<strong>October</strong> is such an exciting month, it’s finally time to purchase<br />

your autumn wardrobe at long last. Although the shops have<br />

their woollies in from August, it just doesn’t seem right to<br />

purchase when you haven’t even said goodbye to your bikini! I<br />

have my eye on anything velvet, suede and ideally in berry and<br />

brown. Another wardrobe item which needs winterising is my<br />

running kit. It’s only recently (during the summer months) that<br />

I have found a fondness for the sport. Now the temperature<br />

has dropped, it will be time to put the shorts away and invest<br />

in more appropriate attire in time for my next half marathon.<br />

Anyone who enjoys running should check out Positive Steps<br />

events, who put on some fab courses varying from coastal to<br />

forest trail runs.<br />

Food by The Pantry, the National Heritage Centre for<br />

Horseracing & Sporting Art’s restaurant/café, is<br />

Serve with the soured cream and grated<br />

cheese, and invite everyone to fill and roll<br />

their own tortillas<br />

INGREDIENTS:<br />

• 340g pack essential Waitrose<br />

British Beef Frying Steak, cut into<br />

2cm-wide strips<br />

• 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped<br />

• 1 tsp dried oregano<br />

• Juice of 2 limes<br />

• 2 tbsp olive oil<br />

• 2 ripe avocados<br />

• 1 Waitrose Classic Vine Tomato,<br />

finely chopped<br />

• 1 red chilli, seeded and diced<br />

• 2 tbsp chopped chives<br />

• 2 Waitrose Red Romano Peppers,<br />

seeded and cut into 10cm-long<br />

strips<br />

• 4 flour tortillas<br />

• Soured cream and grated Gruyère<br />

to serve<br />

Steak Fajitas with Avocado Salsa<br />

1. Place the steak, garlic, oregano, half the lime<br />

juice and 1 tbsp olive oil in a large bowl and toss<br />

well together. Leave to marinate for 10 minutes.<br />

2. Meanwhile, skin, stone and finely dice the<br />

avocados. Mix with the remaining lime juice and<br />

olive oil, the tomato, chilli and chives, then set<br />

aside.<br />

3. Heat a large frying pan and stir-fry the steak and<br />

peppers over a high heat for 5 minutes until the<br />

peppers are tender and the steak is nicely browned.<br />

Tip into a large serving bowl.<br />

Serves 4, Prep 15 mins, Cook 30 mins<br />

4. Wipe out the pan with kitchen paper and briefly<br />

warm the tortillas. Plate the steak and peppers,<br />

salsa and tortillas on separate serving dishes.

of the pumpkin - the skin to make crisps, raw<br />

cubes compressed in maple and lemon, seeds<br />

and the flesh to make a delicious saag aloo.<br />

don’t be afraid to experiment with them,” James<br />

With just two months to go before the Christmas<br />

celebrations begin, <strong>Velvet</strong> visits Best Western Heath<br />

Court Hotel to see what the Christmas period has in store<br />

The Heath Court Hotel, situated in the heart of Newmarket is all set for the Christmas<br />

party season which kicks-off in December. The party season at the Hotel will include a<br />

selection of Festive Party Nights, a Christmas Carvery and a New Year’s Eve party to<br />

remember!<br />

Festive Party Nights<br />

The welcoming Hotel never disappoints<br />

when it comes to Christmas. This year,<br />

its delicious menu combined with great<br />

entertainment is set to get everyone on<br />

the dance floor this festive season. The<br />

Hotel can cater for small parties of just two,<br />

to larger groups of 110 in the restaurant.<br />

Guests can also hire the venue’s Guineas<br />

Suite, which can accommodate up to 140<br />

guests.<br />

Court Hotel said, “Our Party Nights are<br />

proving very popular and we are getting a<br />

lot of repeat business and new guests who<br />

are booking as we are being recommended,<br />

which is fantastic. We have reached<br />

capacity and stopped selling places on<br />

Friday 16th and Saturday 17th December.<br />

We still have availability on other nights, but<br />

places are going fast.<br />

This year we’ve invested in a new sound<br />

system and Resident DJ Martin Gear,<br />

who is already busy DJing at the Hotel for<br />

weddings and parties. The feedback we have<br />

received has been great and Martin really<br />

knows how to get a party started!<br />

Christmas Carvery<br />

Heath Court Hotel is renowned for its<br />

fantastic Sunday roast and the Christmas<br />

Carvery never disappoints. The Christmas<br />

Carvery is being served every weekday and<br />

evenings throughout December except<br />

Party Nights and is only £8 for a main<br />

course. With succulent roast turkey, crisp<br />

roast vegetables and traditional, fruity<br />

Christmas pudding on the menu, the Hotel<br />

is going to be an ideal place for getting into<br />

the Christmas spirit. Restaurant Manager,<br />

Sarah Voss, said, “Our Chefs prepare and<br />

cook all our meals at the hotel, which makes<br />

it a lot easier to accommodate dietary<br />

requirements and our Sunday Carvery will<br />

be running as normal.”<br />

New Year’s Eve<br />

The finale of Christmas at the Heath Court<br />

Hotel is the fabulous Gala Dinner on New<br />

Year’s Eve. Set to be bigger and better than<br />

previous years, it’s a night you will not forget<br />

VEGAN DELIGHTS<br />

Alex Higgs, of food and lifestyle blog Bone White China and co-organiser<br />

of Ely Markets Vegan Fair, talks to us about its upcoming event<br />

Once side-lined as a foodie niche, vegan food is now booming, with<br />

interesting and exciting producers and street food vendors popping<br />

up every week. No longer ‘just for vegans’, its appeal is broadening,<br />

thanks to the rise of vegan comfort food such as Food by Lizzi’s<br />

‘Vegan Scotch Eggless’ and sweet treats such as Audrey’s vegan<br />

cakes.<br />

“From the start, it was really important to me to show people that<br />

vegan cakes could taste as good, if not better, than traditional<br />

dairy-based cakes… I love it when customers don’t actually realise<br />

that my cakes are completely vegan until I tell them, and they’re<br />

amazed at how good they are. I have regular customers who love my<br />

baking regardless of it being vegan, and I like to think that by giving<br />

them delicious animal-free food, it might make them think about<br />

making further changes in their diet and stepping away from animal<br />

products,” Audrey Hewerdine, of Audrey’s Vegan Cake, tells us.<br />

It’s not just the rise of innovative producers that is championing<br />

this change, it’s also how easy it is to discover and find them, as<br />

Iain of Replete Flatbreads puts it... “The use of social media such as<br />

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, has really connected the vegan<br />

and vegetarian communities. This is especially the case on Ely<br />

Farmers Market, where the hashtag #VeganAlley has united several<br />

of the producers and boosted trade for the market.”<br />

Ely Markets are celebrating this boom in Vegan traders by<br />

launching the Ely Vegan Fair. “We are really looking forward to our<br />

first Ely Markets Vegan Fair complementing our regular weekly<br />

markets and know that our visitors will find loads of delicious food<br />

and unique products to sample!” Julia Davis of Ely Markets tells us.<br />

“Our vegan offering is just part of the fantastic variety of stalls we<br />

have on our markets every week! The Vegan Fair is the first of our<br />

special events on Ely Markets showcasing the diverse choice for all<br />

tastes we have all year round.”<br />

Expect familiar faces alongside regional and national vegan traders,<br />

a vegan and organic bar, plus really exciting street food including<br />

Cambridge Food and Drink Award-Winner, The Wandering Yak.<br />

This family-friendly day is for vegans, the V-curious and lovers of<br />

lawyer Matt Murdoch as he attempts to balance his budding law<br />

firm with a crimefighting career that brings him into conflict with<br />

exhibitors once again, to ensure that all<br />

those participating really are some of the<br />

extremely high quality pieces on offer,<br />

will be presented directly by the artists<br />

themselves,” founder and artist, Sally<br />

Dunham tells us. Not only will you be able<br />

to see a range of paintings, ceramics, glass,<br />

sculpture, textiles, furniture, jewellery,<br />

woodwork, and print from over 40<br />

exhibitors, there will also be a chance for<br />

you to see artists demonstrating their work<br />

first hand. Alongside this, the exhibitors will<br />

of course be more than happy to discuss<br />

their ideas and inspirations with you, as<br />

well as perhaps generating ideas for a<br />

personalised bespoke piece which can be<br />

constructed at a later date.<br />

“I’ve had many years’ experience exhibiting<br />

at various shows up and down the country,<br />

so I’ve really focused on ensuring that the<br />

quality of artwork on display is at the very<br />

best it can be. I’ve also promised visitors<br />

that everything on display will have been<br />

handmade by the artists themselves, as<br />

there will be no brought in goods allowed.<br />

It’s set to be a great event where I hope to<br />

make artwork more accessible to everyone,”<br />

explains Sally.<br />

It’s the 90s craze again, but re-invigorated with wide leg trousers<br />

“Race-day fashion tends not to follow the catwalk trends in their<br />

entirety, as there are many rules of etiquette still in play when it<br />

comes to suitable racing attire. The most stylish ladies will offer<br />

a subtle nod to a favourite trend, and this year I feel we will see<br />

many statement furs, bell sleeves, chokers and 70s inspired<br />

platform shoes and boots.<br />

Autumn is a great season fashion-wise, I find it so much easier<br />

than summer. You know you will need a coat, tights and full shoes so there is no second<br />

guessing the weather as you do in summer.<br />

That being said, hats do need to edge on the practical side, so don’t be tempted by the<br />

fabulous structural masterpieces available. One gust of wind and they’re gone, along with your<br />

lovely coiffered hairstyle! As with every season, certain trends don’t work for a day at the races,<br />

so leave behind your puffa jackets, PVC, tinsel tops and 90s sports hoodies. So cool, but really<br />

not appropriate attire for the Premier Enclosure!”<br />

certain that your new signature look constantly inspires you to<br />

have fun without defining your outfit to any specific occasion.<br />

Nightwear is acceptable on a lunch date just as much as your<br />

new seductive leopard print dress will be admired in the office…<br />

It is your moment to set the tone and to do so confidently, as<br />

both gluttony and voluptuousness are welcome at any given<br />

chance. As always, embrace being happy in your skin, focus on<br />

your mood rather than the occasion and don’t think twice. The<br />

stigma that a woman burdens herself with imploring she isn’t<br />

accurately dressed if seen disrespecting a given dress code or a<br />

pair of heels or a tailored jacket, is sooooo last season.<br />

Give in and start embracing leopard, velvet, chains, military<br />

and shiny leathers like never before! Lose sight of your specific<br />

outfit, but rather, embrace your look with a new reinvented<br />

style. It’s the demeanour that counts! I have rustled through<br />

When it comes to a facial treatment, you<br />

have two options; relaxing and spiritual<br />

or medical and technical. The latter<br />

tend to be result-driven, and I often<br />

find myself sitting in this camp. One of<br />

the latest methods on the market is the<br />

recently, and I was invited to experience it.<br />

subjects reported that their skin felt twice<br />

as radiant.<br />

At the beginning of my treatment, Fiona<br />

assessed my skin’s needs and uncovered<br />

which areas were of a concern to me. I<br />

always feel like I have a slightly bloated<br />

face - I blame too much tea and a chronic<br />

lack of sleep! My eyes are often puffy and,<br />

at the moment, I am lacking a glow due<br />

to dehydration. Just a few things for LPG<br />

to tackle, but Fiona assured me this was<br />

all possible. Stage one uses an electronic<br />

hand-held device that stimulates collagen<br />

and elastin, the building blocks for firm and<br />

supple skin. The machine could be targeted<br />

to areas of concern. For me, these are my<br />

forehead and eyes. However, Fiona told<br />

me that one of the most popular areas to<br />

treat is the chin. As we age, it is one of the<br />

first areas where gravity shows its work.<br />

Fiona performed the treatment on one<br />

side of my face to show me the difference;<br />

I was very impressed and could clearly see<br />

a lifted appearance, especially around my<br />

cheekbones. This stage of the treatment<br />

lasted for 30 minutes; it was quite relaxing<br />

and not uncomfortable at all.<br />

The next stage was a facial peel. Facial<br />

peels remove the dead skin cells, revealing<br />

a fresh radiant glow and skin that becomes<br />

more receptive to your regular topical<br />

facial products. The LPG facial peel offers<br />

a superficial chemical exfoliation using<br />

either 10% or 20% glycolic acid. When<br />

this was applied, I felt a slight tingling,<br />

enough to know that some good was being<br />

done, but without any discomfort. As the<br />

product is very active, it can only remain<br />

on the skin for four minutes, after which<br />

Fiona brought out the soothing hot mitts<br />

to delicately remove the peel.<br />

The final stage is the treat - a refreshing<br />

and soothing collagen mask. After your<br />

skin has been through the mill (sucked,<br />

prodded and exfoliated, but all for a good<br />

reason!) the mask makes everything<br />

worthwhile. After application, the mask<br />

was left on for 10 minutes, and Fiona<br />

offered to use the LPG machine on either<br />

my hands or chest; these two areas are<br />

prone to sun damage and fine lines. I opted<br />

for it to be used on my hands, and was<br />

incredibly impressed with the results.<br />

Gone is the idea that all hair extensions<br />

are good for is increasing length; the<br />

most popular reasons for requesting hair<br />

extensions are to build up gaps in the hair,<br />

add volume and give a healthy aesthetic,<br />

the semi-permanent solutions. It’s always<br />

Micro-ring extensions are where your hair<br />

is passed through a small copper micro-ring<br />

and the extension hair is clamped within the<br />

micro ring. It does not use any heat or glue,<br />

so is a good alternative for those who are<br />

concerned about heat application methods.<br />

us, we specialise in the ‘fill-in prebonded<br />

can take between 1-4 hours depending on<br />

how many bonds are required and length<br />

Blitz all the ingredients together in a food<br />

processor until mixture is sticky. Try not<br />

There are some frightening studies and<br />

statistics surrounding child obesity, but<br />

in a world where it seems the norm and<br />

far easier to point the finger than offer a<br />

guiding hand, I would like to break the cycle.<br />

With over 5,000,000 children in 2,000<br />

schools around the UK, and following<br />

the release of a collection of studies, it is<br />

believed that over 25% of all children leave<br />

school obese. This results in poor selfimage,<br />

low self-esteem, and a tendency to<br />

withdraw from others and in some severe<br />

cases depression which can be taken on<br />

into adult life. As adults, teachers, coaches<br />

and activity professionals, we have a<br />

responsibility and a duty to the youth of<br />

today, and to ourselves to step up, take<br />

positive action and be the guiding force that<br />

inspires change. And it is easier than you<br />

think. I’ve outlined three simple steps...<br />

1. LEAD BY EXAMPLE<br />

It’s the same in adults as it is in children. A<br />

healthy and balanced nutritional program<br />

and regular exercise helps with both<br />

physical and mental states, no matter how<br />

old you are. Practice what you preach and<br />

be the change that inspires. Staying active,<br />

eating healthily and encouraging children<br />

to do the same is a great way to learn about<br />

new foods and activities and get healthy<br />

together. It’s as simple as finding a healthy<br />

recipe online or in a magazine, cycling<br />

or walking to the shops to collect the<br />

ingredients to cook for all the family.<br />

2. KIDS NEED TO BE KIDS<br />

Play is the way! Put down the tablet, games<br />

console or phone and get outside. A trip<br />

to the park, a cycle ride or forest walk with<br />

friends can not only help increase physical<br />

attributes but encourage social interaction,<br />

communication skills and skills like problem<br />

solving and working as part of a team.<br />

Games such as capture the flag, tag and<br />

obstacle courses plus cycle rides round the<br />

village, are a great source of exercise as well<br />

as working on agility, strength, competitive<br />

nature and problem solving in a fun way.<br />

3. SUPPORT PE AND ORGANISED<br />

RECREATION<br />

Organised clubs and PE support in schools<br />

and in extra-curricular clubs has been<br />

proven to improve learning capacity and<br />

classroom performance by up to 25% in<br />

areas such as productivity, attentiveness<br />

and achievement. As little as 30 minutes<br />

exercise has been proven to, not only<br />

improve the in-class participation, but<br />

overall performance in exams.<br />

The Wrong Way?<br />

This month, Adam Prescott asks if we’re looking at losing<br />

Last month, I explained why focusing on<br />

results instead of health has actually, in<br />

a weird ironic way, become detrimental<br />

to your results. If you missed it, you can<br />

challenges to help start adjusting your<br />

mindset and boosting your confidence, so<br />

I hope you have been giving them a go as it<br />

can all contribute to a ‘healthier you’ in the<br />

long run.<br />

This month I want to dive into<br />

something a little more ‘foodie’<br />

related and ask, how do we eat<br />

to feel good and lose weight?<br />

Well, isn’t that the million dollar<br />

question?! How many people<br />

do you know that are trying to<br />

lose weight, or wanting to start<br />

losing weight? Exactly... quite a<br />

few! How many ‘diets’ do you know<br />

about? Atkins, Paleo, Ketogenic?<br />

Or perhaps some of the more, what<br />

I would call, ‘hideous diet schemes’<br />

like ‘The Special K Diet’, ‘The Cambridge<br />

Diet’ or ‘The Cookie Diet’ (yes that is a real<br />

thing)...<br />

If there are so many diets out there,<br />

how come everyone is still trying and<br />

struggling to lose weight? Well, as I briefly<br />

said up top, last month I spoke about how<br />

confidence (or lack of) and mindset is a<br />

huge contributor to whether we succeed<br />

in losing body fat, feeling healthy and,<br />

fundamentally, feeling confident again.<br />

Let’s forget about the psychological aspect<br />

this month and automatically remove<br />

these ‘diets’ as they just contribute to more<br />

misinformation and confusion amongst<br />

people who truly want to change their<br />

appearance and feel more confident long<br />

term, not to mention they can damage<br />

people’s health. Let’s focus more on the<br />

real food diets.<br />

The three real food diets I’ve already<br />

mentioned above (Atkins, Paleo,<br />

Ketogenic), along with many others, all<br />

have a couple of things in common... they<br />

all have many success stories and they all<br />

favour one macro<br />

nutrient,<br />

whether it<br />

be fat,<br />

protein or<br />

carbohydrates.<br />

I’ve seen professionals that favour one<br />

of these particular diets argue their way<br />

of eating over the other until they are<br />

red in the face. Yet, at some point in the<br />

argument they will all state that ‘everybody<br />

is different’. That’s exactly my point! The<br />

tricky thing about nutrition is everybody<br />

is different. I personally feel that macro<br />

nutrients have been dumbed down over<br />

the years. When a lot of people think of<br />

protein, they only think of meat or eggs.<br />

What about beans and legumes that have<br />

lots of protein as well as many other micro<br />

and phytonutrients?<br />

That leads to my point: this critical<br />

thinking should instead be focused on<br />

getting optimal amounts of micro and<br />

phytonutrients into the body without<br />

an excess of any macro nutrients. You<br />

could be relatively healthy on a diet<br />

that is high in fats, proteins or<br />

carbohydrates (providing they’re of<br />

high quality). The key focus should<br />

be on a comprehensive nutrient<br />

intake - are we getting enough<br />

micronutrients, phytonutrients<br />

and antioxidants into our bodies to<br />

maximise our bodily functions?<br />

Let’s now look at obesity, or being<br />

overweight. The common action<br />

when someone wants to lose weight,<br />

for whatever reason, is to reduce the<br />

amount of food we eat and increase<br />

the amount of energy we output. The<br />

classic calories in vs calories out. But hold<br />

on, what are the key symptoms of being<br />

obese? Tired, demotivated, unhappy (not<br />

always but generally), bags under the eyes,<br />

maybe signs of metabolic syndrome; high<br />

blood pressure, high blood glucose levels,<br />

early onset of type 2 diabetes... I’m not<br />

saying if you are overweight that all of<br />

those apply to you, you may only have a<br />

couple, particularly the first few. But if<br />

that’s the case, is restricting your nutrient<br />

intake the right thing to be doing, let alone<br />

coupling that with increasing exercise? All<br />

of a sudden you find your body craving for<br />

nutrients, sending you all of these signals,<br />

Therefore, not long after starting this new<br />

‘diet’ you feel even worse and your willpower<br />

doesn’t stand a<br />

This almost always<br />

happens on the<br />

quick fix diets you hear about, but it can<br />

also happen on the real food diets when one<br />

macro nutrient is favoured too much.<br />

All of those side effects from eating<br />

excessive amounts of calories and poorquality<br />

‘foods’ are just that - side effects.<br />

You may think that you’re eating too much<br />

because of the amount of calories you are<br />

consuming, however your body is screaming<br />

at you for nutrients. All of the side effects;<br />

feeling down, excess body fat, tiredness<br />

etc, can be reversed if you give the body<br />

the nutrients it needs to thrive. And that is<br />

exactly what optimal consumption of micro<br />

nutrients, phytonutrients and antioxidants<br />

can do.<br />

This is why at Revolution Fitness, we look<br />

at excess body fat as a deficiency issue. By<br />

loading the body up with an ample amount<br />

of micronutrients, phytonutrients and<br />

antioxidants (by that I mean a large variety<br />

of vegetables!) we can give the body what<br />

it needs to start optimising its functions,<br />

boosting energy levels and dropping the<br />

inches. When you consume excess amounts<br />

of these nutrients without the excess of<br />

calories, the body starts to function at a<br />

higher level and you will naturally consume<br />

enough macro nutrients by eating large<br />

variations of fruits and vegetables such as,<br />

avocados, nuts, seeds, onions, mushrooms,<br />

green vegetables and cruciferous vegetables<br />

to name just a few.<br />

So what are the types of nutrients I keep<br />

going on about? Micronutrients are<br />

non-caloric elements and substances that<br />

play a crucial role in our daily functions,<br />

from regulating your metabolism to bone<br />

density, such as magnesium or calcium.<br />

Phytonutrients are the ‘new kids on the<br />

block’, only being discovered in the 1990s.<br />

They are natural chemicals found in a lot<br />

of our fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and<br />

seeds. They are paramount in disease<br />

prevention and keeping you functioning<br />

optimally. Antioxidants? Well we’ve all<br />

heard of these and know they are good for<br />

you but what do they do? Put simply, they<br />

are elements that prohibit the oxidation of<br />

other molecules in the body, keeping you<br />

strong and lively. A couple of examples<br />

would be Vitamin C and selenium.<br />

Eating raw is important too. There are<br />

up to 50% more nutrients in raw foods<br />

than there are in cooked foods. I’ll give<br />

you a quick example, phytochemicals like<br />

isothiocyanates (ITCs) are formed after an<br />

enzyme reaction. The enzyme needed for<br />

this reaction is called myrosinase, and can<br />

only happen after the cell wall is broken<br />

down (chewed or blended). If you cook<br />

the food first, it destroys the myrosinase<br />

inhibiting the formation of the ITCs,<br />

lowering the nutrient and craving-reducing<br />

value of the food. Whenever you eat a meal,<br />

ask yourself, is there any way I can add<br />

some raw additions to this meal?<br />

When I have my omelette in the morning, I<br />

choose a variety of veg, normally something<br />

along the lines of onions, mushrooms,<br />

peppers, spinach, thyme and garlic. I put<br />

half of all of those in the pan along with<br />

the eggs, whilst the other half I put straight<br />

onto the plate... RAW! It all tastes great and<br />

I get the full nutrient value of those foods.<br />

For the next 30 days, until the next issue of<br />

<strong>Velvet</strong>, try focusing on cutting out all of the<br />

processed food and bring back the veg. Add<br />

in spices and herbs to flavour everything,<br />

and then add anything raw which comes to<br />

mind. Try my top tips from last month, and<br />

my ‘extra veg challenge’ this month and see<br />

how you feel by the end of <strong>October</strong>.<br />

significant revamp<br />

If you’re looking for the latest technology in<br />

a spacious, fully-equipped gym, then stop<br />

the search. In a bid to improve the facilities<br />

for both customers and staff, the team at<br />

Abbeycroft Leisure have just invested in<br />

a complete overhaul at their current site<br />

here in Newmarket. Not only have they<br />

introduced an abundance of the latest new<br />

equipment, they’ve also increased the gym<br />

space. For those of you who already know<br />

the space, Studio 3 and the internal staff<br />

office will be knocked through to create a<br />

larger gym space which will make room for<br />

the new Matrix Fitness equipment.<br />

Whilst some of the current machines<br />

will remain, there will be plenty of new<br />

equipment too including:<br />

• A new second squat rack and Connexus<br />

functional and group training rigs.<br />

• A new 50-station-strong cardiovascular<br />

displays which display both watt rate and<br />

heart rate to help users hit their unique<br />

training targets.<br />

These really are the most up-to-date pieces<br />

of technology and will offer members<br />

new ways to train. Other pieces of new<br />

equipment include:<br />

• An Olympic lifting platform<br />

• TRX with X-Mount<br />

• Hybrid, Recumbent and Upright Cycles<br />

• Elliptical Trainers, Steppers, Drive<br />

Performance Trainers and more.<br />

These additional training stations will mean<br />

less chaos at peak times and will also enable<br />

them to facilitate new members.<br />

Alongside the new equipment and<br />

increased gym space, the interior itself<br />

will see a fresh new look. For the majority<br />

of the refurbishment, the gym has been<br />

able to remain open keeping disruption to<br />

a minimum for existing members. Closing<br />

for just three days, the new refreshed space<br />

will open on Saturday 8th <strong>October</strong> when<br />

all work will have been completed. On 15th<br />

and 16th <strong>October</strong>, they will hold an open<br />

weekend to showcase their new facilities to<br />

current members as well as welcoming new<br />

As the nights draw in and temperatures<br />

drop, there’s nothing quite like lighting<br />

a fire in the evenings. Not only do fires<br />

add warmth and comfort to your home, a<br />

fireplace is also great for adding a stunning<br />

focal point to your room. When it comes<br />

to style, practicality and budget, there’s a<br />

lot to consider. We caught up with James<br />

Hilton, Business Development Manager<br />

at Cambridge’s Ivett & Reed, to find out a<br />

little more...<br />

Now in their 120th year of trading, Ivett<br />

& Reed really know their stuff when it<br />

comes to stonemasonry. They manufacture<br />

and install bespoke stone fireplaces and<br />

hearths, and are one of the region’s major<br />

independent retailers of fires and stoves.<br />

From wood burning and multi-fuel, to gas<br />

and electric, they’ve got it covered. They<br />

what’s best?<br />

With over 60 fireplaces on display and<br />

many live working fires, their Cambridge<br />

showroom has lots to offer. “Following a<br />

boom in sales of wood burning and multifuel<br />

stoves in recent years, we have seen a<br />

significant shift in the market back towards<br />

gas fires in the past 12 months,” James<br />

tells us. “Leading manufacturers such as<br />

Gazco and Bellfires have continued to<br />

develop products offering an increasingly<br />

realistic log effect, combined with the clean<br />

convenience of gas,” he continues.<br />

These quality gas fires are available in<br />

versions to suit most properties, either<br />

set into a traditional stone fireplace and<br />

hearth, as a more contemporary ‘hole-inthe-wall’,<br />

or even as gas versions of popular<br />

freestanding stove designs. “Wood burning<br />

stoves still remain popular for us, with new<br />

models such as the Jotul F 105 and Stovax<br />

Elise range of cassette stoves making a<br />

particular impact on the market this year,”<br />

explains James.<br />

To complete the picture, the new Gazco<br />

Radiance range of electric fires, offering<br />

both flat wall-mounted and inset versions,<br />

have been a real hit with Ivett & Reed’s<br />

clients in Cambridge. “If you’re looking<br />

for a contemporary feature fire in a room<br />

where a solid fuel or gas appliance is either<br />

impractical or not required, then this would<br />

be for you!” James concludes.<br />

This month we talk all things interiors with<br />

Lesley, of Newmarket’s Lesley Gillam Designs<br />

Lesley Gillam has a stunning shop consisting of five rooms set in a beautiful courtyard<br />

which is tucked away in the village of Exning, just outside Newmarket. It boasts a wide range<br />

of fabrics, wall coverings, soft furnishings, fabulous lighting, floral arrangements and gifts<br />

for the home. Lesley and her team are constantly updating their collection and warmly<br />

welcome both new and old faces.<br />

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY?<br />

For more years than I care to think about. I have always sewn, but as a business I started by<br />

making curtains and blinds from a work room at home when my son was young. He’s now<br />

34!<br />

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INSPIRATION?<br />

I think it mainly comes from my clients themselves. Every one is an individual with unique<br />

likes, dislikes and ways of living their lives. They may say to me that they don’t know what<br />

they want, but finding out what they don’t like and what they are passionate about soon<br />

shows me the way to go.<br />

IF YOU COULD PICK ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?<br />

I think my one word would have to be stylish, although other words such as individualistic,<br />

classic and practical spring to mind.<br />

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?<br />

It has to be the end result. It is a privilege to be invited into someone’s home and for them<br />

to trust me to be able to do the best for them. Everyone has things which are important to<br />

them, such as that inherited piece from Granny or a cherished painting by little Tommy for<br />

example, and it is imperative they are respected and worked into the finished scheme as the<br />

client wants.<br />

WHAT IS YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR SOMEONE LOOKING TO RESTYLE THEIR INTERIOR?<br />

Step back and thing about how you live your life and again the practicality of your home.<br />

It is no good adding things into a room if the layout is fundamentally wrong or if you are<br />

always moving things or tripping over them. Storage is imperative.<br />

WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE?<br />

Interior design is just the tip of the iceberg for me! I also offer room styling, bespoke<br />

curtains and blinds, and sourcing those elusive items to complete your look. In fact, I also<br />

have a beautiful selection of hats, fascinators and jewellery and much, much more.<br />

WHAT DO YOU PREDICT IS GOING TO BE PROMINENT NEXT YEAR?<br />

Neutrals have been big and will remain so. They make a safe choice for those bigger<br />

purchases such as sofas, curtains or carpets, especially in economic uncertainty, but also<br />

make a great base for splashes of trendy colour like acid green or amethyst. Greys are<br />

great, through to storm blue, glowing with metallic and pearlescent hues.<br />

When Hiring a Tree Surgeon<br />

Simon Luckings, of S P Landscapes & Tree Contractors, talks to<br />

us about what you should consider when hiring a tree surgeon<br />

1. ARE THEY INSURED?<br />

A reputable tree surgery company<br />

should be able to provide a copy of their<br />

Employers’ & Public Liability insurance<br />

before any works are carried out. The<br />

recommended minimum cover is £5 million,<br />

but we have insurance for up to £10 million.<br />

2. DO THEY WORK TO BRITISH<br />

STANDARD BS3998:2010 TREE WORK –<br />

RECOMMENDATIONS?<br />

All competent tree surgeons should be<br />

undertaking works to this standard, where<br />

applicable. This may be difficult for the<br />

client to check, but a company which holds<br />

ARB Approved Contractor status with<br />

the Arboricultural Association, means that<br />

they are regularly monitored by industry<br />

specialists. We provide a copy of our ARB<br />

Approved Contractor certificate with all<br />

our quotations, but clients can check to<br />

see if a contractor is ARB Approved on the<br />

Arboricultural Association website, which is<br />

3. WILL THEY PROVIDE A WRITTEN<br />

QUOTATION WITH A FIXED PRICE?<br />

We provide a written quotation that details<br />

all of the works with the prices clearly stated<br />

and that they are subject to VAT. Any<br />

contractor that does not provide a written<br />

quotation should be avoided, as there may<br />

be difficulties if the work is not completed<br />

as the client had hoped, and the contractor<br />

is in disagreement. It is also essential to<br />

confirm in the quote what will happen with<br />

the timber and brushwood resulting from<br />

the works and if you want this removed<br />

from site, make sure this is detailed in the<br />

quote.<br />

4. ARE THE STAFF QUALIFIED TO UNDERTAKE<br />

THE WORK?<br />

If a company holds the relevant insurance,<br />

and is an ARB Approved Contractor, it<br />

would have been vetted to ensure their staff<br />

are adequately qualified. The client can still<br />

ask to see the individual staff qualifications<br />

and they can check these online through<br />

the NPTC or Lantra Awards websites,<br />

which are the main two training providers<br />

for chainsaw and aerial tree work. All our<br />

staff carry individual NPTC skills cards that<br />

list their qualifications and have photograph<br />

identification.<br />

5. CAN THEY PROVIDE A NAME AND NUMBER<br />

OF A REFEREE FOR COMPLETED TREE WORK<br />

OF A SIMILAR NATURE?<br />

Our current client list includes Forest<br />

Heath and South Cambridgeshire District<br />

Councils, Cambridge City Council, The<br />

Forestry Commission, Flagship Housing<br />

Association and Godolphin for commercial<br />

Do you feel like a valued customer? Chloe Gimblett, from<br />

Personally I love cars, I love driving cars,<br />

I love motor racing, and I love working<br />

with and selling cars. Perhaps this makes<br />

me different from other ladies, however, I<br />

understand that when it comes to buying a<br />

used car, it can seem like a risky business.<br />
