EDITOR'S NOTE
Amanda Brown
E D I T O R - I N - C H I E F
Reading about previous decades, I find that, in a way, I'm
lucky to have been born into the second millennium.
Women have much more freedom than they did in the '20s,
and our technology is amazingly advanced from what it was
only fifty years ago.
But I've also found that previous ages were much more
innocent. The twenties, thirties, and even the forties were
saturated with good, moral truths. Yes, of course there were
those during these ages who pushed boundaries. Flappers in
the twenties dared to go a little higher, a little crazier; teens in
the fifties tried desperately not to be "different" than their
peers; and the hippies of the 1960s disintegrated social
norms, until now we are . . . well, where we are.
And yet, in all of this, I see a greater Hand that is at work.
There is a growing lack of appreciation for history. But in
history, we learn what worked and what didn't. We learn to
be grateful for what we have. And we learn that "everything
works together for good." (Romans 8:28) I know I personally
am so relieved when I remember that there's a God up in
Heaven, weaving the tapestry of history together piece by
piece.
And I'm one tiny thread of it that could make a small
difference. And so are you!
The Sixties:
The Beginning of the End?
by Amanda Brown
Beginnings
After the war, America was booming,
having exploded out of WWII even
stronger and richer than before.
Soldiers returned home to their wives
and the population soared, bringing
babies into the world that would grow
up in the ’50s. These children enjoyed
the ever-expanding wealth their parents
and grandparents had fought to keep.
But wealth also brings a loosening of
morals, a slackening of caution.
By the time the ‘60s rolled around,
America was pervaded with adults
carrying loose morals and uncertainty
as to the good-bad spectrum. A few of
these adults went on to become
hippies, the tie-dye, bell-bottom-pantswearing,
peace-sign-yielding cartoons
that we giggle at today.
But back then they were nothing to
laugh at.
Music Mania
One of the biggest part of the 1960s was
the music. The Beatles brought flocks of
devoted followers to their stages while
Elvis scrambled to extend his dying
popular status. The Beatles brought on a
plague of Beatlemania, the symptoms of
which were uncontrollable hysteria and
A slackening of
moral restrains
ensued, and no one
was exactly sure
what was good and
bad anymore.
"Wealth brings
a loosening of
morals, as well
as a slackening
of caution."
high-pitched screaming by American
teenage girls. At one point, an incredible
two million Beatles’ records were sold in
a period of nine days.
Researchers from the British Journal of
Clinical Psychology stated that
Beatlemania was “the passing reaction of
predominantly young adolescent females
to group pressures of such a kind that
meet their special emotional needs.”
Basically, these females felt that they
weren’t getting the attention they needed
so they went to their friends for the
emotional stability they needed. What
their friends did in their spare time was
scream at The Beatles, so why wouldn’t
you scream at them too?
Breakfast at Tiffany's
& Other Movies/Shows
When people turned on their televisions,
they tuned in to shows like Hogan’s
Heroes, Flipper, The Brady Bunch,
Doctor Who, Gilligan’s Island, Twilight
Zone, and Green Acres. Breakfast at
Tiffany’s came out during this time
period, as well as The Jungle Book and
The Sound of Music.
Blake Edwards, the director of Breakfast
at Tiffany’s, said that the opening scene
was the hardest to shoot. Factors like
crowd control and a near-electrocution
scare made the seemingly simple scene a
pain to capture. In addition, Audrey
Hepburn disliked pastries. A 1960 New
York Times report said it best: “Miss
Hepburn, it developed, had no affection
for the Danish, preferring ice cream at
Schrafft’s.”
Science & Tech
The Space Race was the competitive
heartbeat of the 1960s. Although the
Soviets ended up sending the first men
into outer space, America came back
with an exciting mission to the moon
which was debatably more impressive.
During this time period, "The Big
Three" in American car production
experience soaring sales. But also
during this time period, Japanese cars
grew increasingly widespread to
purchase.
DRAMs were invented . . . which is a
very complicated part in your
computer. This invention brought
Americans one step closer to the effect,
slim tech we enjoy today.
The DARPA (Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency) also began
work on a project that would one day
be the Internet, which we all love and
know.
Cool teenagers carried pocket transistor
radios with them . . . which were like
the chunky grandfather of the iPod.
Teens liked it because it was easily
carried and had a "space age" look.
REMEMBER THIS
The Truth About the Sixties
I was going to glaze over the darker side
of the Sixties, but due to events
occurring in America right now, I
thought it only my duty to go over the
age which, I think, started the mess we
have found ourselves in.
Americans are in hot water, and I feel
that half our country doesn't
understand how we got here. The other
half are just a group of frogs swimming
around in the hot pot of water, not
realizing they're being fried alive. So,
here's the truth about the Sixties.
The Sixties was a time of revolution in
many areas. A slackening of moral
restrains ensued, and no one was
exactly sure what was good and bad
anymore. The youth revolted against
the conservatism that characterized the
'50s. Experimentation was encouraged,
leading people to do things no one ever
though would be done.
Drug use soared into popularity, and
authority was questioned perhaps more
than any other time in American
history.
The warped idea of "peace" swarmed
American neighborhoods. War protests
popped up everywhere, and many
young "draft-dodgers" shirked their
duties to their country. The American
Communist Party originally pushed the
idea of anti-war sit-ins, but soon it fled
to universities.
Interestingly, the song Moon River was
almost removed from the movie but
when Hepburn heard about it, she
refused with an animated, “Over my
dead body!” Another interesting fact is
that the man who voiced Fred Flintstone
acted the part of Sally Tomato.
The Dollar Stretch
The average price of a home was
$13,000. You could send a letter to a
friend for four pennies and purchase a
dozen eggs for $0.57. Two quarters would
buy a gallon of milk, and a gallon of
regular gas was only thirty-one cents.
Urban unrest and shootings soared in
statistics unlike ever before. It was the
beginning of a new low for American
society, and we can see the fruit of
these seeds coming to full fruition in
our modern-day culture.
On a positive note, keep doing what
you're supposed to do. My grandpa
always tells me not to worry a bit
because I'm safe in Christ. If you're a
Christian, you're safe in Him too. We
will come out of this one way or the
other.
Stay encouraged!
STYLE
THE RUNWAY
The Sixties brought about a fashion revolution. Hems soared in
some areas, while in others bell bottoms reined supreme. Your
clothing dictated whether you were a hippy, politician, or
belonged to a music group. When you think of sixties style, flowers
and boho hair ornaments probably come to mind, as well as go-go
boots and tie dye.
Chic or Cheap?
Brigette Bardot became the new
Jackie. She was everything Jackie
wasn’t. Some called her tacky
while others called her bold.
Unlike Jackie’s classic wedding
gown, Brigitte wore a pink
gingham dress with lace. Some
said she was cheap by doing that
but others picked up some of her
style, mainly the lace.
Jackie Kennedy
In the early 1960s, Jackie Kennedy was
one of the top style icons. She was a
very classy lady. Her simple style was
described as clean and well fitting, and
additionally her outfits were always
paired with the perfect accessories.
The Rise of
the Pantsuit
Dresses were a favorite with
women still, but some ladies
started wearing pantsuits
(although they became more
popular in later years). They were
usually found in very bring
colors, like yellows, pinks and
blues.
She wore sensible kitten heels although
many women following her fashion
trends opted for higher heels. Jackie
was one of the last celebrities to wear a
hat with almost any outfit.
Sadly after her husband, President
Kennedy, was killed, she left the public
eye so she could raise her children.
Teen Style
Teens in the '60s started wearing shorter
dresses. Some wore Mary Jane straps on
their shoes, while others wore kitten heels.
Mini skirts and dresses became popular
and were worn with go go boots. Go go
boots were thigh high and showed off your
long legs while still keeping a tiny air of
modesty. Because the '50s were all about
being a miniature adult, many teens leaned
toward looking younger, and looking like
babydolls was very popular.
Follow Suit
Men kept it classy and stuck to suits and
ties. Some men wore high water pants to
show off their socks. Cuff links were a
man's pearl necklace; they were very
common and very stylish. A rack of thin
ties and a few fedoras could be found in
many men's closets.
MAKEUP BIN SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016
The 1950s and the 1960s
were a very similar time
when it came to makeup. The
graceful eye makeup—sleek
eyeliner, thick mascara, and
popping colors, et cetera.
The heavy powder and a
pretty pale blush continued
to be considered fashionable
throughout this interesting decade.
Fake eyelashes started to become
popular and were worn on the top
and bottom lashes. The main
color pallate for eye shadow
were variations of blue, gray,
and white.
A lot of women wore lush shades like
blue and green, however, which were
considered very edgy and fashionable.
Eyeliner was considered a must-have
and was drawn on in thick, double
lines.
In conclusion,
the '60s was a very
important time for
makeup exploration and
helped women to develop
many of the styles we have
today.
Women weren’t as bold with their
mouths as in past years—deep red lips
in the '40s, for example. In many eras,
the mouth was the main focus. In the
'60s, a simple light red or pink lip
satisfied the majority of women.
"For the Bold"
the story of doritos
By Julia Ryan
The original Doritos chip was discovered
in DisneyLand in California during the
early 1960s. The Mexican restaurant Casa
de Fritos wanted to try something new.
They used their surplus tortillas and fried
them, adding basic seasoning for flavor.
The Vice President of Marketing of
Frito-Lay noticed their popularity quickly
and made a deal to produce them.
Doritos were released nationwide in 1966
and were the first tortilla chip to be
launched nationally in the United States.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court later
ruled that the study did not meet scientific
standards and could not be presented as
evidence.
Over the years, the chip has changed, logo
brand has shifted, but the flavors
continuously become bolder and odder.
Through it all though, Doritos chip will
always remain, Doritos.
The name came from the Spanish word
doradito, meaning "golden brown," which
is exactly what everyone wants their
Doritos to be like.
Doritos took on quickly, bringing rapid
popularity. Nevertheless, in 1994 the
company spent $50 million to redesign
Doritos to make the chips larger and
thinner. They also rounded the edges of
the chip. The design change was the result
of a two-year market research study that
involved 5,000 chip eaters. (LIKE LETS
LAUGH HERE) Each chip was also given
more seasoning, bringing in their goal for
a stronger flavor.
The company was sued in 2003 by Charles
Grady, who claimed that his throat had
been damaged because of eating Doritos.
According to him, the shape and rigidity
of the chips made them inherently
dangerous. Grady attempted to admit into
evidence a study by a former chemistry
professor that calculated how best to safely
swallow the chips.
The
Vietnam
War
In 1964, Congress authorized President Johnson to take “all necessary measures” to protect the
United States from their Communist North Vietnamese enemies. This was called the Gulf of
Tonkin resolution. It was not the same as a declaration of war, but it was interpreted that way.
Previous to this point, presidents Kennedy and Eisenhower had been sending military advisors to
the South Vietnamese government. At this time there were about 16,000 military personnel in
Vietnam. The draft was in place immediately after the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. By 1966, nearly
500,000 men had been drafted and sent to Vietnam. However, the Vietnam War was very
unpopular with the younger generation. Many men burned their draft cards or moved to Canada
to avoid getting drafted. In 1968, the North Vietnamese launched the Tet Offensive. They attacked
hundreds of cities and towns.
Although the South Vietnamese and Americans beat them back, American citizens were stunned
at the fierceness of the attack. They had not been told how strong the North Vietnamese forces
were. After this time, the Vietnam War became increasingly unpopular. The fighting continued
until 1973, when the majority of American troops were pulled out of Vietnam, leaving only a few
advisors left to help the South Vietnamese. However, the North Vietnamese violated the peace
agreement, and in 1975 they took over South Vietnam.
The last few American advisors were pulled out of Vietnam at this time, and Vietnam has been a
unified Communist country ever since.
The
Cold War
Technically, the Vietnam War was part of the
Cold War, but there were other incidents in the
1960s that were related to the Cold War, most
notably, the Bay of Pigs invasion. In 1961, Fidel
Castro was the Communist dictator of Cuba.
President Kennedy allowed the CIA to train
Cuban forces to overthrow Castro’s regime.
Getty Images
On April 16th, the Cuban forces landed on a beach in the Bay of Pigs and started fighting.
Although they won initially, Castro’s forces soon overwhelmed them. Midway through the
invasion, President Kennedy withdrew American help, leaving the Cuban forces without the
people they needed. Castro imprisoned most of the Cuban forces and the invasion was a failure.
The next year, Russian dictator Khrushchev and Cuban dictator Castro made a secret
agreement to put nuclear weapons in Cuba that could be fired at the United States. When the
Americans found out about this agreement, they were furious.
They demanded that the USSR remove the nuclear missiles. For several weeks, life was tense. At
any moment, the world might erupt into nuclear war. Eventually, the Cubans and Russians
agreed to remove the nuclear weapons, as long as the Americans removed some of their
weapons from Turkey and Italy and promised to not invade Cuba without a reason. The
American government agreed and tensions eased. This is known as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The6 Day War
The Six-Day War occurred in June 1967. Israeli intelligence discovered that the Egyptians were
grouping in the Sinai Peninsula and preparing to strike. The Israelis acted first and led an
airstrike on the Egyptian airfields, and then marched into the Sinai Peninsula. The Egyptians
were overwhelmed and were forced to retreat as the Israelis pursued them. The Egyptians
called on Jordan and Syria to help them, but once again, Israel got to the fighting first. The
fighting then centered around Jerusalem.
Israel did not have control of all of Jerusalem, only part. They surrounded the rest of the city
and attacked the Jordanian forces there and conquered the rest of Jerusalem and the West Bank
of the Jordan River. Syrian forces were entrenched on the Golan Heights and Israeli forces
attacked them too, driving them off. The fighting started on June 5th, and was done by June
10th. A ceasefire was signed on June 11th.
The Arab troops suffered incredible losses, while the Israelis suffered only minimal losses. Israel
tripled its land area by gaining the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank (including
East Jerusalem), and the Golan Heights. This is one of the shortest wars in history. It shows that
God is still watching over His chosen people.
