Exciting happenings in the DESEO program
DESEO is our youth outreach program
that teaches values, morals and
personal health topics in nine public
schools near our headquarters town
of Santa Rosa de Copan. DESEO is
one of our many support ministries,
which collaborate with other local
institutions to introduce families to
our various congregations and church
planting efforts.
The Upward basketball leagues
and our after school tutoring
programs are also coordinated
through DESEO. The program will
also be expanded for the first time
for high school aged youth as another
effective way to engage those teens
with the church. We
just completed our
first basketball league
of the semester
at the Membreño
school, and the next
league will be the
San Antonio school.
Our DESEO team
visits in the homes
of the participants
of UpWard basketball encourage the
whole family to be more involved.
Using the above technique,
Dakota, one of our DESEO team
as well as an experienced AIM
(Adventures in Missions) worker
with MUR was able to visit with a
mother and the older sister of one
of the boys that he coached in the
Upward basketball. Dakota was
welcomed into the home, even
though the boy was not at home at
that time. That visit set the stage for
follow up visits with the family and
conversations that led to the mother
regularly attending one of the local
congregations in the community of
Belén. This is an example of how our
support ministries such as DESEO
and Upward basketball introduce
contacts into our core ministry of
evangelism, as well as planting and
growing congregations in the area.
This month MUR will be
introducing our DESEO School
Sponsorship program to the brigades
who have an ongoing relationship
with one of our local schools. This
sponsorship program needs families
from the USA who are willing to take
a direct and active role in mentoring
a specific school and assist MUR in
the work that we do there. There
will be more information coming to
you soon, but if you are interested in

Planting churches through CREO program
CREO is our church leadership and spiritual training
program that is taught in a series of intensive, weeklong
“bootcamps”. CREO is one of our core ministries
because of its work to fulfill our key performance
indicator and assist us in training local leaders who
will be directly involved as we work to launch 1010
churches in Western Honduras. We have already
completed four of our planned seven boot camps for the
year. In the most recent boot camp, Steve Cloer from
the Southside Church of Christ in Ft. Worth, Texas,
and Don McLaughlin from the North Atlanta Church
of Christ provided some advanced class materials for
one of our boot camps. These visiting teachers are so
helpful to improving the quality of the instruction as
well has adding a sense of pride to the attendees that
they have received lessons from such able instructors.
Thank you to Steve, Don, and the many others who have
collaborated with MUR in this way.
MUR also led an evangelistic campaign at the town
of Las Flores this month. Las Flores is a target area for
a future church plant. The campaign included worship
services every evening during the week. On Tuesday
evening, the congregation from Belen as well as
Contamal traveled together to worship with the people
of Las Flores, adding to the impact of the campaign.
MUR church planters as well as one of our first CREO
graduates presented lessons during the week. Join us
as we pray that Las Flores can be added to our John 1010
Generation goal of having 1010 congregations in this
region.
AIM targets great workers for Mission UpReach
Adventures in Missions (AIM) is a part of the Sunset
International Bible Institute in Lubbock, Texas. AIM is
an apprentice missions program for college-age young
people. MUR has enjoyed a collaborative relationship
with AIM for several years. In total, 17 AIMers have
served with us in Honduras, representing three AIM
class groups.
In March we said “adios” to five AIMers from
the first class, including: Adam Lord (from Liberty,
Missouri), Rex Wilson (from Lubbock, Texas),
Kristin Adams (from Arlington, Washington),
Jami-Leigh Fanning (from Lynchburg,
Tennessee) and Marianne Moses (Marble Falls,
Texas). The work in Western Honduras has
been blessed by the diligent efforts of these
young adults.
Two members of that first AIM class have
recently joined the staff of MUR in permanent
positions. Caleb Gossett accepted the position
of Assistant Group Coordinator. Caleb will focus
on organizing the more than a dozen brigades
that serve here each year to assure that
everything operates smoothly and efficiently.
Matthew Bridges accepted the position of
Accounting Technician, working with Cheryl
van den Meiracker, our senior accountant. Matt
is also leading the new deaf ministry within the
local community. We welcome Caleb and Matt
as permanent members of our team.
We offer a hearty “bienvenidos” to the three
members of the latest class of AIMers to join our ranks
in May. We are happy to have Landon Anderson (from
Missouri), Heidi Swenson (from Nebraska), and Jarley
Quintero (from Florida) joining us. and helping in our
various projects. Landon will be working with The
Moses Project, Heidi with DESEO, and Jarley with the
church planters. They will serve for 22 months.

Brigade highlights
Our Spring Brigade season has wrapped up and
had a huge impact in the region. We consider our
brigades as one of our “support ministries” –
that is, in addition to the service provided, these
brigades demonstrate Christ’s love to the people
living here and encourage the citizens to be more
receptive to our evangelistic efforts. During
the spring, seven different teams collaborated
with us in completing a variety of construction
projects, ministering to the sick in and around
Santa Rosa, and working with the DESEO staff
to deliver the good news of Christ to the school
students. This spring brigades gathered from the
Tusculum congregation near Nashville, the North
Atlanta congregation, Pine Tree church from
Longview, Texas, the Auburn Student Center, and
the Southside congregation in Ft. Worth. Many
lives were touched through these efforts. As an
example, about 2,000 people received medical and
health care from our brigades thus far this year.

In this newsletter, you have seen just some of the
ways Mission UpReach is working to meet the John
1010 Generation goal of planting 1010 congregations
in Western Honduras during this generation. We will
require many resources to accomplish this. We remind
you that MUR is a 501.c.3 nonprofit organization, and
as such your donation may qualify as a tax deduction.
Many USA companies provide matching gifts to MUR
for your donation (often they will not provide the
match for church donations, but can do that for nonprofits).
Please ask your human resource professional
about the possibility of these matching gifts. In addition,
if your company is involved in United Way, it is
possible to direct your donation to Mission UpReach.

A note from Donna
We are so excited to roll out the school sponsorship
program in order to sustain and grow our DESEO
ministry in 2016. The goal of this program is not only
to provide financial stability to this effective ministry,
but also to connect individuals from the US to children,
families, and communities to build lasting hope-filled
relationships. It may be hard for some to believe just
how much it would mean to a Honduran child to have a
personal connection with a N. American, but we know
from our many interactions with them over the years
that this impacts the children, as well as the adults in
a positive way. Just the thought that a family in the US
would care enough about their school to participate in
sponsoring the ongoing efforts of DESEO is encouraging.
It goes without saying that there are many benefits
to the sponsoring families, not the least of which is
the knowledge that one’s financial contribution may
change the course of a life, or many lives. We would
love to tell you
