After working for Skiffington and briefly training on her own, Gonzalez became an assistant to Tampa Bay Downs veterinarian David Skand. “I learned a lot from him about understanding a horse’s body, their conformation, soundness and medications, and I also got to see what a lot of other trainers did to get a horse ready,” she said. In 2007, Gonzalez accepted a job as an assistant to Joan Scott, working under the Grade I-winning conditioner for five years. She credits Scott for helping her sharpen her management and organizational skills, and when the time arrived to open her own stable, she knew she was ready. Gonzalez studied psychology for three years at the University of Buenos Aires before coming to the United States. She is in a relationship with jockey Scott Spieth, whom she says is her best friend and soulmate. She trains primarily for Canadian homebuilder Bruno Schickedanz. He was an assistant to his brother, Chris Granitz, Jr., before Chris took a job with the railroad and Anthony took over the stable. Granitz sends many of his young horses to Ocala to be broken by Chad Stewart before they return to the racetrack. In 2014, Granitz’s then-5-year-old, Tell All You Know, won the Honor the Hero Stakes at Canterbury Park. Among his other top horses are False Promises, which won the Grade III Hawthorne Derby in 2003; 1991 Hawthorne Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap winner Lord Joe; multiple-stakes winner Darley Dancer, an Illinois-bred who earned more than $500,000 racing in the early to mid-1990s; and Coni Bug, an Illinois-bred champion winner of the 1992 Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs. 42
