If you have driven down Sunny Dunes 

during the past few months you may have 

seen the sign across from Q Trading that 

reads Bazaar Dela R. About 2 years ago we 

featured an article on Julio De La Concha 

who is the proprietor and artist who manages 

Bazaar Dela R. Julio has been in Palm 

Springs since 1994 after moving here from 

Los Angeles. He has been a prolific painter 

as well as a business owner. The Bazaar 

Dela R. features art works of his own 

work as well as other artists. In addition 

it features a variety of unusual and unique 

collectibles from furniture to glass works 

and sculpture. 

During the next several weeks we will be 

featuring new and current local artists and 

galleries to expose what is happening 

in the art world in Palm Springs. You may 

be surprised to find the level of famous and 

accomplished artists, who create in a variety 

of mediums, which we are very fortunate 

to have in our community.

He has been exploring his personal art style 

over the past two years and has evolved to 

a new level of creative accomplishment. 

Recently he has been working with figurative 

paintings, primarily featuring nude 

male figures in a variety of bright colors. 

He has completed some commission work 

with these paintings which are developing 

a popular audience in Palm Springs. Julio 

has a certain reservation with the nudes, 

not wishing them to be too explicit but still 

having an eroticism accomplished with 

abstraction and color. 

In addition he has been working with further 

experiments with geometric designs in 

black and white. With these he has created 

paintings that work as individual paintings 

or as triptych of geometric designs that 

connect when placed side to side. Visiting 

Julio’s gallery of art and collections is

THAT IS FUNNY 

My three-year-old daughter stuck out her hand and said, “Look at the fly I killed, Mommy.” Since she was 

eating a juicy pickle at the time, I thrust her contaminated hands under the faucet and washed them with 

antibacterial soap. After sitting her down to finish her pickle, I asked, with a touch of awe, “How did you 

kill that fly all by yourself?” Between bites, she said, “I hit it with my pickle.” 

When my three-year-old was told to pee in a cup at the doctor’s office, he unexpectedly got nervous. 

With a shaking voice, he asked, “Do I have to drink it?” 

A couple of tourists were dining at a fine restaurant in Paris. After waiting for an hour, the husband finally

A brief History of underwear 

The Loincloth 

The earliest and most simple undergarment was the loincloth - a strip of material passed 

between the legs and around the waist. King Tutankhamen was buried with 145 of them, 

but the style didn’t go out with the Egyptians. Loincloths are still worn in Asia and Africa. 

Braies 

Men in the Middle Ages wore trouser-like undergarments called braies, which one 

stepped into and tied around the waist and legs about mid-calf. To facilitate urination, 

braies had a codpiece, a flap that buttoned or tied closed. 

Bras 

Bras were invented in 1913 when American socialite Mary Phelps-Jacob tied two handkerchiefs 

together with ribbon. Maidenform introduced modern cup sizes in 1928. 

Thongs 

The thong made its first U.S. public appearance at the 1939 World’s Fair, when New York 

Mayor Fiorello La Gaurdia required nude dancers to cover themselves. Thongs gained 

popularity as swim-wear in Brazil in the 1970’s and are now fashionable in many parts of 

the world.

Well, you know the campaign locally 

has begun when the candidates begin 

to walk door-to-door. Can you imagine 

walking when it’s still 107 degrees! 

Well, with only 50+ days left, we have no 

choice. 

Several forums and candidate interviews 

as well, including the Desert Sun – will 

be interesting how they report/endorse. 

Speaking of forums, it appears that the 

Desert Daily Guide will be hosting a 

candidate forum at CCBC Resort the 

evening of October 10th. Stay tuned for 

more information. 

The Presidential race continues to tighten. 

Did anyone really think it was going 

to be a rout? Wishful thinking. The 

debates will tell all. Of course Trump 

has such low expectations compared to 

Clinton he just has to not slobber on 

himself and the media will say he did 

fine. 

I’m headed off to Chicago to attend a 

board meeting for Democratic Municipal 

Officials. I’ll be interested to get 

everyone’s take on what is happening in 

their states. 

My colleague, John Aguilar and I, had a 

meeting this week about an affordable 

housing project in Cathedral City for 

seniors and the elderly and learned that 

many in the development had HIV/ 

AIDS. I had no idea. I remember when 

HIV housing was transitional, I never 

thought that people would live into their 

70’s and 80’s. Wow. Now time for a cure. 

Cannabis continues to be big news in 

the west valley. DHS and Cathedral City 

are issuing licenses. Palm Springs keeps 

flirting with expansion. Who is next? 

La Quinta? Palm Desert? Indio? I guess 

most people are waiting to see if legalization 

comes to California in the November 

election. That would certainly be a 

game-changer in the country. How are 

you voting? 

Over the next couple weeks, I’ll address 

the ballot propositions and then mid-October 

I’ll share how I am voting on all the 

races that we will see here in the desert.
