The Hallé Presents... 

Star Wars 

On Saturday 29th October, one of the 

UK’s most celebrated symphony 

orchestras presents a unique evening of 

music. It begins ‘a long time ago in a 

galaxy far, far away…’ 

The Hallé Presents… The Music of Star 

Wars will take listeners at Manchester’s 

Bridgewater Hall through some of the 

most dramatic and memorable pieces 

from Star Wars Episodes I to VII. 

The orchestra will cover unforgettable 

themes from each of the movies, scored 

by John Williams. From The Phantom 

Menace’s monumental ‘Duel of the 

Fates’, performed with the Hallé Youth 

Choir, through to ‘Rey’s Theme’ from the 

2015 film The Force Awakens. Along the 

way you can enjoy music from wellloved 

scenes, including the famous 

‘Cantina Band’. 

The Hallé’s vivacious presenter Tom 

Redmond will guide the audience 

through the evening, with conductor 

Stephen Bell at the helm of the 80- 

strong orchestra. 

Star Wars costumes are encouraged. 

There will be a pre-concert talk, ‘The 

Science behind Star Wars’, presented in 

partnership with Manchester Science 

Festival, which is free to concert ticket 

holders.

Enchanting events at 

Chester Zoo 

Don’t miss two very special events coming up at Chester Zoo this autumn. 

At The Enchantment of Chester Zoo, you have until dusk to break the spell… 

An evil sorcerer has cast a spell on Chester Zoo, trying to steal away all of the superpowers of 

the nocturnal animals. Follow the wise old owl and find out how to break the spell. On the way 

you’ll meet a host of performers, musicians, aerialists, acrobats and animals along the way to 

help you with the magic. 

The Enchantment of Chester Zoo is brought to life by pioneering theatre company Wild 

Rumpus, who run celebrated immersive events like the Lost Carnival and the Just So Festival. 

The Enchantment of Chester Zoo runs from 22nd – 31st October. Free to Zoo visitors but book

The Lanterns at Chester Zoo returns during November and December for its fifth year. 

See your children’s eyes light up and their imaginations run wild as they travel through a 

constellation of stars and on to see the magnificent animal lanterns. There are zoo favourites, 

local woodland creatures and a host of puppets and festival characters to meet. Take a stroll 

through the enchanted forest and see if you can spot Santa on his sleigh. 

The Lanterns at Chester Zoo is designed and performed by The Lantern Company, creators of 

spectacular illuminated events across the world, for audiences of all ages. 

Running on 25th – 27th November, 2nd – 3rd December, 9th – 11th December and 

16th – 23rd December. Tickets are strictly limited so book early.

Bridgewater Hall 

This autumn, escape the bustle (and the 

weather!) and discover some of the 

world’s finest classical music at 

Manchester's premier concert venue, 

The Bridgewater Hall. The 

International Concert Series brings 

world class artists to the North West, 

including visiting orchestras, recitalists, 

period instrument and choral groups. 

The season opens on Friday 28th 

October with a chance to hear the 

Northern premiere of James MacMillan’s 

Stabat Mater sung by The Sixteen, one of 

the world’s most celebrated choirs. Then 

in November, The Philharmonia 

Orchestra make a welcome return with 

pianist Alice Sarah Ott and their 

charismatic conductor Vladimir 

Ashkenazy. Their Russian programme 

includes Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto 

No. 1 and explores the stormy emotions 

of youth and lost love in Rachmaninov’s 

Symphony No. 1 

December features a real festive treat. 

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, 

famed around the world for the BBC 

broadcast of their Christmas Eve service, 

present an evening of favourite carols, 

alongside music by Fauré, Duruflé and 

Howells.

Hearth Festival at Gladstone’s Library 

Fancy a literature festival with a 

difference? How about one set in the 

cosy common room of a beautiful Grade I 

listed library? Hearth Festival returns to 

Gladstone’s Library in Hawarden from 

Saturday 29th – Sunday 30th October. 

Take a notepad and a cup of tea (or 

something stronger) and settle down to 

listen to a selection of successful authors 

talk about writing, publishing and 

everything in between. Whether you’re a 

writer and want some tips, or you just 

want to try something new, you will love 

this friendly festival. 

On Saturday, poet, novelist and shortstory 

writer Pippa Goldschmidt discusses 

her former career as an astrophysicist 

and how the hidden lives of scientists 

can be exposed in literature. 

Internationally acclaimed writer Rose 

Collis talks about, and performs, some of 

her favourite characters from 

‘alternative’ history through stories, 

vignettes and songs before a panel of 

reading and reflection with all Hearth 

speakers. 

On Sunday, Irene Zabytko shares the 

experience of writing The Sky Unwashed, 

a novel praised for its depiction of 

Chernobyl refugees returning to their 

still-irradiated villages. This is 

accompanied by a screening of her 

award-winning film. 

Then Nadene Ghouri, a multi-award 

winning journalist who specialises in 

human rights issues, shares the secrets 

of writing a bestselling memoir with a 

unique impact.

Tip Top Theatre 

Since 2007 Tip Top Productions have made their home in The Forum 

Studio Theatre. The delightful 140 seat studio theatre in the heart of 

Chester had previously been part of the Gateway Theatre. Thousands of 

theatre fans visit each year for original and touring shows, ranging from 

classic and popular drama to musicals and their sell-out annual 

pantomime. 

This year’s panto is a fully professional production of Jack and the 

Beanstalk. Comedian Kevin Dewsbury will play the dame, having just 

returned from a successful run of his show at the Edinburgh Fringe 

Festival. Taking the lead role is Joe Woolford, a contestant on BBC’s The 

Voice and one half of Joe and Jake, who performed the UK’s 2016 

Eurovision entry. 

Jack and the Beanstalk runs from 9th December – 6th January.

Tatton’s spectacular deer rut

Whether you’re grabbing your running 

shoes or grabbing a great place to 

spectate, don’t miss the MBNA Chester 

Marathon on Sunday 2nd October. 

Runners will take in all of the city’s iconic 

landmarks before heading into the 

Cheshire and North Wales countryside, 

and finishing at Chester Racecourse. 

The World Rally Championships comes 

to Wales on 27th – 30th October, as the

Chester Christmas Market 

(November–December). A real highlight 

in the holiday calendar, the market 

brings over 70 festive wooden chalets 

into the heart of the city, packed to the 

rafters with food, treats and gifts from 

local artisans and producers.

The beginning of autumn marks the start 

of rutting season for the deer at Tatton 

Park. Visitors to the parkland, set in rural 

Cheshire, can enjoy one of the finest 

settings in the country to witness this 

spectacular event. 

Tatton has been a deer park since 1290, 

and is now home to over 400 red deer 

and fallow deer within its 1,000 acres. 

Preparations for this annual challenge 

have already started. The male deer 

can be seen ‘fraying’ the velvet off their 

hardened antlers by rubbing them on 

trees and branches. Their necks begin 

to noticeable swell and thicken, 

strengthening them for potential 

clashes. 

Chester Antiques Fair 

Autumn visitors have a chance to watch 

the deer in contest, roaring and ‘parallel 

walking’ to display their strength and 

prowess. Then comes the rut itself, as 

stags lock antlers and battle 

commences. 

You can see the rut until the end of 

October, when the victor is clear from the 

size of his harem - the number of female 

deer he has successfully attracted. 

Visitors to the parkland will be able to 

watch this spectacle throughout autumn 

and are asked not to approach or disturb 

the deer.

Chester Antiques Show returns this month, bringing three centuries of 

art and antiques to Chester Racecourse. The show runs from 13th – 16th 

October, displaying a wide range of objects from classic Georgian pieces 

to mid-20th-Century Modernism. 

With over 40 stalls across three floors of the County Grandstand, you’ll 

find everything from Art Deco lighting to ornate Victorian mirrors, from 

vintage cocktail dresses to stunning diamond necklaces, and from 

nineteenth century watercolours to exotic French bronze statues. 

One rare treat this year is an original painting by British actor, comedian 

and member of The Goon Show, Michael Bentine. The picture is being 

sold along with a letter by Bentine, and is 

priced at £1,400. Elsewhere in the fair, prices 

range from under £25 to over £25,000, so 

there’s plenty of choice, whether you’re a 

curious first-timer or an expert buyer. 

Chester Racecourse offers ample on-site 

parking, and several food options, with 

Restaurant 1539, the Turf Restaurant, Joy’s 

Bar and The White Horse.

illuminated event ‘The Lanterns’ takes place with lots of new experiences to 

enjoy. Take a zebra crossing through a constellation of stars to see the zoo animal 

lanterns, stroll through the enchanted forest to meet the colourful and festive 

characters and catch a glimpse of Santa on his sleigh.

Clonter Carol 

There’s a radical retelling of Charles 

Dickens’ festive classic coming to Clonter 

Opera on Saturday 26th November. 

The Lock In Christmas Carol was described 

in The Independent as ‘a full-on show of 

such blazing energy and joyous ingenuity 

you scarcely ponder on the apparent 

madness of trying to marry folk dance 

and hip hop’. 

The story takes place on Christmas Eve. 

The regulars of Ye Olde Fighting Cocks are 

excited about the night ahead. 

To their dismay the landlady, 

Jasmineezer Scrooge, has more 

profitable ambitions. She’s is preparing to 

launch her new business, ‘Jazzles’ 

nightclub, instead. Will her plans ruin 

Christmas for the local community? Will 

she come to her senses? And how do you 

combine folk dance and hip hop?

Chester Music Society are bringing a 

packed programme of professional and 

amateur musicians to Chester this 

autumn. The society’s 71st season kicks 

off with three major concerts in October 

and November. 

The Odysseus Piano Trio will be 

performing at St Mary's Creative Space in 

October, followed a month later by 

international performers Sarah-Jane 

Bradley (viola) and John Lenehan (piano). 

Also in November, the Society's choir will 

join forces with the acclaimed Liverpool 

Sinfonia in Chester cathedral for a 

dramatic performance of Handel’s 

Messiah. 

Four further chamber concerts will follow 

at St Mary's. In December the Chester 

Music Society Choir will perform at 

Chester Cathedral with poet, raconteur 

and ‘the Bard of Barnsley’, radio 

performer Ian McMillan. 

Look out for the Society's Club 

performances throughout the season, 

showcasing local performers like the City 

of Chester Brass Band and Wrexham 

County Youth Choir. 

November sees the Chester Young 

Musicians of the Year Competition taking 

place at the King's School, with entries 

welcomed from young musicians from

Weston Wonderland 

One farm house in Weston, near Crewe, is 

fast becoming a must-see Christmas 

attraction. For the fourth successive year 

local student Graham Witter will deck out 

the house, farm buildings and garden 

into a Winter Wonderland for all to enjoy. 

Visit the working dairy farm from 1st – 

28th December to see it lit up in festive 

splendour. Catch a visit from Santa each 

Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening, and 

pose for a selfie in the sleigh. Explore the 

Christmas Grotto and enjoy a mince pie. 

For the first time the wonderland will 

feature a vintage ‘Mr. Whippy’ van in 

extraordinary yuletide decoration. 

The Wonderland has already raised 

£17,000 to support the work of the 

Donna Louise Children’s Hospice, in 

memory of Graham’s sister Jessica.

Shakespeare at Chester Cathedral 

Spend a Weekend with Shakespeare this October at Chester Cathedral. The 

cathedral is celebrating the bard’s 400th birthday with events on Saturday 

15th and Sunday 16th October. 

A talk on Saturday 15th by writer and Shakespeare expert Dr. Paul 

Edmondson is followed by a concert inspired by the great man’s life and 

passions, performed with Chester Cathedral Nave Choir. 

Then on Sunday 16th the cathedral is holding a special poetry mass, where 

all are welcome to attend and hear readings of Shakespeare’s sonnets. 

The much-loved Christmas Tree Festival is back for its fourth year in 2016. 

From the end of November, the cloisters will be filled with more than 50 

beautiful Christmas trees, lovingly decorated by local schools and 

businesses. 

Escape the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and come admire the 

tree-lined winter walkways, open daily from 26th November until 8th 

January. Entry is free, and all visitors get to vote for their favourite tree.
