Arequipa - AÑASHUAYCO QUARRY
Duration: 2 hrs approx.
Suggested time of departure:8:30 am
Añashuayco quarry, is the place where
the iconic sillar is extracted; the white
volcanic stone that is used in many
colonial buildings around Arequipa. The
quarry is located in the like-named valley
at about 2120 m.a.s.l. within the district
of Uchumayo, and by car about 15
minutes away from Arequipa.
Description: On the beginning our guide
will explain the origin and geological
formation of the quarries and we will have
the chance to observe the extraction of
sillar. Also we will learn about the
importance of sillar for the Arequipeñan
buildings and culture, and why it has been
used to construct most of the older parts
of the city. We will have an opportunity to
talk with the workers who carry out this
tough work.
To reach this place we’ll cross popular
Arequipa’s neighbourhoods, where your
guide will also give you some insight to the
social and in-migration problems of our
city.
Arequipa – Tour “GET INVOLVED”
(Reality)
Duration: 04hrs.
Departure time: 09 a.m.
Pick up at your hotel and the first stop is the local
San Camilo market, Apart from being Arequipa’s
main supply center; here with the help of your
guide you can purchase products and supplies that
we’ll later share with the children we visit.
We suggest you buy school supplies, food, and
toys. (No candy or chocolate please).
After the San Camilo market, we will visit a Daycare
center (organized by the Catholic church),
which runs mostly on donations and takes care of
underprivileged children of the area, aged 2 to 5.
The daycare center offers meals, medical
attention, and preschool education; this is largely
thanks to the good people who support it. We
share with the children the products that were
purchased at the San Camilo market. This is a
wonderful experience for visitors and we
encourage you to interact with the kids.
On our tour, we will also visit also some
comedores populares, small eating establishments
that provide breakfast, lunch and dinner to locals
on a limited income. These “comedores” are
maintained thanks to the hard work of the Club de
Madres, an association of women that actively
participates in the upkeep and running of the
Comedores. We head back to Arequipa City,
visiting en route the Yanahuara lookout, where
you have a nice view of Arequipa’s three wellknown
volcanoes.
