An elderly motorcyclist was living all alone.
He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was
very difficult work, especially as the ground was so very
hard.
His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison.
The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his
predicament:
Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad because it looks like I won’t be able
to plant my tomato garden this year.
I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I
know if you were here my troubles would be over.
I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like the
old days.
Love, Dad
A few days later he received a letter from his son.
Dear Papa,
Don’t dig up that garden. That’s where the bodies are
buried.
Love, Vinnie
At 4 a.m. the next morning, The Scorpions and local
police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding
any bodies.
They apologized to the old man and left.
The next day the old man received another letter from
his son.
Dear Papa,
You can go right ahead and plant the tomatoes now. As
that was the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love you, Vinnie
WHAT A SON !!!!
Don’t miss next months issue - we have had to carry quite
a few features over - like the PikiPiki2 ride on the Tibetan
Highway - Boyz on bikes part 3, The Kubota 900, more
Roof news and all sorts... Sometimes, we just dont have
enough pages to cram it all in... See you out on the trails!
NEWS
brought to you by
Yamaha’s new 2017 off-road and mx models:
For 2017, there is nothing huge coming from Big Blue, just some minor and medium sized changes,
primarily focused on the 250 four-strokes. The YZ250F and YZ250FX see a new cylinder head and intake
system, transmission changes, some minor chassis changes, and suspension valving changes to match.
The YZ450 only gets four minor changes: a new air box cover, new rear brake disk material, new Dunlop
MX3S tires, and new graphics. The WR250 and 450 are the same as last year’s models except for black
rims and the new air filter cover. The two-stroke motocross models are still available and the YZ125 and
YZ250 both get 270mm front brake rotors (up from 250mm).
Here are all the changes to each model coming straight from Yamaha. For full specs and features go to
yamaha-motor.com
The 2017 YZ250F has changes to both the
engine and the chassis.
NEW FOR 2017:
New Cylinder Head and Intake System: The
compact four-valve cylinder head features
revised intake geometry for additional downdraft
effect, matched to shorter intake funnel in the
airbox, for improved top-end power. Inside
the head, more aggressive camshaft profiles
and valve springs boost output further, while
larger valve seats ensure excellent sealing and
reliability.
Stronger Connecting Rod and Crankcase: The
entire die-cast crankcase features a new heat
treating process to increase strength. Inside, a
new nickel-chromoly steel connecting rod offers
additional durability to handle the increased
power output.
Updated Transmission: New gear dogs, revised
gear tooth designs and a host of smaller
changes create a smoother overall transmission
with improved shifting, as well as a stronger
overall powertrain for improved durability.
Updated Frame and Suspension: Revised
engine mounts and a reshaped swingarm pivot
section of the aluminum frame improve lateral
rigidity, while 5mm lower footpegs help lower the
rider’s center of gravity for improved machine
balance and control, revised suspension settings
front and rear to match the chassis updates.
Simplified Servicing: Redesigned air cleaner
cover helps prevent contact with the
quickrelease quarter-turn Dzus® air box
fasteners and provides tool-less access to the
air filter, positioned at the front of the bike to
avoid roost.
6 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016
Big blue’s big bike saw small changes for 2017.
NEW FOR 2017:
Simplified Servicing: Redesigned air cleaner over
helps prevent contact with the quick-release
quarter-turn Dzus® air box fasteners, providing toolless
access to the air filter that’s positioned at the
front of the bike avoiding roost from the rear wheel.
New Rear Brake: Updated rear brake rotor material
that has better heat resistance providing better
durability and braking feel.
New Dunlop® MX3S® tyres: For 2017, the YZ450F
features soft-to-intermediate terrain tyres.
New Graphics: Stylish new graphics treatment
brings the YZ450F even closer to that pure factory
racer look, that are molded directly into the plastic,
for extended durability, resisting both peeling and
damage.
YZ250/125:
The only update to the two-strokes is a larger front
brake rotor. The New 270mm front disc brake
(up from 250mm) also features a new brake pad
material for improved stopping power and control
for aggressive corner entries.
NEWS
brought to you by
2017 Sherco
Motorcycles First Look:
After what was a big model year for the French
brand in 2016, Sherco have worked to bring
refinements and tweaks across the range rather
than drastic changes.
And as current leaders in EnduroGP thanks to
Matt Phillips, and Hard Enduro wins and podium
results thanks to Wade Young, their belief of sell
what you race on, sees that race technology
fed down to the consumer.Sherco, which has
manufacturing plants in both France and Spain,
has released its line of 2017 off-road bikes. The
company is probably best known for its trials bikes
but is coming on strong in the enduro, or off-road,
segment. Revealed here are the 2017 Sherco 250
and 300 SE-R Factory two-stroke off-road bikes,
and the 2017 Sherco 250, 300 and 450 SEF-R
Factory four-stroke off-roaders.
Straight off the bat it’s clear Sherco have a different
look for 2017. Both four-stroke and two-stroke
models feature a distinctive new bodywork design.
Strengthened and reinforced, the dual compound
plastics feature in-mold graphics with Sherco’s mix
of bright blue and day-glo yellow colour scheme.
Fuel capacity of the translucent plastic fuel tanks
has been increased for MY17. The four-stroke
models are 9.7L - that’s a 1.2 litre increase - and
two strokes are 10.4 litres - up by 0.9 litres.
Engineers have made changes to the chassis
geometry while reinforcing it in numerous points.
Improving the linkage system sees less wear and
tear, with linkage axle pins increased to 14mm
diameter and improved sealing on bearings. The
rear shock has a new preload ring added.
Other changes include frame guards as standard,
new front wheel spokes, factory grips, clip holders
for front brake and speedo cables, hand guards
and factory grips. Both two and four strokes
feature bash guards as standard.
250/300 SE-R Two Stroke
Both the 250 and 300 SE-R benefit from a new
balance crankshaft. With a reduction in vibration
there is a smoother power delivery especially at
10 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016
low revs. The new V Force 4 reed assembly aids
low speed power while providing longer reed life.
Technicians have worked on carburettor settings
to reduce detonation and the pinking effect on
deceleration. The cylinder head frame mount
has been strengthened. The 250 receives a new
piston too.
250/300 SEF-R Four Stroke
Both models feature common changes. New
transmission gears see a 20% increased lifetime,
plus an improvement on bearing lubrication. The
fuel pump has been redesigned and the keyless
injection wiring system (introduced in 2016) has
been reworked. The 250 SEF-R gets a new forged
piston that improves durability by 20 per cent
without additional weight or inertia.
450 SEF-R Four-Stroke
The cylinder head and lubrication has been
modified on the 450 SEF-R for 2017. The new
cylinder head design simplifies assembly, improves
durability while reducing weight. Better clutch
lubrication improves overall feeling and action. The
450 SEF-R also gets a redesigned fuel pump.
No word yet on prices or when they’ll be showing
up on showroom floors, but we expect it to be
very soon.
2017 Sherco 250 SE-R Factory
Some of the updates to the off-road bikes include
a major re-do of all the plastic, which is said to be
far more durable, and has in-mold graphics. Other
common changes include higher-capacity fuel tank,
modified chassis geometry, frame reinforcements,
revised shock linkages, larger-diameter axle,
stronger swingarm, stronger spokes and new grips.
Testimonial: “After careful consideration and thought I finally decided the sell my MV Agusta F4
RR from my collection as it sadly wasn’t getting used.
The thought of placing adverts in all the usual places like autotrader, gumtree etc. was quite
scary to say the least. Just too many joy riders and scammers. I had seen the activities of
“Fire it up Motor cycles” and “Bike Buyers” on Facebook, having known the guys I decided to
approach them to take over the business of selling this fine motorcycle.
From the outset their approach to assisting me was highly professional. From the negotiation
regarding my price and their floor price to their knowledge of the current market conditions I
was confident that I was in competent hands.
The Conclusion:- They took the bike on consignment.
We agreed on my price and the floor price (Not a great margin I must add)
Within 2 weeks they had a buyer and I got the price we agreed upon.
Within 24 hours my money was in my account.
I will highly recommend them should you wish to sell your bike. It’s that easy.
Last Hoorah for Syringa Spa
MX track, 5th November.
“Since 1965 the name Syringa Spa has been
considered as the “Home of South African
Motocross”. Sadly this will be the last race
to be held at the iconic venue that has been
serving the South African Motocross scene for
over 50 years so we really want to make this a
spectacle that celebrates the venue, it’s long
history and the Stander family. It’s quite fitting
that the last race event there will be Vintage
MX as the bikes racing will represent a timeline
that showcase the history of the track. The
day will have a festival atmosphere with old
school music, period dress and have as many
of the old riders and heroes there to enjoy the
occasion. The day will see some exquisite
vintage dirt bike racing hammer and thongs,
lunch time will see a legends parade of past riders
and champions from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and
after the racing there will be a BIG send-off party
complete with a live band. Come join us in giving
Mechspec Racing Bike
Workshop opens in Kyalami:
Local Johannesburg bike team and riding group,
Mechspec Racing opened their Off Road and
Adventure Bike Service and Fitment Workshop in
Barbeque Downs, Kyalami this month. The workshop
focuses on maintenance and repair to all bike brands
and also features light retail for biking essentials plus a
social, community area upstairs on the mezzanine level.
The workshop features a repurposed shipping
container for a wash bay that doubles as an extension
to the mezzanine level and allows customers and
visitors a birds’ eye view of the workshop and MOTUL
fitment bays below. “We wanted a unique concept
for Mechspec Racing, the workshop,” says owner,
Matthew Gregory. “It is an extension of our MSR race
team and riding crew so it needed to be an engaging
space for customers and team mates and at the
same time operate as a professional and organized
workshop.”
Mechspec Racing is positioned in a light-industrial
factory unit in Barbeque Downs, a hub of motorsport
in the area, and is easily accessible from the highways
and surrounding arterial routes. Mechspec Racing is
open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 and on
the weekend for drop offs and collections. “We will be
available on Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 13:00
and Sunday afternoons from 14:00 to 16:00. We
are not in a traditional retail area so we can tailor our
operating hours to accommodate our customers. We
feel this will be a key differentiating factor for Mechspec
Racing.”
“We have identified off road and adventure bikes as
our key focus areas so have tooled up and stocked
up on essentials from leading brands such as Fox,
Metzeler, Dunlop and Alpinestars to meet our customer
requirements.
“We invite you to come and take a look, try us out. We
hope it’s like nothing you’ve seen before,” concluded
Matthew. Visit Mechspec Racing at Unit 16 Barbeque
ROOF OF AFRICA 2016:THE
COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN!!
30th November to 3rd
December 2016
Some big names to feature at this years Roof
Of Africa:
Husky’s Graham Jarvis is coming out to defend
his title against the likes of...
Paul Bolton, Lars Enöckl and Andreas
Lettenbichler. The amazing Billy Bolt will be riding
for Alfie Cox Racing KTM - and there are strong
rumours that Alfredo Gomez is coming to play in
the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. We’ve heard
that there are two Yamaha riders also coming out
- but no confirmation on that just yet...
It’s very cool that more and more international
names are making their way to our shores but
they are not in for a picnic - our local racers are
HUNGRY to win on African soil... and looking
at the fantastic year that our lot have had, the
Europeans have got a fight on their hands...
lady to ever ride Gold? Tough like biltong! its going
to be something to see.
the event is oversubscribed, with an army of
technical riders waiting in the wings to enter.
There is a lot more news filtering through - by our
November issue we’ll have a lot more for you -
but this years Roof is going to be a spectacle of
some note!!
In the interim, the Roof organizers ask very nicely
that if you head for Lesotho to practice that you
stay out of any cultivated areas..
COVER STORY
Clive strugnell Pics Kyle “digger” Lawrenson
24 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016

First Ride
International test by Sean Klinger... coz the bike is not here yet...
For 2017, Kawasaki went to work on its quarter-litre race
bike changing up the frame, engine, intake, air box,
swing arm, radiators, seat, tank, linkage, shock spring,
fork spring, and a number of smaller changes. Suffice
it to say, there are very few interchangeable parts between the
’16 and ’17 bikes. All of these changes were aimed at making
the bike lighter, a claimed 106 kg. Curb weight which is a 1.6 kg
saving over last year’s bike.
Engine
There are quite a few engine changes to the motor and intake
system that really did translate to a different feeling bike on the
track. The cylinder has a new 7-degrees more forward offset
that results in the downdraft intake having a more direct line to
the the combustion chamber. Also the second of the dual fuel
injectors is all new and has 8 spraying holes instead of four. The
cylinder head has a new process of machining after it is cast,
not unlike what race shops do. The piston is 6 grammes lighter,
has a bridge-box bottom design that is stronger, and has a
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016 25

Molybdenum coating to reduce mechanical
loss and reduce wear. On top of the engine
the valve train has been lightened by
titanium valves, revised exhaust camshaft,
revised camshaft sprocket, and a slimmer
and lighter cam chain. The last of the
engine changes is lighter flywheel aimed at
creating a quicker revving motor.
Did we feel all of these changes on the
track? Absolutely. While the 2016 KX250F
had a punchy, thick feeling power, the
lighter engine on the ’17 model definitely
revs quicker and has more exciting power.
Yet, we wonder if they made it too quick
revving since we were grabbing gears
sooner than we’d like. The motor revved
out to the limiter before we thought it
should, especially with the white (more
aggressive) electronic coupler. The stock
green coupler had OK bottom, great
mid and pretty good top end and over
rev. So, to get the best of both worlds,
Kawasaki made a map that is somewhere
between the green and white couplers
by just leaning out the fueling in the first
50 percent of the power. The result was a
better, more exciting hit on bottom with no
detriment to the top end power. This was
both testers favourite setting for the day.
Suspension
The front of the Kawi still has the Showa
SFF Type 2 Fork with one side having a
spring and the other side handling all of
the damping, yet they revised the valve
settings and put in a stiffer spring (9.8 N/
mm from 9.6 N/mm). Also the inner fork
tubes are thicker for more rigidity and a
new coating on both the outside of the
inner tube and the inside of the outer tube
for less friction. The front of the bike also
sees a more rigid bottom clamp for more
precise turning.
Out back the spring is both physically
lighter and has a lighter spring rate (52
N/mm from 53 N/mm) and shock has
new settings to match all of the chassis
changes. On the track, there wasn’t a
massive difference between the ’16 and
’17 bikes as far as suspension goes, but
we did notice how smooth the fork action
was, which was more comfortable without
giving up performance. Our faster ride
went four clicks stiffer on the fork while our
vet-speed rider preferred the stock setting.
The knuckle and tie-rod were revised
and, perhaps because of this, changing the
sag setting on the KX250F has a massive
difference on handling and front-end feel.
The suggested sag range is 100 to 110 mm
with a sweet spot at 105 mm. One of our
testers normally prefers a little less sag so
he started at 100 mm which actually made
the Kawi twitchy and put too much weight
on the front wheel. Dropping it down to 106
made a huge difference and balanced the
bike out.
26 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016

New 2017 model
K15236
The new 2017 KX250F offers a more powerful engine, a signifi cantly lighter chassis, and slimmer ergonomics,
making the new model the fastest KX250F yet.
KEY FEATURES:
Kawasaki SA
Find your nearest dealer at www.kawasaki.co.za

Handling
Other than the engine changes this was
probably the biggest area of change
on the bike. The frame spars are closer
together, the front down tube has a new
design, and the radiators have been
angled inward to make the shrouds three
and a bit centimetres slimmer. The seat
has a flatter profile and the seat base
is reinforced with a new seat hook. The
tank is a little bit larger (6.05 litres to
6.43 litres) but sits lower in the frame
increasing mass centralization. The swing
arm is new with the changes aimed at
reducing weight.
Now, Kawi’s have had a reputation
of being rear-end steering bikes and
while we won’t go as far to say as the
KX250F is now a front-end steering bike,
we would say that the bike is more of
a neutral steering bike and with a few
adjustments could be either a front or
rear steering bike. Both of our testers
consider themselves more front-steerers
and had a very easy time getting the KX-F
to corner. While the ’16 bike had a little bit
of a lazy handling feel and was sluggish
to change directions, the ’17 machine is
much quicker and more willing to respond
to rider input. The lighter weight and new
seat orientation combined to make the
Kawi easier to lean into a turn and keep it
tucked into a rut.
If there are any downsides to the new
chassis and lighter weight of the bike is
that, after riding the ’16 and ’17 bikes
back-to-back, the newer model loses
just a tiny bit of Kawasaki’s trademark
stability. But both testers would happily
make the trade of a little less stability to
get the quick handling and easy turning
of the new bike.
Overall
After a day of riding at Zaca Station
in California it is safe to say that the
changes to the 2017 Kawasaki KX250F
were a move in the right direction. The
motor changes make
the power quick
reving and exciting
and with a few
adjustments can be
really fun and fast
powerplant, while
the chassis changes
and lighter weight make the KX-F more
responsive and easier to ride. We’ll have
to wait for the 250F MX Shootout to see
how the green racer stacks up against
its cohorts but we have a feeling, a very
strong feeling, that it will do quite well...
The bikes are on their way. Full local
Story Clive Strugnell pics Zenon.
30 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016

Husqvarna has a long and proud
motorcycling history, and since the early
days when the Marque was founded and
produced in Sweden, it has travelled a bit
of a rambling pathway to where it is now.
Did you know that Husqvarna claims
(is) the longest established motorcycle
manufacturer in history? Husqvarna’s
first motorcycle was unveiled in
1903 - a ‘motorised bicycle’. As the
oldest motorcycle manufacturer with
uninterrupted production, Husqvarna has
learnt a thing or two over the course of
110-years of development.
Husqvarna now belongs to an orange
brand in Austria, and has been positioned
as a premier brand to showcase the
expertise of the parent company. So
how does all of this affect Husqvarna?
Well it’s all about money. There is serious
money to invest in all the expertise they
need to make sure that as their premium
brand Husqvarna deliver the best product
possible, and they have the expertise
and the budget to market these superb
products properly.
Does the new 2017 enduro range
deliver on this promise? Hell yes!
For a start they all look absolutely
gorgeous. Husqvarna have always made
good looking bikes. When they were
really Swedish they had the same anvil
like solid look that Volvo cars used to
have, but they had clean lines and were
painted in a very distinct white with
traces of blue and yellow, the colours
of the Swedish flag. For some years
this was lost, but recognising the value
of the current nostalgic love of past
achievements, the original colour scheme
is back. Also the design of the bikes is
slap bang up to date. These are certainly
not bikes to decorate with aftermarket
decal kits - they look best just as they
leave the factory.
For 2017 the entire range has been
quite extensively redesigned. Firstly
they all get the latest up to date
compact motors, complete
with more torque and power,
lighter weight and vibration
eliminating balance shafts.
All of them except the 125 have new
technology lightweight lithium ion
batteries to power their electric starters
and enduro spec lights. In line with
European rules they also have hooters
and can be fitted with indicators (what
a brilliant idea… when your mate is
hustling along right behind you in a race
indicate right and turn left, that’s sure to
put him off!)
From there on they are quite a lot
different to their orange siblings. The new
models all have new lighter frames with
different torsional stiffness which is said
to improve the handling.
As the motors are now
silky smooth thanks to
exceptionally good
carburetion and
their new balance
shafts, parts
Cutaway of the 2-stroke...
Cutaway of the
4-stroke...
The team behind this brand...
really going places.
engine mounts and engine bolts can all be
smaller and lighter and still be able to cope.
All models feature the unique linkage mounted
White Power rear suspension. The linkage allows
the rear suspension to be more-supple than
direct mounted shocks.
In addition, the shock itself is longer, and
carries more oil, and this, together with the
linkage regulated movement keeps the shock
cooler, which ensures that the suspension
performance is consistent during a long race.
Of course the linkage type suspension is a bit
heavier than a directly mounted one, so to keep
the overall weight down, Husqvarna fitted a very
trick carbon composite rear sub frame. When we
asked the Husky SA boss if this could be a weak
point, his reply was that when a version of this
was fitted to some models last year he thought
that just to be sure he would keep a few spare
ones in stock, especially for the Roof of Africa
Bikes… and guess what, they are all still sitting
on the shelf!
The front suspensions are the latest XPlor48
from White Power, with fully adjustable rebound
and compression adjustment. On the Huskies
they can be adjusted by hand.
Another feature of the 2017 Huskies is the
adjustable mapping of the electronics. By simply
flicking a switch, which can be done on the move,
the engine characteristics can be selected at will.
This allows the rider to choose the mode he needs
to cope with different riding conditions. This is an
optional extra on other European brands.
What are they like to ride? We had the full
range available at Rhino Park, which is between
Benoni and Cullinan to the East of Pretoria, and
is a great place to ride. What’s more it has a wide
range of riding area ranging from fast open trails
to technical slow riding through quite dense bush
to a fast and sandy MX track. There is also a
quarry which is a good test of any bikes’ ability
to cope with steep slow climbs.
THE 2016 2-STROKE ENDURO MODEL RANGE.
The joy of the ride is often in finding routes that nobody else has used – reaching
destinations that few others would dare to aim for. The 2016 Husqvarna Motorcycles
2-stroke enduro bikes rely on exceptional agility, a broad powerband and light
weight – letting you easily explore wherever you choose to go.
The TX 125:
This little bike weighs well under
100kgs, and is the only one in the range
that has to be kick started. Once on the
move it feels exactly what it is, a high
revving tiddler that needs speed. The
suspension can be set relatively softly
because of the exceptionally light
weight of the bike. This light weight
and softer long travel suspension,
together with the surprisingly torquey
motor, lets the bike simply float over
the roughest terrain. In fact with a
good lightweight rider any of the
other bikes in the range will be hard
pressed to keep up with it on anything
other than a long open straight. The new
125 motor, which differs from last year’s
one mainly by having a lighter crankshaft
and a heavier alternator rotor, revs forever,
probably over 13 000rpm at full chat. This
means the bike flies over bumps and jumps
just like the thoroughbred it is, and can be
held in lower gears if necessary. It is really
a gem of a racer.
TE 250/TE 300 Two-strokes:
With two stroke European enduro bikes
currently enjoying unprecedented popularity,
and rightfully so, in racing circles, we
expected the new Husky 250 and 300
to be something special. And they are.
Awesomely fast, they are also exceptionally
controllable, thanks to their light weight,
factory evolved geometry and surprisingly
tractable motors.
The 250 storms across any terrain thanks
to the seemingly unburstable turbine-like
two-stroke engine, which is now silky
smooth thanks to a balance shaft and a
heavy-ish alternator rotor. It will pull all
the way up to 13 000rpm, yet still has
exceptional grunt at low speed, which is
great for technical riding and grinding rocky
uphill sections. Thanks to good ergonomics
it can also be quite relaxing but still fast,
which is nice for rides which take a long
time. Not snappy at all like a two stroke MX
machine either – and power wise – it makes
torque in a very similar way to the TE 300.
34 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016

The TE 300:
The TE 300 has the same two-stroke
motor but with just a little extra capacity,
which give it a harder hit in the mid range,
at the expense of a bit of smoothness at
peak rpm. This is a weapon for riders who
expect to be at the front of the field and
who can make the best use of a full factory
spec racer, which this bike is. In fact all the
factory probably does when prepping a TE
300 for Graham Jarvis to win the Roof on
is plak on his sponsors decals and his race
number!
FE 250/FE 350/FE 450/FE 501 Fourstrokes:
The 4-stroke bikes in the FE family have
also undergone the same evolution. They
have new frames, new engines, the XPlod48
front forks and the latest White Power
stuff on the back to keep the wheel on the
ground. However they all feel different, and
it was interesting listening to the remarks
of other riders, some of them being current
competitors. There were a lot of opinions
on which of the four strokes were the best
to ride.
The FE 250:
It loves to rev, and to be honest, felt like
it had been hammered from new, as it is
certainly the noisiest engine amongst the
entire range. However, once on the move
its’ collection of valves, cams and gears
co-ordinate into a thrilling symphony of
mechanical sound, underscored by an
awesome intake howl. It simply begs the
rider to keep the throttle pinned and search
for more terrain to conquer. It is also
probably the easiest four stroke for riders
used to the characteristics of a racing two
stroke, to make the transition on.
36 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016

The FE 350 and FE 450
These offer more of the same, but with a
bit more refinement and undeniable grunt
from their bigger motors. They also provide
more engine braking, like most four-strokes,
deliver lots of torque at any RPM. Of course
one of the attractions of a big four stroke
is the booming exhaust note, and these
Huskies deliver that, although thanks to new
noise rules there will be fewer deaf 50yr old
riders in years to come.
FE 501.
This is the big Mutha of the Husqvarna
range, and although it has had all of the
2017 magic spread over it, making is faster,
but easier to ride it is still one monster son
of a gun. We loved every minute of it. When
it comes to winning races, unless you are
Godzilla with exceptional talent, most times
you will be blown off by someone on one
of the smaller bikes, especially in a modern
enduro where “technical” riding is the
order of the day. Twenty years ago when
the Toyota 1000 or the Roof of Africa were
longer and faster, this bike would have been
unbeatable. However, that was way back
then. Nowadays it is a good racebike, but
it’s an even better all round off road bike, as
at home doing a long distance off road ride
as blasting around the dunes or the dumps
on a Sunday morning.
The bottom line with the new 2017
Husqvarna range is that there are a lot of
different bikes to choose from. All of them
are absolutely top drawer, and are really
ready to race. Every possible component
that riders of other brands could fit to make
their bikes more competitive is standard.
Also Husqvarna, as one would expect
from a premium brand, have a readily
accessible technical department as several
exceptionally competent dealers.
READERS BUILD
CLASSIC
REBUILD
1975 HONDA XR75K2
Raymond Richards, he of Velocity
chemicals fame called us the other day.
“Got a little project bike I’ve built – come
and have a looksee..”
We arrived at his house to find a
little bike lurking under a blanket in the
garage – he pulled it away and under it
was this gleaming little 1975 XR75.
“I found it in someone’s garden” he
said – R1500 later it was at his house.
This bike was in a somewhat sad
state, it had obviously been crashed and
just left under someone’s afdak. The
tank was faded, the pipe rusty – even
the gear lever was held on with an old
shoe lace – but the bike was basically
complete and mostly original. After a fair
amount of research – the project was
given the green light.
Ray stripped her right down, removing
the engine, suspension and wheels and
sent the frame in for powdercoating.
The swing-arm bushes and bolts were
completely rusted, so Ray replaced the
old Teflon system with roller bearings
and a fresh swing arm bolt was found
and fitted.
The forks and suspension components
were all polished up – front seals and
oil were replaced, the rear shocks are
sealed but appear to be just fine.
The tank was sent to Nicks Cycles in
Benoni for a respray (back to original of
course) and the rest, Ray did himself.
Wheels and spokes were polished by
hand (It still has the original INONE tyres)
and the ratty old seat was dubbined to
its former glory by Mrs Ray in front of the
TV every evening.
The plastic mudguards and Number
board are original – not quite like the
modern ones, far less forgiving plastic
was used back then, so they were
sanded down and lovingly resprayed.
40 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016

The handlebars were polished up, new grips
fitted and the levers were matched up with units
in Nicks mighty parts container. Ray managed to
find a brake cable that almost fitted – but the real
McCoy has been sourced and is on the way from
the US.
Mechanically, Ray did not mess with the
engine – he cleaned it all and lovingly sprayed it
with high heat silver – but bead blasting is on the
cards at a later stage. There was a big ding in the
pipe – Game Services was consulted on this, it
was sorted and resprayed to original.
The chain was a mess, so a new one was fitted
and a rear sprocket was made up for the bike.
Ray re-fitted the engine – and cleaned out the
carburettor. Popped in a bit of fuel –and… she
fired up quite quickly.
We asked for a spin but he declined - ‘This
bike is not for riding. It’s going to find a home in
my pub one day.”
What a cool rebuild. What a great little bike. A
few bits and pieces are still being sourced, we’ll
check in again soon…
Total cost to date: lots of elbow grease and
about 4k so far…
AFRICA’S TOUGHEST
1 DAY
EXTREME
ENDURO
On 2&3 September 2016, Interpack hosted the legendary Red Bull Braveman at Farm Elisenheim.
19 of the 32 riders that entered from South Africa, Cambodia, Zambia and Namibia managed to finish
the race.
Brett Swanepoel (Yamaha), Travis Teasdale (KTM SA) and Dwayne Kleynhans (KTM SA) were able to secure
the best gold class starting positions at the prologue on Friday and had officials, team mates and spectators
clapping and cheering when all 3 riders crossed the finish line at the main race in a 3-way tie, clocking a race
time of 08:04:18, including a 60 min time penalty due to riding outside of marked route. Proud Namibian
rider Jörn Greiter finished 4th in gold class with only 21 minutes behind the first 3 finishers. This is a remarkable
achievement as most of the Namibian riders are not professional riders, but enjoy the sport on a social
platform. The last rider in gold class, Louw Schmidt, only came in after 9 ½ hours including penalty. Louw
mentioned that the Red Bull Braveman was the toughest meter by meter race he has ever ridden.
In silver class, only 4 out of 13 riders who raced the prologue on Friday, were able to finish the main race on
Saturday. Kirsten Landmann (KTM SA), winner of silver class in 2015, placed 2nd this year after going on the
wrong route at the start and therefore receiving a 60-minute time penalty.
According to Landmann, Red Bull Braveman took extreme to a new level, with the heat, dry terrain and
extreme loop it got the better of her. Nevertheless, she pushed through from starting back of the pack after
a not so good prologue run and got to the finish in 2nd place. South African mate Darren Gray was able to
gather 1st place with a total race time of 4:45:37. Namibian riders Corne Visser and Günther Gladis placed
3rd and 4th respectively and will next represent Namibia at the Roof of Africa in November 2016.
Bronze class saw 9 finishers, with RJ Visser clocking the best time of 2:21:55. RJ managed to secure a good
starting position at the prologue and shared the final podium with his Namibian companions Martin Diekmann
and Gerald Heiser.
The extreme heat and very loose and slippery mountain inclines made it extra difficult for all of the riders.
Additionally, all classes had to navigate with GPS which was definitely a challenge for many.
Jacques Coetzer, CEO of Interpack says: “The event was a massive success and exceeded any sort of expectation
we had. We are tremendously proud of all our riders and even prouder that one of our own was able to
secure 4th place in gold class. This is an outstanding achievement”.

THE SHERCO SE 50
MINI ME
So – when last did you hear
of ANYONE bringing in a 50?
Well guess what? Sherco does.
That’s who. We went off to
take it for a li’l spin…
Arriving at the Toyscom store in
Centurion, we found the little motard
nestled amongst its slightly bigger
siblings – the delectable SEF 250
and the SEF300 Factory Edition.
Great company for sure – and we
were quite surprised to see that the
50 is not actually that much smaller
than a full bike. To put things into
perspective – probably a bit smaller
than a Honda CRF 230. So it’s not
really designed for the pocket bike
market – but we reckon that it’s been
designed for the “cool” school kid
market.
50cc – sure – bear in mind that
a 125 will set you back quite a
few extra shekels – so maybe, just
maybe, this bike will appeal.
We rolled it off the showroom
and into the elevator. Gave it a
kick – and the water cooled two
stroke screamed to life – almost
asphyxiating the rider in the process.
The elevator opened in a haze of
blue smoke and we took off down
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016 47

the steps to terrorise the rustic streets of
Centurion.
Everyone knows that you are coming
coz the bike literally screams along –
not too much in the way of silencing –
reminds us of some of the very modified
50’s that used to scream around JHB’s
streets in the 80’s… But it’s only the noise
that’s similar. In all other regards, this is a
seriously up to date, modern motorcycle.
And it is beautifully finished with high
quality components…
Great suspension- even with a slightly
heavier rider than the intended target
audience, proper disc brakes front and
rear – in fact we’d say that if you are
looking for a bike to fling around practice
stoppies with, this would be a great
choice and the handling is really great.
Naturally – it’s only a 50 so don’t
expect great power at the bottom, but the
power band is fun and she accelerates all
the way up to the 75kph mark.
It howls along, pulls lots of attention
and endo’s for days. Is there a market
here? Maybe – dad rides a Sherco, lightie
rides a Sherco… great entry level bike.
Available in street and the enduro
model is on the water.
Imported by www.toyscom.co.za
Some other comments on the little
bike.
“The Supermoto 50 turns like a hungry
gull over a boat. The forks are beefy
41mm items from suspension experts
Paioli and the Ollé shock comes with
preload adjustment. If you want to
practice your stoppies then this is the
bike for you – the 260mm front disc is
mated to a hydraulic clutch and twinpiston
AJP caliper.”
“It’s possible to get over 75KPH from
the two-stroke Sherco just by swapping
the exhaust for a race-spec item. Further
tuning requires a bigger carb and, of
course, the trade-off is greatly reduced
reliability. The bore is Nikasil plated for
better efficiency, but that makes it more
expensive to replace as you can’t rebore
it.”
“Although Sherco are a Spanish
company their entire supermoto (and
enduro) output is made in France and the
quality of the manufacture is high. Good
quality stroker oil will keep it healthier
for longer – but it will need more regular
maintenance if you de-restrict it.”
Pack smart. Modern motorcycle
gear is very compact. Don’t
pack too much rubbish
Some Tips for adventure riders:
CHOOSING YOUR BIKE
1) Know your size. Adventure
machines are not dirt bikes. You won’t
be comfortable racing down the street
at 200 KPH on a dirt bike, so don’t
think for a minute that you should feel
comfortable traveling dirt bike speeds
off-road. It doesn’t take a physicist to
understand that force equals mass times
acceleration.
2) Pay attention to balance and the
muscles you’re using. If you’re exerting
too much energy or feel tense, you’re
likely out of balance and compensating
with strength or possibly speed. “Get
over the back wheel and gas it!” may
be a popular saying, but it’s not proper
technique.
3) When you bottom the suspension,
the bike is warning you. If you didn’t
expect the bike to bottom, take the
warning doubly serious. If the bottoming
continues, sooner or later, you’ll have a
broken bike, or worse, a hurt rider.
4) Standing on the foot pegs is key
to controlling a heavy machine in
demanding conditions. Your weight
becomes somewhat isolated from the
motorcycle and you can use all of it,
mostly through the pegs, to control the
bike.
5) If you venture beyond maintained
dirt roads, having knobby-style tyres
improves dirt handling and safety
appreciably. Though durability often
dissuades riders from switching to
knobs, you’ll never wear out any tyres
with a cast on your leg.
10 cool adventure riding tips:
We’ve got zillions of long distance
kilometres under our belts.
Here are some of the things we’ve
learned, which we hope will be helpful.
1) File a daily “Flight Plan” with
friends and relatives. When you’re
putting in big miles in unfamiliar places,
especially in remote areas, it’s a good
idea to give friends and family an idea
of where you’ll end up every day, and
when you’ll be checking in. At the least,
this will give your loved ones a sense of
ease about you riding alone. As riders,
we often discount the concerns of
others, because we know the rewards
of motorcycling. But if we do have
some issue, out on the road alone,
it’s wise to have someone back home
who’s thinking about us, and who can
reach out if you don’t check in after a
reasonable amount of time. 99 times
out of 100, the “Flight Plan” helps our
families feel better more than it helps us.
But you never know.
2) Start early, finish early. When we’re
on the road, we like to be up at 6:00am,
shower, breakfast, pack and on the
bike by 8am (earlier if possible). It’s an
incredible feeling watching the world
wake up from the seat of a motorcycle,
and if you’re planning to do big miles,
the earlier you start, the earlier you can
finish. As a rule, we are off the bikes
before dusk, certainly sunset.
Why? Well, dusk is when animals like to
run out in front of bikes. The changing
50 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016

Choose your bike carefully
- a smaller machine for solo
riding can be more fun...
light can also make it harder for drivers to see you, and
it’s harder for you to see road hazards. Pull into a town
in the late afternoon, choose a place to stay at leisure,
park the bike, get a quick nap and shower, dinner early,
bed by 10pm. That’s a recipe for being fresh on the bike,
getting in some good miles, and staying safe.
3) Earplugs. Try wearing earplugs, not just to protect
your hearing, but to dramatically reduce fatigue. we
use the no-nise units - cheap and effective - available
from most adventure shops. Helmets are noisy places,
especially at higher speeds on bikes without big
windscreens. Your brain tries really hard to process all the
wind noise and determine if there’s anything important
in there it needs to hear, which is an ongoing mental
strain. Earplugs cut out most (not all) of the noise, and
once you get used to them you can actually hear what’s
going around you much better. One real area of benefit
is your increased ability to ear any mechanical noise
coming from your bike, which is a huge safety plus.
Note: we don’t recommend custom earplugs with audio
capability for MP3 players or phones. In our opinion and
experience, they are distracting and you end up cranking
the volume up to compete with wind noise and can
damage your ears.
4) Use technology to regulate your body
temperature. With summer coming in fast - there have
been tremendous advances in cooling and warming
technologies for riders, so there’s no need to suffer in
the heat or cold weather. From Coolmax underwear
that wicks moisture away from the skin, to lightweight
base layers of merino wool that provide warmth with
maximum mobility, you don’t even need power to stay
cool or warm.
5) Inspect the bike regularly. It’s critically important that
you are aware of any mechanical issues your bike might
have before you start it, ESPECIALLY on a long distance,
ride. So check your bike in the morning before you start
it, check it when you wipe it down when you park it for
the day, check it when you fill up, when you stop for
lunch, for a photo……often! The main things to check
are: tyres – tread ok, no cords showing, no punctures,
nail heads? Chain and sprocket – any kinks, broken
teeth, metal shavings? And leaks beneath the bike, any
oil or anti freeze on the cases of the bike? Especially with
suspected leaks, clean the bike, start it, let it sit and run
for a minute, check again. Take care of your bike and it
will take care of you.
6) Travel light. When we first started touring, we had a
tendency to overpack. We brought all sorts of gadgets
and rubbish, so much stuff our bags hardly had room
for a change of clothes. Now when we tour, we can go
out for long tours with one small bag. How do we do it?
Well, we stick to the essentials, iPhone with a charger,
wallet, maps, led flashlight, multitool, couple of pairs of
underwear and socks, jeans and a few t-shirts. And a
microfiber towel for cleaning visors and windscreens.
And a first aid kit. And a good book. Leave the crap at
home! Traveling light is liberating and it takes way less
time to pack and unpack the bike twice a day. you might
not smell too good - but you get used to
that.
7) Paper maps and GPS As brilliant
as they are, we are not too fond of
GPS units attached to bikes. They’re
distracting and we’ve seen way too
many close calls when people are
screwing around with them instead of
watching the road. This behavior can
be especially dangerous in a group
riding situation. Instead, we recommend
getting the Google Maps (or your
preferred GPS app) for your phone, and
using it only when you’re off the bike.
And we love paper maps, because you
can visualize a much greater area than
the area of any GPS screen. Paper
maps actually make a GPS unit far more
useful, and they fit nicely in a tank bag.
Also, they don’t cause you to swear for
1/2 hour when a clamp comes loose
and they bounce down the pavement at
speed, unlike a GPS unit!
8) Eat smart. You know that food coma
you get after lunch every day, the one
you try to fight off with an espresso,
black coffee or some energy drink? You
don’t want to fight that fight on a bike,
so you need to think differently about
what you’re eating when you’re riding.
It’s hard to resist the pie chips and gravy
at the roadside stall, especially if you
don’t have a mate there to remind you
not to eat it! We try to have a reasonable
breakfast. Lunch should be light, and
daytime snacks should be healthy
energy like fruit, granola or yoghurt.
An early dinner is where we splurge -
braaivleis, steak, pie, beers…..you’re
off the bike and you’ve got a couple of
hours to digest your food before bed.
Eat a big meal just before bedtime and
you’ll have a rough night’s sleep. We
usually have dinner and then go for
a walk, maybe a swim if it’s summer.
And of course, alcohol in extreme
moderation, nothing worse than a big
mileage day with a hangover on board.
booze also makes you dehydrate...
9) Hydrate smart. Very few of us
drink enough water every day, and
this is a mistake you cannot make on
a motorcycle. Dehydration even in its
early stages induces fatigue, and as
it progresses you can get headaches,
muscle pain, nausea, and pass out.
None of these things are good on a bike!
It sounds like a cliche, but in the hot
weather, if you wait until you’re thirsty to
take a drink of water, you’re already too
late. You need to drink a litre an hour in
hot weather, so plan ahead and bring
enough water to supply you if you aren’t
near a service station. Also, don’t forget
that you need to drink water in the cold
weather too, as conditions are typically
very dry.
10) Use social media to enrich your trip
for yourself and others. If you don’t have
a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram page,
consider starting one before your trip.
Friends and family will enjoy following
you on your journey, seeing what you’re
seeing every day. A huge side benefit to
this is that some of the people following
you may have traveled in the same
places you’re touring, and can suggest
places to eat or stay and things to see
(as well as things to avoid) while you’re
there. You might even have friends come
out to meet you along the way, even
offer you a place to kip... And it’s easy
enough to upload photos, videos and
status updates to any of these sites with
your smartphone. Trust us – it will make
your tour more fun not only for you, but
for your social circle as well.
11) Make your emergency contact
and medical information easily
visible. If for some reason you become
unable to speak, the people trying to
help you will need to know what if any
medical conditions you have, including
prescriptions and allergies, and also who
to call. They’ll look for a medical bracelet
first, but if you don’t have one, how will
they know how to properly treat you
if you need help? The best way we’ve
seen to deal with is to stick the info on
your helmet and on your bike.
Hope you found these tips helpful....
FIRST RIDE
Days of
THUNDER
It’s taken us a long while to get our
mitts on to this one. We first clapped
our eyes on it at the show at Kyalami
in May – and since then we have
petitioned Yamaha every month…
when we heard that Linex Yamaha had
the unit for a day or two – so we took
off to their test area in Muldersdrift to
scare the hell out of the locals…
We have featured this rather sexy
1000 in previous issues, but this is the
first time that we can give you guys an
honest local opinion on this unit that is
performing so well globally. Our little
trail incorporated some fast flowing
tweespoor, some interesting gravel
and a cool little winding river section.
We can’t wait to get this thing out
into some faster dirt to really give it a
wringing…
What makes it tick:
This one features a 998cc inline triple
engine mated to a 5-speed sequential
shift gearbox… Hmmm now there is
something a bit unique in this here
industry. All of the other leisure machines
boast a CVT (belt drive) gearbox.
The triple cylinder 1000cc four-stroke
engine is actually derived from one of
Yamaha’s Snowmobiles. It has a compact
DOHC twelve-valve cylinder head, an
aggressive 11.3:1 compression ratio
and high-tech
dry-sump
lubrication.
Taking care of the dusty
South African conditions
is a high capacity intake
system featuring dual air
filters—one oiled foam,
one viscous paper—
affording great airflow
to the engine as well
as durable filtration
for the dirtiest riding
environments. The
re-usable foam filter
features tool-free access for easy
servicing.
The hydraulic clutch
system is operated by an
automotive-style foot
pedal.
On-Command 4WD is
standard. This system
also incorporates an
over-torque protection
system that eliminates spike
loads to the front drive case
on hard impacts, protecting it
from damage without affecting
performance.
The three-into-one pipe is
centred out back very cool and
they tell us that it is tuned to
provide maximum power across
the rev range. We have to say at
this point, that it does deliver a very
serious bellow.
The lurkers and rough stuff are all
handled by massive Fox Racing X2
Shocks front and rear. The shocks offer
high- and low-speed compression
damping adjustments, as well as highand
low-speed rebound, all conveniently
mounted to the top of the shock body.
All shocks also feature dual springs with
crossover adjustment— providing 16.2
inches front and 17.0 inches rear travel.
Ergonomics. Now this is where we
were especially impressed…
The cab features plush, high-back
seats with extra lateral support and
outside shoulder bolsters. The shaped
floorboards provide generous legroom
while still giving a planted feel during
aggressive driving, and both the driver’s
seat and steering wheel are adjustable
to ensure a good fit. The cab
The controls are really simple
innovation and all sxs’s should
is – a barrel of fun. In our opinion,
this is probably an understatement.
the landings were perfectly controlled
and smooth. Driving off camber, there
was no sign of the YXZ wanting to tip
or misbehave – the wide track keeps
her very stable without scaring the
passengers too much.
you shift down, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and the
world speeds up around you. Some SXS
aficionados will take a while to get used
to shifting gears rather than just putting
foot, but Yamaha’s system is very smooth
and refined. Linex’s Wayne Edwards was
in the passenger seat for the test and he
kept encouraging this fat editor to – well
go faster.
The beauty of the YXZ is the fact that
you can trundle around slowly in the
three bottom gears quite happily – but
she does prefer to be caned. Put your
foot down, the triple howls and a cloud
of dust erupts from the back wheels.
She revs to 10500 with a top speed just
under 125kph and the laugh inducing
excitement delivered is quite simply
fantastic. On the long straights you can
actually feel the backside starting to step
out… But power is only one part of the
experience.
We were very impressed with the
overall suspension and handling – It is
quite easy to understand why most of the
high-end performance machines choose
Fox – they are, quite simply remarkable.
We tried hard to get out of shape –
and failed. The ride is very smooth.
We tried to jump her on a pretty steep
embankment – but without a huge run
up – the long travel suspension did not
really allow us to get properly airborne –
in fact the front barely even lifted despite
our best efforts. The stiffer rear shocks
gave more of a seat bounce effect – and
CVT VS sequential:
Now here’s what you need to know. We
have always liked CVT because you
simply select high or low – and you put
foot without having to think about which
gear you are in – the system makes the
right power.
With the Sequential box on this YXZ,
particularly in the tighter stuff, although
the gear ratio’s are just fine, we had to
make sure that we were in the right gear
– so you attack a slow section in second
or third and you can end up stalling – or
working the clutch a bit harder. We reckon
that Yamaha has designed this one for fast
roads and desert sections – not really rock
crawling. But shifting gears and listening
to that pipe pop is a proper rush…
Conclusion:
Wow! Great machine, awesome fun to
drive. We look very forward to driving the
paddle shift version (yup fancy fancy!) –
and Yamaha offers a turbo conversion
for these things that will make it even
more exciting. We’ll do our damndest to
put one of thee up against an opposition
machine soon. Watch this space. For
now, contact your local Yammie dealer
for more info and availability…
BIG HITTERS
TAKE GLORY IN SWINBURN
Big hitters Go Big then go home...............some overseas!
Scotty Bouverie
Round 4 & 5 of the Liquorland National Enduro in Swinburne Free State - hosted
by Montrose!
The payback event!
Heidelberg National was a great event BUT we had no results due to an unfortunate
timing dilemma. We have all moved forward from this and have finally had the
opportunity to give back to the riders for the downfall.
2 months of preparation saw the national enduro team head out to the unknown
in the most amazing mountains and farmlands of a little Free State Village named
Swinburne.
If you have ever realised when stopping in at the Montrose Shell Garage, Mugg &
Bean, Steers, Debonairs, Biltong Shop, Fish Aways, Milky Lane, Liquorland Express
or Protea Hotel that you in fact were in Swinburne then you obviously did not blink
when you drove past. Next time stay a night at the Protea Hotel, check in with one
of the most amazing staff members Brenda, Ashley or GM Wayne and be sure to
wake up fresh and just drive a little towards the Drakensberg Mountains (left out of
the garage and left again onto the dirt road), you will be in absolute awe of the natural
surroundings of Swinburne. On your way out check out the local historic Hound
& Hare Restaurant, some stories can be told there that is for sure.
Why should we support business involved in our sport? Lets think about this one
for a second? The brands that see potential in our sport from the get go do so
because they foresee opportunities to grow there own business. Does it make sense
to support brands that do not support the sport you love? Why pay attention to the
brands that don’t pay attention to us?
Kenny Gilbert
Brett Swanepoel
Friday the 8 September saw the best of the best roll into Montrose - Swinburne
with thier branded vehicles and bikes looking ready for action.
Top athletes immediately headed out to walk the Racing Special tests, most starting
with the longer 8 Km’s special test sponsored by Kargo National. A Special Test set
up to challenge the average rider but to also get the top riders on thier toes. Safety
comes first and fun second, riders would find themselves starting in a dried up dam
at the bottom of the Rensburgkop Mountain range. From here heading into the foot
of the mountain where beautiful massive rocks “fallen from the heavens” would
meet them, a relatively fast section which would still test the skill of the faster riders
as they weave through this section going as fast and safely as possible.
Wade Young
Soon dropping into a quick downhill “Donga” or soil eroded section where there
were a few small drop offs and twisty bits. From the bottom they make there way
running next to a dam and through some natural forestry sections.
Then the challenge stareds as the riders started the first real hill climb of the day up
and over the Rensburgkop Mountain and down the other side. The last 4 Kms or so
of this Kargo National Special Test was an amazing “Donga Section” where riders
would have been tested for fitness, skills and agility. Twisting corners, drop off,
crossing gullies, through well prepared single track and to the finish.
The Yamaha bLU cRU MX Special was without a doubt the most
spoken about special over the weekend, riders were rubbing there
hands together they couldn’t wait to get started. After walking the
3Kms long special test it was decided that this would be confirmed
that this would be the spectator point that everyone would run to to
catch the most action.
The Leadertread Extreme Special 3 created some mixed feelings at
first with rider walking the special in 42kms wind it was hard for
them to see the actual track mid way down the mountain as all the
marking tape had been blown all over the place. None the less the-
Team managed to get the track in order before the Top riders came
through on their sighting lap on Saturday morning.
Kirst Landman
Then it was guns blazing.
After the decision was made at Riders Briefing that riders would
only race Special 1 on lap one due to a questionable section on
the Enduro Special riders set off at 8:30am after the hand over of a
YZ250F to Marius van der Bank #BurntBike by Yamaha SA GM for
Motorcycles Peter Wilkins.
A group of companies and individuals chipped in to assist Yamaha
SA with arranging a demo model bike to help replace the bike that
burnt at a local KZN Racing Cross Country Event. Marius a little
emotional after the hand over also joined the start line in the Junior
Clubmans Class.
From the start we could see riders were ready to do battle, easing
out of the start at Montrose, riders made their way to the bLU
cRU MX Special where they would be timed from the get go. Trav
Teasdale, the Brother Leadertread KTM rider was the first to twist
the throttle, goose bumps was an understatement as the KTM 300
took off like a rocket over the first ski jump around the first right
hand sweep corner and over the first table top, follow seconds behind
was Proudly Bidvest Yamaha rider Brett Swanepoel aboard his
250FX a bike blamed for tormenting the soul of the unexpected, the
aggressive sound of Brett’s machine is enough to scare anyone not
expecting the roar.
It was an amazing experience watching riders have so much fun on
the track built on the Hound & Hare property. Big jumps, awesome
corner track and some massive sweeping berms “Old School MX
Style” track.
The top 5 times on special 1
1: Wade Young - Sherco Factory Racing
2: Scott Bouverie - Brother Leadertread KTM
3: Richie van der Westerhuizen - MBE Midas Husqvarna
4: Henco Botha - Orange Brigade Alfie Cox Racing KTM
5: Kenny Gilbert - Kargo Racing Husqvarna
Travis Teasdale
Kyle Flanagan
Throughout the two days of racing it was electric to watch, riders
pushing the envelop to the max to ensure top positions. The Leadertread
Extreme Section proved to be an amazing spectator point
up on the mountain near the Appin Lodge, spectators lined the rock
sections for the best spectator points possible.
With almost full view of riders racing from the top to the bottom
along some of the most amazing terrain. Single track up through the
forests, down some rocky sections and along some fast tech sections
which kept riders on their toes.

ICONIC SYRINGA
SPA MX CIRCUIT
TO CLOSE FOREVER
“Since 1965 the name Syringa Spa has been considered as the
“Home of South African Motocross”. Sadly this will be the last
race to be held at the iconic venue that has been serving the South
African Motocross scene for over 50 years so we really want to
make this a spectacle that celebrates the venue, it’s long history
and the Stander family. It’s quite fitting that the last race event there
will be Vintage MX as the bikes racing will represent a timeline
that showcase the history of the track. The day will have a festival
atmosphere with old school music, period dress and have as many
of the old riders and heroes there to enjoy the occasion. The day
will see some exquisite vintage dirt bike racing hammer and thongs,
lunch time will see a legends parade of past riders and champions
from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and after the racing there will be a BIG
send-off party complete with a live band. Come join us in giving this
iconic venue the send-off it deserves.”
Probably South Africa’s most famous and best loved motocross
circuit is to close after one last meeting at the beginning of
November. Originally opened on the Zwartkops (not the racetrack,
the agricultural area between Muldersdrift and Lanseria Airport)
farm owned by South African Multiple motorcycle champion, the
legendary Jannie Stander, the farm has remained in the family and
has been run by two of his sons over the past 20 years or so.
When the off-road circuit was originally opened for racing in the late
60’s off road cars also raced there.
Over the years Syringa can take a lot of credit, firstly for providing
an absolutely brilliant setting for off road racing alongside the
Crocodile River, and then organising and promoting racing in
an era when Japanese off road bikes first hit the market. With
companies like Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki, as well as
many European brands like Husqvarna, KTM, Bultaco and Maico
all fielding sponsored teams, Motocross boomed. The first live TV
broadcast of MX racing was from Syringa. The Star and Citizen
newspapers often carried front page stories on the racing, and the
national Sunday newspaper, the Sunday Express, carried MX and off
road racing on its’ prime outside back page sports section. It also
ran an 8 page monthly Motocross and off road racing special full
colour supplement once a month for about four years. In addition
to this it sponsored its’ own MX team with multiple SA champion
Horace Bergstrom as its’ team leader.
A spectacular race track mega-coverage and the support of many
sponsored teams soon led to an age of MX superstars hitting the
headlines. Many enthusiasts will remember the epic battles fought
by riders like Grant Maben, Tyronne Stevenson, Robbie Wicks, Mark
Davies,Charlie Tissen, Ian McMillan, Horace Bergstorm, Toby Venter
and so many more. The Junior series spawned names like Gary
Bergstrom, Martin Jones, Deon Du Plessis, Symm Grobler… gosh
there are just too many to mention, although some other names that
spring to mind are Glen Farrow, Chris Brand, Roger Gledhill, Butch
Hirsch, Mike Hopkins and Mike Hermanson from the Cape and, well
the list just goes on and on. Oh yes, and then there was the Street
Scrambler class, which later became the Enduro class, and names
like Alan Smith, Chris Davies, Bunny Shandler the Upton Brothers,
Greg and Clive, Keith Rivers, John Phillips, Alex de Rapper, Gary
Draper, the list just goes on and on.
68 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2016

Syringa also opened the door
to fame to many other people,
like Roger McCleery, who for
many years was the voice of
Motocross, assisted by Dave
Richardson and Peter Reck. Simon
Fourie threw all the resources
he had behind mx racing, Helen
Morgan became famous for her
MX pictures and even produced
her own publication of off road
racing crashes, many of them at
Syringa. And what about Clive
Smith, sports photographer for
the Star, himself a podium finisher
in off road racing and the Roof
of Africa, who spent hours in the
darkroom at the Star developing
the many fabulous pics of Syringa
Stars which then appeared in their
Monday afternoon editions?
Who will ever forget the legions of
mothers and fathers who stalked
the trackside urging their offspring
to ride faster..Moeg Larney, Tom
Maben, Willie Grobler, Lynton
Draper, Casper du Plessis, Roger
McCleery, Kurt Werner and so
many more?
No one will ever be able to recall
all the names, and apologies to
those we have left out, but let’s try
and remember them all. Put them
on Facebook, and let’s try to make
as complete a list as possible.
After the tragic death of Jannie
Stander, the family have decided
to close the circuit forever, but
not before one last swansong.
The 5th November will be a day
of racing, celebrating the fabulous
history associated with Syringa,
and thanking the Stander family for
all the wonderful memories we all
have of Syringa Spa. What better
way to honour Jannie snr, Stan,
Jannie jnr and all of the Stander
family who gave so generously to
Motocross and off road racing over
the last 45 years.
As we always used to say “See
you at Syringa!”
MOST TITLES TO BE FINALISED AT
FINAL ROUND OF NATIONAL CROSS
COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP
There have been a few changes in the championship
standings of the 2016 SA National Cross Country
Championship for Motorcycles and Quads after the recent Koue
Bokkeveld 400 and the sixth and final round of the series on 28
and 29 October, promises to be a nail biting affair.
After leading the standings in the Senior and High School
Class championships in the motorcycle category from the first
event, both leaders were toppled at the KB400 in the Western
Cape albeit by a single point and fierce title battles can be
expected at the season finale. The season started badly for the
2014 and 2015 Senior Class champ, Juan ‘Bollie’ van Rooyen
(Brother Leader Tread KTM), but after winning the past four
races, he has overtaken the consistent Wynand Kleynhans
(Yamaha) and now leads by one point. Bruce May (Agrisales
Peak Yamaha Racing) is third and no threat to the two leaders.
The same scenario exists in the High School Class where the
2015 Junior Champion, Stefan van Deventer (Alfie Cox Junior
KTM Team) overtook Adriano Catalano (D&H Engineering Works
Yamaha) who was leading from winning the season opener in
Vryburg. Only one point separates them now. André Basson
(Yamaha) is third.
In the OR1 (Open) championship, a victory for Kenny Gilbert
(Kargo Racing Husqvarna) and a runner-up result for the class
leader, Ross Branch (Brother Leader Tread KTM) resulted
in Branch now only leading the defending OR1 champion
(Gilbert) by a mere three points with Gilbert targeting a second
consecutive OR1 title. Altus de Wet (BCR Arrow Yamaha
Racing) strengthened his third place, but can still pick up the
pieces if the battle between Gilbert and Branch explodes.
In OR2 (250cc) the defending champion, Louw Schmidt
(Brother Leader Tread KTM) survived a few scares to hold onto
the lead, but the former class leader Cameron Becker (KTM
Centurion Liqui Moly Racing) is now only eight points behind
in second place and will not give up on a possible first national
title. Brendon Fourie (Sherco Racing SA) has moved onto the
podium with four points separating him from Jaycee Nienaber
(Super Moose Racing KTM) who would like to round off the
season the way he started it – with a victory.
The fight for the OR3 (200cc) title is quite intricate as the
situation might not be quite as it seems. A third place at the
recent KB400 for Dartagnan Lobjoit (Yamaha) and a sixth place
for Wilhelm Schönfeldt (BCR Arrow Yamaha Racing) hit by
disaster just before the finish, kept them in first and second
place respectively with Lobjoit now six points ahead. Eduan
Bester (KTM Centurion Liqui Moly Racing) has also joined the
party as he trails Schönfeldt by only two points. The outside
factor is, however, the defending champion, Brett Swanepoel
UM 03, Clearwatermall, Hendrik Potgieter & Christiaan de Wet, Little Falls, JHB

Wayne Farmer
(Doorzone Bikers
Warehouse Husqvarna)
(Proudly Bidvest Yamaha) who
dropped way back after being unable
to finish the two Botswana races.
He added the KB400 victory to his
two wins earlier this year and with
25 points for a victory up for grabs,
he is still in with a fighting chance
for the title 19 points behind Lobjoit.
He shares the points’ standings with
Calvin Wilthire (Droomers Yamaha)
who finished on the OR3 podium at
the last two races.
In the Master Class, the
runner-up, Pieter Holl (KTM) is
applying pressure on the leader,
Wayne Farmer (Doorzone Bikers
Warehouse Husqvarna) and posted
his third consecutive victory at
the KB400 event. Farmer finished
second and leads Holl, who could
not complete the second race of the
season, by 19 points and dare not
make a mistake if he wants to bag
his fifth SA National Championship
title. Justin Broughton (Sherco
Racing SA) kept his third place
despite not competing in the
Western Cape.
In the 125cc Class Challenge, the
scholar Ryan Pelser (KTM) kept his
lead after winning this class for the
second time, but the experienced
Izak Mans (Droomers Yamaha) will not
let the youngster have it all his own
way if he can help it. Eleven points
separate them and Mans, who won
the season opener, will not only aim
for another victory, but also for the
title. Janco Pienaar (KTM) finished
three races and is third after claiming
a podium result at each race.
In the Ladies Class, neither
the leader, Riki Mans (Droomers
Yamaha) nor runner-up Karen
Jansen van Vuren (KTM) could
finish the KB400 with Mans (Izak’s
wife) still leading the scholar by
four points. Both ladies will feel the
pressure at the final event and more
entrants in this class can complicate
this title battle even further.
Riaan Prinsloo (Yamaha) has won
the Silver Inter Provincial Challenge
but he can make it five out of six
wins at the final race.
KTM lead the Manufacturer’s Award with 666
points ahead of Yamaha (585 points), Husqvarna (462
points) and Sherco (231 points) fourth.
In the quad category, the 2015 Dakar Rally hero,
Hannes Saaijman (Yamaha) posted his first win of the
season and still leads the Open Quad Class where
he is now being chased by Johan Oosthuizen (VANS
Racing Division Yamaha), who finished third at the
KB400 and overtook André Park (Yamaha) who could
not finish in the Western Cape. Saaijman is 17 points
ahead with Park trailing Oosthuizen by 11 points. All
three will have the title in their sights and all three
stand a chance of getting it although the odds are in
favour of Saaijman.
George Twigge (Yamaha) has claimed his third
consecutive Master Class championship in the quad
category despite having to settle for second place
after experiencing problems during the time-trial
at the KB400. Pierre van Heerden (Honda) took a
maiden win and is third in the championship, 15
points behind Stef Bester (VANS Racing Division
Yamaha), who claimed four second places during the
season and is now 39 points behind Twigge.
Despite Keenan Hammon (Yamaha) winning for the
VETS MX DES NATIONS FARLEIGH CASTLE 2016
A few months ago, we told you lot all
about the SA team heading across the
Pond to compete in the VMX event at
Farleigh Castle. Well – they went, they
saw they kicked some butt and are
back. Gareth Ireland was there…
He says:
Set on the hillside farm in the shadow
of the 14th century Farleigh Hungerford
castle this MX track was an icon of
World MX Grand Prix in the late 70’s and
80’s. The circuit is spread across the
rolling green hills and fields of the South
East English countryside and presents
an almost 100% natural motocross
wonderland to all that rode it. Folks
would come from far and wide either
to participate or spectate and it wasn’t
uncommon to see 40,000 fans line the
bunting rope watching their heroes battle
for MXGP glory.
Sometime in the mid 90’s, around the
time of the resurgence of super cross,
the venue sadly fell off the World MX GP
circuit and was designated to a couple
of local events and a few Wilshere pigs.
Over the last 10 – 15 years’ vintage
motocross (VMX) has become a popular
facet of dirt biking.
Call it a bunch of dirt bikers having
a mid-life crisis if you want but if cars
and road bikes can have a classic
and vintage scene then you can bet
ya we won’t be left out. The period of
the 70’s and 80’s is referred to as the
“Heydays of Motocross” and represents
a period of exponential development
in the machinery, unforgettable racing
characters and huge participation that
has never been seen again. With the
vintage scene growing there came a
need to celebrate the venues and riders
from the old days so 8 years ago, in
stepped Dave King and organised the
first Vets MX des Nations (VetsMXdN)
at the historic circuit. The ideal was to
put on an event at the old venue that
catered for Twin Shock, Pre 85 and Pre
90 Evolution bikes piloted by riders
divided into age group classes above 40.
The big draw card for the event was that
it would replicate the Moto-Cross des
Nations that was held at Farleigh back in
1980 and there would be past hero’s that
would headline the entry list.
The concept soon became a huge
success and year after year, a new set of
ex-pros headlined the event and the ones
from the previous year came back for
more fun. It wasn’t long until the entries
in the field were reminiscent of those that
grace the MX GPs back in the 80’s and
the Vets MXdN at Farleigh became the
pinnacle event on the international VMX
calendar.
SA supporters ready for action
For the last 10 years I have been involved with VMX here
in SA and restoring old dirt bikes, so naturally - this was my
Graceland but for some reason or another I hadn’t made it out
to Farleigh yet. Several other South African VMX riders had
participated over the years but this year was different. With the
quality of the field stepping up a notch fellow VMX enthusiast
Gavin Williams set a dream in motion to assemble a strong
group of riders from South Africa and contend for the Vets
MXdN Evo cup.
So with the help of GlobalASP, Motul and Silverline Tools,
Gavin assembled the formidable team of Grant Langston, Ryan
Hunt, Andre David and Tony Riddell to take on the world. The
team would have their bikes built here in South Africa and
supported by local guru Paul Symons - but no team is complete
without cheerleaders, so myself and fellow wannabees Adam,
Warren, Gerald and Ian decided that this was the year we need
to be there to support our boys.
So with flag, vuvuzela and a pair of welly boots packed we
headed out to the Wilshere countryside.
The first thing you notice driving into the entrance (well
besides a big castle) is the overwhelming number of camper
vans that fill the hillside and pits. There must be easy 10 rugby
fields worth of RV and campers each with the rider’s racing
weapon of mass destruction resting under the RV awning. This
event boosts over 500 entrants ranging from the average joe
“pie thrower” to the legendary GP superstar all parked next to
each other. Entries are sold out in less than 24 hours for this
race, so everyone is super amped to be here. Walking down the
pits can take you a while as every campsite has a different piece
of motocross bike history. The quality of the machines is just
staggering from factory Mugen Hondas, Red Rockets galore,
Hogan HL 500s to custom built twin shock four-strokers and for
a bike restorer, it is sheer heaven.
I could go on and on about the bikes but there were way too
many to mention so I hope the photos can explain.
Anyway - we were here to watch some racing and support the
boys, so it was off to the SA camp to see what was up. Parked
right in the thick of things the SA team had an impressive camp
with a full Kawasaki MXGP rig setup from Crandley Kawasaki.
The bikes were in place and in impeccable condition with each
bike and rider having his very own mechanic and workbench.
It’s was pretty clear that Team SA was here for serious business
and were the unknown entity amongst the field on typical MX
nations with star studded Belgium, British and US teams.
On a typical overcast English morning the riders got kitted up
and headed out on the practice to set a time that would give a
gate pick for the main. From the onset the clear pace setters
were the Belgians, Northern Irish, USA and Team GB with team
SA lurking in the shadows. As the crowds and clouds gathered,
the excitement mounted and to kick the weekend off was the
Under 50 Twin Shocks.
Most of the superstars save themselves for the Des Nations
races but some, like ex AMA pro Todd de Hoop race anything
and everything and he ran away with the first race of the day.
The races carried on through the morning ranging from Pre 83
125, Twin-Shocks, Pre 85s and Evos but they all led up to the
first of the two Des Nations races, the Twin-Shock dN.
Here there was some unfinished business from 2015 between
the Jan Geboers Suzuki Belgium team and the German team
on their immaculately built Twin-Shock Husky 510 four strokes.
The crowd had been waiting for this one and lined the 2,4 kms
of bunting that stretched between the white painted posts.
Heat one was dominated by the Germans but day two saw the
Belgians pull it back and head for an exciting finish.
John Dowd Dodging a very tired Italian.
In between heats the pits were
a buzz with small groups gathered
around each pit either checking out
the exquisite machinery or trying
to get an autograph or quick chat
with stars such as local favourite
Kurt Niccoll or one of the Americans
like Jeff Emig, John Dowd or Doug
Dubach. Still pulling the crowds’
attention were South Africa’s former
AMA and World GP champion Grant
Langston and ex British Champion
Ryan Hunt. Grant is based in the
US now and can still be seen
at the outdoor AMA races as a
commentator for NBC but he still has
plenty time for his fans.
Once when Ian and I were track
side with Grant some kids came up
to him with replica number boards of
his AMA win and he had all the time
in the world for the guys which was
cool to see.
Anyway the boys were here to do
a job and not before long it was time
for the first Evo des Nations race
and the burning question was “How
would Team SA fare against the
established teams of super stars?”
and if that task didn’t seem tough
enough, whilst everyone was on the
start line the heaven’s just opens
with something that resembled a
Highveld thundershower. Conditions
quickly became atrocious but racing
commenced in the muddy soup that
is British MX racing.
One would think that this would put
team SA at a clear disadvantage but
at the end of it all the riders finished
in the top 20 and after the first heat,
Team SA was lying in 4th out of 18
teams and was sandwiched between
Team US with Dowd, Emig, DeHoop
and Dubach in 3rd and Team GB with
Prince, Niccoll, Dobbs and Voase in
5th. Pretty illustrious company to be
wedged between I’d say.
After the downpour the track was in
quite a state so the organisers made
the decision to can racing for the day
in order to save the track for day two.
This left the SA supporters team in a
“bind” as we had bought tickets to go
support another SA boy Brad Binder
at Silverstone the next day. Ultimately
we all opted to stay at Farleigh and
support Team SA in their quest for a
podium position. With not much else
to do except talk rubbish in the rain
it was off to the pub for a few ciders
and an early dinner.
Kurt Niccoll on his way to winning the
Over 50 Evo class. Big crowd favourite.
Tony, Andre and Ryan after Heat 2.
Day 2 arrived and the sun was battling
the clouds for possession of the sky.
Neither won but that mean perfect riding
weather and a track that had been
somewhat recovered but was still very
“boggie” and wet. Very few opted for the
sighting lap and those that did probably
wished they hadn’t as their bikes got
caked in clay mud. As the weather started
to stabilise the crowds streamed in and
began to circle the track and the pits
became a buzz with activity. The “support
classes” got racing earlier than normal
and helped clean up the track for the two
premier classes of the day. Before we
knew it it was time for the battle of the
twins, Twin-Shocks that is, with Belgium
and Germany resuming the battle from
the day before. Only this time a certain
Jeff Emig thought he quite liked his Team
Husqvarna International Husky 510 and
got stuck amongst them to take second.
This, and the fact that the Germans had
some drama, meant that it was neck and
neck going into the last heat. The crowd
had come to see Emig and he didn’t
disappoint going hammer and things
with Suzuki Geboers Belgium’s Bengt
Laeremans with Germany in tow. In the
end the Belgium’s won the Twin-Shock
des Nations cup and had their revenge
from 2015.
The premier class of the weekend was
undoubtedly the Evo Des Nations cup as
it hosted all the stars and had become
the more completive of the two ds Nation
races. The hype in the Team SA pits was
palpable and everyone was so keen to
dethrone some of the usual suspects of
world motocross. As the machies took
the bikes to the pre-race paddock the
guys did their final preparations and
headed for the line. 3 points was all that
separated GB, SA and USA and we
couldn’t afford any mishaps or bad luck.
Both Ryan and Andre had a solid race
both finishing in the top twenty. Tony was
taken out on the line by another rider but
rode a gutsy race to get back to 32nd
place. Grant was lying 4th overall when
he collided with another ride and hurt his
thumb which ended his challenge for the
weekend. A little battered and bruised
Tony a few spots ahead of Jeff Emig.
team SA regroup and had laser sight
focus on the job on hand for the last heat
if they we’re going to mount a challenge
for the podium. In des Nations the first
3 across the line count and now that
we only had 3 riders it was vital that all
finished and all did well.
With Grant out this meant that Ryan
could assume Grant’s gate spot which
move him to gate 3 and the rest of the
team improved their starting positions.
Lined up and ready to go for the last
heat the sound of air horns and the
smell of two stroke filled the air. And…
away they go. Out of the first corner 3
out of the top 10 were the South Africa
lads, all of a sudden there was hope and
belief. Heading into the second corner
a rider from Italy gets it wrong and high
sides right in front of Tony and takes
him out but Ryan and Andre get away
in the top 10. Tony frantically gets up in
one movement and starts kicking the
mammoth CR500, it takes a while but the
beast fires to life and Tony is off riding
like a man possessed. Up front Ryan
has moved up to 3rd ahead of names
like Niccoll, Dubach, Dobbs and rides
a phenomenal race to limit the damage
and increased team SA’s chances. In
11th overall Andre David, who spent
many years racing in the UK, is riding
the wheels off his little YZ 250 against
mostly open class competition. Further
back Tony is riding his heart out and
recovers some 16 positions to finish 39th
overall. Belief it or not we still managed
to beat the star studded team of the USA
and finished 4th overall behind Belgium,
Northern Ireland and Great Britain which
was an incredible effort by the guys.
As the riders arrived back in the camp
there were great “gees” and sense of
achievement, even if you were just the
chief vuvuzela blower. Many a photo
was taken, back was patted and high 5s
were dished out. But the real race wasn’t
over…..who would be the last team left in
the pub. Surely this was our time to shine
an damn right we did just that along
with the Langston family. The absolutely
coolest moment of the weekend was
after all the racing was long over and the
SA supporters team, Tony, Grant and
his family were the last ones in the pub
teaching a certain John Dowd from team
USA how to blow a vuvuzela. Classic!
What an absolutely amazing weekend
of motocross! Well done to all involved
and we look forward to returning next
year to invade that podium.
Gareth Ireland
Team SA pulled off an amazing result finishing 4th in the Evo MXdN class and were battling with Team GB
and USA for the final podium spot. They had a bit of bad luck but still managed to beat a star studded
