Jockey Profile Pablo Morales Born: September 5, 1988 Birthplace: Lima, Peru Residence: Tampa, FL Family: Wife, Erin; daughter, Sophia; son, Camilo First Win: Alena’s Boy, Gulfstream Park, 2005 Started Riding: 2004, Monterrico, Peru Circuit: Tampa Bay Downs, Presque Isle Downs Precocious is one word used to describe Pablo Morales. He earned his first North American victory at Gulfstream in 2005 before his 17th birthday; that same year, just after turning 17, he captured the Grade II, $750,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs aboard The Daddy. Talented is another spot-on definition. Morales won three consecutive riding titles at Presque Isle Downs in Erie, Pa., from 2011-2013 before settling for second the next two seasons. By late summer of 2016, he was in contention for another title. Morales finished eighth in the Oldsmar standings last season with 31 victories. Earlier in his career, Morales spent two winters riding at Aqueduct in New York for such leading trainers as Gary Contessa, Kiaran McLaughlin and H. Graham Motion, but welcomes the chance every winter and spring to compete at Tampa Bay Downs. He recorded career victory No. 1,000 in 2014 at Presque Isle Downs aboard For Scipion. One of several jockeys from Peru to ride in Oldsmar in recent years, Morales graduated from the same jockeys school in Peru as Hall of Fame member Edgar Prado, West Coast standout Rafael Bejarano and Oldsmar rival Fernando De La Cruz. Morales achieved back-to-back stakes victories in 2015 at Presque Isle and Parx aboard the filly R Frosty One for trainer Eduardo Rojas, his father-in-law. Erick D. Rodriguez Born: March 3, 1980 Birthplace: Ponce, Puerto Rico Residence: Tampa, FL Family: Sons, Cristian and Adrian; daughter, Ericka First win: Parx Racing, 2002 Started Riding: 2001, Calder Race Course Circuit: Tampa Bay Downs, Delaware Park, Laurel His ability to produce a mount’s best effort on the Tampa Bay Downs turf course helped Rodriguez land the 2016 Florida Cup Pleasant Acres Stallions Distaff Turf aboard 24-1 shot Speed Seeker, but it isn’t only local trainers who know of his mastery on the grass. In 2014, Rodriguez was the only jockey to win two graded stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, capturing the Endeavour and the Hillsborough (both Grade IIIs at the time) on the 5-year-old mare Cloud Scapes, a Pin Oak Stable homebred trained by H. Graham Motion. Rodriguez learned early in his career that being a jockey can be dangerous, but the rewards can be immense. In 2005, four months after breaking four vertebrae in his back, he won the abbreviated summer meeting at Pimlico. He had a strong summer at Presque Isle Downs in Erie, Pa., in 2015, riding 74 winners to finish third in the standings. He moved his tack to Delaware for the summer of 2016. Rodriguez built his career from the ground up, galloping and breaking horses in Puerto Rico before coming to the mid-Atlantic region. Rodriguez earned his first graded-stakes victory on Ryan’s For Real in the 2008 Grade III, $200,000 Bill Hartack Memorial Handicap at Hawthorne for trainer Dale Capuano. He is closing in on 1,500 career victories. 34

Jockey Profile Ademar Santos Born: August 27, 1975 Birthplace: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Residence: Oldsmar, FL Family: Wife, Rose; sons Lucas, Gabriel, and Rafael First Win: The Cure, Hipodromo de Gavea, Brazil, 1993 Started Riding: 1993, Hipodromo de Gavea, Brazil Circuit: Tampa Bay Downs, Presque Isle Downs, ThistleDown Santos seems to heat up with the weather. He won the $5,000 Jockeys’ Challenge in 2014 and 2015 during Tampa Bay Downs’ Summer Festival of Racing, winning four races and finishing in the money on all 11 mounts during the 2015 event. His three winners on the first day of the Summer Festival boosted him to seventh in the 2014-2015 standings with 29 victories; he finished 10th in the standings in 2015-2016 with 28 victories and took third in the 2016 Jockeys’ Challenge. Santos knows a positive attitude is his key to success on the track. “As long as I stay motivated and stay positive, I can keep improving,” he said. “I have an Equicizer (a mechanical horse) at home and spend a half-hour on it every morning after working out seven or eight horses at the track, so I think I’m as fit as anybody.” His wife and sons — 9-year-old twins Lucas and Gabriel and 7-year-old Rafael — are his biggest supporters. Scott Spieth Born: October 25, 1966 Birthplace: Litchfield, Michigan Residence: Oldsmar, FL Family: Fiancee, Aldana Gonzalez; Daughters, Kirsten Swan, Victoria, and Valerie; sons, Austin and Bruin First win: Glendale Downs, 1981 (Quarter Horse) Started Riding: 1981, Glendale Downs Circuit: Tampa Bay Downs, Delaware Park Four years after reaching the 4,000-victory mark at Tampa Bay Downs, Spieth achieved another milestone at the Oldsmar oval last April, visiting a winner’s circle for the 4,500th time aboard the 4-year-old filly Awesome Indeed. Making the occasion doubly meaningful was that the horse was trained by Spieth’s fiancée, Aldana Gonzalez. Spieth has set his sights on reaching 5,000 victories before hanging up his tack, and anyone familiar with his skills, determination and work ethic won’t bet against him. From 2000-2008, Spieth often rode two cards a day, competing at ThistleDown outside Cleveland during the day and at Mountaineer in West Virginia at night. Spieth rode 307 winners in 2005 and averaged 269 a year from 2005-2007. In 2009, he recorded perhaps the most memorable victory in his career in the $500,000 West Virginia Jefferson Security Cup Cavada Breeders’ Classic at Charles Town aboard 3-year-old filly My Sister Margaret. “I’ve put in my time, that’s for sure,” Spieth says. “I’ve had spills that could have been major problems but haven’t been, so I’ve been lucky. I guess I would describe myself as being very dedicated toward the business.” He credits his parents, Lavern and Gearldine, as well as his brothers, former Quarter Horse trainer Tony and equine dentist and blacksmith Jason, for their lifelong support. His daughter, Kirsten Swan, is a top jockey of Arabian-bred horses who won the 2014 Darley Award. 35
