John’s Jottings
Good evening everyone. Welcome to Woodstock Park for this Kent Reliance Kent Senior Cup tie.
Our visitors for the third time in three weeks are Ramsgate. Welcome to Jim and Danny and Ramsgate’s
Players, Officials and supporters.
The winners of tonight’s tie play either Ebbsfleet United or Sheppey United at home in the next
round. There is no extra time tonight. If the match is drawn after 90 minutes it will be decided on
kicks from the penalty spot.
Last Tuesdays match at home to Ramsgate saw a really good attacking display from the Brickies.
Probably one of the best displays of the season. Goals from Danny Rumbol, Tom Carlse, Jono
Richardson and Joss Wisson was enough to put Sittingbourne in tenth place in the League. One of
the problems with doing well and playing attractive football is that other teams start noticing your
players. Both Ben Bridle-Card and Miles Cornwell have been the subject of seven day approaches.
Ben from Faversham Town and Miles from Folkestone Invicta.
On Saturday our good form against Ramsgate was unfortunately not continued at East Grinstead
Town. East Grinstead started the season of poorly but have really picked up recently. This one must
be put down as “a bad day at the office” as East Grinstead played better than us and deserved their
win. Ramsgate soon shrugged of their defeat by us and achieved one of their best results of the
season with a 5-2 win over Whyteleafe. Ton Chapman scored two goals, Tom Loynes one. Ollie
Gray and Jake Mackenzie scoring the others.
Today Stefan Wright and Jack Steventon are suspended after picking up five yellow cards each this
season.
Also on Saturday our Development side played Sevenoaks Town Under 21’s at Woodstock in the
Kent Intermediate cup. Because of a family commitment I was unable to get to East Grinstead so
went along to watch this match. Sittingbourne had to play a weakened development side as the
rules for this competition preclude any player that has featured in the last three first team games
from playing. This was a really entertaining game. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the
play. The first half was fairly even but Sittingbourne stepped up a gear after the break and won the
tie 1-0. If it wasn’t for the “veteran” goalkeeper in the Sevenoaks goal it would have been a lot more
for Sittingbourne. There was also a “Veteran” goalkeeper in The Brickies goal, Simon Overland continuing
his recovery from injury by playing in this fixture. The Development side really are worth
watching. They play on a Wednesday night here in the Ryman development League. The development
side play Sutton Athletic Reserves away in the next round of the KIC. Our table topping side
are playing tonight at Tooting & Mitcham endeavouring to keep their unbeaten record. On Thursday
13 th October they visit Ramsgate. Their next home game is on Wednesday 19 th October when they
play Three Bridges.
I am saddened to report the death of one of our long serving and staunch supporters, Mick Heath.
Mick went out of his way to help the club. He arranged the printing of our programme a few years
ago at a very cheap rate. He will be sorely missed. Sittingbourne Football Club send it’s condolences
to his family.
On Saturday we have the most important match of our season now that we went out of the FA Cup
so early. We play Bury Town here in the FA Trophy. Bury are doing very well in their league (Ryman
North) and we will have to be at our best to beat them. We really do need your support so please
come along and bring a friend (or two).
JOHN

From the Programme Editor
Hello Everybody.
This is a Ramsgate special programme this time as it not only contains the usual programme
stuff but also a full breakdown of our games against the Rams since we joined the Ryman
league and also a cartoon taken from a pre-season copy of the Sun newspaper some years
back that mentions both ourselves and the Rams!
Its October and one anniversary is that of Arsene Wenger who has now been 20 years at Arsenal.
Just before he officially took over as manager he was at our friendly with Arsenal played on
Saturday 2nd August 1997.
My report at the time included “The Arsenal team, containing at least 6 of the team who played
against Strasbourg a couple of weeks ago, plus Tony Adams and Nigel Winterburne, ran out
winners by 5 goals to 2. This was a good game for a "friendly" and the crowd of 3,349 saw Sittingbourne
play well at times whilst a number of Arsenal players who are on the fringe of the first
team were anxious to impress Manager Arsene
Wenger who was watching proceedings from the Directors
box in the now fully opened impressive main
stand.
Nicholas Annelka (What ever happened to him!) and
Tony Adams featured. Adams having just come back
from injury. In his autobiography “Addicted”. When discussing
his alcohol dependency he wrote “ “Soon after
I was playing for the reserves at Sittingbourne and one
of their players nutmegged me. I was furious at this
lack of respect, as I saw it. “Don’t mess with me. I’ve
got 50 caps and you earn 50 quid a week, I told him.
Then I took him out, about chest high but the ref let me
off , probably because of who I was. (the ref was our
own vice president and committee member Alan
Barty!!) It was frightening, like road rage . I could try
and be calm but then it would all explode in one moment.
And I thought I was not an angry man . But I can
see now that my anger was like water, it had to come
to the surface before it could evaporate.” I don’t actually
remember the incident! (ed).
So you can see that Sittingbourne FC set Tony Adams
on the way to a cure!
I know that many of you are missing the full website
archive. Fear not for I still have them and when time permits they will slowly be put back on line.
It will however be a long job as each address must be changed. In the meantime its worth having
a look at the old web site that can be found at www.kentmcl.co.uk/main.htm and accessing
the archive from the drop down menu as many of the later links still work. I also hope to have
the search engine on that site back up and working soon.
Don’t forget to come along this Saturday to support the lads in the FA Trophy against a very
good Bury Town.
Peter

Ryman League Div 1 South
Sittingbourne 4 Ramsgate 0, att 112
Match Reports
This was a thorough demolition of a poor Ramsgate
side as the Brickies bounce back ability
was once again on show as they put the defeat
at the hands of Lewes firmly behind them.
They scored 4 but it could easily have been
more whilst the Rams seemed to lack passion
in a month that results wise hasn’t been kind to
them.
Goals at the beginning of each half meant that it
was always an uphill struggle for the Rams
against a side that must definitely be considered
to be their bogey side. This result echoed
last season’s home tie and Ramsgate last beat
the Brickies over 3 years ago and since then
the goals tally is 27 for the Brickies and 7 for the
Rams. But because of the Brickies tendency to
concede leads this year most of the Brickies
fans were only content when the third goal went
in!
A lightening start then for Sittingbourne when
inside 4 minutes Danny Rumbol found the net
following an in swinging Conrad lee free kick.
From then on the Brickies took control much to
the delight of most of the crowd. There was a
great atmosphere which I’m sure transferred to
the Sittingbourne players who were playing
some excellent pacey football.
Stefan Wright was his usual action man self and
on 13 minutes he set up a good chance for new
signing Ricky Gundry but the ball seemed to
stick under his foot and the ball trickled wide of
the Rams goal. Jono Richardson, relishing the
captain role despite being kept awake at night
by his new son! Was next to have a go with a
shot that went wide.
The Rams first shot of goal had to wait until almost
the half hour when Tom Chapman’s firm
effort was well held by Ben Bridle-Card. Two
more chances fell to the Brickies before half
time, the first to Jack Steventon who headed
Danny Rumbol’s cross wide and the second to
Miles Cornwell after good play from Tom Carlse
who was causing the Rams problems all night.
The second half was less than two minutes old
when Carlse scored the Brickies second with a
shot that bounced in off the bottom of the cross
bar.
Ricky Gundry is looking to be a good acquisition
for the Brickies and his low hard cross eluded a
host of Brickies players in the Rams area.
A feature of this game that wasn’t always apparent
in earlier games was that there was no
thought of holding on to what they had for the
Brickies and they continued to pile forward with
the Rams having no answer to the darting runs.
The Rams made a double substitution that included
bringing on ex Brickie Tom Loynes, but
the changes made no perceptible difference.
Another excellent chance fell to the Brickies
from a corner but Rumbold couldn’t quite get
enough height and he headed over the bar from
point blank range.
The chances kept on coming and Richardson
found Lee whose power shot was well turned
over by the Rams keeper Luke Watkins.
A rare Rams effort ended in Loynes 63 rd minute
shot deflected by Richardson to safety. This
was the best period for the Rams and only a
great saving tackle from Lee prevented a goal.
But the Brickies quickly snatched the initiative
again and Miles Cornwell rounded two defenders
before his shot was blocked.
The third goal came on 74 minutes when Richardson
stabbed the ball home from a corner,
and the demolition was complete with 6 minutes
to go when a fine run from Josh Wisson ended
in him turning the ball in the goal from an acute
angle.
The Rams almost scored a consolation goal
right on time but Niall Salisbury’s lob bounced
off the top of the bar.
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 1st October 2016
Ryman League Div 1 South
East Grinstead Town 2 Sittingbourne 1, att 96
Sittingbourne failed to score in a league game for the first time this season and that just about
sums up a disappointing afternoon to forget for them.
The lesson, of course, is that it’s no good thrashing Ramsgate 4-0 in midweek if you lose the Saturday
before and the Saturday after to teams below you in the league.
It took two excellent pieces of individual skill to get the goals that beat them but on this occasion
Sittingbourne, though they never stopped pushing forward, were second best.
East Grinstead are on a good confidence-boosting run after a terrible start to the season and had
done their homework thoroughly – they man-marked Miles Cornwell to stop his trademark runs,
and blotted out the considerable threat of Jono Richardson when he went up for attacking
set-pieces.
On an afternoon of sunshine and showers, Sittingbourne intended to keep the same team that
beat Ramsgate but full-back Sam Welch failed a fitness test before the game and had to drop
out.
The first half-hour was pretty even with East Grinstead putting three headed chances over the
bar and Stefan Wright and Tom Brunt shooting just too high at the other end.
The home side took the lead with a great bit of individual skill by McIntyre, dribbling down the left
and cutting in before playing it in to the near post where Emptage squeezed the ball in.
Sittingbourne began to get on top but the chances went begging with Tom Carlse driving a good
chance straight at the keeper and Wright’s powerful shot going through the keeper’s hands but
over the bar as well.
Sittingbourne went into this match in the top ten of the league but were generally failing to impose
themselves on the game, and it took an excellent goalline save by Conrad Lee to keep it at
1-0 right at the start of the second half.
East Grinstead clinched the points on 72 minutes when leggy sub Kwayie collected his keeper’s
clearance on the halfway line and raced forward before beating Ben Bridle-Card with a terrific
shot to cap a superb goal.
Sittingbourne continued to drive forward, though perhaps with less conviction than in previous
games, but sub Connor Wilkins missed the best chance when he fired just wide with the keeper
rooted to his line.
Sittingbourne did the double over East Grinstead last season but this time came up against a
lively hard-working group of youngsters who on the day deserved their win.
Sittingbourne: Ben Bridle-Card, Tom Brunt, Conrad Lee, Danny Rumbol (Yellow card),
Jono Richardson (Yellow card), Jack Steventon (Connor Wilkins, 75 min), Hicham
Akhazzan (Josh Wisson, 57 min), Stefan Wright, Ricky Gundry (Ola Rabiu, 72 min),
Miles Cornwell, Tom Carlse. Sub not used: Dan Tanner.
