Hello and welcome to the September
eNewsletter!
As we start to approach autumn here in Yorkshire, we are beginning to turn our
attention towards cooler days and chunky wools! We are also looking forward to
exhibiting at the Knitting & Stitching Show at Ally Pally next month and hope to see
some of you there.
To turn our attention back to the present, however, this month, we take a whistlestop
tour of our pick of indie designs on Ravelry at the moment and catch up with the
winner of our Martin Storey Knit Along competition earlier this year.
Finally, we bring you news of Marie Wallin’s latest blanket club and, of course, we
have an exclusive free pattern for you – this month’s design is Capitola, an elegant
scarf in Kidsilk Haze.
We hope you enjoy your new issue!
Fairisle Club
FAIRISLE CLUB 2 – booking from 1st
September.
The FAIRISLE CLUB is a fun, limited
edition, knitalong improving your fairisle
technique, whilst creating a beautiful
blanket.
ABOUT
This new blanket is inspired by Nordic
and Scandinavian fairisle design and
the whole blanket uses just 11 colours
of Rowan Felted Tweed. The blanket is
made up of 10 sections, each worked
off the other except for sections 1 and
2. These are knitted separately and
are sewn together and then section 3
is knitted off the joined sections. This
means that the only sewing up is this
seam between sections 1 and 2.
Being Nordic inspired, the fairisle patterns
are more graphic and are combined with
the contrasting colours that make this
blanket easier to knit than the Fairisle
Club 1 blanket as the repeats are easier
to follow.
The photographs show the finished
blanket with close ups of some of the
sections.
ROWANin the U.S.A
by Linda Pratt
What’s in Vogue
Fall 2016 is off to
a great start for
Rowan with two
fairisle editorials
in the new issue
of Vogue Knitting
(published as
Designer Knitting
in the UK). On the
cover of the North
American edition is designer Mary Jane
Mucklestone’s super-cute fairisle hat
in five shades of Rowan Felted Tweed.
Vogue Knitting will also feature this
hat as part of a Fairisle KAL starting on
September 6 th , ending with a display of
the finished hats from attendees of their
VK Live show in Minneapolis in early
November.
Never outdone, Rowan designer Marie
Wallin exclusively created Ruana for the
fall issue of Vogue Knitting using nine
vivid colors in Rowan Felted Tweed.
This is a project that is sure to take the
knitter into those wintery nights and will
be beautiful to wear when finished.
Lastly, Rowan is again featured on the
back cover advertisement, this time with
a classic garter ridge scarf in Big Wool.
The pattern for this super-simple, perfect
gift or beginner project can also be found
in the pages of the Fall issue.
Rowan’s Top Sellers on Ravelry
Rowan has had an active Ravelry pattern
shop since the spring of 2014. With well
over 300 patterns available for download,
there is a project for everyone in their
favorite Rowan yarns.
We’ve checked the stats, and here are
our top five designs:
#1 Windy Scarf – Featured on the cover
of Rowan Magazine 58, this amazing
scarf by Martin Storey, knit in Rowan
Pure Wool Worsted, features two shades
of gray entwined in a striped garter stitch
with a lattice cable overlay.
#2 The perfect go-to sweater that knits
up quickly, Sarah Hatton’s His & Hers
Sweater is perfectly worked in Rowan
Cocoon. Great for beginners and
experienced knitters alike, this oversized
pullover features dropped shoulders and
short mock T-neck.
#3 Mayvala by Valerie Lenton is a
beautiful lace design in Rowan Kidsilk
Haze. Its overall diamond lace pattern
is joined at the front with delicate knitted
“fingers” that are woven together to form
a square.
#4 Maple, by Marie Wallin, from Magazine
50 is a beautiful floral cardigan worked in
fairisle. It’s a perfect treasure to knit.
#5 Lidiya Scarf, by Kaffe Fassett.
Originally from Magazine 48, this small
motif, striped fairisle scarf, knit in Rowan
Felted Tweed, is a wonderful somewhat
portable project that keeps your interest
until finished.
Independent Designers Create with Rowan Yarns
Ravelry is an amazing source of patterns and
information for knitting and crochet with Rowan Yarns.
Here are four independent designers whose work,
shown on their Ravelry home pages, feature Rowan
Yarns. Each are available for sale on the site.
Aedin, by Paula P. Designs features an easy, modern
twist on a simple lace and cable pullover, with bottomup
construction, then knitting in the round at the yoke,
raglan sleeve shaping and a jewel neck to finish.
Designed in Rowan Kid Classic and sized from 32”
(92 cm) to 54” (135 cm), Aedin would be a fabulous
addition to any sweater wardrobe.
Nancy Hinsch designed Mahina as part of the 2016
Gift-A-Long for the Knitting Bee in Beaverton, Oregon.
Using one strand of Kidsilk Haze and a coordinating
shade of Rowan Super Fine Merino 4 Ply, the color
options are limitless. Worked on size 6.5mm (US 10.5)
needles, this soft and luxurious cowl will be finished
quickly for upcoming holiday gift-giving!
Anna Nikipirowicz’s Laurel Shawl, knit in Rowan
Kidsilk Haze, was originally published as part of her
Autumn mini-collection. A beautiful burst of leafy
lace petals border this four-ball, stockinette stitch,
triangular-shaped shawl – measuring 134 cm (54”)
x60cm (24”) long. Let your colour style be your guide
– enjoy imagining a rainbow of colors from the palette
of Kidsilk Haze.
Rowan Ambassador, blogger and designer Kristen
Rettig fell in love with a baby sweater that she saw.
Knit by the baby’s great-grandmother, the pattern was
no longer available. Kristen was inspired to create her
own version of the sweater, Gingersnap, in Rowan
Pure Wool Worsted yarn. It would also be great in
Rowan Handknit Cotton. Kristin blogged about the
process in her blog, Knitionary, and offers it for free
on Ravelry.
Martin Storey Knit Along
Competition 2016
– We Catch Up With Winner
Karen Shackleton
“I decided to join in with this
KAL when I received an
email from Knitrowan and
thought it would be a nice
idea to knit something other
than clothes. I had knitted
animals for my great nieces
and snowmen for Christmas
but I really did like the idea of
this blanket. I didn’t actually
“knit along” because I had a
baby shawl to complete first.
My husband and I had
recently been to Marrakech
and so when I saw the spice
colour way I knew it was
the one for me and it also
complements the colours in
our conservatory.
I really enjoyed knitting
all the squares but I think
my favourite was the “slip
stitch tweed square” (stage
6) because this was a new
technique for me and I really
like the effect.
I have been knitting all of
my life (or it feels like it!).
My mum taught me to knit
when I was probably about
4 years old and it is a hobby
I really enjoy. My mum is still
knitting and she is now 89
years old!!
At the moment I don’t have
any knitting on the go. At the
beginning of this year I learnt
to crochet so I am in the
middle of a CAL blanket and
really enjoying it although
I’m not finding it as easy as
my knitting.
The thing I enjoyed the
most about the KAL was
the surprise of each
square being revealed and
then learning some new
techniques such as the
heart square where beads
were used because I haven’t
knitted with beads before.
Thank you so much for
the really lovely wool and
knitting patterns you sent
to me for my prize and I will
really enjoy knitting with the
wool.”
What’s New From
The Kaffe Fassett Studio
We wanted to bring you up to date with all the busy happenings at the Kaffe Fassett Studio this
year, with Kaffe and Brandon set to host classes at both Lady Sew and Sew and Black Sheep
Wools next month, whilst currently in the USA for a six week back-to-back quilting workshop
tour!
The tour includes thirteen quilting workshops and runs until November 4 th and features lectures
and workshops by the famous designers. Visit www.kaffefassettstudio.com for all the details.
Meanwhile, Brandon will host a knitting workshop at Lady Sew and Sew on November 15 th .
Concentrating on Colour, Brandon Mably
Tuesday, 15 Nov. Knitting Workshop,10am – 4pm
Skill level: All levels
Each workshop is limited to 25 students.
Enjoy a one day creative knitting workshop with Brandon Mably from the Kaffe Fassett Design
Studio. This workshop is for knitters who are interested in sharpening their colour observation
in design.
Participants should know how to knit and purl – only the basic stocking stitch will be used in
the workshop.
This course inspires knitters to sharpen their observation of colour by working with a range of
light and dark colours in contrasting tones.
The experience gained should give knitters the confidence to use their own personal colour
scheme in any of their own designs in the future.
Brandon will give an introduction to the Persian Poppy design, and
then students will work from a basic given graph which he will provide.
Brandon will demonstrate the method of carrying yarn in fairisle and intarsia knitting
and then work with students as they apply the technique to their own knitting.
Attention will be paid to colour, texture, pattern and everyone will work on a swatch using at
least 12 colours. Only the basic stocking stitch will be used.
Brandon will critique everyone’s work in the afternoon, in a very positive way!
