Our award-winning Pro Bono Centre allows you 

to take part in a wide range of legal advice and 

education projects under the supervision of 

qualified lawyers. Pro bono can provide valuable 

training in real-life situations that complement 

the classroom teaching you receive with us. Our 

award-winning Pro Bono Centre is an excellent 

place to start practising your legal and practical 

skills in a supportive environment. 

There are a wide range of projects available - 

including staffing an employment law advice 

line, delivering legal education presentations

Careers in law 

All of our postgraduate and professional 

qualifications are recognised 

internationally and allow you to practise 

as a legal professional in the UK and 

English Common Law jurisdictions. 

Once you have completed the academic 

stage of training for solicitors and 

barristers, you will need to continue your 

professional studies with either the Legal 

Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Professional 

Training Course (BPTC), depending on the 

career path you wish to follow. 

The vast majority of those seeking to 

qualify as solicitors complete their 

training contracts at law firms but there 

are also opportunities to do so in the 

public sector. 

For those students who do not have a 

qualifying law degree, BPP University Law 

School also offers the Graduate Diploma 

in Law (GDL) conversion course. The GDL 

programme is designed for graduates of 

a non-law degree who want to qualify as 

either a solicitor or barrister.

Solicitor 

Working as a solicitor is undoubtedly 

a challenging and demanding career 

choice. You will need energy, vision 

and a sharp mind to complement your 

studies and develop successfully in 

the legal profession. 

The module options for our LPC 

programmes will help you to decide 

which area of practice you want to do 

when you are qualified. Some of the most 

popular areas of practice include private 

client, corporate, commercial, criminal, 

administrative and public law, charities, 

employment and family law. 

Once you have successfully completed 

your LPC, you will need to obtain a 

training contract to become a qualified 

solicitor. This contract traditionally lasts 

for two years and marks the final stage 

of your training. The majority of trainees 

complete their training at law firms but 

other opportunities also exist in the public 

sector with, for example, local authorities 

and the Government Legal Service. 

A small number of training contracts 

are also offered each year in private 

sector organisations. 

As a solicitor you will be interpreting 

the law for your clients and applying it 

to their situation in order to advise them 

on their best course of action. You may 

be representing them in a court of law. 

You may also be drawing up contracts 

or drafting other legal documents, or be 

advising on domestic matters such as 

divorce, child arrangements or simply 

facilitating a house move. 

The range of work you could undertake is 

extremely broad and includes advocacy, 

intellectual property, drafting and 

negotiating contracts, buying and selling 

businesses or property, wills, trusts and 

the prosecution or defence of criminals.

Barrister 

On successfully completing our BPTC, 

you need to be called to the Bar by your 

Inn of Court where you will complete a 

12-month pupillage, shadowing a senior 

barrister and undertaking other court 

work. The pupillage is the final stage of 

training for a barrister and essential for 

those who wish to practise in England 

and Wales. Once you are a fully qualified 

barrister, your work can vary depending 

on the level of your expertise and the 

area of law in which you work. 

This is an extremely competitive 

process and having a qualification from 

BPP University Law School will help you 

stand out from the rest. 

The majority of pupillages are offered in 

private practice by barristers’ chambers 

but there are also some opportunities 

at the employed Bar. Possible roles in 

the public sector include the Crown 

Prosecution Service (CPS) and the 

Government Legal Service (GLS) or in 

the private sector working ‘in-house’ 

for a large company.

1. Accountancy practice 

As a trainee accountant, following 

this route, you may work in a 

multi-disciplinary accountancy 

practice where you will provide 

accountancy services such as: 

Audit – Audit is the regulatory process 

of reviewing the financial statements 

of companies to form an opinion on the 

‘truth and fairness’ of those statements 

as investors and other stakeholders rely 

on them. Auditors typically specialise in 

an industry and the work is often varied, 

and will include travel and working on 

site at a client’s premises. 

Accounting and advisory services – 

Preparation of a company’s financial 

accounts requires expertise and 

up-to-date knowledge. Qualified 

accountants may practise as part of a 

large organisation or independently, and 

will work with the business owners and 

managers to appropriately represent 

the business. 

Specialist areas – Including tax 

compliance and planning, insolvency, 

forensic auditing and cyber security. 

Global businesses require specialist 

advice and services and you may 

choose to progress into a niche area

Diploma route] is a unique programme which has

This programme is unique in that it is aligned to the 

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants 

(ACCA) professional accountancy qualification and 

includes both accounting and finance modules. This

During the first three terms you will study 

BPP University’s Advanced Diploma in Accounting

module successfully completed during the course,

osteopathic techniques. Developed in 2005 with 

the late pioneer Anthony Pusey, this programme

We know that not every student wants to 

follow the traditional route of September 

to May study, so we offer three separate 

intakes for many of our programmes. This

suit your circumstances. 

Start dates include January, May and 

September, so if you miss one, you do not 

have to wait too long until the next one

Multiple locations 

Our multiple UK study centres mean that you 

can choose which location to live and study,

understand that moving to the UK is a big step

Extended degrees

Moving to a new country or city is

Visas and immigration 

If you are a non-EU/EEA National you will 

need a visa that allows you to study in the 

UK. Most students will apply for a General 

Student Visa (Tier 4 Visa under the Points 

Based System – PBS) to study in the UK. 

Under the PBS (which may from time to 

time change), you must be sponsored 

by an institution such as BPP University, 

which is registered with the UK Visa s and 

Immigration office (UKVI), which is part 

of the Home Office, as a Tier 4 Sponsor. 

There are other visa types (for example: 

Dependant Visa, Post Study Work Visa), 

which will allow you to study in the UK. If 

you are already in the UK and hold a visa, 

the international office at BPP University 

will advise you if your status will allow you 

to study with us or if you have to apply for 

a Tier 4 Visa.

Work rights for international students 

As a student from outside the EEA you 

need to have an endorsement in your 

passport or Biometric Residence Permit 

(BRP) that will tell you if you are allowed to 

work in the UK while you study. It is very 

important to check that the endorsement 

does allow you to work. You can find more

Studying full-time in a foreign country is 

a big commitment and you must devote 

enough time to your classes, seminars, 

coursework and assessments to ensure 

you succeed in your chosen programme. 

At BPP University we want you to graduate 

as a highly-regarded future professional. So, 

although you can work when you study with 

us (subject to the restrictions set out in 

your visa), it is not recommended as we do 

not want your education to suffer. 

However, we acknowledge that some 

students might want to work while 

completing their programme, either to 

learn new skills or help pay for their living 

expenses. During term time, full-time 

international students on a programme at 

postgraduate degree level can, subject to 

current UK law entitlements (which may 

from time to time change), work up to 

20 hours per week, or 10 hours per week 

if you are on a programme below degree 

level (subject to the restrictions set out in 

your visa). You can work full-time during 

vacation periods.

called 'halls of residence' in the UK. These are

Before sending you an offer, our

5. Receiving your offer 

Once you have applied (as long as 

we have received all the information 

requested and you satisfy the eligibility 

and admission criteria) we will send 

you a conditional offer via email. If you 

have applied through an agent, you will 

receive the offer through their office. 


6. Payment 

When you have successfully satisfied 

all of the relevant requirements you 

will need to make payment as outlined 

in the offer. You will need to submit the 

acceptance documents along with your 

CAS* (Confirmation of Acceptance 

for Studies) request form to the 

admissions team. 

9. Organising travel 

Our international admissions team or 

local in-country agents can advise you on 

how to arrange travel to the UK including 

recommending a local airport and a 

travel route for when you arrive. 

If you have any questions about renewing 

your visa, our international student 

advisers will be able to help you. 

7. CAS* 

Once we have received payment 

confirmation and acceptance documents, 

we will issue a CAS (Confirmation of 

Acceptance for Studies) number, which 

you will need for your Tier 4 student visa 

application. If you choose not to pay the 

full fee upfront, your payment plan will 

be outlined in your offer letter. 

8 . Visa application* 

It can take up to six weeks in some 

countries to get an appointment so 

please ensure you do this in good time 

to arrive for your programme start date. 

You may be contacted by the UK Visas 

and Immigration office (UKVI), which 

is part of the Home Office, to attend a 

credibility interview – if this happens, 

you must contact us. Following your visa 

appointment, please contact us to inform 

us of the outcome. BPP University can 

accept no responsibility or liability as 

part of this process and/or any decision 

of the UKVI which acts independently 

from BPP University. 

*Not required from EU students. 

10. Registration 

Before starting your programme we 

will provide you with relevant welcome 

information. You will also need to register 

with BPP University (and for certain 

nationalities, the local police station). 

This tells us that you are in the UK and 

we can let the UKVI know that we have 

met you and you are ready to commence 

your studies. You will need to complete 

a registration form on a weekly basis 

to allow us to manage your attendance 

throughout the course of your studies. 

11. Final preparation 

 

Before starting your programme you 

will receive all the information you 

need about your timetable, locations, 

student manager (or personal tutor) 

and induction. Once your programme 

starts you will have lots of support and 

guidance and we will be very happy to 

answer any questions you have about 

your studies or life in the UK.

Both the LPC and BPTC Career Guarantee consist of BPP University 

using reasonable endeavours to ensure that you are permitted to 

enrol on one Course free-of-charge with BPP University or 

BPP Professional Education Limited (as the case may be) following 

graduating from the LPC or BPTC only where you meet the Free 

Course Criteria. 

Terms and conditions vary depending on whether you are a UK/EU 

student or an international student and the BPTC Career Guarantee 

may not be available to international students. Free courses are not 

available in the People’s Republic of China and may not be available 

in other jurisdictions. The offer may only be available at certain 

BPP University centres and/or online. The offer is restricted to certain 

BPP University and other BPP group programmes and courses. 

Eligibility and/or entry criteria may apply to certain courses and 

you must meet that criteria if you wish to use the applicable 

Career Guarantee for that course. Documentary evidence may 

be required of your efforts to obtain a job in the legal profession. 

The applicable Career Guarantee cannot be used in conjunction
