We haue been dying to stay <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>Astley</strong> <strong>Castle</strong>for y<strong>on</strong>ks, and<br />
earlier this summer ue finally<br />
got the chance to spend a<br />
useek <strong>at</strong> this incredible and<br />
unique building.<br />

Prize, the UKs most<br />
prestgfous architecture prize.<br />
It's also a dog friendly house<br />
so the m<strong>on</strong>keAs came too!<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>Astley</strong> - the louely Grzegorz<br />
Gebik and Mr M, both of<br />
ushom are uerA talented<br />

<strong>Astley</strong> <strong>Castle</strong> is a thirteenth<br />
century fortified manor house<br />
th<strong>at</strong> was left in ruins by a<br />
devast<strong>at</strong>ing fire in tg79. By 2oo7<br />
<strong>Astley</strong> <strong>Castle</strong> was listed by<br />
English Heritage as <strong>on</strong>e of<br />
Britain's most endangered sites.<br />
The Landmark Trust took acti<strong>on</strong><br />
and embarked <strong>on</strong> a bold<br />
restor<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> project to rescue this<br />
incredible building.<br />
Post-restor<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>, the ruins are<br />
still very much in evidence,<br />
forming an impressive courtyard<br />
through which visitors now<br />
pass to enter the house.

Happy Dogs<br />
We've learned from<br />
experience th<strong>at</strong> settled and<br />
happy dogs make for a much<br />
more relaxed <strong>holiday</strong> for us!<br />
Aside from the obvious dog<br />
food, dog bowls, collars, leads<br />
and poop bags, here are some<br />
of our packing essentials when<br />
staying away with dogs ...<br />
GPS Trockers<br />
We have small GPS tags th<strong>at</strong><br />
clip <strong>on</strong>to our dogs' collars and<br />
sync with an app <strong>on</strong> our<br />
mobile ph<strong>on</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> can be<br />
set to sound an alarm if any of<br />
the dogs wand.er further than<br />
we want them too - handy if<br />
the dogs are running around<br />
out of sight. There are many<br />
types available to buy <strong>on</strong>line.<br />
We use the 'TrackR Bravo'tag<br />
from thetrackr.com.<br />
them zipping around in the<br />
dark like fireflies! Search 'LED<br />

Fun Stuff<br />
Bored dogs in an unfamiliar<br />
rented house is a potential<br />
recipe for disaster!<br />
We always pack a basket full<br />
of their favourite toys to help<br />
keep our dogs amused.<br />
We also take lots of balls and<br />
a ball chucker so th<strong>at</strong> they<br />
burn lots of energy playrng<br />
fetch - sleepy dogs makes for<br />
for peaceful evenings!<br />
LED Light CoIIars<br />
If we're outdoors with our<br />
dogs <strong>at</strong> night they wear LED<br />
light collars so th<strong>at</strong> we can see<br />
them easily in the dark. The<br />
collars have LED lights sewn<br />
into the length of the collar.<br />

Sleeping Essentials<br />
We are specialist dog bedding<br />
designers so it's probably no<br />
surprise th<strong>at</strong> we take doggie<br />
sleeping arrangements very<br />
seriously, even when away <strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>holiday</strong>!<br />
We pack heaps of beds and<br />
blankets when travelling with<br />
our dogs, especially if staying<br />
in a big house like <strong>Astley</strong> so<br />
th<strong>at</strong> we d<strong>on</strong>'t have to lug beds<br />
from room to room.<br />

<strong>Astley</strong> Open Days<br />
We first visited <strong>Astley</strong> <strong>on</strong> an<br />
open day. Landmark runs<br />
open days throughout the<br />
year so th<strong>at</strong> the house can be<br />
enjoyed even if you have not<br />
booked it for a <strong>holiday</strong>. It's<br />
well worth a day trip! See the<br />
Landmark site for more info.<br />
Random <strong>Astley</strong> Tips<br />
Mobile ph<strong>on</strong>es worked fine<br />
<strong>at</strong> <strong>Astley</strong> but d<strong>at</strong>a c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong><br />
was p<strong>at</strong>chy and slow so it's a<br />
perfect place to hide away<br />
from the outside world! Bear<br />
in mind too th<strong>at</strong> in keeping<br />
with other Landmarks, <strong>Astley</strong><br />
does not have a TV, DVD,<br />
radio or broadband.<br />
Cars are not allowed into the<br />
grounds <strong>at</strong> <strong>Astley</strong> and parking<br />
is in a secure stable yard by<br />
the perimeter wall. Luggage is<br />
transported to the house by<br />
wheelbarrow!<br />
<strong>Astley</strong> is a self-c<strong>at</strong>ering<br />
house. We arranged a grocery<br />
delivery (through Ocado) for<br />
the evening of our arrival and<br />
another delivery mid-stay.<br />
There are a couple of small<br />
c<strong>on</strong>venience stores a short<br />
drive away in Stockingford.<br />
The grounds <strong>at</strong> <strong>Astley</strong> are<br />
part walled and part mo<strong>at</strong>ed.<br />
Our dogs showed no interest<br />
in crossing the mo<strong>at</strong> and so we<br />
were able to let them run free<br />
in the gardens unsupervised,<br />
Intrepid explorers may require<br />
supervisi<strong>on</strong>!<br />
