The glittering comeback is now following one of the most spectacular classic-car 

discoveries of recent times. The BMW 507 was driven by US musician Elvis Presley, 

famous already at that time as the King of Rock’n’Roll, while he was doing his military 

service in Germany. After that it disappeared for nearly 50 years and was believed to 

have been lost before returning to the limelight. 

After almost two years of exacting restoration work, BMW Group Classic is presenting 

the roadster for the first time in a public arena. Restored to its original condition, 

it was recently exhibited on 21 August 2016 at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble 

Beach, California. 

The engine for Elvis’ BMW 507 was completely rebuilt from spare parts. The 3.2 litre 

V8 engine was reconditioned precisely in conformity with the original specifications of 

the BMW 507, but it was not given an engine number on account of the unavoidable 

but otherwise unusual use of old and new components.

at the Rio 2016 Olympics for himself (for the 100m butterfl y swim event beating the Olympic 

Record), he also won it for his country, his family, for every Singaporean - it is both a personal 

and national achievement, etched in history forever. 

In all the interviews and stories about Schooling after his feat, a common theme runs through

you think he’s an angry rebel that you don’t mess with, 

a typical villain with gangster connections

You can be forgiven. You’re subconsciously 

thinking of antagonist Zhou Daqiu in the 

drama serial Portrait of Home in 2005, and the 

rebellious characters Soh has portrayed in his 

acting career, always shouting, always angry. 

In real life Cavin Soh is a down to earth, affable family 

man with wife Serena Yeo, son Kayden (5 years) and 

daughter Bethany (3 years). 

Turn back a few chapters before family life to his 

beginnings in the entertainment world, you’ll see a string 

of feats in Soh’s career as singer and songwriter, radio 

DJ, actor and entertainment host. 

It all began when Soh got together with friends to form 

a band called DreamzFM and released three acclaimed 

albums. He was even invited by the UN to New York to 

co-perform the 30 Anniversary Concert Theme Song. 

From that point, Soh went on to be a well-loved radio 

deejay on MediaCorp’s Y.E.S. 93.3FM before moving on 

to a highly prolific television and acting career. 

Another highlight of Cavin Soh’s career is winning Best 

Supporting Actor for that role as hot-head Zhou Daqiu in 

the drama serial Portrait of Home in 2005 at the annual 

Star Awards. This character has also garnered the most 

votes as the Top 10 Most Memorable Villian at the 

Star Awards 2007’s anniversary special. Being a multiawarded 

TV personality in Singapore, Soh has earned 

the distinction of being one of the more versatile and 

multi-talented artists of his generation. 

Cavin Soh was also heavily involved in multiple hosting 

programmes such as Back to School (2014), Let’ s 

Cook (2013), Where the Queue Starts (4 seasons),

choice to be cast the role of a judge on SuperBand 

and Campus Superstar, both very popular local singing 

contests. 

With all his achievements and awards, Cavin Soh

WHAT IS THE LATEST PROJECT THAT YOU ARE 

TAKING ON RIGHT NOW? 

Currently I am in the midst of filming a new drama titled Going 

Home. It will be aired on Channel 8 early 2017 around Chinese 

New Year. The character I play is a loving husband that every 

woman dreams of having. But as all plots go, there are twists 

and not everything is a bed of roses as you see it. My wife (in 

the show) and I are going through a lot of stress and pressure 

when it comes to conceiving. We long to have a complete 

family unit but because of the problems we face, the tension 

between us becomes unbearable. Can the perfect husband 

soothe things and make everything right again? Stay tuned! 

AS A SONGWRITER, WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST 

TO WRITE A SONG? DO LYRICS COME EASILY TO 

YOUR MIND? 

Everything around me can be inspirational - everyday life, 

my children, my wife, love, people around me. But to put it 

all together, a calm and quiet environment is much needed. 

It’s much like writing a book, but with a beautiful, melodious 

chorus to go with it. Usually, when you have the melody 

playing in your head and the scene of the “song”, the lyrics will 

flow naturally.

YOU WORKED WITH. WHAT ARE THE BEST TIPS 

ABOUT ACTING DID YOU PICK UP FROM THEM? 

Use your heart to deliver the role rather than just rely on using 

techniques or copying from example. If you don’t use your 

heart you may end up looking like you’re faking it, trying too 

hard, or the character comes out looking “flat”. You have to 

love what you do - I love my job and I am passionate about 

what I do. That is a positive mindset that can keep a lot of 

people going. Study the roles (in real life) to get into character 

more realistically. Lastly, always accept compliments and 

listen to criticism positively, then constantly see how you can 

improve. 

WHICH ACTORS AND MUSICIANS DO YOU 

ADMIRE MOST TODAY? 

Oh, this is an easy one - Denzel Washington and Koji Tamaki are 

my all time favourites.

HOW DO YOU RELAX AFTER A HARD DAY AT 

WORK? 

I usually come home, put my things down and do a yoga 

savasana (lie down, close my eyes and think of nothing but 

my muscles relaxing). At this point, my kids will run over and 

pile themselves on me giving me their biggest bear hug! This 

usually provides me all the comfort that’s needed to melt 

away all the stress I experience at work. Then I’ll end the night 

catching up with my wife, having a few beers together. 

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG BOY 

IF HE WANTS TO BE AN ACTOR OR MUSICIAN 

LIKE YOU? 

The road is never easy. Be passionate about it, go with your 

heart and live your dream. Do not be afraid to fail.

Successor to the 911 RSR enters test phase with new GTE/GTLM 

classes from 2017 

The most successful GT race car of the 2015 season will be replaced by a 

completely new race car in 2017. The successor to the 911 RSR has already 

completed a successful rollout on the test track in Weissach. Now begins the test 

phase on selected racetracks around the world. 

At its first test runs at Weissach, the majority of the Porsche works drivers were 

able to get a first impression of the new 2017 GTE race car. “It is definitely unusual 

to put several drivers behind the wheel at a rollout,” says Marco Ujhasi, Overall 

Project Manager GT Works Motor-sport. “But since all of our works drivers are 

involved in the development of the new car, the ones who could fit it into their 

schedules came to Weissach and turned a couple of laps.” 

The first outing of the RSR successor is planned for January 2017 at the 24-hour 

race at Daytona. “The race debut of a completely new vehicle at a 24-hour race 

is a big challenge. But we are right on schedule,” explains the Head of Porsche 

Motorsport, Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser.

There was a new role for Patrick Dempsey at the recent World 

Endurance Championship in Silverstone, UK. The Hollywood star 

was no longer involved as a race driver but as co-owner of the 

Dempsey Proton Racing team. 

The recent European Le Mans Series in Silverstone, UK, brought together 

128 drivers and 34 teams representing 26 different nations from Europe, 

Asia, North and South America. The 4 Hours of Silverstone took place on 

the full 5.901km Grand Prix circuit on the same schedule as the opening 

round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

PATRICK, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR NEW 

ROLE AS CO-OWNER OF DEMPSEY PROTON RACING 

AND THE 911 RSR WITH THE NUMBER 77? 

It’s great to be involved in motorsports from a new perspective. 

Last year I made the decision to mainly focus on motorsports 

as a driver. I raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship 

– one of the biggest and most rewarding challenges in my life. 

This year I am excited to support the team in my new role as a 

co-owner. Currently we are preparing for Silverstone and the 

team is doing a world class job. I will be present there for the 

first round of the season, as well as in Le Mans. 

HOW OFTEN WILL WE SEE YOU AT THE RACETRACK? 

I’ll try to be at the races as much as my schedule allows me to. 

I have always been a huge fan of motor sports and I love taking 

on new challenges. My new role as a co-owner of Dempsey 

Proton Racing gives me the opportunity to combine both. So 

far it’s been quite a rewarding experience to learn about the 

managerial aspects of co-owning a race team and I can’t wait to 

kick off the season in Silverstone this weekend.

THE FIA WEC TITLE DEFENDERS ARE THE LINEUP FOR 

THE NO 77 911 RSR. ARE YOU PROUD OF HAVING 

SUCH GREAT DRIVERS? 

Oh yes, extremely proud. Richard and Michael are amongst the 

fastest and most experienced drivers in the field. They have 

a lot of responsibility to defend the championship and they 

are the right drivers for this kind of pressure. I am incredibly 

lucky to have them in our team. But it will not be easy, as 

they are the only Porsche in GTE-Pro class. And some other 

manufacturers are racing new cars in a full 2016 specification. 

Our car is an updated 2015 car. But reliability should be one of 

our advantages. And whenever the track is wet, the 911 is by 

far the best car on the grid. We have proven this multiple times 

in the past season. 

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL TO DRIVE A 911 RSR? 

Driving a 911 RSR is as exhilarating as it is demanding. It’s 

a very powerful car and there is a lot of force acting on your 

body, so you need to be in good shape to put in consistent lap 

times. At the same time it’s very well balanced. Feedback is 

great and it’s easy to feel what the car is doing. Exactly what 

you want from a good GT race car. It still feels like a 911 road 

car, but it is even more precise and much faster on the race 

track. Above all it’s a fun and thrilling experience. There is 

really nothing else like it. 

IN 2015 YOU MAINLY FOCUSED ON IMPROVING YOUR 

SKILLS AS A DRIVER – WITH FANTASTIC SUCCESS. P2 

IN GTE-AM IN LE MANS AND THE WIN IN FUJI. HOW 

WAS IT FOR YOU? 

Yes, it is completely a dream realized and come true. I worked 

very hard that season and it was great to achieve this many 

goals. It was a very fulfilling experience. As a sportsman 

success is what you are aiming for. All the preparation, all 

the workouts you do – you always have this success in mind. 

That’s your motivation.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE FEELING STANDING ON THE 

PODIUM – ESPECIALLY IN LE MANS – IN FRONT OF 

THOUSANDS OF FANS? 

This was my biggest dream come true. When you are standing 

up there in front of this massive crowd – it is hard to put it into 

words. It was so overwhelming and emotional in the best way. 

Especially when you think about the meaning and history of Le 

Mans and all the legendary race drivers who have raced there. I 

will certainly remember those moments for the rest of my life. 

ARE THERE OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2015 SEASON 

YOU WANT TO MENTION? 

I have tremendous, great memories from the 2015 season. I 

took my skills as a race driver to a new level which felt great. 

And working so closely with Porsche was really enjoyable. It 

was an extraordinary year. I look back at the season with great 

fondness and satisfaction. 

WHAT IS YOUR FOCUS FOR 2016? 

My focus is on building results as great as last year as a 

team leader. But as I already said: In GTE-Pro class it will be 

even more difficult. I am looking forward to the first race in 

Silverstone very much. 

YOUR FAMILY WILL HAVE MORE CONTACT WITH THE 

RACING SCENE IN 2016. ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT 

THAT? 

Yes, Porsche and family are all in one. Being involved in 

endurance racing means a lot of travel-ing. So being able share 

the experience and passion for racing with my family more 

often will be great.” 

LAST YEAR YOU CAME TO SILVERSTONE LAST 

MINUTE WITHOUT KNOWING THE TRACK, WHICH 

MUST HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. DO YOU 

ENJOY COMING TO SILVERSTONE NOW WITHOUT 

A RUSH, IN A DIFFERENT ROLE AND MORE TIME TO 

WATCH AND ENJOY THE RACE? 

Last year at Silverstone was not easy. Silverstone is a very fast 

and challenging track with a significant amount of history. Being 

there in a different role will be a great way to kick off the season 

from a different perspective. And definitively a more relaxed 

one. 

IN THE PAST YEARS YOU BECAME AN IMPORTANT 

MEMBER OF THE PORSCHE FAMILY. HOW WOULD YOU 

DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OTHER 

DRIVERS AND ALL THE OTHER PORSCHE PEOPLE? 

I have always been a great Porsche fan. And working so closely 

with them is a truly inspiring experience. They’re great guys. I 

have a tremendous relationship with everyone in the Porsche 

family including all the drivers. I love being a part of the team. I 

got so much helpful advice from some of the best drivers in the 

world. This was very helpful to improve my skills and achieve 

these great results. 

WHERE DOES YOUR FASCINATION FOR MOTOR 

RACING COME FROM? 

My fascination began very early in my childhood. I always 

loved racing and cars since I was very young. My father would 

bring me home little Matchbox cars, we would watch or listen 

to the Indianapolis 500. I just always had an interest in all things 

racing.

you plan on working out, protein is even more necessary. 

Eliminate salt 

Eating more sodium causes your body to retain water, which in 

turn causes you to feel bloated and gain more weight. 

Fuel up with water 

Drink at least 2 litres of water each day. Water has the double 

effect of both hydrating your body and filling your stomach with 

a certain volume. Plus, water has no calories and no sugar. 

Don’t skip meals 

Most people think skipping a meal will help to lose weight. 

When you skip meals, your body stops breaking down fat and 

starts breaking down muscle tissue. Muscle tissue burns more 

calories at rest than other tissues, so you’re actually working 

against your goals. 

CULTIVATE THESE HABITS 

Keep a food journal 

Write down everything you eat. Keeping a journal allows you 

to note the effects of specific food on your body. This makes it 

easy to tweak your diet if necessary.

Prepare meals in advance 

Make a meal plan, and stick to it. Decide what snacks and main 

meals you’re going to eat this week instead of figuring it out on

Chew your food properly 

It takes about 20 minutes for the brain to register food satiety. 

So eat slowly as this lessens the chance of overeating. A 

fantastic way to slow down the speed of eating is to use 

chopsticks. 

No distractions while eating 

Don’t eat while you do other things, in general. Research shows 

that watching television, or reading, or working while you eat 

often causes people to eat much more food than they normally 

would. 

Find ways to manage your hunger 

Brush your teeth after a meal so you won’t be tempted into 

another round of eating. 

Cook your own meals 

Food sold at restaurants are usually higher in sodium and 

other weight-loss killers. The portions are also often much 

larger. Cooking your own meals allow you to choose healthier 

ingredients and make smaller portion sizes. You’ll know for sure 

exactly what’s going into your meals. 

Exercise 

Start exercising. Begin with a small goal of 30 minutes, three 

times per week if you aren’t exercising at all. Get going with 

short walks around the neighbourhood. 

Get into strength training. Start small, aiming for one or two 

15-minute sessions per week until you feel motivated to do 

more. Exercise large muscle groups to burn more calories and 

lose weight, instead of focusing on specific muscles. Doing 

squats is one great way to achieve this. 

Get a bicycle if you want to find a great way to get around and 

exercise at the same time. Walk or ride a bicycle instead of 

driving, so as to burn calories. 

STAY MOTIVATED 

Include a buddy support system 

If you decide to lose weight and have other friends who which 

to do so too, you could form a group to keep each other 

motivated. Even if you wish to lose or maintain weight solo, it 

still helps tremendously to have a friend or family member keep 

your progress in check. Ask them to inform you if you start 

straying from your goals. 

Reward yourself 

Buy jeans or a dress that is one or two sizes smaller so you can 

feel motivated to lose weight. Tell yourself that it’s a reward for 

staying in shape.

Skin types change over seasons and time. Find out 

what skin type you are and the makeup to choose

Few of us are hundred percent 

happy about the state of our skin. 

If you have oily skin, you’d have 

used up an obscene amount of oil 

blotters in your life up to now; without 

them, your face would be like a shining 

headlight, screaming for attention, of the 

unintended kind. Dry skins don’t have it 

well either; theirs are the prime breeding 

grounds for wrinkles and lines. During 

winter holidays or cold climates, dry 

skins are prone to cracks and peeling and 

a constant topical application of creams 

and lotions is necessary. 

Regardless of what skin type you are, 

you’ll face changes in your skin over 

seasons– colder climates require richer 

moisturisers and vice versa – and time, 

such as when we age for example. Also, 

the ways you have been taking care of 

your skin from young would determine 

how well your skin is able to cope later 

on; if you’ve neglected sunscreens but 

love the outdoors, then pigmentation and 

sun spots, as well as lines and wrinkles 

would be a way of life for you, much 

sooner than most people. Knowing your 

skin type, its conditions, and the changes 

it’ll face, would help prepare you for the 

appropriate care to better manage it. 

Some people would say, “Oh, it’s your 

genes,” attributing to genetics whether 

you have supple, clear skin or skin filled 

with open, large pores. Though it might 

have played a part, but the way you take 

care of your skin or not during growing 

up and in your adult years, is a bigger 

factor on how well your skin would fare 

in the end. If you have neglected your 

skin, without proper moisturising it or 

by using sun care, your skin can hardly 

stay supple and soft over time, don’t you 

think? Generally, what skin type you are 

is dependent on a few factors, according 

to WebMD: the sensitivity of your skin – 

this largely means whether your skin gets 

redness and itching easily; the oil content 

that determines the softness; and water, 

which shows up on whether your skin is 

elastic and supple. The few problem skin 

types out there include: 

OILY 

Your face gets greasy easily even after 

you’ve just washed it. On top of it, you 

get larger and open pores easily; they’re 

more pronounced when your face is oily. 

Pimples occasionally make their visitation 

and sometimes more during certain 

times of the month. If you’ve oily skin, 

you’ve to contend with all the above. 

One thing that is a reprieve though is 

that wrinkles take a backseat. Not that 

they won’t appear, but not that fast and 

not (cross our fingers) that many too. 

The regimen for oily skin types include 

using a mild cleanser to wash your face; 

avoid thick and rich moisturisers and opt 

for those that say “non-comodegenic 

and oil-free”; those with minimal 

ingredients are the best because they 

won’t aggravate your skin much. The 

other thing that is important is to scrub 

your face with a gentle scrub at least

COMBINATION 

Now, this is a confused state. Although 

it’s much better than oily skin in that only 

certain parts of the face get the oil, it’s 

still quite a headache for those with this 

condition. Combination skin types usually 

have more active oil glands at the t-zone 

– forehead, nose, and chin – whereas the 

rest of the face stays relatively oil-free or 

dry. Using the wrong products such as 

more emollient creams might clog pores

and cause blemishes. In some cases, 

some of us might even have to use 

different creams on different parts of the 

face – emollient types on the cheeks and 

oil-free gels on the t-zone. 

DRY 

On one hand, dry skin looks fabulous – 

crystal-clear with invisible pores. On the 

other hand, dry skin is prone to fine lines 

and visible dryness that can get really 

tight and uncomfortable. In colder places 

or even in an air-conditioned room for 

extended periods, skin can crack and 

peel and might even be scaly; not a 

happy sight and feeling. Some people 

might have dry skin from genetics. Aging 

will also cause our young skin to be less 

elastic and dry over time. Needless to 

say, dry skins need more moisturising 

than other skin types. Choose natural 

ingredients in moisturising such as 

shea butter and coconut oil rather 

than commercial creams with mineral 

oil; reapply as and when necessary 

especially when you feel your skin is 

unusually tight and dry. Consider using 

gentle cleansers on your face and body 

and avoid long baths if possible. 

Choosing the right makeup that is 

suitable for your skin type can also 

mask a lot of problems such as more 

prominent lines; wearing the right 

foundation can ensure that your problem 

areas are hidden and help to enhance 

your confidence. 

TYPE OF FOUNDATION 

The right or most ideal foundation is 

one that doesn’t show you’re wearing 

makeup at all. Your flaws are hidden 

and yet your skin is able to breathe 

and seems to glow; in short, you look 

good, and when you look good, you feel 

confident. Oily skins are generally more 

suited to powder foundations with matte 

finish; another choice would be mineral 

powder for lesser chemical effects on the 

skin such as redness or clogged pores. 

Combination skin types could choose 

water-based foundations because of 

their t-zone. Choose foundations with 

hydrating properties to even out the skin 

tone. Dry skins could consider cream 

or liquid foundations with moisturising 

properties; these help to provide cover 

as well as offer an element of skincare 

purpose. 

For every foundation to work its part, 

the skin has also to be properly prepped 

for a flawless cover and finish. Wash, 

moisturise your face as per normal, 

then apply your sunscreen on. At this 

point, primers may be applied for oily 

skin types for the makeup to stay in 

place better; this works well for humid 

places like Singapore where the sun and 

weather can cause havoc on our face, 

causing makeup to run faster. Then, 

apply your foundation. Some people 

prefer to use their fingers and hands to 

apply liquid foundations but although 

it’s a matter of choice, I personally think 

brushes are more hygienic and give 

a better finish. The important thing to 

note for all skin types is that at the end 

of the day, washing your face with the 

proper cleansers if you do wear makeup 

is necessary. And the advice you always 

hear about not wearing your makeup 

when you sleep is also true; do that if 

you want clean, healthy skin.

Snoring Woes 

Neither ear plugs nor a dense pillow can do much to 

muffle these droning sounds 


If you sleep beside someone with 

chronic snoring, the chances are you 

won’t get much sleep. To stop the 

snoring, we’re often tempted to take 

the quickest way out: elbow our partner 

at the sides till the noise ceases; the jab 

must not be so hard for him or her to 

wake up and give you a piece of mind 

(in which case, we can all say goodbye 

to sleep) but a shove that is enough to 

disrupt the sleep pattern to stop snoring. 

Even when we manage to do so, the 

moment of peace (like all good things 

we want in life) is fleeting. Just when 

you thought you were about to nod off 

to sleep, you were brought back to the 

droning sounds all over again. And the 

cycle goes on. 

The alternative, of course, could be to 

sleep in the next room when the noise 

grows tortuous, but it is hardly beneficial 

to the marriage and relationship. Ear 

plugs? They muffle out the noise, but are 

uncomfortable to sleep in. The snores 

are definitely not music to the ears but 

need we condition ourselves to it in 

order to have a restful sleep? 

When we sleep, our body relaxes. The air 

we breathe flows past our throat tissues, 

which are in a relaxed mode; when 

the air passes through these tissues, 

vibration occurs and snoring results. 

Snoring, in some cases, could also be 

a symptom of a more serious sleep 

disorder called sleep apnea. When a 

person has sleep apnea, he or she would 

experience breathing pauses, which can 

typically last from seconds to minutes 

numerous times throughout the night; 

when normal breathing resumes, he 

or she would breathe through with a 

choking sound. Sleep apnea is a serious 

disorder and leads to major health 

problems like heart disease and stroke; 

a doctor’s visit should be scheduled 

immediately if you’re suspected to suffer 

from it. 

Although snoring can happen to anyone, 

some people are more susceptible to it 

than others. The risk factors range from 

lifestyle habits to our anatomical setup. 

BEING OVERWEIGHT 

Overweight people tend to have bulkier 

tissues located at their throat. When 

they breathe, the air passes through a 

narrower passageway (obstructed by the 

bulky tissues); this would cause more 

vibration at the tissues and when this 

happens, snoring occurs. 

MOUTH ANATOMY 

WebMD says that a low, thick soft palate 

(top/ roof of your mouth) or a long uvula 

(dangling tissue in the back of mouth) 

can narrow the passageway from the 

nose to the throat, resulting in the airway 

being more congested and; thus snoring 

to happen. 

SMOKING BEFORE SLEEP 

Research has shown that smoking will 

cause the throat airway to inflame, 

restricting the air flow during breathing; 

the result is increased tissue vibration

and snoring. Furthermore, it has 

demonstrated that the inhalation of 

second-hand smoke will also cause your 

airway to be restricted and snoring to 

result over time. 

EFFECTS OF AGEING 

When we age, we lose muscle mass 

and strength. As our body slumps with 

gravity, our throat tissues also begin to 

slacken and relax with the passing of 

time, restricting the air flow through the 

airway, and possibly causing snoring. 

DRINKING ALCOHOL 

If you normally take a glass of wine 

before sleep, you may have to change 

that habit when you’re found to snore in 

bed. Alcohol consumption before sleep 

has shown to relax the throat tissues, 

again causing vibration and the tendency 

to snore. 

Chronic snoring, we all know, is quite 

a pain. Restful sleep is elusive whether 

you’re the one inflicting the damage 

on your partner (though unknowingly) 

or being the victim of endless drones 

at night. Let’s look at some potential 

remedies to nix the snoring in the bud. 

GO NATURAL WITH ESSENTIAL 

OILS 

Proponents of aromatherapy claim 

that essential oils, with their natural 

and therapeutic properties, can help to 

decongest your airway and restrict the 

tissue movement, helping you to breathe 

better. Essential oil blends or concoctions 

are available in the market; these blends, 

comprising oils like cedarwood, lavender, 

peppermint, or geranium among others, 

can be sprayed onto the back of your 

throat, massaged onto parts of your 

body, or diffused into the air in the room 

you sleep. 

ROOM ALLERGENS 

Allergens, such as dust particles in the 

air, dust mites in our bedding, as well as 

household products like air fresheners, 

cream cleansers, or wall paint, can cause 

difficulty in breathing. The inhalation of 

such allergens can result in inflammation 

of the nose lining, causing nasal 

congestion and sneezing and discomfort. 

One way to get rid of allergens is to 

wash and replace your bedding regularly 

or zap the dust mites with a dust mite 

cleaner. Or get an air purifier to ensure 

cleaner air and better health. 

MAINTAIN YOUR SHAPE AND 

WEIGHT 

Exercise helps you to stay in shape, 

keeping the extra fats off your body; 

these translate into a leaner body with 

improved muscle tone all over; thus 

enabling you to breathe better and curb 

snoring. Other lifestyle changes that 

can only enhance your health include 

putting a stop to smoking and alcohol 

consumption especially before bedtime. 

OVER-THE-COUNTER SOLUTIONS 

Sometimes, the air blockage can start 

from the nose rather than at the throat 

or palate. In such cases, nasal strips 

can help to relieve nasal congestion 

and enable you to sleep better at night. 

Basically the adhesive strip works to 

open or lift the nasal passage, allowing 

air to better pass through. 

DOCTOR’S ADVICE 

When all else fails and you find yourself 

at your wits’ end, it’s time to consult a 

doctor. Common treatments can range 

from oral prescriptions to loosen the 

nasal passageway and dental and oral 

devices like mouth guards through to 

traditional surgery; these procedures 

work to open the airway or stiffen 

the palate to curb snoring. Minimally 

invasive surgeries are also available 

such as implants to the soft palate that 

can be done to add support and stiffen 

the palate; the procedure will result in 

reduced tissue vibration; and hence 

reduced snoring.

by Lassen has its roots from some 90 years ago by Danish 

architects Mogens Lassen and his brother Flemming. Some 

of the building contracts they undertook called for creating 

interiors, furniture and accessories to complement the projects. 

The talent for great architecture was already in their blood, and 

in time, their talent for great furniture design and craftsmanship, 

became known as well. 

One of the unique Lassens’ designs is the Kubus candlestick 

that was created in the 1960s. It was probably this iconic design 

that inspired great-granddaugher Nadia Lassen to found design 

company by Lassen together with uncle Søren in 2008 – and to 

acquire the rights to their architect forefathers’ unique designs. 

Nadia was only 23 when she co-started the business. But by 

sheer hard work, passion, on-the-job learning, creativity, and 

armed with great-grandfather Mogens’ sketches, she has grown 

by Lassen into the respected Danish design company it is 

today.

I think so, yes. I feel very, very lucky that I can work with their 

old designs and heritage, and it shows me another perspective. 

Mogens and Flemming Lassen were so talented. Not only did 

they make furniture and accessories they also made houses, 

city halls, libraries and hotel deco. Their designs made me 

realise that it is not just about one nice product. It is about 

space, light and functions as well.

CRAFTSMANSHIP. DO YOU MANUFACTURE YOUR 

PRODUCTS LOCALLY IN DENMARK? 

Yes, we do. We produce the entire Kubus collection at a Danish 

supplier with focus on great craftsmanship. We are so proud 

of our production and the fact that it is not only Danish Design 

but also Made in Denmark, because the quality of the Kubus 

collection is very high. 

WHAT MATERIALS OF NATURE DO YOU LIKE TO WORK 

WITH IN CREATING YOUR PRODUCTS? 

I like to work with honest materials such as wood, steel, copper, 

brass and wool. Plastic will never be my favourite product. I like 

to see when materials get even nicer over time, and with use. 

Our Kubus in copper is, for example, getting green over time, 

and it looks quite amazing. 

ARE THERE STAND-OUT ELEMENTS IN DANISH DESIGN 

– ELEMENTS THAT DIFFERENTIATE YOUR STYLE FROM 

OTHER SCANDINAVIAN DESIGNS? 

Danish and Scandinavian designs are very similar. Danish 

design is the most popular trend in Scandinavia because we 

have a very old design tradition here in Denmark. Many of the 

well-known designers are from Denmark for example Arne 

Jacobsen, Wegner, Poul Kjærholm, Mogens & Flemming Lassen 

etc. Therefore Danish design also affects the Scandinavian 

designs. Danish design is all about simplicity, clean lines, nice 

materials like wood, marble, steel and copper, and very soft and 

pale colours.

IS THE ASIAN MARKET FAMILIAR WITH YOUR 

PRODUCTS AND DESIGNS – AND DO YOU SEE A NEED 

TO MARKET YOUR BRAND FURTHER IN THIS PART OF 

THE WORLD? 

We have been selling by Lassen products to the Asian market 

for around 4 years, but only to very limited shops. Therefore 

I wouldn’t say that the Asian market in general are familiar 

with by Lassen. But I believe that many Asian people who 

love Scandinavian design have seen our products before on 

Pinterest, Instagram and so forth. I definitely see more interest 

from the Asian market over the years, and that is why I also see 

a need to market our brand further here in the future. 

HOW OFTEN DO YOU DESIGN AND CREATE A NEW 

COLLECTION? 

We are always in a design process, and we are working with 

new designs every week. It takes around 12 to 18 months 

to develop a new product, and we have to make many 

adjustments during the process. Sometimes we also have to 

kill some darlings, because it is not possible to manufacture 

the way we want to. But in the end, we launch new collections 

2 to 3 times a year, usually at the Maison & Objet Fair and 

Stockholm Furniture Fair. 

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE A YOUNG DESIGNER 

IN SINGAPORE WHO WANTS TO CREATE HIS OR HER 

OWN LIFESTYLE PRODUCTS AND START A BUSINESS 

LIKE YOURS? 

Keep trying, work hard and believe in your concept. Team up 

with people who are great in managing skills which you don’t 

have, so you can focus on what you like the most – for example 

product design.

The views of Marina Bay Sands and Raffles Place set an 

exhilarating scene for the lounge area. Lead designer Coretta 

Van Wijk from the award winning design firm Asylum, says, 

“This interior is a backdrop that inspires you, makes you feel 

alive and sparks conversation. As you circulate through the 

space, the views are changing all the time, and that is reflective 

of how we want people to be inspired.” 

The hot desk area in the lounge has a cosy library with glass 

cabinets amongst the bookshelves to display members’ 

personal spirits collections, and the adjacent sleek bar opens 

up for service during event nights. The dedicated work area 

boasts a burst of greenery with a mini urban aquaponics 

farm to symbolise growth. The four meeting rooms each 

have smart TVs and / or smart projectors, and feature unique 

design elements such as tropical wallpaper or the signature 

‘dots’ which reflect the collision of ideas. Restrooms feature 

unexpected quirks such as aquariums whilst rotating art works 

and a custom-painted trompe-l’œil mural also add flair and a 

fresh perspective.

Snøhetta to Design Banque Libano 

Francaise’s New Headquarters 

The Norwegian Architecture and Design company wins competition to seal its 

first ever project in Beirut. BY CAROL KRAAL 

Snøhetta’s design for the new general headquarters of 

Banque Libano Francaise (BLF) points towards a new 

future both for the bank and for the city and community 

of which it is a part. The BLF headquarters should 

be recognisable with all its public qualities independently of 

evolving corporate strategies or changing demands on the 

interior spaces. To achieve this, the architectural concept is 

both generic and conceptual at the same time. 

MORE THAN WORK SPACES 

More than just achieving the required number of work spaces, 

the goal is to create a community. The working environment 

is focused around the specific exterior spaces that are carved 

from the built volume. These terraces become the social hubs 

around which the working environment is organised, forming 

the primary organisation for all workspaces.

PUBLIC AND PRIVATE DOMAIN 

The design clearly articulates a public and private domain. The 

public domain forms the foundation of the new headquarters 

building, containing the essential public functions and facilities. 

This public base is connected to the street and surrounding 

urban context. Maintaining a high degree of permeability at 

street level is an essential element for the project, ensuring 

connectivity across the site and with the wider neighbourhood. 

A NEW SUSTAINABLE FIGUREHEAD 

Achieving a development that is sustainable is paramount 

in responding to future user requirements. The parameters 

for sustainability will evolve with the user requirements and 

project specific criteria. The overriding factors will be ensuring: 

Economic Sustainability - the project must be fundamentally 

economically viable; Social Sustainability - the project must 

give back to the city and complement the existing urban 

context; and Environmental Sustainability - the project 

must respond to the environment both in regard to energy 

consumed and with regard the embodied energy of the

Some tips for a mini makeover 


Tired of your living room design but don’t wish to spend 

money on decorating? Perhaps because you’ve just 

renovated your house a few years ago and most of the 

furniture are still relatively new. Most of us, after we’ve 

moved into our renovated home, are so caught up with the 

humdrum of life that we practically just settled in. The design 

and aesthetics have already been done and dealt with, and we 

don’t pay much attention to it anymore. And so we continue to 

carry about our lives until something goes noticeably awry like 

discovering that the coffee table’s chipped off at the leg. Or the 

dining chair’s fabric began to fall out to bits with a mind of its 

own. 

Or maybe the last renovation was ages ago and you’re starting 

to feel bored and wonder if it’s time to relook at how you 

can spruce up your living space. If you have the intention to 

enliven your living space, halt the urge to call the renovator 

or the impulse to select a new piece of sofa furniture. There 

are simple ways we can spruce up the living room on our own 

without the need to spending big bucks. Adding some colours 

or patterns to your home through fabric like dining room 

slipcovers may just brighten up your minimalist home. Or a 

change in furniture placement to enable more walkway space 

may just complement a more comfortable and cosy living. It 

might be also a good way to discover your hidden talent in 

home decorating. 

CREATE AN INVITING ENTRANCE 

Are you a hoarder? Some of us are and we have a habit of 

stashing them in places wherever we can find. We smile 

gleefully at any crack or crevice. For people like us, the utility 

room is often a mess and perpetually filled to the brim; and 

no matter how we try to categorise our hoarded items, we’d 

eventually run out of organisation storage. The entrance or 

foyer is perhaps one of our favourite areas. Used newspapers 

or recycled items for collection are some of the commonly 

found items. 

It is important to clear the entrance and make it as inviting and 

warm as possible. To create an inviting entry to your home, 

whether it’s for yourself when coming back from work or for 

a guest visiting, it’s always good to clear the entrance of any 

unwanted items to create a wide, unobstructed space to walk 

into the house. And since it’s the first thing you see when you 

step in, place something that is warm and pleasant, a memento 

or display item that is mood lifting. A nicely framed photograph 

of a trip you made with your wife or a vase of seashells you 

collected during your dating days is welcoming and warm. 

SECTION YOUR HOME 

Regardless of the size of your house, you can still create 

interesting perspectives and depths by using colours and 

furniture to section up the different areas. Instead of painting 

a whole room including the ceiling in one colour, consider 

painting the various areas in distinct colours. For example, the

area where you’d lounge for late night TV could be painted 

in slate whereas the walls at the dining space painted in 

warm green. If there’re too many colours in a space, consider 

painting in gradient shades; the TV area a darker emerald green 

whereas shades lighter for the dining space. 

MAKE SPACE 

One disadvantage of living here is the tight space we’re 

allocated with (if you live in a HDB). Hence, the way we place 

our furniture (though still restrictive) will still help to ensure 

ample walkway space around the house, without having to 

bump into something else. If you find yourself collecting 

more bruises than normal from daily chores, then consider 

repositioning the affected furniture or get a smaller one for a 

peace of mind and body. 

INTRODUCE PATTERNS AND TEXTURES 

The easiest way to add some perspective or design to your 

home is through patterns. And you can easily do that by 

introducing fabric patterns and textures to your home. For 

example consider adding a couple of floral motif dining chair 

slip covers to give some life to your space. Or change the 

material texture of your curtains for a change of mood. Throw 

an ikat throw onto the sofa for some rugged texture. How 

about the floor? Get a geometric or bold lined rug to create a 

focal point in the room. The walls can also be creatively styled; 

choose a glossy laminate for your feature wall to give shine to 

the space. The advantage is its versatility and cost. Want a new 

design? Change the textures and patterns and see your living 

space morph into something else. 

PURPOSEFUL FURNITURE 

For a small space, consider getting glass or acrylic furniture 

like dining tables and chairs. These will not add to the cramped 

feeling one gets in a small room. And get furniture with dual 

purposes to save on space. 

EVERYDAY OBJECTS 

Experiment with everyday objects for a sense of eclecticism. 

Are you a reader? A stack of books make for a creative coffee 

table; your guest can also easily pick up whatever caught her 

eye for a quick browse. Bring the wooden carved full length 

mirror and prop it against the wall at the living room. Other than 

a display item, it works to widen the perspective of the room as 

well. What about the bathroom mobile cart? Use it for serving 

food from the kitchen or as a coffee table where it can be filled 

with chocolates, snacks, or drinks for guests. 

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN 

Your office may have planters strategically placed throughout 

for the purpose of improving the air quality indoors. Research 

has shown that adding a touch of greenery to the work space 

aids in increased well-being and hence improved performance. 

In the home, we can add big planters for the same purpose. 

If you don’t like indoor plants, you may consider painting the 

house in shades of green and earth to emulate the park or 

garden vibes or buy paintings of landscape and nature to give 

the room a sense of serenity.

The Decadence 

of Sauternes 

This sweet wine from Bordeaux goes so well 

with rich, salty dishes such as foie gras. It also 

goes well with spicy food 

Sweet and sensuous, sauternes is the most expensive 

white wine produced in the region of Bordeaux in 

France. The good ones are extremely expensive 

produced in relatively small vineyards and named after 

its commune or village. 

These sauternes balance sweetness with the right acidity and 

exude a depth of flavour. The Semillon grape contributes to the 

lusciousness of sauternes. 

To make a good sweet wine the grapes must contain a lot of 

sugar so that even after fermentation a lot of fruity richness 

remains. A great helper in achieving this state is a mould called 

botrytis cineria or ‘noble rot’. Although ugly like any other 

mould noble rot is a blessing in disguise. It attacks the grapes 

and, without causing spoilage, shrinks them to concentrate 

their sugar content. It also imbues the wines with impressive 

ageing capacity.

Sauternes goes very well with rich, salty, spicy foods, such 

as cheese, foie Gras and. However, it shines forth with after 

meal delights such as roquefort, tiramisu and strawberries or 

raspberries with sugar and cream. Like any other white wine 

Sauternes is served chilled. 

The sauternes of the region of Sauternes and Barsac are among 

the most famous in the world. 

THE REGION OF SAUTERNES 

The Sauternes region is located 40 kilometres southeast of 

the city of Bordeaux, in the southern end of the Graves wine 

district. Without doubt the best sauternes comes from Château 

d’ Yquem, an estate of only 250 acres. Château d’Yquem is a 

Premier Cru Supérieur (French, ‘Great First Growth’ or ‘Great 

First Vintage’) wine from the Sauternes region in the southern 

part of the Bordeaux vineyards known as Graves. 

In the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, Château 

d’Yquem was the only Sauternes given this rating, indicating 

its superiority and higher prices over all other wines of its 

type. Wines from Château d’Yquem are characterised by 

their complexity, concentration and sweetness. A relatively 

high acidity helps to counteract the sweetness. Another 

characteristic for which Château d’Yquem wines are known are 

their longevity. 

THE REGION OF BARSAC 

Barsac is a small village about 60 kilometres south of Bordeaux. 

The typical Barsac wine has an intense golden colour in 

its youth, which develops into deep amber over years and 

decades. It offers blossom-like aromas and notes of stone fruit 

with a hint of honeysuckle – the trademark of botrytized wines. 

The best wines balance sweetness with acidity, concentration 

with freshness, and power with elegance. 

The wine producers of Barsac have their own Barsac 

appellation, but may also adopt the Sauternes title for 

their wines. Of the five villages that make up the Sauternes 

viticultural area (Sauternes, Barsac, Bommes, Fargues and 

Preignac), only Barsac has this privilege.

The top years for the wines of Sauternes and Barsac are: 2014, 

2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2005, 2003, 2001, 1997, 1996, 

1990, 1989, 1988, 1986, 1983, 1976, 1975, 1967, 1959, 1949, 

1945, 1937, 1929 and 1921 

SERVING SAUTERNES

Temperature - To get the true flavour of sauternes serve 

it below room temperature about 11°C. It may taste 

sickly sweet, if served too warm, or diminish its flavour 

completely, if served chilled. Sauternes that are older than 15 

years, can be served a little warmer. Refrigerate it, but let it sit 

out for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Food - Sauternes is wonderful with foie gras, blue cheese, 

spicy food or roasted nuts. It is recommended to serve it 

at the end of the evening. 

Quantity - This delicate sweet wine should be sipped 

sipped slowly and in small portions. Do not pour more 

than 3 ounces per glass. 

Presentation - Sauternes are served best in special 

sauternes glasses. Otherwise enjoy it in dessert glasses.

Decanting - Decanting older vintages is especially 

important for releasing the wine’s aromas. These wines 

will keep well for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.

Picks Up One Michelin Star 

From a no-frills “coffee shop style” eatery in 2000, the restaurant expanded to 

cater to its overwhelming popularity 

Popular restaurant chain PUTIEN 

was awarded its first Michelin Star 

in Singapore recently on 21 July 

2016. This came right on the heels 

of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 

2016 Bib Gourmand Restaurant Award 

won by PUTIEN (Causeway Bay outlet). 

PUTIEN’s Kitchener Road outlet was 

awarded based on its “quality of 

products”, “mastery of flavour and 

cooking techniques”, “personality of the 

chef in his cuisine”, “value for money” 

and “consistency between visits” 

according to Michelin’s assessment 

criteria. 

The 1-star award to PUTIEN is a hefty 

gastronomic nod and an especially 

meaningful milestone, as Kitchener 

Road was where the brand started and 

sprouted. From a no-frills “coffee shop 

style” eatery in 2000, PUTIEN expanded 

to cater to its overwhelming popularity. 

Today, the Kitchener Road outlet remains 

the restaurant’s flagship outlet among the 

25 outlets across Singapore, Indonesia, 

Malaysia, Hong Kong, Shanghai and 

Taiwan, dishing up the same promise 

since its founding: fresh ingredients, 

good food and heartwarming service. 

Over the years, signature dishes include 

Fried Heng Hwa Bee Hoon, which uses 

handmade bee hoon made with rice flour 

and is painstakingly dried under the sun 

for better texture; the well-loved Braised 

Pig Intestines are traditionally made 

using meticulously selected 12 inch-long 

intestines which are tirelessly washed, 

looped, cooked, extended and braised 

with a 12-spice house sauce. 

Moving forward, Kitchener Road outlet 

will take on the status of the brand’s 

worldwide flagship store, which will 

include impending plans such as an 

aesthetic facelift and create unique dining

done in a sustainable way and all lambs 

are free to roam on family owned farms, 

hand selected by Arcadian Organic 

Meat company. Lambs are also carefully 

raised, free from chemicals, pesticides or 

hormones.

organic beef from Arcadian Organic

elebrity chef Daniel Boulud’s db Bistro & Oyster Bar has 

a refreshed menu showcasing a host of new seafood 

selections, alongside a new cocktail menu. 

With a contemporary culinary style rooted in traditional French 

technique, db Bistro unveiled an extension to the popular 

seafood series to complement db’s classics including the Herb 

Roasted Organic Chicken and the world-famous Original db 

Burger. 

THE RAW BAR 

The restaurant’s oyster bar proudly showcases a fine selection 

of ultra fresh seasonal oysters that are shucked-to-order at the 

raw bar. The restaurant brings in thousands of oysters a week, 

featuring over 30 varieties with a range of five to seven different 

types of oysters served daily, sourced from both the west and 

east coast of the United States, France, Canada, New Zealand 

and Ireland. 

PLATTERS TO SHARE 

The ambience feels more casual with sharing platters including 

the Signature New England Seafood Boils. The seafood platter 

features fresh lobster, mussels and clams, steamed in a fragrant

SEAFOOD SPECIALTIES 

Highlights include Jumbo Lump Crabcakes, filled with five 

varieties of premium Blue crabmeat, celery, sweet peppers, and 

onions before being crumbed and lightly seared in butter. 

Lobster lovers will also enjoy the restaurant’s Lobster Cocktail 

where live Maine lobsters are steamed before being tossed in a 

“bé arnaise aioli” a lighter version of the original sauce inspired 

by the buttery classic, and paired with a fresh combination 

of endive, grapefruit, oranges, pomegranate, hazelnuts and 

tarragon. 

Heartier fare includes the Fried Oyster Slider. Seasonal oysters 

are cornmeal battered, fried, sandwiched between brioche buns 

and paired with a brussel sprout coleslaw and tartar sauce to 

perfectly pair with the new fresh Menabrea draft beer.

The revamped cocktail menu sees lighter, refreshing cocktails
