gunwitch-Black, Ghostwitch
mixes classic Country with Blues
and Punk-Rock. The Jacksonvillebased
group has grown into a full
band with a wave of mutilation.
Thursday, Oct 27: 8pm at Jack Rabbits Live
DJ Kevin Tos,
DJ Patrick Harlow,
DJ Davin Hydro
These guys are part of Party
Solution Entertainment, a fullservice
DJ and Entertainment
company. Tos, Harlow and Hydro
mix tracks from all genres,
including Oldies, Rock, Disco,
Country, Top 40, Hip-Hop and
House. Tos describes his taste
in music as “any” and “all.” His
motto is: “Music is like pizza, it’s
never bad.”
J Collins
He’s a little bit Country and a
little bit Rock ‘n Roll. So it’s no
surprise that Jacksonville-based
performer J Collins has a Country
Rock sound with lyrics that pay
homage to the American workingclass
hero. If you’re looking for
someone the whole family can
sway to — Collins is your man.
The Avett Brothers
The lively music of The Avett
Brothers can best be described as
Folk Rock. If you’re into banjos
and everything Indie, you’ll swoon
for these four guys. Only two
members — Seth and Scott Avett,
who both sing lead and backup
vocals accompanied by plating
lots of instruments — are actually
blood brothers. The other two
permanent band members, Bob
Crawford and Joe Kwon, blend a
host of musical talents to give the
band an Indie-Bluegrass mixed
with Country-Pop vibe.
Austin Park
Hankerin’ for more Country?
Lucky you! Local band Austin
performance with a modern
Pop County Rock sound. If
you’re from Jacksonville,
you’ve probably seen singer
and songwriter Jeff Congo, and
drummer Tim Crawford, around
town. Since 2005, this band has
been a regular on local stages.
Jacksonville’s restaurant culture is an ever-evolving affair.
As older spots plateau and fade, new places come on strong,
meaning there’s never a shortage of exciting places to explore.
Here is one our favorite spots.
« LOLA’S BURRITO & BURGER JOINT
You don’t have to be a fan of the Florida Gators to enjoy eating one.
Trust us, Georgia fans.
You can try it for yourself at LOLA’S BURRITO & BURGER
JOINT. Along with the tacos, burritos, and burgers, Lola’s offers seven
“Tijuana 2-Steppers, better known as very special grilled burritos. The
Leapin’ Lizard burrito is fresh Cajun gator, Lola’s rice, black beans,
cabbage, diced tomatoes and cheese; all served with a Cajun Ranch
Sauce.
Even though you probably won’t be on the field as the Dawgs take
on the Gators, at least there is a way for you to down a gator yourself —
without the usual danger.
GREAT FLAVORS ON
THE MENU AT BAY
STREET BAR & GRILL
BY ANTHONY NEWKIRK, JR.
jack
When it comes to sports, we all
have our traditions; whether it’s
the team we root for, the jerseys
we wear or the food we eat. When
the big game is on, especially if
our favorite team is winning, we
just let it all go and indulge in the
good times.
With this year’s Florida-
Georgia game right around the
corner, you probably will be
looking for a good place to enjoy
the good times and this historic
rivalry. If so, then head Downtown
to Bay Street Bar & Grill. Located
just a stone’s throw from the
sporting district, Bay Street
showcases a truly diverse menu.
We’ve all been to places that
focus more on the bar side of the
restaurant and the kitchen gets left
behind. At Bay Street, owner Alva
Richreek, who is the head chef,
takes pride in putting out dishes
that showcase plenty of great
flavors. Chef Alva makes sure to
keep things fresh and new. Whether
it’s with daily dinner and dessert
specials, you almost always seem
to find something new.
Popular game-time dishes
are a natural. If you want wings
and burgers, Bay Street has you
covered. Or enjoy the jumbo
wings, which can be tossed in
any of their house-made signature
sauces. A couple of popular flavors
are Sriracha Ranch and the Hot &
Sweet Asian.
The burgers here are a full
half pound Nebraska Angus beef,
cooked any way you like. If you’re
a fan of onion rings, the folks at
Bay Street prepare thick-sliced
beer-battered ones that you’ll
absolutely enjoy.
Popular appetizers include
Corn Nuggets and Macaroni &
Cheese Bites, both served with
Sriracha Ranch.
If your tastes veer off in other
directions, there are plenty of
salads, sandwiches and flatbreads
from which to choose. Local
beers are on tap, including those
from Intuition Ale and Engine 15,
so you definitely won’t go thirsty.
Another great thing about Bay
Street is the late-night hours. When
the game is finally over — win or
lose — the party just keeps going.
If you can’t make it to
EverBank Field, do yourself a
favor and head west to Bay Street
Bar & Grill. It’s a great place
to enjoy some good food, good
company and that local beer you
crave or the one that you’ve been
meaning to try.
wouldn’t you want to taste it?”
10 THINGS YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
DOCTOR STRANGE
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen,
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Stuhlbarg, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong
1Dr. Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon, loses the use of
his gifted hands after a car accident. Desperation leads
him to The Ancient One, supernatural guardian of Earth.
2Expecting physical treatment, Strange instead finds a
center for healing that is the front line of a battle between
the Masters of the Mystic Arts and forces bent on destroying reality.
3Strange must choose whether to return to his life of fortune
and status or leave it behind to defend the world as the most
powerful sorcerer in existence.
4
En route to becoming the new Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor
Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world
and what lies beyond.
5Strange utilizes a dizzying array of metaphysical abilities and
artifacts. The Cloak of Levitation gives him the ability to fly.
The Eye of Agamoto allows him to manipulate probabilities.
6Kaecilius, a sorcerer, is the primary antagonist of Doctor
Strange. Philosophical disagreements with teachings of The
Ancient One led him to defect from the rest of the sorcerers.
7Villains in the film are known as The Zealots, who have
become seduced by what they have found in another
dimension.
8Doctor Strange, created by Steve Ditko, debuted
in March 1963 in the comic book “Strange
Tales” (#110).
9Stephen Strange lives in a spellprotected
building known as the
Sanctum Sanctorum.
CGI effects may remind
10 some viewers of the
2010 movie ‘Inception.’
