Lamb
Dhansak
BY AWARD WINNING
CHEF ABDUS SHAHID
Prep Time:
30 mins
Cooking Time:
1 to 2 hours
6 servings
Dhansak is a popular Indian curry made
from meat, lentils and flavoured with spices
including cumin and ginger. It’s mild, sweet
and rich with just enough heat to satisfy
most tastes.
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas 3 (130C fan).
2. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan.
Add the lamb and fry in two batches until browned.
Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set
aside.
3. Add the remaining oil to the pan. Add the onion
and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until beginning to soften.
4. Meanwhile, place the ginger, garlic and chilli
into a small food processor and blend until finely
chopped.
5. Bash the cardamom pods with the end of a
rolling pin to split the husks, then remove the seeds
and grind them to a fine powder in a pestle and
mortar. Add to the pan with the remaining spices
and the garlic and ginger mixture.
Ingredients
• 3 tbsp sunflower oil
• 1 kg/2lb 4oz diced lamb shoulder or leg, or a
mixture of both
• 2 onions, chopped
• 25g/1oz fresh root ginger, peeled
• 4 garlic cloves, peeled
• 2 red chillies, seeds removed, chopped
• 10 green cardamom pods
• 1½ tbsp ground cumin
• 1½ tbsp ground coriander
• ½ tbsp ground turmeric
• 1 x 400g/14oz can chopped tomatoes
• 200ml/7fl oz beef stock
• 75g/2½oz red lentils
• 3 tbsp honey
• Salt and pepper
5. Add the remaining ingredients to the pan and
add the lamb. Bring to the boil, then cover and
place in the oven to simmer for 1.5-2 hours, or until
tender. Check the seasoning and serve with
boiled rice.
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… Ok so firstly a reminder about
me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 43, a mother and a grandmother.
Well Hi there!
Welcome to my 1st
Anniversary column
for Bounce!
It’s been a whole year
since my first column
and blog post.
So in honour of this
little milestone, this
month I’m talking
about dressing for
celebrations when
you’re over forty.
I’m a lover of all styles but I’m
particularly fond of the 50s and 60’s.
Dressing for events when you’re
older can be a minefield, however
my first rule is to always lay good
foundations.
Underwear is so
important. Locally,
Debenhams and John
Lewis have a great
range of shape wear.
Here are a few outfit
ideas with everyone’s
problem areas in
mind like the tops of
arms and décolleté.
All the outfits and
accessories shown
are from Mango and Zara.
As always, they are aimed
at the slightly more alternative woman
over forty!
However, if you’d like some style advice
then please get in touch over on my
blog and will be happy to help.
In Love with Italian Fashion…
In November 2012 Corinna Green opened the doors to NANOOK in
Sudbury, with the aim of creating one of Suffolk’s most exciting fashion
boutique for women.
In November last year she added a second shop in Bury St Edmunds.
Both shops have a strikingly different look and a European feel. The
clothes NANOOK sell are predominantly Made In Italy, home to the
world’s most famous fashion houses.
They are hand picked and mostly exclusive to NANOOK in the UK. They
are all extremely flattering and wearable but also highly affordable
without compromising quality. If that wasn’t enough, every style comes
only in a very small quantities, so customers can walk home with an
almost unique piece!
Prices range between £30 and £300 for
TIPS & ADVICE THIS SEASON
AUTUMN WINTER
scarves
As I write this it’s currently 26
degrees and I’ve already moved my
laptop twice to avoid glare from
the sun.
So you can imagine how strange it feels to be
writing about the colder weather coming about.
Hopefully, by the time you read this it will at least,
kind of, maybe, feel like autumn. Let’s assume
it does...
BY DANIEL FRANCIS
Autumn! The air is cooler, the wind a little
stronger and you’re looking for that extra bit of
warmth on the weekends or comfort in
the evening. The solution? Scarves.
Yes I mean scarves plural. A scarf can help add a
16

OCTOBER OCTOBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | ISSUE #48 | #48 FASHION
FASHION
little bit of detail and colour during the
months when you’ll largely be wearing
the same jacket or coat.
They’re also perfect for those
transitional weeks pre-jacket.
Have a look at some of my favourites
spotted on the high-street...
Silk Scarves
Are perfect for the evening. Pair one
with a blazer for a smart casual look
perfect for meeting up with friends at
the pub or when heading out for dinner.
Lighter Scarves
Stores like River Island and Topman
have a great selection of lighter scarves
that can easily be thrown on top of a
light jumper or with a shirt.
They’re a great way to add a little extra
texture and pattern to your outfit.
The Classics
Of course we can’t forget the classics. Knitted
scarves will keep you warm and protect your face
during those colder, harsher days on the horizon.
It’s best to have a couple of go to options in navy
and grey to be sure you’re always covered but
don’t shy away from some checks, stripes and
brighter colours.
For more information check out my blog at
Timings and order of the day
BY CATHERINE STARLING-GUNFIELD
There is a fine line
between orderly and
making sure everything
happens when it should
and a ‘military’ style
operation.
Timings and order of your
day are important but so is a
relaxed fun atmosphere, so
here are some tips to help
you organise those important
moments and make sure you
arrive at the church on time,
relaxed and ready to enjoy
your day!
Getting ready
It’s so important to plan this part of the day well. Hair,
make-up, getting into your dress, travel and photos can
take up much more time than you think. Best to be on
the safe side, decide on a time frame and add an hour,
especially if there are little ones to get ready!
Location
If you are travelling between venues plan your route
beforehand, time it, have a plan B and liaise with your
supplier to ensure a seamless journey.
Traditions
Traditions to consider; the first dance, speeches, cutting
the cake, bouquet throw and carriages. Speak with your
venue when planning these, this is your day and these can
happen when you want however the below are usual:
• BOUQUET THROW – before the breakfast
• SPEECHES – after the breakfast
• CUTTING THE CAKE – after the speeches
• FIRST DANCE – before the evening entertainment
• CARRIAGES - midnight
THE EXPERT ~ NEAL
LAVER FROM NEAL LAVER
PHOTOGRAPHY
Q: From a photography point
of view, what is the most
important thing couples
should consider when putting
together their itinerary for
their big day?
A: A big consideration is the
time of the ceremony and the
time of year. This is especially
relevant for winter weddings
when you could loose daylight
by 3:30pm. The remedy here
is to have an early ceremony
so that you can have some
pictures taken in daylight.
Think about the group
photographs, try to limit
this to a maximum of
ten combinations. Your
photographer will be able to
complete the task quickly, your
guests won’t be bored, and the
couple will have more time to
mingle with guests.
A: Whilst this can be a nice
thing to do, it’s very time
consuming. It’s every guest
at your wedding in a queue
waiting to greet you, this really
does take up so much time!
Rebecca Ferguson
From the very lowest moment in her life the extraordinarily talented Rebecca
Ferguson is back with her new album, ‘Superwoman’ and UK tour. Rachel
Ducker speaks to Rebecca about her career to date and what is to come...
27

OCTOBER 2016 OCTOBER | ISSUE 2016 #48 | | ISSUE REBECCA #48FERGUSON
The amazing Rebecca Ferguson,
whose voice has been compared
to Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone
and Dusty Springfield, has recently
announced her rescheduled UK
tour dates, which will kick off this
month.
Her new album forged from
heartbreak and a tale of lover’s
abandonment combined with the
bittersweet joy of giving birth to his
child, Superwoman is infused with
the strength of a woman who has
finally taken control.
Following her last album ‘Lady Sings
the Blues’ and Rebecca’s amazing debut
album ‘Heaven’ which sold over a million
copies, she is currently working on a new
album, which is almost complete.
Rachel Ducker caught up with the star
about her new album and upcoming tour…
R: Many people will remember you from
the 2010 series of X-Factor, what was the
experience like?
Oh gosh! It was amazing to be honest; I’ve
got lovely memories. It was a good laugh,
but at the same time it was really stressful!
R: I remember watching the series
actually... I voted for you!
Thank you!
R: I must say as a viewer, at times, it is
tense to watch, so I can imagine that
being behind the scenes and actually
being in the competition must have put
extraordinary pressure on you?
Yeah, you have to forget that people at
home are watching, because if you start
thinking about the amount of viewers out
there, you’d just not even go on stage, so I
had to think to myself, ‘I’m just performing
for this room’.
It was just so nerve racking, but at the
same time I think it was perfect for me
because it helped me to grow as an artist
and as a person. It was fun as well, I had
my kids really young, so it was a bit like
being at university, we all lived in the house
together and had a great time.
R: Did you try auditioning anywhere else
before appearing on the X-Factor?
I tried so many! There was Britain’s Got
Talent, I tried the X-Factor twice before
2010, but never got through to the judges
stages and I’ve even had an audition in
New York… I just didn’t get through for any
of them until 2010.
R: When you were younger did you
always want to be a pop star?
Yeah I did you know, my earliest memory
was me trying to write songs, so I’ve
always wanted to sing.
R: I’ve always wanted to do that too, but
unfortunately I don’t have the voice for it.
Some of us have the aspirations but not
the equipment to go with it, so for you,
it must have been a dream come true to
become a pop star?
It was, the X-Factor was surreal… it was
very surreal. I remember being at boot
camp; I think they have an idea of who
they want to go through at this stage.
I kept on moving further backwards on
the stage behind the others, and then
I remember the producer saying ‘no
Rebecca come to the front right in front
of Simon,’ and I said ‘but I can’t Simon
makes me nervous.’ I didn’t realise as
I got through the stages how far
I was getting, throughout the whole
thing I wasn’t aware that it was real
for me.
co-writing your first two albums, how did
it feel to perform someone else’s songs?
I didn’t think I would enjoy it, and I wasn’t
completely for it until I recorded some
demos. I then listened to the songs and
I loved them. I then agreed to do ‘Lady
Sings the Blues’ and it was the right
decision I think.
R: Why did you choose Billie Holiday
songs to cover?
It was stupid of me, but I just couldn’t
believe what was happening.
R: Who were your musical influences
growing up?
I started off listening to Gospel music
actually, which stemmed from my mum.
Then with age I listened to Whitney
Houston and Cher, they were probably
the first records I listened to and I was
absolutely blown away. Tracy Chapman
was a also big influence along with Michael
Jackson.
R: Do you think these people have
influenced your own music style?
I make a conscious choice to not listen
to other people’s music when I write my
albums. Adele’s album came out and I
didn’t buy it until my album was pretty
much done.
I held of buying a few peoples albums,
as I didn’t want to be influenced at all by
anyone else’s sound whilst recording, I
wanted it to be completely me. I go into
my own zone.
R: Your last album ‘Lady Sings the Blues‘
consisted of Billie Holiday covers. After
She was somebody that was
recommended to me; there was talk of a
Billy Holiday film that I was supposed to be
starring in.
R: That must have been quite a
compliment?
Yeah, it was lovely, they approached me,
as they didn’t have anyone that could do
this at the time, but they thought I could
handle the songs.
Initially my pride lead me to say no. I was
like, ‘I write my own music’ and I was very
proud.
Then I started working with the musicians
and I was humbled, as some of these
people had been working with Frank
Sinatra, Ray Charles and Sammy Davis
Junior.
I learned that a lot of other performers
such as Ella Fitzgerald, along with Frank
Sinatra and Sammy Davis Junior also sang
these songs.
R: What kind of music did you listen to
growing up?
I listened to a lot of soul, funk and jazz.
R: Can you tell us anymore about the new
album due for release soon?
I am really excited about the new album,
it’s taken a year and a half to perfect it and
I literally only finished it last night. I am
hopeful, and I just hope everyone likes it as
I’ve really tried to get it right,
I hope I’ve done enough. It’s very personal
about my life and emotions I have been
through with pregnancy and with my
daughter’s father, so I hope it’s an album
that people will relate to.
R: Do you have a favourite track on the
new album that you enjoy listening to?
I’ve got a song on their called ‘Hold Me’ at
the minute it is one of my favourite songs
on the album.
They are coming with me on tour this year.
They usually come at weekends but this
time they are coming for the whole tour.
I don’t like missing them! I can’t cope
without them. It will be fun for them too.
R: What does the rest of the year hold in
store for you once your tour is complete
at the end of October?
I’ve got the new album so people may be
seeing me on television a lot promoting
this, and next year, I actually don’t know
what’s going to happen, there are talks of a
European tour!
R: Thanks Rebecca for your time, I hope
everything goes well with the tour and we
look forward to the release of your new
album.
I think maybe my fans will like it as well,
it was one of the easiest songs I’ve ever
written, and it came out very naturally.
R: Your tour ‘Lady Sings the Blues’ starts
in October and stops by us Ipswich, what
can we expect?
The tour is a mixture of my first album,
second album, ‘Lady Sings the Blues’ and
the new album, so it’s not going to be just
a jazz tour, which I think it was originally
marketed as, but its just a mixture of all my
favourite songs from the albums, as well as
a few classics.
It’s just going to be a fun night and a good
laugh, where people can come and forget
their stresses.
R: Do you enjoy being on tour? As a mum
it must be tough?
Thanks Rachel it’s been lovely chatting
with you.
The Wines
of Austria
There is evidence that wine has been around in Austria for 4000
years, 700 BC and 500 BC. The Romans encouraged vine growing
but the industry collapsed after the fall of The Roman Empire.
Century up to the 1980’s saw massive bulk wine
production, which was light, dilute and acidic.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
In 1985 a major scandal ensued where some
individuals added a little diethylene glycol (antifreeze)
to bulk out the wine. This was known as
the Anti-freeze scandal. Exports collapsed and
Austrian wine was banned in some countries.
It was’nt until about 788 AD that Charlemagne
influenced matters improving. Two of the
most important varieties, Gruner Veltliner and
Welchriesling were growing in Roman times and
are in vogue today.
Wine was very important in the 18th Century but
the 19th Century saw the invasion of pests and
diseases which affected most of Europe.
After World War One Austria was the third
largest producer of wine, albeit bulk wine used
for blending, even with German wine. The 20th
Oddly enough this was the saviour of the industry
in that more attention was given to quality, allied
to a New Marketing Board overseeing the quality
trail. In the 21st Century Austrian wine can now
rank as a reliable high quality wine producer with a
strict inspection regime.
Grape Varieties
White
Gruner Veltliner is the dominant grape. It can
produce good quality easy going wine, as well as
high quality, called Pradikat wines.
36

FOOD & DRINK
OCTOBER 2016 | ISSUE #48 | FOOD & DRINK
The Welschriesling variety is used mainly for dry
and very sweet wines
The Muller-Thurgau is a cross between Sylvaner
and Roter Veltliner, common in Germany.
The Riesling, famous in Germany but less so in
Austria, produces a firm white wine.
Other grapes include Muscat, Rulander (Pinot
Gris) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc)
Red
The Zweigelt is the most important red and can
make powerful wines for ageing.
The Blaufrankisch produces a full
bodied wine.
The Blauer Portugieser is a
fresher, fruitier red for drinking
young.
The Saint Laurent is a
descendant of the Pinot Noir
and is of good quality.
Classifications
The system is very similar to Germany but also
modified after 1985. It is based on measuring
the sugar content of the grapes at harvest and is
measured as levels called KMW. These contents
are translated to titles relating to the amount of
sugar. If grapes are left on the vine and overripen,
they shrivel up and concentrate the sugars. This
can give the winemaker the ability to either make
a sweet wine with low alcohol, or a dry one with
higher alcohol, or all shades between.
Regions
There are 4 generic regions in Austria.
Niederostereich, (Lower Austria), Burgenland,
Steiermark (Styria), and Wein (Vienna) The first 2
account for over 90% of the total production.
Niederostereich
The vineyards lie on the banks of the Danube
and spread to the Slovak border. The main
sub-regions are Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal
and Weinviertal. Gruner Veltliner and Riesling
perform well here and oak is used to good affect.
Burgenland
Lies in the east of Austria near the border with
Hungary. There are 4 sub-regions here but only
the following two are significant.
Neusiedlersee and
Neusiedlersee-Hugelland
These lie near a large lake in the
north. Austumn mists encourage
noble rot and lead to luscious
rich sweet wines. Beerenauslese
and Trockenbeerenauslese are
sold here for lower prices than the
equivalent French or German wines. Other
specialities include Ausbruch, Eiswein and
Strohwein. High quality dry reds are also grown
on the slopes away from the lake.
Mittelburgenland and Sudbergenland
These lie in the rolling hills south west of the
lake and are the source of Austria’s finest red
wines made from Blaufrankisch and blends
of Blaufrankisch with French varieties such as
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. New French oak
barrels are used for the best reds.
Conclusions...
If you want something completely different try Gruner Veltliner , which can be bubbly or still.
The Zweigelt is worth a look for a red.
finest wines around that accompany our menus
perfectly and has said: “It was a magnificent
pleasure to receive the AA Notable Wine List
commendation for the second year. I constantly
strive to improve the list, and aim to cater for
all budgets and tastes, looking for top quality,
value for money, and most of all, wines that are
interesting and out of the ordinary. Recently, I
have added some amazing wines from Eastern
Europe that offer superb quality and value, some
top wines from Bordeaux, and definitely not
forgetting our English wines, that are forever
improving. (We have a nice collection from
right here in Suffolk). My aim is to let our guests
experiment with confidence to taste something
new, or easily find an old favourite.”
The Good Food Guide 2017 was released in
September 2016. The UK’s most trusted and
comprehensive restaurant handbook this year
again rated Tuddenham Mill’s restaurant as one of
the best eating establishments in Suffolk.
The Mill’s restaurant, second
year in a row, was awarded the
AA Notable Wine List 2016
commendation and received a very
high cooking score of 5 from the
UK’s bestselling restaurant guide.
Each year, the AA Restaurant Guide shortlists just
over 200 restaurants from thousands across the
UK, whose wine lists offer excellent quality and
choice. This year the judges were looking for lists
that feature high quality wines and considered
variety across countries, style, the best individual
growers and vintages.
The Mill was one of only two restaurants in
Suffolk to be awarded a cooking score of 5,
which indicates exact cooking techniques and a
degree of ambition; showing balance and depth
of flavour in dishes.
The Good Food Guide 2017 was impressed by
Tuddenham Mill’s setting and Head Chef, Lee
Bye’s talented cooking. “Contemporary touches
such as bare black tables and downlights set the
scene for Lee Bye’s increasingly assured cooking,
which shows his liking for zesty flavours, intricacy
and the trappings of reinvented British cuisine.”
The Good Food Guide includes only the very best
OCTOBER 2016 JUNE | 2014 ISSUE | #48 ISSUE | #20 FOOD & DRINK
The
Ickworth
The Ickworth Hotel is set in
1,800 acres of rolling parkland
designed by Capability Brown.
This month Rachel Ducker was
invited along to The Ickworth Hotel
to discover what makes this venue
stand out from the crowd.
‘The hotel itself is unmistakably grand, all the
high ceilings and aristocratic touches you’d
expect of an 18th century
ancestral home.
The most striking thing
you’ll notice as you
arrive, heading up the
estate’s long drive,
the Rotunda.
At over 100 feet high, this impressive building
was the brainchild of Fredrick Augustus, 4th
Earl of Bristol and the Bishop of Derry (also
known as the Earl-Bishop), created to house
his estranged family and provide galleries
for his art collection, but more about the
history later!
Upon arrival, although grand in its
appearance, there was a pleasant family feel
to this hotel. The Ickworth is a place that
manages to strike a perfect balance between
being truly lovely for the grown ups and
is
44

FOOD FOOD & DRINK DRINK
welcoming kids (and pets) with open arms. I
loved seeing the wellie boots lined up at the
main entrance!
All of the rooms are name after regular guests
during its halcyon days. There are 27 rooms
in the main hotel, which are individually
furnished, in keeping with the classical style of
the building.
“Our room was a first floor room,
named ‘Lord Bristol’ with views
over the beautiful designed gardens
through a large sash window.”
Decorated in traditional country house style, it
is impressive to still see original features, such
as the fireplace. You may spot photos around
the building of how the hotel used to look
before renovation; this is how we noticed the
fireplace had been there for some time.
As it was a warm day, my partner and
I decided to head straight down to the
swimming pool. The pool is a two minute walk
from the main building, with unisex changing
rooms, lockers, hairdryers and complimentary
bags for your wet swimwear. As dusk fell
and it began to get dark, it was a serene
experience to enjoy a quiet swim before
dinner.
Speaking of which, there are two restaurants
at the hotel. The Conservatory, which serves
breakfast, lunch and dinner and the adult-only
fine dining restaurant Frederick’s. Fredrick’s
has more sophisticated fare, serving fine
modern European cuisine by candlelight. As
there was just the two of us, we decided to
eat here. Before heading into the restaurant,
we enjoyed some cocktails in the lounge,
whilst browsing the menus. Those who know
me will know that I am a true Martini fan. I
can honestly say I enjoyed one of my best
ever Martinis on this evening, so I definitely
recommend trying one.
I was also delighted to see a whole menu
specifically for vegetarians. As a selective
vegetarian sometimes veggie menus can be
rather dull and boring… but not this one!
To start I chose the Grilled Haloumi & Black
Quinoa Salad with Avocado, Pomegranate
& Harissa Dressing. The kick of the Harissa
matched the Haloumi flavour and texture
perfectly, whilst the Pomegranite added a
sweet crunch.
This was all followed by a main course of
Roasted Cauliflower Steak, Pan Fried Paneer,
Lemon Yogurt & Herb Falafel. I was baffled
about how the Cauliflower Steak was so well
cooked. The Paneer cheese cooked on site
was not over powering, nor underwhelming
and the Falafel was simply delicious. I am not
sure which course I enjoyed the most?
Meanwhile my ‘carnivore’ of a partner went
with the a modern take on Ham, Egg & Peas
which consisted of Ham Hock, Pea Veloute,
Soft Egg & Summer Truffle, a really delightful
summer dish followed by the Roast Rump
of Lamb with Smoked Aubergine, Tomato
Tartare, Parsley Risotto & Black Garlic Jus.
I always look forward to the finale and this
time it didn’t disappointed as I spotted one
of my favourite ingredients… Rhuburb! So the
Elderflower Pannacotta, Poached Rhuburb
& Ginger Shortbread was a highlight for me,
however as a chocolate lover, my partner
conquered and preferred his Chocolate
Brownie with Marshmallow & English
Strawberry Ice Cream.
We were lucky enough at the end of our
meal to be given a guided tour by restaurant
manager Adam, who knows pretty much
everything about Ickworth Hotel, giving a
fascinating insight into Ickworth’s history
and workings.
He showed us how the household functioned,
with staff tunnels in the basements, while the
historical treasures above ground, including
a Gainsborough, Titian and Velasquez –
reflecting how the other half once lived. Plus a
secret room, but ask about that on your visit!
The grounds are extensive, beautiful and
perfect for enjoying a relaxing stroll or
borrowing a bike (some of which have toddler
trailers) and setting off around the estate.
If that sounds too energetic, you can opt to
snooze by the fire in one of the plush
drawing rooms while the kid raise cane in
the crèche. There is also a cinema for the kids
to enjoy a movie daily at 6pm. Speaking of
children, one of the genius things about The
Ickworth, however, is the listening service they
offer, which allows parents to tuck their little
ones up in bed, and then head downstairs for
a drink or to dine in Frederick’s.
At first, (having no children yet) we weren’t
sure what this strange looking contraption
was but it all became clear by the end of our
stay.
I also found out there were also treatment
rooms - one thing all ladies can appreciate on
a break away and another thing to note.
Overall the Ickworth presented us with a
place to relax in, whilst providing incredible
food and a first-rate source of outdoor
adventures. This is certainly a place we will
be revisiting again soon!’
BECCLES BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR A FIFTH YEAR
Now in its 5th year, the Beccles
Beer Festival has become one of
the most popular events in
Beccles calendar...
Last year more than 1500 people
visited the 3 day beer festival,
drinking over 4,000 pints of real
ale, cider, perry and craft lager from
25 different breweries within 30
miles of Beccles.
Organisers Graham Elliott and
Beccles Lido Director, Shaun
Crowley, told Bounce Magazine
“This is the biggest beer festival in
the region and real ale enthusiasts
travel from all over East Anglia. It’s
not just a celebration of local ales
but it’s held in Beccles Public Hall
to raise funds for Beccles Lido – and so it also celebrates
these 2 fantastic community run Beccles attractions!”
From Friday-Sunday 18-20 November, the 5th Beccles Beer
Festival will feature some very special ales not available
on draft anywhere else, such as Pink Panther, as well as
festival stalwart Green Jack Ripper!
But Shaun was keen to emphasise that this beer festival
isn’t just for the boys, and a team of ladies is again set to
be behind the bar on Friday for Ladies Night, you might
even find Bounce’s own Rachel pulling a pint; and there is
a fully licensed bar selling wines, spirits and soft drinks for
the non-ale drinkers. There will also be live music on Friday
evening from local bands Owl & Wolves and Old School
Blues, and on Saturday evening the return of the hugely
popular Murphys Lore.
So make this a weekend to get over to Beccles – and why
not use the bus or train so that you can really enjoy a
selection of the tipples on offer?
Halloween
Horror
The name “Halloween” is a shorter form for
the Gaelic name All-hallows-evening.
•
Originally called Samhain, it was a
time when they believed the division
between the worlds of the living and
the dead became very thin and
when ghosts and spirits were
free to wander as they wished...
So here is a ghoulish classic, to
kick start your Halloween...
‘PUMPKIN MARTINI’
1. Chill a martini glass with ice.
2. Take 60ml pumpkin infused vodka and add
to a cocktail shaker. NOTE: This part may need
to be done in advance! Directions on how to
make the infused vodka are in the ingriedients
section to the right.
Ingredients
• 60ml pumpkin infused vodka
How to make this...
•Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
•Put the pumpkin on a silicone mat lined baking sheet
and bake until just tender, about 20 minutes. Remove
the pumpkin from the oven and set aside to cool.
•Pour the vodka into a bottle or large glass container.
Add the pumpkin, cinnamon stick, vanilla beans and
ginger.
• Splash of Cointreau
• Ice
3. Add a splash of Cointreau then add ice.
4. Throw away the ice from the chilled glass.
Take the cocktail mixture and after a good
shake, strain into the glass.
BY THE ANGRY WAITER
5. Dust with some cinnamon to finish!
HALLOWEEN SPECIAL AND COMPETITION...
Get your workspace ready
First rule of pumpkin carving: do it somewhere
you don’t mind getting messy, ideally outdoors.
Use the right tools for the job
You may be tempted to just use regular kitchen
knives, but do yourself a favour and invest in
a pumpkin carving kit, you can get these from
supermarkets. Much safer too!
Draw Before You Carve
You’ll need a pen for drawing your design onto
the pumpkin, and couple big bowls — one for the
seeds and one for the rest of the pumpkin goo
and throwaway bits leftover from carving. .
Cut out the pumpkin lid
With a slim pumpkin carving knife (the carving
tool with a toothed blade like a mini-saw), cut
along the outline of your pumpkin lid. Make sure
you slice through the pumpkin at a 45 degree
inward angle, so you’ll be able to replace the lid
without it falling in.
Remove the seeds
Grab the big bunches of seeds with your hands
and place them in one of the bowls, to be cleaned
later. Using the scraper that came with your kit
(or a metal spoon if you don’t have this tool),
clean out the inside of the pumpkin until no
stringy bits remain. Discard the pumpkin guts in
the second bowl.
Tip: Don’t Throw Away the Seeds!
Whatever you do, save those pumpkin seeds!
They’re so good roasted simply with oil and salt.
Or why not warm up with some homemade
pumpkin soup made from the leftovers?
Cut out the design
Make straight cuts into your pumpkin along the
lines of your design, removing the pieces and
discarding them in the refuse bowl.
Light your pumpkin
Insert a tea light candle in the bottom of your
pumpkin and place the lid on top. Use a long
match or lighter.
Send us your pictures!
Upload your pumpkin photos to our Facebook
page www.facebook.com/bouncemagazine1 or
email them to hello@bouncemagazine.co.uk and
you will be entered into our draw to win tickets to
see a show at the Theatre Royal. Happy pumpkin
carving everyone!
OCTOBER 2016 | ISSUE #48
THE
CAT
POSE
Benefits
1
Stress relief
Stretches the front torso and neck
Provides a gentle massage to the spine
encouraging it to re-lengthen as much as
possible and recreate space between the
vertebrae, thereby reducing compression and
possible disk issues
Great for pregnancy in releasing stiffness
of the spine and encouraging the baby to
move into a more comfortable position
(from breech presentations!)
Precautions:
With a neck injury, keep the head in
line with the torso.
How to try the pose:
1. Start on your hands and knees in a “table top”
position. Make sure your knees are set directly
below your hips and your wrists, elbows and
shoulders are in line and perpendicular to the
floor. Centre your head in a neutral position, eyes
looking at the floor.
2. As you inhale, lift your sitting bones and
chest toward the ceiling, allowing your belly
2
to sink toward the floor. Lift your head to look
straightforward. Maintain length at the back of
your neck and keep your shoulders down away
from your ears.
3. As you exhale, round your spine toward the
ceiling, making sure to keep your shoulders and
knees in position. Release your head toward the
floor; gently draw your chin to your chest.
4. Repeat lengthening the spine and the breath
up to 12 times.
Beginners Tip:
If you have difficulty rounding the very top of the
upper back, ask a friend to lay a hand just above
and between the shoulder blades to help you
activate this area. With thanks to
www.yogajournal.com/poses.
Please take care in all poses, if unsure please
attend a class or ask for a private lesson.
THE SELF CENTRE
Slow down, Relax
Listen...
Summer has come to a close and
autumn is upon us. The last of the
harvest will soon be brought in and our
attention will naturally creep forwards
to winter and the colder months ahead.
As the nights draw in so do our thoughts. There
is a sense of quietening, a slowing down of the
earth which will affect those that listen. The world
is winding down in anticipation of its long sleep,
the air turns damp and crisp, the leaves golden
and our breath billows like a dragon’s.
At the end of the month we celebrate Halloween,
the one night of the year when our loved ones
can come back to visit us. The veil between the
worlds thins and we can almost reach across.
Summer’s energy is waning and we turn to
comfort and warmth, putting away our summer
things to prepare for the winter. It is a time to
ponder and make plans for the coming months.
As a species, we are often very good at slowing
down for others, we give our time and listen
but we are not always as good at listening to
ourselves.
64
So why not take some time this month to do a
self check-up. Spend a few minutes each day, as
you wake or just before sleep, to find out how you
are and make some changes. Slow down, relax
and listen.
Your body:
Lie down comfortably and focus on your breath,
is it easy and calm or does your chest feel tight
and laboured? Listen to your muscles, are they
tense or relaxed? How are your joints, do they
ache and feel out of place? Does your body feel
heavy and weighed down or clean and healthy?

WELLBEING
OCTOBER 2016 | ISSUE #48
Your mind:
Next, clear your head by focusing on
breathing and then listen to the quiet
in your mind. Does it chatter away in
the back ground? Is it complaining
and criticising or does it praise and
encourage? Do you like what you hear?
your
voice
Your heart:
When you have finished, concentrate on your
breath again and then listen to your heart. Are
you at peace or troubled? Is there someone you
need to talk to? Something you need to let go?
Supporting...
Last month saw the 7th annual
Classic & Sports Cars by the Lake
show become another successful
event. Hear how Coastline continued
their support for this show whilst live
demonstrating some of our vehicle
fitting skills.
Having supported this show since it’s inception
Coastline are proud to have seen it grow into
such a large and successful event.
We provided all of the signs, banners, directional
and club signage for the show and worked
closely with the committee to launch it’s new
branded logo and style for this year’s show.
CLASSIC & SPORTS CARS
by the lake
Designing, printing and producing everything
ourselves, we kitted our stand out with Coastline
branded balloons, bunting, T-shirts, signs,
banners and flags.
The result was a colourful, interesting and
interactive stand that seemed to appeal to a
wide audience of all ages.
We had children taking part in our colouring-in
competition, car enthusiasts talking about our
vehicle graphics services and the general
public watching with interest as our fitters
transformed a black van into a colourful
promotional tool.
Each year Coastline also attend and exhibit at
the event. This year we focused on our
promotional material offerings as well as
performing a live vehicle graphics
demonstration.
If you would like to make use of our
professional knowledge for a show or
event you have coming up or would like to
ROAD
Confidence
THIS WAY
Life is full of everyday
challenges.
BY RUBY REED
Something we find
challenging is normally an
activity we don’t enjoy or
feel we are not very good at.
For me, the activity happens to
be driving. Well it turns out I’m
not alone…
It seems there are a few of us
out there that are not overly
confident when we are behind
the wheel, and if we didn’t have
to wouldn’t! However driving
is necessary for many of us
and something we can’t get by
without.
My dislike for driving started
from my very first lesson. But
I couldn’t tell you why- It just made me nervous! Since
having my licence (5 years now!) my confidence has slowly
grown.
There are a few tips I have, that contributed to this. So
listen up if that drive you have to do this Tuesday is playing
on your mind.
1) GO AUTO...
Like most, my first car was a manual drive. It seemed
only right as I passed my test in a manual. I now drive
an automatic and personally I would never go back. An
automatic allows all my attention to be on the outside
world and not worrying about which gear I am in- or
should be! The job is done for you- sold.
2) EMBRACE THE TECH...
A satnav could be your new best friend. I recently invested
in a TomTom and use it whenever I am a little unsure on the
route I am about to take. My directional sense is nothing
78

OCTOBER OCTOBER 2016 | 2016 ISSUE | #48 ISSUE | #48 LIFESTYLE
to brag about so I find being
talked to very helpful! The
guidance on screen too can
really help you to remain calm
and avoid getting flustered.
A new route can also be
calculated, for example when
a road is closed or even if
you just don’t fancy the first
route suggested! You will get
to know your device and its
features. Many include lane
guidance and speed camera
prompts- All making for
an easier and more relaxed
journey!
3) FORWARD THINKING...
A bit of planning is always
going to help something run
more smoothly. Regarding
your journey leave in good
time and allow a few minutes
extra so you are not in a
rush - enabling you to think more clearly and
be more relaxed throughout the journey as
you’re not worrying about being late!
4) DITCH THE DOUBT...
If your dislike for driving comes from a
lack of confidence in your ability, it’s worth
remembering that you have as much right as
anyone else to be on the road. You passed
your test! And lastly practice makes perfect.
Why not have a little drive somewhere on
your own with no particular aim- just to brush
up on your skills! Drive safe!
Also, already have an idea of what route you
are taking- especially if you don’t have a
satnav!
Rachel Shaw at Rudlings Wakelam,
hopes to resolve some of the confusion.
O
OCTOBER 2016 | ISSUE #48
5
Debunking myths within the law
ften in every day conversation you hear
people discuss their perception of the law
and of the legal profession. Often those
perceptions are not true and here are some common
examples:
Popular
misconceptions
I have a common law wife/husband
There is no such thing as a Common Law spouse. Co-habitation
confers far fewer rights upon parties upon separation. For example
there is no right to maintenance (unless there are children of the
relationship), division of assets or pension splitting as opposed to
divorce. Co-habitation agreements can be prepared to make
intentions clear and as to what happens on any separation. Any
parties co-habiting are urged to firm up the co-ownership of any
property in so far as to whether it is held as joint tenants or tenants
in common and as to the proportion of each party’s respective
share.
I do not need a Will
Any adult with children and/or assets should make a Will. If you
are married and die without a Will, your spouse will get your
personal possessions and the remainder of the Estate if there are
no children or grandchildren. If there are children or
grandchildren, then the surviving spouse only receives the first
£250,000 and then half of the remainder. If you are unmarried,
the surviving partner would only get any assets nominated such as
pensions and lump sums outside of an Estate and the Estate will go
to the deceased’s children, or if none their parents or siblings.
Contesting Wills can be costly, time consuming and stressful.
If I make a claim for compensation, my solicitor will take
most of the money?
If a claim for personal injury compensation is successful and the
amount for personal injury compensation attained is over £1,000,
costs will be met by the opposing party. If the matter is being dealt
www.rudlings-wakelam.com
81
with under a no win no fee agreement which allows for a success
fee, the solicitor’s success fee may be deducted from the
compensation but is always capped at 25% of that compensation
leaving the client with at least 75% of their compensation.
I don’t need a solicitor - I can deal with it myself
A recent report by the Citizens Advice Bureau says that the stress,
responsibility and loneliness of going to Court without
representation can mean litigants in person achieve worse
outcomes compared with their represented counterparts. Many
solicitors offer fixed fees and sometimes flexibility as to payment
enabling a party to receive representation to achieve the best
possible outcome.
Solicitors are stuffy, unapproachable and use words that I
won’t understand
Any good solicitor should be friendly and approachable and
should be able to explain matters so that you fully comprehend the
issues involved, the strategy and steps that need to be taken. We,
at Rudlings Wakelam, pride ourselves in that we are warm,
approachable and use every day language to explain things
clearly to our clients.
discussed above or to obtain advice in general
AUTUMN HAIR TREND
PREDICTIONS
SPONSORED BY CABELLO, HALESWORTH
The autumn season is finally here and
there’s no better way to celebrate than
with a new hairstyle – with low ponytails,
twisted knots and smoky grey all topping
the bill.
Online hair and beauty retailer Hairtrade.com
have looked into the hair trend predictions for this
coming season and picked out the styles, cuts and
colours to rock this autumn.
From low ponytails and distressed knots to smoky
pastel greys and autumnal reds, there’s a range
of trends to pick from that will take you right
through to the New Year.
Say goodbye to beach boho waves and warm
honey tones – this autumn is all about dark auburn
colours and distressed styles.
Also predicted as big autumn hair trends are
hair embellishments, including sparkly clips and
bejazzled bands, dark and sleek gothic styles and
the perfect mix of blonde and brown – the bronde
colour.
OCTOBER 2016 OCTOBER | ISSUE 2016 #48 | ISSUE | HAIR #48& BEAUTY
1. ALL ABOUT THE KNOTS
Say goodbye to summer plaits and braids – the
new season is all about distressed and casual
knots. Simply choose between a high or low
style and twist your hair into a relaxed and loose
bun with straying ends.
2. EMBELLISHMENT
This look would be perfect for any autumn
parties you have booked in the diary. The
catwalk shows were filled with models wearing
embellished headwear, including jewelled velvet
bands and statement sequin clips. Keep your
outfit low-key to make sure all eyes are on your
hairstyle.
3. AUTUMNAL TONES
There’s no better way to celebrate the autumn
season than with a classic autumn hair colour.
Turn your back to ashy tones and look for deep
auburn reds or even dark
rosy pinks.
4. GOTHIC AND GLOSSY
One of the main events during the autumn
season is of course Halloween, and that means
donning your best spooky styles. How about
adding the fashion factor to your fancy dress
this year and sporting one of the season’s
best trends – the gothic and glossy look.
Make sure your hair is looking dark and
mysterious, and style into a sleek side-parted
bun finished with glossy styling spray.
ponytail with a thin band. For added style, take a
loose strand from the back of your head and twist
around the bunch, covering the band.
6. SMOKY GREY
Grey has never been more stylish and fashion fans
have already been spotted trying out this daring
hair colour. For the best shade, opt for a light
smoky colour that will match any of your autumn
outfits.
7. BRONDE
If you don’t fancy a major hair colour change but
are in need of a revamp, then you’ll be happy to
know that ‘bronde’ is back. As seen sported by
celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Cheryl Cole
and Caroline Flack, it describes that stylish hair
colour that’s halfway between blonde and brown.
Think dark blonde or light textured brown and
you’re there.
For bookings or advice call Cabello on
3 London Road, Halesworth, IP19 8LH.
5. LOW PONYTAILS
If you’re looking for an easy alternative to the
top knot, try a relaxed low ponytail for a day
in the office or weekend outdoors. Without
losing your parting, tie your hair into a low
Balance your Wellbeing...
Thermal Auricular Therapy
Heard of this before? Also known as Hopi Ear Candling, this
surprisingly pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears
is used to treat a variety of conditions.
An underrated treatment, it is suitable for all and has very
few contraindications, making it a safe and highly-satisfying.
Hopi Ear Candling can be used to treat a number of ailments
like excess wax in the ear canal and sinus problems.
Another way to enhance the treatment is to add
lymphatic drainage, especially whilst the candle is
gently resting in the ear. This can speed up the removal
of blockages and help the ears to re-balance after the
treatment. If you are a frequent flyer and suffer with ear
problems, this treatment is ideal, as it helps to alleviate
the pressure on the inner ear.
The Native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona
frequently used the Ear Candles to assist with minor ailments
of the ears, nose, throat and head and the candles are still
made today using the traditional formula, originating from
the Hopi Indians.
How do they work?
The ear candles bring a soothing heat to the head and ears,
which relieves and relaxes the client. They are made from
natural ingredients such as beeswax, honey extracts, sage,
green tea and lavender, having a ‘chimney’ effect on the area.
The candle draws any impurities to the surface where they
can be gently removed and helps to equalise the pressure in
the head and ears. During the treatment, the secretion flow
within the ear is gently stimulated and the vapour produced
collects and removes the impurities or deposits.
The Treatment
The treatment lasts around 45 minutes and the client
will be lying down comfortably relaxing and listening
to spa music. The candle is gently placed into the ear;
however, it needs to be placed so it sits snug to ensure
a secure vacuum before the candle is lit.
The candle is then held in a vertical position with the
therapist’s hands holding the candle in place, and
performing light drainage movements around the
thyroid gland and the outer ear. You will experience a
gentle crackling sound as the candle burns and a warm,
rhythmical feeling will move down the ear and around
the immediate area. The candle is then removed
and put out and the process
repeated on the other ear.
These are then carried away through the candle ‘chimney’,
however some of them can be found in the candle wax
residue after removal from the ear. It is not unusual to for
them to work their way to the surface, 24-48 hours after the
treatment.
Most clients find the whole
experience very relaxing
and fall asleep during
treatment, well I did!
HOW TO APPLY
Eyelashes
Eyelashes
There are so many different trends, practices and products on
the market and there are so many options when it comes
to the different ways to wear make-up.
However, almost all of them share
the same goal, to enhance the eyes
with full, glamorous lashes.
The two primary ways to achieve voluminous
lashes are to apply false eyelashes or lash
extensions.
Unfortunately lash extensions are significantly
more costly then false lashes and require regular
maintenance and proper care. This is why so
many of us turn to false lashes. False lashes
can be found in beauty and drug stores and
supermarkets. The price can vary depending on
the brand and where they are purchased from.
With there being so many different brands on the
market, it’s hard to know which ones to choose.
So I am going
to share with
you all, what
my favourite
lashes are,
which won’t
break the bank.
dramatic look or something natural, they have
it all. They stock synthetic, silk and mink lashes
which can be purchased as a pair or as a set
How to apply false eyelashes for beginners
1. Curl your lashes and put on a coat of mascara.
2. Make sure that the lashes fit to your eye shape.
Trim the outer corner so they fit neatly across the
length of your eye.
3. Apply eyelash glue to your lash line (I like to
use the brand DUO)
4. Wait for the eyelash glue to become tacky, this
practically takes thirty seconds.
5. Take your tweezers and carefully place the
lashes on to the glue, as close to your lash line as
possible.
6. Make sure the lashes are securely in place by
pushing the band down, particularly in the inner
and outer corner. You can do this by using your
tweezers.
the summer!
It has been an extremely busy
summer for us here at Copeland’s,
With the drop in the temperature and the season
Re-upholstering furniture is a clever way of
achieving a new look.
We are always up cycling different types
of furniture for people, but there is a
misconception that it is a cheaper option
than buying new… this isn’t always the case.
You have to ask yourself, ‘do I like the
furniture style’?, ‘is it comfortable’?
Have you looked around and not seen
anything you like better and is the quality
of the frame worth re-doing?
If the answers are all positive towards
the existing furniture, then yes it is worth
doing, after all you will be getting a new
piece of furniture, back albeit in the same
style!
The trend is to use several different fabrics
on furniture, it could be a plain and a
pattern or two different plains or different textures, patchwork is also popular, when you go
down the line of bespoke anything is possible!
My top tips...
Always try to use a fabric with a good rub test – 20,000 rubs being the minimum really for
domestic use, unless its something that is not used much.
Don’t forget that our fire laws state that
fabric must be fire proofed or you use a fire
proofed liner under the top fabric.
Don’t just think about changing the fabric a
set of new legs can transform a style and if
your cushions have seen better days there
are choices of fillings from fibre to foam and
feather wrap.
So have a little fun this autumn and give
your furniture a new lease of life. Or why not
come and see us at the shop!
THE AUTUMN CHILL SETS IN
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : It’s your last chance to trim
deciduous hedges to keep them looking tidy
over the winter
Now that autumn has arrived, grass
grows much slower so there’s no
need to cut your lawn.
If however it is mild and you need to mow,
change your mower to a higher cut. The lawn
is particularly susceptible to the damage of the
larvae of the daddy longlegs at this time of the
year, they eat the roots of the grass. Use a leather
jacket killer to prevent extensive damage.
Planting
October is an excellent time to plant trees, shrubs
and perennials, the soil is warm enough to give
them a good start before winter begins. It is also a
good time to divide perennials that have become
too large. Lift the plant without damaging the roots
and pull the young parts away from the old plant.
They can then be replanted. Plant winter flowering
plants in the border such as ornamental cabbage or
pansies. Bulbs can also be planted in borders or pots.
Indoors
You can have flowering plants as early as December
if you plant tulips or hyacinths so that the tops are
level with the soil. Crocus need to be planted a few
centimeters deeper and narcissi should protrude
slightly above the soil. Place the bowls or pots in the
cool (12deg) for about 8 weeks.
stepped out of a mould of
their manager.
Block after block after block
by Messrs Berra, Webster,
Douglas and Skuse in
scenes that were more
admirable than desperate.
Villa were toothless but
Town were tigerish and
tenacious. All good so far.
The problem was Ipswich
were little better than
their supposed illustrious
counterparts when it came to
attacking intent in the final third.
They occasionally threatened but lacked that
touch of class and composure that can break
down a defence at any level.
Oh and there was new man Leon Best having a
header cleared off the line and Cole Skuse’s clever
chip suffering the same fate.
All in eight minutes of injury time. Five very good
chances when the previous 90 minutes had only
yielded just one shot on target – for either side.
Town were applauded off – largely due to their
efforts in those frantic few minutes – and we were
left to reflect on what might have been if McCarthy
had introduced Best, and fellow frontman Luke
Varney, a little earlier.
We were also left with a match that had seen
granite-like defending, stuttering forward play, Brett
Pitman isolated as the only striker
and then, finally, Ipswich throwing
off the shackles to, almost,
spectacular aplomb.
And there it is in that snapshot.
Ipswich will rarely concede two
or three goals if they continue to
defend like that, nor will they win
games comfortably.
But in those fleeting few injury time
minutes, there was a glimpse of what
might be possible.
It is now up to McCarthy to fashion a
side which combines the best of both worlds. If he
can do that, maybe, just maybe, we can look forward
to some exciting times far beyond eight minutes of
injury time.
Then came the eight minutes of injury time
and quite frankly the strangest period of
additional time I have ever reported on.
It started with a decent Freddie Sears’ free
kick that deflected just wide and ended with
the same player’s wonderfully deft shot that
hit the outside of the post.
ADNAMS BREWERY TOUR
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
Action comes in all shapes and
sizes (just like Action Man!) and this
month the action is tasty... very tasty!
AM, accompanied by father-in-law Mick, took the
Adnams Brewery Tour at their Southwold base.
As a fan of one of the region’s best known brewers I
was particularly looking forward to this review!
Brewing at this site can actually be dated back to
1345, but it was in 1872 when George and Ernest
Adnams purchased the Sole Bay Brewery. In 1902
Jack and Pierse Loftus bought a stake in the company
to help fund further development and the company
is mostly owned and run by the Adnams and Loftus
families to this day.
The tour starts with an introduction to the quality
ingredients for which they go to great lengths to
source from all over the globe. We’re then taken
through the brewing process of which Adnams takes
great pride in their green credentials ensuring the
process is as efficient as possible with a full refit of
its brewery equipment in 2006/07, whilst also finding
suitable homes and alternative uses for any waste
materials.
From what is still considered a relatively small brewer,
Adnams produce almost 30 million pints of beer a
year with production running for 14 hours a day, five
days a week. They now boast a range of 20 beers plus
season and limited edition brews. With demand and
116

SPORT
popularity at an all time high Adnams are planning
on increasing production to meet these wants and
needs. They have utilised their space exceptionally
well, they are clearly very proud of their history and
home, the company therefore does it upmost to look
after Southwold.
After a look round the entire facility there was just
one thing left to do... taste the finished article! Our
guide gave us a taste of some of the latest editions to
the line with the Blackshore stout and Action Man’s
favourite Ghostship, (which was only supposed to be
a limited edition but is now the second biggest seller
across the range,) we also sampled the Mosiac, Ease
Up IPA and the Dry Hopped Larger, (now my new
favourite!)
The 2 hour very informative tour concluded with a
visit to the towns Adnams cellar & Kitchen Store (with
13 across Suffolk there’s bound to be one near you,)
where we were introduced to their Vodka and Gin,
both of which have won the coveted “world’s best”
label from leading industry experts, not bad especially
when you consider they only installed their distillery
six years ago!
Finally our parting gift, a free bottle of beer!
The now Action Man certified and highly
recommended tours of the brewery or distillery
cost only £12 per person and can be booked
(must be booked well in advance) online at
www.adnams.co.uk.
#21 ENTERTAINMENT
BY JACK STEVENS
MUSIC
This month, we caught up with
‘blood talk’.
Barny Cutter (guitarist of alternative rock band
‘Fortunato’) discussed the electronic solo project,
about expanding his love for electronic music, his
alternate influences, and plans for the future. The
debut track ‘With You’ featured HARDACTORS
on vocal duty and was released on 23rd July as a
free download.
Hey Barny! The new blood talk material has
such depth and warmth, making it reminiscent
of artists like Gold Panda or James Blake. What
influences you most with this particular project,
and how does the process of writing differ from
that of your other aliases?
Thank you! James Blake is certainly one of my
main influences. His songs give you that feeling
of being just on the edge of something but you’re
not quite sure what it is. I’m still learning a lot
about production and writing with this genre
so I’m doing a lot of experimenting, especially
with vocal arrangement. With other projects I’ve
always written with other people but being on
my own means I have no real guidelines and I can
find myself going off on musical tangents.
You’ve had some support from BBC Introducing
for the debut track, which features Joe Bailey
(of HARDACTORS fame). Who else have you got
your eye on for future collaborations?
Working with Joe was great, he’s incredibly
knowledgeable which meant he could have a
big input on the track. Collaborations will be one
of the main focal points in blood talk’s future
releases. I know a couple of singers that have
never sung in bands or on records but are really
talented so I definitely want to get them involved.
My friend Em Norfolk has a really delicate voice
which would pair well with some ideas I’ve got.
Keep an eye out for her name.
We’re aware that you’ll be making a live debut
with a full backing band on the 9th of November
in Bury St. Edmunds. Are there any future plans
to expand the live experience, and it what way
will the live show differ?
For sure, I want gigs to be an experience as
opposed to just pressing play on a laptop and
adding vocals over the top – We’re going to try
and do a lot of the instrumentation live. I’ve made
a conscious decision to not have guest singers at
gigs, however I’ve never sung live before or rated
myself as a great singer so it’s quite daunting.
Sam Harrison (Bass/Vocals) and I are going to do
a lot of dual-vocals. I’ve managed to get Harry
Dale (Drums) involved too. I’ve worked with him a
lot before so it made sense to get him onboard.
See you next month - Jack
WHAT DOG’S WOULD SAY IF WE COULD TALK...
After catching up with a few of my doggie pals, I
thought it would be rather funny to discuss what
we would say to our humans if we could talk... (of
course I am one of a kind as I can write!)
So here are my top ten...
10. You gonna eat ALL of that?
Well how much can one person eat, if you’re
going to leave left overs send them our way!
9. I don’t smell anything!
Well it’s true that in most cases It may be us that
smells, but luckily we don’t have to smell it! We
sometimes like a bath after all.
4. I saw you picking up my poop, so I went to
the litter box and ate the cat’s.
No need to thank me. Just payin’ it forward.
3. Why can’t I pee in the house if you can?
It gets cold outside - how would you like it?
2 The cat did it.
In my house most of the time this is the case.
1. You are going to cut off my WHAT??!!
Well, how would you like it? Nuff said!
Keep up to date with me on Twitter @
bouncearchie
8. FETCH THIS!
As much as we love the game we don’t want to
play it all the time. You try it for once.
7. This isn’t a mess, it’s ambiance!
What is a mess to you, is perfection to us.
6. For the last time: I’M a good boy!!!
Please stop asking!
5. There’s a stranger in the house. Alert! Alert!
What if I brought a stray dog home, would you
not get scared?
