Americans United for Life

OVERVIEW
AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE (AUL)
Americans United for Life (www.aul.org) is a pro-life organization established in 1971 – two years before the US Supreme Court
created a universal right to abortion on demand. Our mission is to secure a comprehensive legal foundation for the protection of
human life from conception onward in order to reduce the number of abortions in the United States. We are the legal architect of
the pro-life movement. We are accumulating victories, building momentum, and advancing a culture of life in America.
LEGAL AND POLICY ISSUES ON WHICH AUL WORKS NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY INCLUDE:
ABORTION: AUL develops and promotes laws
that value the life of the infant in the womb, and
that protect the health and welfare of the mother
and infant. We also fight to retain the Hyde
Amendment, which ensures that no tax dollars
will pay for abortions.
LEGAL RECOGNITION AND PROTECTION FOR
THE UNBORN: In contexts outside of abortion,
AUL continues its strategy of focusing on the
humanity of the unborn child through laws such
as unborn victims of violence protections and
wrongful death causes of action.
BIOETHICS AND BIOTECHNOLOGIES: AUL leads
a multi-pronged strategy to address emerging
21st century concerns, including human cloning,
destructive embryo research, and medicallyappropriate
regulation of assisted reproductive
technologies.
END-OF-LIFE ISSUES: AUL continues its deep
and long-standing expertise in expertise in legal
issues surrounding euthanasia, assisted suicide,
pain management, and palliative care.
HEALTH CARE FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE:
AUL provides key resources and support against
measures that threaten to force physicians,
pharmacists, and other medical professionals to
either provide goods or perform services to which
they are conscientiously opposed, or to leave the
professions to which they have dedicated their
lives.
AUL’s work reaches from state legislatures to Capitol Hill and from American courtrooms to international tribunals.
The organization promotes life-affirming laws and policies aimed at restoring a culture of life in the United States and
throughout the world.

HISTORY
A BRIEF HISTORY OF AUL
In response to a 1971 court decision striking down a Texas law restricting abortion, a diverse group of lawyers, professors,
physicians and clergy formed the oldest national pro-life organization, Americans United for Life. Volunteer attorneys quickly filed
briefs in abortion cases springing up around the country.
“I think AUL has become the premier prolife
organization in the country. I think their
approach has been far more objective, a
great deal more thoughtful. They’re working
not toward just raising an issue, but also
toward changing minds and hearts, engaging
people in honest, thoughtful discussion as to
why every life matters.” -Gov. Mike Huckabee
new ideas on how to develop, enact, and defend pro-life laws in their state.
Just two years later, the Supreme Court created a national policy of abortion on demand
- throughout all nine months of pregnancy - in its 1973 Roe v. Wade decisions. The
Court’s exercise of “raw judicial power” opened the door to a floodgate of state legislative
responses, many of which were challenged in court. AUL’s track record of appearing in
every Supreme Court case involving abortion continues unbroken.
Americans United for Life is engaged primarily in pro-life advocacy. AUL has developed
and promoted model legislation state lawmakers use as guides to enact life-respecting
laws in their states. AUL has assembled Defending Life, an invaluable reference
compendium of life-related laws throughout the United States. Legislators and pro-life
advocates use this compendium to compare laws in their state to other states, and to gain
AUL files amicus briefs in important court cases and testifies before Congress on proposed legislation and Supreme Court nominees.
AUL is the recognized thought-leader and legal architect of the pro-life movement.
The caliber of people who founded and have sustained AUL through the decades made these accomplishments possible. AUL’s
founders, a diverse group reflecting a wide variety of vocations and religious affiliations, were united by the conviction that the
legalization of abortion was not only an affront to their own deeply-held beliefs, but also to the founding principles of the nation.
Many notable men and women have sustained this conviction through the decades. Eminent Chicago attorney Dennis J. Horan
established AUL as the legal arm of the pro-life movement, and served as Board chairman for 15 years. Northwestern law professor
Victor G. Rosenblum led AUL’s successful defense of the Hyde Amendment and mentored a generation of pro-life lawyers. Their
close colleague, Boston physician Joseph R. Stanton created the first archive of pro-life scholarship, now housed with the Sisters
for Life in New York City. Mildred Jefferson, M.D., and Erma Clardy Craven, MSW, were early AUL leaders demonstrating the
devastating impact of abortion on underprivileged and minority communities. C. Everett Koop, M.D., helped lead AUL’s fight against
lethal medical neglect of disabled infants. Congressmen Henry J. Hyde and Christopher Smith both served on AUL’s Board and
helped advance its legislative agenda. Religious intellectuals such as George Hunton Williams, George Weigel, and Richard John
Neuhaus demonstrated that a wide array of religious convictions can sustain AUL’s founding conviction and its prudential approach
to legislation and other legal initiatives.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
45 YEARS OF PRO-LIFE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
As the legal architect of the pro-life movement, AUL has consistently accumulated victories, built momentum, and advanced a culture of
life in America. A few key accomplishments stand out as representative of AUL’s unique contributions to pro-life successes across the
country and in Washington, D.C.
1. WINNING THE HYDE AMENDMENT CASE BEFORE
THE U.S. SUPREME COURT.
In 1980, Americans United for Life won a historic victory
for pro-life America when we successfully defended the
Hyde Amendment in Harris v. McRae in the U.S. Supreme
Court. This important court decision upheld federal and
state prohibitions on public funding of abortion (with rare
exceptions).
2. ESTABLISHING FETAL HOMICIDE LAWS IN 38
STATES.
A fetal homicide law recognizes an unborn child as a
potential victim of criminal violence. AUL’s legal experts
laid the intellectual groundwork to enact fetal homicide
laws nationwide. At the time of the Roe decision in 1973,
only three states enforced these protective laws. Today,
38 states have fetal homicide laws in place, and 29 of
these laws protect the unborn child from the moment of
conception.
3. DEFENDING LIFE IN THE LAW, REDUCING
ABORTIONS STATE BY STATE.
AUL is the pioneer of the state-based model legislative
strategy which has exploded in the past few years. AUL’s
strategy is a mother-child approach that looks at the
interests and vulnerabilities of both mother AND child,
protecting them both from abortion industry abuses. AUL
first drafted legislation for Illinois as early as 1974, but
expanded the state-based strategy nationwide in 1989 after
the Supreme Court’s decision in Webster v. Reproductive
Health Services.
4. CREATING AND DISTRIBUTING DEFENDING LIFE,
“THE PRO-LIFE PLAYBOOK.”
In 2005, AUL published the first edition of Defending Life,
which has been called “The Pro-Life Playbook,” giving
legislators and pro-life leaders the legal and policy tools
they need to protect life in law. Working in all 50 states
with governors, legislators, and pro-life leaders, AUL has
developed and maintains the nation’s most comprehensive
catalogue of cutting-edge, life-affirming legislation, which is
featured annually in Defending Life.
AUL’s long record of publications demonstrates its
intellectual leadership in the pro-life cause. The
anthologies Abortion and Social Justice (1972), Death,
Dying & Euthanasia (1976), and New Perspectives on
Human Abortion (1980) addressed life issues from a
comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach. Infanticide
and the Handicapped Newborn (1982) made a compelling
case against the lethal medical neglect of infants
with disabilities, leading to enactment of Federal laws
and regulations halting the practice. Abortion and the
Constitution (1987) documented the numerous medical,
historical, and legal errors in Roe v. Wade and subsequent
Supreme Court abortion decisions, and drew a roadmap for
their reversal. Abuse of Discretion (2013), by AUL Senior
Counsel Clarke D. Forsythe, is a masterful examination,
based on the papers of the Justices themselves, of how
Roe v. Wade was decided and drafted.
In addition to these books, AUL leaders, staff, and Board
members have written dozens of scholarly articles on life
issues. AUL’s Board of Advisors includes scholars with
international reputations in law, medicine, bioethics, and
other disciplines who publish in multiple peer-reviewed
journals and for major academic and trade presses.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
45 YEARS OF PRO-LIFE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
5. PROTECTING LIFE OVERSEAS, WITH IMPLICATIONS
HERE AT HOME.
AUL provided life-affirming language pro-life advocates
in Ireland used to amend the Irish Constitution in 1979. It
requires the equal protection of unborn human life and the
life of the mother, making Ireland one of the strongest pro-life
nations in Europe. In 2012, AUL published a groundbreaking
study of pro-life laws in Latin America, Defending the Human
Right to Life in Latin America that documents the pro-life
laws, policies and preferences of the vast majority of Latin
Americans.
6. TESTIFYING IN SENATE CONFIRMATION HEARINGS
FOR U.S. SUPREME COURT NOMINEES.
As the nation’s oldest, national pro-life organization, AUL’s
leadership on pro-life law and policy and its reputation
as a thoughtful pro-life advocate has been recognized by
members of the Senate Judiciary Committee when AUL was
asked to address pro-life concerns in confirmation hearings
for Supreme Court nominees.
7. DEVELOPING THE GROUNDBREAKING “THE CASE
FOR INVESTIGATING PLANNED PARENTHOOD” (2011).
In July of 2011, AUL released an explosive exposé, The Case
for Investigating Planned Parenthood, which documents
known and alleged abuses including misuse of federal
healthcare and family planning funds, failure to report
criminal child sexual abuse, failure to comply with parental
involvement laws, willingness to assist those involved in
prostitution and/or sex trafficking, dangerous abuse of the
abortion drug RU-486, misinformation about “emergency
contraception,” including the new drug ella®, willingness
to give women deceptive and false information, and a
willingness to refer women to substandard clinics.
In 2012, AUL released The Planned Parenthood Exhibits:
The Continuing Case For Investigating the Nation’s Largest
Abortion Provider and, along with pro-life members of
Congress and other allies, provoked an unprecedented
Congressional investigation of the abortion giant.
8. FIGHTING FOR LIFE IN THE COURTS.
Since 1972, AUL has participated in more than 100 federal
and state lawsuits tried in courts across the country and
internationally, including every significant abortion-related
case before the Supreme Court. AUL has filed more amicus
curiae (or “friend of the court”) briefs than any other prolife
organization, further solidifying its position as the legal
architect of the pro-life movement.
9. FIGHTING FOR LIFE IN THE STATES.
AUL remains the leading advocate for state laws protecting
human life from conception until natural death. For example,
since 2011, AUL has been involved in the passage of more
than 60 pro-life state laws. This is nearly one-third of all such
laws enacted over the past three years, more than any other
organization we know of.
10. LEADING IN THE FIGHT AGAINST PHYSICIAN-
ASSISTED SUICIDE.
AUL successfully defended in state courts and before the
U.S. Supreme Court (Cruzan v. Missouri, 1990), the claim
that there is no constitutional “right to die.” AUL attorneys also
published a critical law review article, Suicide: A Constitutional
Right?, cited prominently by the U.S. Supreme Court when
it unanimously rejected the claim of a constitutional right to
assisted suicide in 1997.
THE POSITION
CEO - AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE
The Board of Directors is seeking a new CEO who will build on its peerless history and lead AUL into the future. The CEO will exercise
overall leadership for AUL, and report to and be accountable to the Board of Directors.
The primary goals for which the CEO will be accountable are:
Reduce abortion by continuing and improving existing initiatives while creating and implementing new ones. Some existing initiatives
include:
• Targeted, creative, and effective state regulations
• Federal healthcare and abortion policy
• Highlighting the abuses in the abortion industry
• Addressing the harms of abortion within our culture
Grow internal and external consensus around legal strategy to reduce abortion.
Develop a general marketing strategy (including broad-based and/or targeted components) to support our legislative initiatives and
to raise funds.
Undermine and diminish public acceptance of abortion by raising public awareness about its harm to women specifically, and to the
broader culture.
Vigorously oppose the mainstreaming of abortion in American healthcare.

STRUCTURE
THE MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE OF AUL
Under the proposed future structure, the CEO will lead an Executive Team of three members: A Chief Legal Officer, Chief Marketing
Officer, and a Director of Administration. An Administrative Assistant will support the CEO.
AA
CEO
CLO CMO Dir of Admin
The Legal division, led by the CLO, will continue to focus on state laws and the courts. It will continue to develop and promote laws
which will curtail abortion and aid in the defense of those laws when they are challenged in court. This is AUL’s strongest area. The
staff is competent and experienced, without equal in the pro-life space. Their accomplishments are numerous, yet the challenges to
achieving AUL’s goals remain, and constantly change.
The Marketing division, led by the CMO, will focus on two goals: 1) persuading the public that ending abortion is a good thing, and 2)
raising money to fund the organization. This division currently consists of a Communications Expert, a Database Administrator, and
a Web Designer (marketing/fundraising emails). The CEO will begin a formal search for a CMO shortly after the CEO’s hiring. The
importance of this division cannot be overstated: 1) AUL’s efforts in legislatures and courts require sustainable grass-roots support; 2)
the viability of the organization as a whole requires sustainable funding.
The Operations division, led by the Director of Administration, will focus on the efficient and cost-effective daily operation of the
organization. HR, Finance, general office management will serve under the Director of Administration who reports to the CEO.
The CEO will lead the Executive Team in developing the strategies for achieving the goals the Board has established, in identifying
the tactics for implementing those strategies, and in monitoring and measuring the results and making any necessary adjustments.
The CEO is ex officio on these Board committees: Executive, Legal, Marketing, and Finance. Subcommittees meet regularly to support
the CEO and the leader of each division, to discuss and assess strategies and tactics, and to provide other support and advice. The
CEO will conduct an annual performance evaluation of Executive Team members; Executive Team members will conduct annual
performance evaluations of their direct reports. The Board of Directors will conduct the annual performance evaluation of the CEO.

QUALIFICATIONS
KEY QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION
INFLUENTIAL THINKER: The CEO is a person who has thought deeply and extensively about AUL’s core issues, can articulate a
compelling defense of human life, and can attract support and agreement from a wide variety of audiences. In addition to passion,
he or she will preferably have experience defending human life through law and can oversee and contribute to a compelling legal
strategy.
STRATEGIC PLANNING EXPERTISE: In consultation with the Board, the CEO will establish 1-, 3-, and 5-year goals. To accomplish
those goals, the CEO will develop strategic plans, through deep and focused collaboration with the Executive Team. The steady,
measurable progress toward accomplishing these goals will be the standard for the CEO’s annual review.
TEAM BUILDING ABILITY: The ideal CEO will develop a sense of ‘team’ within the staff of AUL beyond the Executive Team.
Information silos should be discouraged; cross-sharing of information and goals, methods and means, what is working and what
isn’t, should be a focus of internal communication and the inner workings of the organization.
COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS: The ideal CEO will be a likable, articulate, knowledgeable, joyful and upbeat
proponent of the pro-life movement and AUL. The CEO will create a similar culture among the team, equipping others as
appealing representatives of AUL in public. AUL will not be known only by its CEO, but by the many faces and voices of the team
with a deep bench of expertise. The CEO will represent AUL well under pressure; the ability to connect with audiences large and
small, in person or on TV and other media is crucial.
ABILITY TO PRIORITIZE, DELEGATE, AND MANAGE CRISES: Although the pro-life movement has been under assault since
its beginning, external forces threaten its survival. Whether in Washington, DC, in state capitols, at the bench, or under media
scrutiny, a sense of perpetual crisis could overwhelm AUL’s ability to keep its eye on the target. The ideal CEO will absorb chaos,
project calm, and renew hope. The CEO will focus on the goals, carefully prioritizing time and energy, delegating immediate crises
management whenever possible. The main goals are the main goals.
A DESIRE TO COLLABORATE WITH OTHER PRO-LIFE ORGANIZATIONS: The pro-life community is large and multi-faceted. No
one organization can accomplish everything, nor should try to do so. Pro-life organizations compete with each other for donors.
However, AUL’s CEO will work toward unity with other pro-life organizations, and look for areas to collaborate and coordinate
efforts so as to magnify the effectiveness of each -- and the movement in general -- toward the common objective of the protection
of human life.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Preferred Candidates will be able to demonstrate most of the following:
• working legal and medical knowledge of pro-life issues
• proven results in the marketing and/or fundraising arena
• demonstrable, deep commitment to the pro-life cause over the course of his/her lifetime and career
• bachelor’s degree minimum, advanced degree preferred. JD is strongly preferred, but not required
• C-level or equivalent experience with another organization in Legal, Marketing, Development or as CEO
• experience with tax-exempt organizations
• prior P&L responsibility and experience
• connections and networks within the pro-life community

LOCATION
LOCATION/TRAVEL OF THE CEO
The CEO is expected to reside in the vicinity of Washington D.C. and will generally be present in the AUL office when not
traveling for fundraising or outreach. The CEO sets the tone for the office culture: collegial, professional, positive. The CEO
needs to be a servant leader, seeking the best for each team member, mentoring and growing as many as possible in their
careers in service to the overall mission of AUL.
While the CEO role of AUL may not be the last stop in the successful candidate’s career, it is expected that a CEO will make
at least a five-year commitment to AUL.
The full Board of Directors meets at least twice per year, not always in Washington, at the discretion of the Chairman of the
Board. The CEO will present a full report to the Board of Directors at those meetings and receive counsel, advice, direction,
and support from the Board.
As with most senior leadership positions, especially those with a mission as serious and important as defending life, being
AUL’s CEO is not a 40 hours per week commitment. Additionally, travel obligations could well be substantial, as the CEO will
meet with donors, lawmakers, other thought-leaders, and the media.
