Comment from
Kevin Holden
After the second half collapse against Cubo, we
went intolast week’s game looking to build on the
opening game’s first half performance.
We set up defending the slope playing 4-5-1. We
were tight, organised and, after 35 minutes, were
well in the game 0-0 and looking the stronger
side after Laleham’s early pressure.
To be honest there wasn’t a shot on target from
either team in the first 35 minutes and at that
point you wouldn’t bet against a goalless first
half.
A few yellow cards from a few scuffles was the
main talking point in
the game that far but
yet again the next 10
minutes were hard to
swallow.
From an innocuous
long ball down our right
and a run though our
defence, a carbon copy
of the Cubo game, and
we were a goal down to
Lalehamfrom absolutely
nothing.
We spoke about this
before the game but it
didn’t sink in because
just like the opening
game we conceded
another two goals in five
minutes to go in at halftime
0-3 down.
It was harsh to take
because I didn’t think
we played that badly.
The second half was
all about our pride and

we bossed it for the
most part, putting the
visitors under some
pressure but without
really testing the keeper,
but we never conceded
again and the game
ended 0-3.
Five minutes of
madness had again cost
us any chance of getting
something from the
game. When we learn to stop handing out gifts
the sooner we will pick up some points.
We actually didn’t play badly last week, which
makes the result even more annoying.
Man of the Match was EVO who was simply a
rock and never put a foot wrong all game.
Yateley kicked off and,
in a blustery wind from
the south, the match
was pretty scrappy and
bad-tempered for the
first 20 minutes, which
culminated in Hancock
and the Laleham No
7 booked, followed a
minute later by No 3
and Legg. The bookings
had a calming affect and
both sides played some
good football, with Ayres
heading wide.
On the half-hour mark
the Laleham 10 was away
on the left and struck an
unstoppable shot 0-1.
Connolly chipped for
Ayres to chase and the
keeper dropped the ball
before recovering.
The Laleham 10 was on
a breakaway again and
repeated his shot 0-2.
Connolly set up Ayres
to shoot and the keeper
palmed away from the
bottom righthand corner.
This end to end stuff ended with Laleham’s No 3
winning a corner on the right, the cross finding No
9’s head on the far post and the score was 0-3 to the
visitors.
The second half was evenly matched. Taylor crossed
for a Harris chance, blocked for a corner.
Laleham’s 11 shot was saved by Thomas five minutes
into the half. Stevens came off the bench to replace
Kuhl, Harris moving to right back to cover and Stevens
played up front. Conolly worked well with Ayres but
Laleham’s keeper out quickly to snuff out the chance.
Then Hancock shot over the bar. Connolly ‘s ankle
went and was replaced.
On 70 mins Laleham’s 10 had his “hat-trick” shot
saved by Thomas. Harris shot over the bar. Three
minutes from time Hancock’s shot was deflected by a
defender but the unsighted Ref Peter Ashdown, who
Ref’d well throughout, gave a goal kick.
Much better second half in this game and, other
than the abberation of those five minutes, the match
was evenly balanced and
Yateley could have eerned
a point.
