WATCHING BBC iPLAYER?
YOU NOW NEED A TV LICENCE
If you’re a fan of EastEnders or the Great British Bakeoff,
then watching an episode online is about to get a whole
load more costly. It’s now illegal to use the BBC iPlayer
catch-up service without paying for a TV licence – but are
you prepared?
Before September, it was perfectly legal to watch anything
on BBC iPlayer on your laptop or smartphone without a
license – in fact, you only needed a TV license to watch
live television.
Now, in a bid to generate additional income for the
BBC, the TV Licensing authority has closed the loophole,
meaning anybody who chooses to access content from
iPlayer demand will be expected to have a TV licence, which
currently costs £145.50 per year.
Anybody who uses the service without a license will be
breaking the law, and could risk prosecution and even a
fine of up to £1,000 – expensive for a single episode of
Top Gear!
Although the Government’s report suggested that the TV
Licensing authority adopted a verification method – such as
Classroom Strategies KS1/2/3
A group intervention - inference training
Professional development for staff
Improving reading comprehension
and enjoyment - a training resource
for primary and secondary schools.
issuing passwords or individual accounts for every licence
payer – TV Licensing says that it will continue to follow the
enforcement methods it used previously.
This means that you could receive a letter or even a visit
from an enquiry officer if you are believed to have been
watching television without a license.
Some people – such as the blind, the elderly and those
with black and white televisions - are eligible for a free or
discounted licence, but the vast majority are still expected
to pay.
Although the new enforcement is likely to raise further
questions, everything you already knew about the TV Licence
remains. You’ll still need to pay if you want to watch or
record any live TV on any channel, regardless of the device
you are using. If you want to find out more about what
the change means for you, visit tvlicensing.co.uk/iplayerinfo.
The Bowes Museum - a
Napoleonic treasure trove
Conquering Europe was very much a family affair
for Napoleon Bonaparte. While he himself had the
impressive titles of Emperor of the French and King of
Italy at the height of his power in the early 19th century,
he also placed a brother, Joseph, on the Spanish throne
and made another, Louis, King of Holland. And then there
was Napoleon’s notorious younger sister, Pauline. All
four of these Bonapartes are depicted in exhibits at the
Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle.
Walk through the museum and you’ll struggle to miss
its most impressive depiction of the Emperor himself:
a portrait, commissioned in 1812, of Napoleon in his
coronation robes. The Emperor holds a sceptre in one
hand, while prominent on the robes are symbols of the
gold bee, as commonly worn by the old kings of France.
There’s also a similarly imposing portrait of Napoleon
III, the first Napoleon’s nephew who would become
Emperor of the French much later in the century.
But anyway, let’s return to the period of the original
Napoleonic Wars – and more specifically, the museum’s
portrait of Joseph Bonaparte as King of Spain. While
the portrait, dating from 1811, unsurprisingly serves as
a piece of propaganda, it was especially needed in the
case of Joseph, whose rule of Spain was, in a word, inept.
Napoleon’s forces never managed to entirely conquer
the country – and Joseph, who originally took the Spanish
throne in 1808, eventually abdicated in 1813.
Similarly unsuccessful was Louis in Holland, where he
reigned from 1806 until 1810. While Louis gained a
degree of respect from his subjects, his tendency to act
in Dutch interests rather than Napoleon’s saw Louis
increasingly lose favour with his brother – who, following
Louis’ abdication, annexed the Netherlands to France.
Today, the museum has a Louis bust, dating from 1810,
on display – and Louis also fathered who would, over
three decades after the first Napoleon’s death, become
Napoleon III…
Unlike Napoleon, Joseph and Louis, the Bonaparte sister
Pauline would never rule a country. However, the onetime
Duchess of Guastalla, two 1810 busts of which
appear in the museum, certainly developed something of
a reputation, due to her forward and provocative nature.
The museum displays a Louise-Marie-Jeanne Mauduit
portrait of Pauline, made when the subject was in her
mid-twenties. Amusingly, Pauline here comes across as far
more wholesome than she actually was. A great example
of how propaganda could be intended to help not only
political rulers…
Are you running correctly?
Well done everyone who participated in last
month’s Great North Run. Are you inspired?
Make sure you read these tips to make sure your
running correctly.
Running should be as easy as putting one
foot in front of the other, right? Anyone can
run, but having proper technique can make a
huge difference.
Good running technique will help make your
runs feel less tiring, reduce your risk of injury and
ultimately be more enjoyable.
Keep your head straight
Look straight ahead of you, about 30 to 40 metres
out in front, and avoid looking down at your feet.
Looking down will create tension in your neck and
shoulders. Keep your jaw and neck relaxed.
Don’t hunch your shoulders
Your shoulders should be back and down. Keep
them relaxed and avoid tensing them. Don’t hunch
over as this restricts breathing, allowing less oxygen
to get to the muscles.
Keep your hands relaxed
Your hands should be relaxed, but don’t let
them flop. Tight hands can cause tension all the
way up to the back and shoulders.
Keep your arms at 90 degrees
Your arms should be bent at a 90-degree angle.
Try to swing them forward and back, not across
your body. The arm movement helps to propel
you forward, so swinging them sideways is a waste
of energy.
Lean forward while running
Don’t bend forward or backward from the waist
as this places pressure on the hips. Some experts
advise running in an upright position, but Phillips
believes using your body weight to lean forward a
bit while running can reduce heel strike and help
you land on the middle of your foot.
Keep your hips stable
Your hips should remain stable and forward-facing.
Don’t stick your bottom out or rock your hips
from side to side. Keeping this position in your hips
can help prevent low back and hip pain.
Must Do Garden Tasks For October
Watering - Should it turn into an Indian summer,
remember to keep watering thoroughly once
or twice a week rather than little and often.
Containers and hanging baskets need watering
every day.
For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave
a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The
same goes for established plants in dry periods -
camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas
will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry.
Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple
of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a
circle of clear earth around them - this MUST be
kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture
getting through. Mulching with bark or compost
will help.
Planting - With the ideal planting conditions of
autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to
plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes,
perennials and bulbs. The key to successful
planting is to water in well. Soak the rootball
in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the
surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water
and allow to drain away. Place the plant in
the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well
with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge
advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a
dry hole and watered only on the surface.
Dig clay soil - If your soil is heavy clay, start
digging it over now - add plenty of organic matter
to improve the quality and pea shingle to improve
the drainage. It can be left in a pretty rough state
over the winter when the cold will break the lumps
down, making spring planting easier!
Start your Compost - Get your compost going
by buying a compost bin or building a partially
enclosed and easily accessible area for a heap. It
is essential to replace the goodness in soil and
autumn produces quantities of garden waste that
will add invaluable organic richness back into your
soil next spring.
Clear garden debris - Keep weeding; most
perennial weeds are susceptible to weedkiller
this month and systemic weedkillers will carry
on working throughout the winter. Also clear any
debris and diseased material from your garden.
Pests and diseases that overwinter in your garden
will reappear next spring with a vengeance so get
rid of them now. Burn diseased material and put
the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody
stems) in the compost.
Clean out the greenhouse - Once tomatoes
and other greenhouse crops are over, give the
greenhouse a thorough clean to prevent pests from
making a home in that lovely warm environment,
ready to leap into action next spring.
Focus on our
customers.
We listen to your
concerns, where much
thought will be given to
your individual needs.
Quakers Zone
Our monthly report on Darlington 1883 from Ray Simpson, Communications and Media Manager
Darlington Football Club have made a great start to the
season, much to the encouragement of their supporters.
The Quakers, playing in the Vanarama National
League North, have won seven and drawn two of
their eleven league games so far, to put them in
fourth place in the table, just a point behind leaders
Fylde and Kidderminster.
They’ve already played a quarter of their league
games, but now their hectic schedule eases off, and
they have no more midweek games until nearer
Christmas.
Manager Martin Gray said; “The players are due
plenty of credit, because they have put so much
effort into the season so far. They have travelled
some long distances, and come away with victories –
for example, away at Gloucester.
Something
urgent?
We understand the need for
urgency in repairing your
denture disaster.
Tailor made
smiles.
We offer a wide range of
natural gender specific
tooth shapes/shades and
much needed solutions to
more complex cases.
“It’s incredible the number of games we’ve had. We’ve
played eleven games, whereas the Premiership have
only played half that – and Premiership players don’t
have to get up for work at six in the morning like our
lads do before they play football.”
Meanwhile, work on the new ground at Blackwell
Meadows is progressing nicely, and Quakers hope to
move in with the rugby club in late autumn.
The supporters are certainly getting behind the club
– sales of the new shirts are approaching the 1,000
mark, a terrific performance for a club outside the
Football League.
PIN-PRICK MENINGITIS TEST COULD
BE AVAILABLE WITHIN FIVE YEARS.
A test has been developed that could help to
diagnose bacterial infections, including meningitis in
minutes. If made available through the NHS, this test
would significantly reduce the time taken to diagnose
the disease and minimise the risk of misdiagnosis.
The new test, developed by a team at Imperial
College London, is a major breakthrough in the rapid
diagnosis of meningitis and sepsis in children. If made
available through the NHS, it could allow treatment
to begin much earlier, saving hundreds of lives and
reducing the risk of life-changing after-effects.
The signs and symptoms of meningitis are notoriously
difficult to diagnose, and can be dismissed as a cold
or flu. Many young children presenting the early
symptoms of the disease are initially sent home,
before being rushed back to hospital a few hours
later as their condition rapidly deteriorates.
Currently, doctors grow bacteria in a sample of blood,
in a process which can take up to 48 hours.
Responding to the news, Liz Brown, CEO at
Meningitis Now said:
“A delay in life-saving treatment for bacterial
meningitis can be a matter of life or death. We
welcome this significant progress in the development
of a rapid test for meningitis and sepsis.
“We would however, continue to advise people to
know the signs and symptoms of meningitis and
to seek immediate medical attention if they have
any concerns”.
The study led by Professor Michael Levin has shown
that a bacterial infection can be distinguished from
other causes of fever, such as a viral infection, using
a pattern of genes that are switched on or off in
response to an infection.
A larger project will now begin to develop these
findings into a pin-prick diagnostic test, which
Professor Levin believes could be available through
the NHS within five years.
About Meningitis Now
Meningitis Now is the founder of the meningitis
movement and the only charity dedicated to fighting
meningitis in the UK.
With 30 years’ experience, we are working towards
a future where no one in the UK loses their life to
meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they
need to rebuild their lives.
Meningitis Now fights the disease on all fronts.
At Darlington Building Society we like to engage with
customers of all ages and with our popular Darly the
train colouring books and activities within local schools
we aim to get children hooked on saving and managing
their money from an early age.
We are aware of our responsibilities as a local, mutual
society to help children and young people to learn to
save, manage money and budget from an early age.
This personal engagement with local schools has built
strong relationships and led to initiatives such as the
one at The King James I Academy in Bishop Auckland,
which launched its own building society thanks to a
unique partnership with the Darlington Building Society.
The Academy Building Society is open twice a week
during lunch times and will be overseen by a group
of students who have received training from Darlington
Building Society to manage and run their own
mini-branch.
Instilling the value of money into children is crucial
in helping them to grow into financially astute adults.
Encouraging a young person to save some of their
pocket money to buy those coveted trainers or the
latest smartphone is equally valuable, and again a
lesson that will stand them in good stead for the rest
of their lives.
The easiest way to get into the savings habit is to set
things up so that you automatically add a little bit each
month. That way you won’t have to remember to make
the payment and you won’t be tempted to skip a month
if those new shoes that you don’t really need jump out
of the shop window!
There are a myriad of savings products available, with
instant access accounts, ISAs, fixed term, fixed rate
and many more. Deciding which is the best account
for you will depend on your circumstances, most
importantly how much money you can afford to put
aside, and if you will need to access it immediately at
any time.
Rates and accessibility are usually at the top of the list
when choosing a savings account but there are other
considerations that are important to some customers.
Saving with a mutual, like Darlington Building Society,
not only benefits the customer but it can support
the local community in ways that you may not have
thought of. Savings fund the mortgages on offer,
enabling local people to get onto or climb the housing
ladder. Mutuals, and this is key to Darlington Building
Society, also donate to local good causes, charities and
organisations.
Mutuals also offer a far more personal and customerfocussed
experience and that is a significant advantage
to many customers. Talking to an adviser who can
explain simply and easily all the different products
available will break through the jargon and help you
make an informed decision on the best savings regime
for you
The bottom line is; saving money is very important and
the sooner you start the better. If saving hard-earned
paper round wages for a new bike leads to putting a
regular sum aside to buy your first home then it is a
lesson well learned.
Colin Fyfe, Chief Executive.
Places to go.
Poole, Dorset
For several years we had a booking clerk at Chester-le-Street
by the name of David Poole and I took him once to his
ancestral town for an event at Bournemouth University, which
despite the name is mostly located in adjoining Poole. As I
recall, we returned by car through the night – not as good as the
railway. By train from the north east, it is possible to go direct
via Birmingham to Southampton Central or Bournemouth, and
take another train into Poole. Alternatively, it is often faster
and cheaper to travel via London, into King’s Cross and out of
Waterloo with South West Trains into Poole.
12th. Nowadays the RNLI builds its own lifeboats since the few
boatbuilders that survive are mostly building pleasure craft. A
modern lifeboat is more akin to a warship than a pleasure craft
and finding no suitable boatbuilders for its modern designs, the
RNLI has taken to building them itself.
Employment Round Up
Should bad employee handbooks and policing
staff go into HR Room 101?
At a recent gathering of HR professionals, the unheard of was
heard! Abandon staff handbooks, tear up your rules and policies
and allow staff more freedoms. Hummm… all very well and in
ideal world it would be great wouldn’t it to think everyone
will respect that freedom, but perhaps I’m too long in the tooth
and have seen too much of life to be convinced this is the
way forward.
How I ask, would you defend a disciplinary sanction without
referencing the procedure or even defining what constitutes
misconduct? And how about redundancy selection if no one
knows the criteria and how it would be applied? My generation,
are becoming increasingly marginalized by the emergence of
new and alternative HR models that are less prescriptive in
approach, and that’s fine; we need new ideas, concepts, and
professionals. I wholeheartedly sign up to the idea productivity
must be inspired, not forced and employers must motivate their
workforce to ensure quality output, not force them to work by
imposing strict rules and working hours while breathing down
their necks.
But okay, I’m still biased and think HR still has a role to play in
the modern workplace, if only to provide advice and guidance
on the more bizarre cases that distract managers from the job
in hand.
I travelled again to Poole in September and travelled via
London, arriving in Poole mid-afternoon with a First Class
Advance ticket from Clapham Junction (with Annual Gold Card
discount) following a visit to Southern Railway which has been
hit by troubles recently. Poole station only has two platforms
and not much cover and has been subject to development
plans for years, but it is central and has a level crossing
nearby which bisects the High Street which is quite unusual. I
can only think of one other town, Paignton in Devon, which has
a similar arrangement.
Poole is the headquarters of the RNLI, the Lifeboats charity,
and they have a well-equipped training facility with a 60 room
hotel attached. This is for training lifeboat crews throughout
the country, but, if not all rooms are required, the general public
can book in to the Training College and enjoy what is now the
#1 hotel in Poole on TripAdvisor. The bedrooms all have a view
of the harbour and a proper study area as well as a bedroom,
and for reasonable rates too. And what other hotel invites you
to board a lifeboat simulator and head off into the waves from
Dover Harbour to see a ship on fire in the busy shipping lanes? I
was holding on tight until I realised there was no need…
The photograph shows some of the RNLI training dinghies and
on the right is the new Shannon Class lifeboat constructed in
Poole for Amble in Northumberland. It is being prepared for its
voyage to its new home, and is due to arrive in Amble on October
Poole is a busy port town with ships sailing to France and
to the Channel Islands, as well as pleasure boats sailing t
o local islands, one of which is Brownsea Island.
Lieutenant-General Robert Baden-Powell, a war hero
from the Boer War, wanted to test his ideas for the book
Scouting for Boys. Boys from different social backgrounds
participated from 1 to 8 August 1907 in activities around
camping, observation, woodcraft, chivalry, lifesaving and
patriotism. Recognised as the world’s first Scout camp, the event
is regarded as the real origin of the worldwide Scout movement.
As a result, the local scout troops are the oldest established in
the country.
Poole also boasts one of the most expensive housing areas in the
UK. Sandbanks was developed from holiday bungalows which
were demolished and replaced with mansions for millionaires.
There are many pubs and restaurants in the Old Town area,
mostly with a nautical theme. Certainly one of the more
interesting towns on the south coast.
What is the definition of Insanity?
According to one great thinker ‘Insanity is doing the same
thing over and over again and expecting a different result.’
– Albert Einstein.
Perhaps you’ve tried many ways to lose weight but without
success. You know you should exercise more, drink or eat less
but you don’t. Maybe you are petrified at the thought of public
speaking, exams, flying, driving or an interview no matter how
you’ve tried to calm your nerves.
Such difficulties lie in the subconscious, where patterns of
negative thinking take hold. Add anxiety and emotion to the
mix and it’s no wonder that despite your best conscious, logical
efforts, you haven’t achieved the change you so badly want.
Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique used with success to treat
many problems. It can help to train your brain to focus on what
you want, rather than on what you don’t want. So if you want
to make changes, try changing how you think to give you control.
rapport and positive relationships. I’m a trained interviewer and
have carried out hundreds of interviews with people from a
diverse range of backgrounds. I am empathetic by nature, nonjudgemental
and a good listener. I have a natural inclination to
help and support others with a fascination for psychology and
the mind; which is what drew me to hypnotherapy. I also have a
good sense of humour!
You owe it to yourself to be free of the things that are weighing
you down or holding you back. So give me a call for a friendly
chat about how I could help you change to get different results.
After all it worked for Albert!
Influence
Healthwatch Darlington helps
people get the best out of their local
health and social care services by
improving them and shaping them for
tomorrow. We are independent from the
services you use and give you the
opportunity to have your say and influence
and improve local services.
Information and Signposting
Healthy New Towns
Darlington was named as one of 10 Healthy
New Town (HNT) sites earlier this year.
The project aims to encourage local
authorities, developers and the NHS to
work more closely together, to look at how
health and care services are provided and
aim to create a virtual hub of help and
support. The outcome of all of these
people working together will be to improve
the general health and wellbeing of the
local population.
Healthwatch Darlington have received
comments from the public in relation to
waiting times for appointments and
referrals to specialist appointments. Some
individuals told us that appointment times
with their GP had felt rushed due to delays
in the practice and this left them feeling
less important.
More information on Healthy New Towns
can be found at...
https://www.england.nhs.uk/ourwork/inn
ovation/healthy-new-towns/
Would it help you, if you were able to
access an appointment virtually? Would a
local hub in your area improve the access
into services for you?
You can be involved in shaping local
services based on the views of people in
your community. You could become a
Healthwatch Darlington Workplace
Champion and become the link between
our charity and your workplace. Would
you be interested in becoming the
Workplace Champion for your Business?
We tell services about your feedback and
hold them to account.
and social care:
Healthwatch Darlington want to speak to
you in your working environment. We
want to be in the best place to gather your
feedback when you are working during the
day.
Does your workplace have a communal
break area we could come along to?
Would you and your colleagues like to tell
us about your health and social care
Life’s Better when you’re Dancing!
But don’t just take our word for it... come along and try for yourself!
One of the best things about dancing is that whilst
you’re having fun moving to music and meeting
people, you’re getting all the health benefits of a
good workout too. Regular dancing is great for
helping you lose weight, maintaining strong bones,
improving posture and muscle strength, increasing
balance and co-ordination and beating stress.
