TRAVEL INFORMATION
As you travel between different hotels, and
you will have to handle your own baggage,
please try to travel reasonably light. You
should be able to lift and carry your own
luggage. At some hotels, the coach may
have to stop some distance short of the
hotel entrance.
Also, within some of the hotels there may be
some long walks between the rooms and
lobby area, which may include steps. Due to
baggage restrictions on flights within Peru,
your luggage should be kept to a maximum
of 20kg (44lbs)
Here you will find some information
related to Peru. If you do not find the
answer to your specific question, please
contact us directly.
PASSPORT
Your passport is often required when checking into
hotels and when changing money, so carry it with you
on these occasions. It is also an excellent idea to
memorise your passport number for the form filling. It
is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal
details pages of your passport. Should you lose your
passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement
documents in your embassy.
CURRENCY
The currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol. The Peruvian
Sol not widely available outside Peru
US$ cash is easiest to change. It is also a good idea to
have some US$ cash for emergencies. However, it is
now possible to rely on ATM machines (offering Sols or
US Dollars) which exist in all the major cities we visit.
Most of our hotels accept credit cards some of then
with a extra charge of 5%
CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT
We recommend that you to pack your clothing and
equipment in a strong suitcase or holdall
and take a small rucksack to carry those items you will
need during the day. We also recommend you take a
waterproof jacket, trousers, some long-sleeved shirts,
warm fleece together with thin jumpers, woollen socks,
shorts and lighter summer clothes, swimwear and a
towel. The secret, by the way, is layering. Peel off
during the warm day, and layer on for cool nights. Here
some examples on what you can bring with you.
If you visit the Jungle
Sandals with straps (You’ll be given rubber boots at the
lodge.). Comfortable walking shoes/hiking boots
(nothing that you wouldn’t want to get muddy!)
Loose long-sleeved tops and long pants. Hat with
netting. Poncho. Insect repellent. Flashlight.
If you visit Machu Picchu
Hiking boots. Fleece . Poncho (December through
February).
In you take the Inca Trail
Sleeping bag (you can also rent one in Cusco).
Headlamp. Comfortable hiking shoes. Documents:
Bring your passport. These documents will be
requested at the entrance to the Inca Trail so make
sure to carry them with you in order to avoid any
problems.
The voltage in Peru is 220V. Some of your electronics
may be able to take up to 220V; just look at the label
on the charger. If not, you might want to carry an
adapter/converter with you. There is no electricity in
the Jungle lodges after eight or ten o’clock each night
when they turn off the generator.

HEALTH & FITNESS
Drinking or cleaning teeth in unboiled water is not
recommended. Drinking only bottled water is a good
idea. You'll find many brands in supermarkets or in little
stores called bodegas. Common brands are Cielo, San
Antonio, San Luis, and Fresh (lemon infused water).
There are two types of water you can buy: sin gas
meaning un-carbonated, “normal” water, and con gas
which is carbonated.
Important note: Peruvian tap water is not potable,
should not be ingested directly from the tap.
Be careful with what you eat to avoid upset stomachs
and stay away from unpeeled fruit, salads and do not
have ice in your drinks. Hot, fresh cooked food, where
possible, is best.
You should also be aware of issues associated with
travelling at high altitudes. The lower atmospheric
pressure at higher altitudes results in less oxygen
finding its way into the blood. Problems usually start
for most people at around 2,500 to 3,000 metres. If
you reach this altitude gradually the body can
accustom itself to having less oxygen, and you are less
likely to have problems. It is important on arrival at
destinations at this kind of altitude to rest for a few
hours and not to over-exert yourself in the first day or
two, as over-exertion can make altitude problems
more likely. Local people also swear by coca leaf tea,
which you will probably be offered on arrival, as a
means of preventing or treating altitude problems. It is
harmless and if you drink plenty of it, it will at least help
you to avoid dehydration, something else that makes
altitude problems more likely, so drink plenty of fluids
(not alcohol!) at these high altitude destinations.
Anybody who has a medical condition affecting blood
circulation or breathing or has any other worries
should consult their doctor before departure.
Note: Bathrooms in Peru often have the telltale stick
figures on the door. If they do not, look for Damas or
Mujeres for women, and Caballeros or Hombres for
men. Also, SS.HH indicates a restroom. You may
sometimes be asked a pay a small charge for using
public restrooms.
PERSONAL SAFETY
Please take sensible precautions like leaving your credit
cards and passport in the hotel safe
and avoiding displays of wealth such as wearing
expensive jewellery or watches. Do not carry more
cash on you than you need for each day.
RAINY SEASON IN THE HIGH LANDS
AND THE JUNGLE:
The rainy season in Peru starts in December and
continues until March. On the coast, the weather is
arid with a warm summer from late December through
March. A mist known as garúa covers the central and
southern coastal provinces for the majority of the rest
of the year. During the dry season it will be warm in
the jungle, while it may be hot during the day and very
cold at night in the other high regions such as Cusco,
Arequipa, and Puno. Lima, Nazca, and Paracas are in
between the two

pisco and paracas
Pisco is the famous name of the Peruvian
brandy produced from white muscat
grapes in this region and also the name of
this interesting city. It is located 235km
south of Lima and is a very important
port that generally is used as a base to see
the abundant wildlife of the Islas Ballestas
and Península de Paracas.
This area is rich of historical and
archaeological remains, having hosted
one of the most highly developed pre-
Inca Civilizations – the Paracas culture
from 900 BC until AD 200, after which
the nearby town of Paracas is named.
nazca
It’s no possible to say the word ‘Nazca’ without following it immediately with the word “figures or lines" but
no only for the ancient geometric lines that crisscross the Nazca desert, but also for the enigmatic animal
geoglyphs that accompany them. Like all great unexplained mysteries, these great work on the pampa of
Nazca, thought to have been made by a pre-Inca civilization between 450–600 AD, attract a variable fan
base of archaeologists, scientists, New Age mystics, curious tourists, Peruvians discovers; etc. Who and for
what reason these great geoglyphs were made? None right answer until now was accepted. The answers
are often as much wild speculation.
Documented for the first time by North American scientist Paul Kosok in 1939 and studied for the German
mathematician, archaeologist, Marie Reiche; Nazca Lines was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in
1994, and today are the south coast’s biggest tourist attraction.

AREQUIPA
It is not Possible that you visit Cuzco and
Machupicchu avoiding Peru’s second-largest
city "Arequipa". This city belongs to the
highlights of Peru and with good reason!
It is guarded by three dramatic volcanoes, the
Misti, Chachani and Pichu pichu. Also has a
great architecture that is a formidable
ensemble of baroque-mestizo buildings
grafted out of the local white rock called
“sillar”, that has so far withstood most of what
Mother Earth has thrown at it. The historic
center of Arequipa spans an area of 332
hectares and is a UNESCO World Heritage
site since 2000.
Also Arequipa has played a fundamental role in
Peru’s gastronomic renaissance; classic spicy
dishes such as Rocoto relleno, Chupe de
camarones, Cuy Chactao (Fried Guinea pig)
and Ocopa Arequipena, are some of them to
be mentioned.
Arequipeños are also a proud people fond of
intellectual debate, especially about their fervent
political beliefs, which find voice through regular
demonstrations in the Plaza de Armas. Not
surprisingly the city has produced one of Latin
America’s most influential novelists, Mario
Vargas Llosa.
In addition to its beautiful beaches in the
summer season (January to March) Arequipa
city is also the door for many interesting
excursions around the region, one of the most
popular are the visit of the the Colca canyon,
enormous but dwarfed by the glaciers and
volcanoes on either side of the valley; with
more distant but deeper, the Cotahuasi
Canyon, or the Valley of the Volcanoes.

THE COLCA CANYON
AREQUIPA
Mario Vargas Llosa described Colca as
"The Valley of Wonders." And we can
ensure you that it is no a literary
overstatement.
Colca is one of the most scenic
regions in Peru, a land of imposing
snowcapped volcanoes, narrow gorges,
artistically terraced agricultural slopes
that predate the Incas, arid desert
landscapes and vegetation, and remote
traditional villages.
Some of Peru's most recognizable
wildlife, including llamas, alpacas,
vicuñas are easy to find here. Also the
canyon is home to the Andean condor
(Vultur gryphus), a species that has
been the focus of worldwide
conservation efforts.
With a depth of 10,725 ft (3,270 m),
it is one of the deepest in the world,
second in Peru after the Cotahuasi
Canyon and more than twice as deep
as the Grand Canyon in the United
States.

PUNO & LAKE TITICACA
Puno city is mostly the unlovely city on the
altiplano, it is a high, wind - cold plateau. It has
one thing going for it that no other place on
earth can claim: The Lake Titicaca, the world's
highest navigable body of water, located at
3,830m (12,566 ft.) above sea level.
Lake Titicaca is also for many Peruvians a
mystical and sacred place. The legend said that
Manco Cápac, the original Inca chieftain has
risen from the lake's waters along with his sister
Mama Ocllo to found the Inca Empire.
Extensions tours in Puno.
Cultural exchange Uros-Amantani
and Taquile
(2 days / 1 night)
Departure: Everyday 07:15 am in combination with Uros and
Taquile visits.
Amantani island is located 26 miles (38 Km) away
from the city of Puno (3 ½ hours of navigation in
normal boat). Because of a more distant location,
tourism on the island of Amantani has not
developed in the same way as in Taquile island.
The main difference is that home-stays have
remained a more authentic cultural experience
in Amantani. A visit to Amantani necessarily
implies to stay one night on the island. The
houses are very simple and services are basic.
For many people this home-stay experience and
the encounter with the host family is a revelation
of the reality of Andean people at such altitude.
This cultural exchange experience in Amantani is
very touching and fascinating. We have called
this tour “CULTURAL” because every traveler is
welcome to share with the locals their time,
some artistic gift, educational activities or just
conversations.
Fundo Chincheros.
Soft hiking and relaxing countryside lunch
in an old hacienda.
Enjoy an authentic rural tourism experience
only 8 kilometers from the city of Puno.
Fundo Chincheros is a beautiful farm only
15 minutes away from the city of Puno. If
you want to adjust smoothly to altitude or
enjoy an easy and relaxing day at Lake
Titicaca we highly recommend considering a
visit to this wonderful place.
Departure: This program starts at 9:30am
and ends with lunch. Alternatively, it can start
at noon with lunch and conclude at sunset
or also be easily undertaken on the way to
the airport in your transfer IN or Out.

CUZCO & MACHUPICCHU
GIARDINO
The ex-capital of the Inca Empire is the gateway to the imperial city of
Machu Picchu and the Sacred valley.
Cusco is one of the undisputed highlights of South America and looks
and feels like the very good definition of an Andean capital.
This city it's a fascinating blend of pre-Columbian and colonial history
and contemporary mestizo culture. The Incas made Q'osqo (meaning
"navel of the world" in Quechua) the political, military, and cultural
center of their empire, which stretched up and down the Andes, from
Ecuador through Bolivia and all the way to Chile.
Cuzco offers to all its visitors not only Machupicchu citadel, but typical
Andean countryside dotted with villages, high altitude hamlets,
traditional rituals and festivals, trekking for one to ten days and
majestic ruins on unexpected places.
In 1983 Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It has
become a major tourist destination in Peru and South America nad
terraces, retaining walls built on filled with fertile soil
and watered by complex irrigation systems, allowed to
grow more than 250 plant species.
SALINERAS: OR "SALT MINES: Located northwest of
the town of Maras consist of about 2000 small wells,
which were already exploited since Inca times as a
means of economic exchange and is still being
exploited by the locals. The small wells with an average
area of about 5 m², built on the side of the slope of the
mountain of "Qaqawiñay" during the dry season is fill
SOUTH VALLEY TOUR
TIPON: This beautiful set of agricultural terraces, long
stairways and canals carved in stone is located about
20 km southwest of the city (45 minutes). It consists of
twelve terraces flanked by stone walls and huge
terraces perfectly polished. Tipon was part of the real
estate Yahuarhuaca while, a place dedicated to religious
worship and agricultural experimentation.
PIKILLAQTA: The complex includes the city itself plus
another 23 sets associated with closeness and
functionality, containing historic lagoon, with a
suggestive landscape considered one of the most
beautiful in the world. Pikillaqta was built during the
heyday of the Wari culture AD 500 or 900 years. This
great urban and ceremonial center of almost 2 km
long, consists of a citadel surrounded by ramparts and
walls up to 7m. height.
Pikillaqta stands as a massive set of stone structures
concentrated on a hill overlooking the beautiful lagoon
of Lucre. Pikillaqta fleas or city, is perhaps the greatest
garrison.
reasonably fit person should be able to
cover the route. It is fairly challenging
nevertheless, and altitudes of 4200m are
reached, so ensuring that you are well
acclimatized is important. If arriving from sea
level, plan to spend at least 2 full days in
Cusco (3 days is better) prior to commencing
the trek. This should allow plenty of time for
acclimatization
Andean Lodges – Apu Ausangate Trek:
This Trek is high recommended for visitors
that want something more then a “hike
experience”. It takes place in the
surroundings of the APU AUSANGATE. In
the Andean worldview, the “Apu” is the
Mountain Spirit which life depends upon, in
the Andes. With its 6,372 m. above sea level,
the Apu Ausangate is one of the highest
mountains in Southern Peru, and is
considered as Cusco´s Regional Tutelary
Divinity. Andean Lodges Tour Operator
offers you an unforgettable life changing
experience while hiking around the Apu
Ausangate. In this trek you will enjoy the
amazing Andean landscapes and have
chance to cultural interchange with native
communities that also work as partners on
this trek, offering their products and services,
thus contributing to their own culture´s
sustainable development and protection.
Hiking at an altitude of over 4,000 m. above
sea level, demands lots of energy. Therefore,
thinking about the hikers´ good rest, the

41
thinking about the hikers´ good rest, the
Tour Operator has built four comfortable
mountain lodges, along the route. Every
lodge offers different and exceptional views
of the Apu Ausangate, and all of them were
built according to ecological criteria, in
harmony with their natural surroundings, as
well as with the local architectural style and
culture´s aesthetics.
Choquequirao Trek
Hike from 4 to 5 days
Choquequirao means "cradle of gold" in
Quechua although this is probably not its
original Inca name. It is another "lost city of
the Incas" located high on a ridge spur
almost 1750m above the raging glacier-fed
Apurimac River and surrounded by towering
snow-capped peaks.
The US explorer Gary Ziegler suggests that
Choquequirao may have been the place
where the last Inca, Tupac Amaru, was raised
among Inca Priestesses. The abundance of
many double jamb doorways and niches
indicates that the place was held in high
status.
Trek Salkantay - Santa Teresa -
Machu Picchu
Hikes from 4 to 6 days
This trek is often referred as the "alternative
Inca Trail". Although many guide books and
travel agencies often describe this route as
"the-road-less-travelled" or a great trek to
"get away from the crowds" this can be
misleading. There is currently no control
over the maximum number of trekkers so
during the peak season (June - September)
there can sometimes be more trekkers than
the Classic Inca Trail and each year it is
becoming more popular especially with Latin
American visitors

TRUJILLO AND CHICLAYO – NORTH PERU
GIARDINO
Trujillo, the capital of La Libertad department, is the third-largest city
in Peru. The Moche and Chimu, two pre-Inca cultures, had great
influence in this area.
The city itself has an attractive colonial city centre and around town
there are some very interesting archaeological sites such as the Chimu
mud-city of Chan Chan, a monumental adobe complex of royal
palaces covering more than 52 sq. km (20 sq. miles).
Also it is fascinating to visit the Temples of the Moon and Sun (Huacas
del Sol y de la Luna), built by the Moche culture around A.D. 500.
The beaches of Huanchaco, half an hour’s drive from Trujillo, are ideal
for a spot of relaxation. Local fishermen still catch fish here with reed
boats (totora), just as they did long, long ago
The city of Chiclayo itself may not have much to offer, the region are
probably most well known for their archaeological sites and treasures,
such as Sipan, Túcume, Batán Grande and Huaca Rajada.

CHACHAPOYAS
GIARDINO
The Chachapoyas, also called the Warriors of the Clouds, were an Andean people living
in the cloud forests of the Amazonas region. The Incas conquered their civilization
shortly before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors.
The nearest ruins to Chachapoyas include the ruined city of Purunllacta – 40km south
of the city and one of the likely capitals of the Chachapoyas people. Another very
interesting high lith are Pueblo de los Muertos and Carajía, two impressive cliff-face
burial centres for the elite of this quite sophisticated culture. However, most famous and
most worthwhile of all the Chachapoyan archeological remains is Kuelap, a fabulous,
huge citadel complex. South of here lie Balsas and Leymebamba. To some extent, the
ancient culture lives on in some of the remote, traditional communities like La Jalca,
76km south of Chachapoyas.
Much of the land in the Chachapoyas region is full of ravines and very steep sided
valleys. Less than 30km north of Chachapoyas Town gush the fabulous Cataratas de
Gocta, reputedly the tallest in Peru.

A historical city because was here
OUR JUNGLE
GIARDINO
The Peruvian Amazon is the area of Amazon jungle which lies inside Peruvian
territory; it spreads east of the Andes to its borders with Ecuador, Colombia,
Brazil and Bolivia. This region covers 60% of Peru and is marked by a large
degree of biodiversity.
The Peruvian Amazon is traditionally divided into two distinct ecoregions: The
lowland jungle, called Selva Baja in Spanish, is also known as the Omagua
region, Walla, Anti, Amazonian rainforest and/or Amazon basin. This is the
largest ecoregion of Peru, and lies between 80 and 1000 meters above sea
level. The highland jungle, in Spanish known as Selva Alta and also called
Rupa-Rupa region, Andean Jungle, Ceja de Selva, extends into the eastern
foothills of the Andes, lying between 1000 to 3800 m above sea level.
