What motivates me, more than anything, is contributing to patients' well-being by making<br />
discoveries that will change, or even save, their lives and revolutionize treatments. Thanks to the<br />
work and research conducted, we have succeeded in decreasing the mortality associated with heart<br />
disease, but there is still much to do because it remains the number one cause of death worldwide.<br />

In 1954, with the support of the Grey Nuns and a good friend,<br />
the prominent Montreal businessman and philanthropist Mr. J.-Louis<br />
Lévesque, the dream of visionary Dr. Paul David became a reality:<br />
the Montreal Heart Institute entered into history.<br />
A heartfelt story<br />
I<br />
was born with pulmonary stenosis, a congenital heart defect. Up until I turned 20, this defect caused a<br />
lot of health problems for me. I often had shortness of breath, stomach issues, and blue lips and fingertips.<br />
I was also very skinny. With the state of my health, my family doctor at the time sent me to the Montreal<br />
Heart Institute because I could have died if I didn't have heart surgery.<br />
The cardiac surgeon, Dr. Pierre Grondin, a wonderful man who unfortunately passed away, carefully<br />
explained the entire procedure, which really reassured me. The nursing staff also took good care of me<br />
throughout my stay at the Montreal Heart Institute.<br />
The surgery changed my life! I was able to start doing things again, like working as a hairdresser. Life<br />
opened up for me and my dream of having a family came true. I had two healthy daughters and I've been<br />
with my husband for 45 years.<br />
