My month
in pictures
What a month - literally the best! Primarily because my kids
aren’t at school, so we get to holiday and go on lots of lovely
days out. We have taken full advantage of last month’s feature
‘A-Z of things to do with the kids’, and aim to have everything
ticked off before the month’s out! Wish my sanity and bank
balance luck, as kids’ days out are never cheap and I’m not one
for a warm sandwich...
On top of looking after the kids, it’s been all systems go at
Velvet HQ with Fashion Show planning. Over the last four
years, we have realised that you love the fashion, but also love
a great girls night out, so this year we are setting the bar even
higher and aim to have you dancing on your seats. Every year
The Soil Association are encouraging people to go organic
for September. Here are five reasons why you should try it:
1. Nutritional Benefits
Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that there was significant
nutritional differences in food that had been organically and non-organically farmed.
2. To Protect Wildlife
Organic farms have up to 50% more wildlife.
3. To Reduce Your Exposure To Pesticides
Over 320 pesticides can be used in non-organic farming and some of these can be
found in the food.
4. Higher Standards Of Animal Welfare
Organic animals are free range, meaning they can be happier and healthier.
5. It’s Better For The Planet
If all UK farmland converted to organic, it would be the equivalent of taking one million
cars off the road.
Food
Congee Bowls
The most instagramable food of
the moment, Congee Bowls are
an Asian dish made from a type
of rice porridge. Made with plenty
of water, it is known to be good
for the digestive system and other
organs, and is especially ideal
for the autumn months when
immune systems are down due to
cold and flu viruses. You can add
many ingredients to your Congee
including berries, veggies, meat
or fish. Wash 100g of sushi rice,
add to 500ml of chicken stock and bring to the boil. Cook at a gentle simmer for 25
minutes, you’ll want the rice to look soupy. Season and add the ingredients of your
choice – chicken and ginger are great for this time of year.
Greco-Fiano ‘Pipoli’ Bianco,
Basilicata
£10.99 - 2 for £20
From the wild southwest of Italy where wine
has been made for millennia, this is a fresh,
modern interpretation of ancient tradition.
The grapes come from low-yielding old vines
farmed at 800m altitude on arid volcanic
Mt Vulture. Bright, pure, intensely mineral/
aromatic/floral: the favourite white on our
wine bar lists. Seems insane that a wine of
such pedigree and charm costs no more than
a ‘posh’, wishy-washy Pinot Grigio.
(Cambridge branches only).
Huge Amarone-style red made from dried
grapes. Amarone is a renowned Italian red
wine royalty (and expensive - £25-£50) but
this cheeky number is ‘declassified’ as it’s not
all from the right zone/grape varieties. What
it lacks in formal classification it more than
makes up in punchy fruit and lush body. A
huge favourite of customers and wine journos
alike and an outrageous bargain.
Meerlust Red 2013 Stellenbosch
£12.99 – 2 for £20
The ‘baby’ wine of a leading Stellenbosch estate
(founded 1693) whose Grande Vin, Rubicon,
famed as one of South Africa’s top reds, retails
at £26. Mostly Cabernet, it’s a classic South
African interpretation of the Bordeaux formula
and quite a beast - big, tight-knit, glossy,
packed with currant fruit, green pepper (lots
of) and cedar. Impressive class at the price,
impossible not to like.
Food
New tastes,
flavours and
culinary
experiences
Following the appointment of highly acclaimed Executive Chef, Dan Grigg, at the
Chestnut Group, it wasn’t going to be long before he extended his expertise and
enthusiasm to the group’s well-established restaurant, The Rupert Brooke
Launched in time for summer, The Rupert Brooke in Grantchester
has developed a seasonal brasserie-style menu, showcasing
its staple favourites as well as lighter and healthier options and
vegetarian dishes. We were excited to try some of the delights on
the new menu that included everything from macaroni cheese, salt
beef croquette and stone bass to jelly ‘n’ ice cream.
We arrived at The Rupert Brooke on a
and butter
by, we knew
we were in for
a treat!”
glorious Monday afternoon and were
seated at a table opposite the pass -
perfect for us to catch the chefs in
action and to smell the glorious dishes
cooking. We were welcomed with fresh,
warm bread and homemade butter. If
the bread and butter alone was anything
to go by, we knew we were in for a
treat!
We ordered the foie gras parfait with
sour cherry, crispy chicken skin and
pain d’espice as well as the green pea soup with wasabi pea crumb
and pancetta crisp to start. The attention to detail in both dishes
was exquisite, and every bite we took just got better and better. The
colour of the soup was extraordinary, the flavour was delightful and
the crisp of the pancetta added a lovely texture to the creamy soup.
For the main course, we ordered the salt baked beetroot risotto.
The dish was cooked to perfection, with walnut and balsamic jelly
calming the flavour of the beetroot. When looking back at the
menu for dessert, I realised the risotto was gluten free. This was the
first time I’ve tried a gluten-free dish without realising it in the taste
- the sign of a great chef!
We also tasted the 10oz Dingly Dell pork chop with triple-cooked
chips, confit vine tomato, wild mushroom fricassee, parsley salsa
and horseradish hollandaise. The combination of the mushrooms,
tomato and pork was divine and a fantastic, classic dish cooked
excellently.
To finish lunch, we couldn’t resist ordering dessert. We were told by
General Manager, David Harrison, that the dark chocolate brownie
with roasted white chocolate was a firm favourite at the restaurant,
so we had to try it. We also opted for the jelly ‘n’ ice cream, excited
to find how the chefs would transform this classic dessert.
As expected, the jelly ‘n’ ice cream was a delightful dish. The
jelly was Prossecco-flavoured and was accompanied with fresh
strawberries, raspberries and small bites of shortbread. It was a
refreshing end to the meal, and one I’d definitely have again. The
brownie was also delicious.
The rich brownie combined with the chocolate sauce and roasted
chocolate pieces melted in the mouth. It has to be one of the best
desserts I’ve tried in a very long time.
The Chestnut Group is making waves across East Anglia.
With four (and growing) foodie destinations in its portfolio, it’s
bringing fantastic new tastes, flavours and experiences to our
region, and we can’t wait for its next venture, The Northgate, to
open in Bury St Edmunds.
Food
We hear about where the BWC girls have been eating this month
As autumn arrives, our main foodie excitement is coming from street-food heart throbs,
Steak and Honour. Their first restaurant is imminently opening on Wheeler Street, and we
just know it’s going to be the coolest hang-out in town. There’s going to be space to sit in,
but it will still be just as easy to swing by and grab your favourite burger to-go.
We hear there are a few exciting menu additions too. Keep your eyes on the blog to see
the juicy launch! After your burger binge, you might need a virtuous stint at recently
opened Co. Fifteen in Cherry Hinton. Taking over the Rhode Island space, this is our
new favourite brunch spot. From tacos to power balls, the menu is healthy, nutritious
and sustainable. We love its mission to be the first zero-waste
restaurant in Cambridge. More than just eating in though, it does
fresh fruit and veg and all the best regional produce and basics in
re-usable jars. We also have a real soft spot for the water tumblers
made from up-cycled wine bottles.
When you go, make sure to try the homemade honey lemonade,
and keep an eye out for fresh goodness on the counter from local
talents such as Allotment.
In fancier news, we were lucky to experience ‘A Taste of
Alimentum’, the Michelin-starred foodie haven’s seven-course
tasting menu. This would have been heaven enough without also
being child-free. They kindly made Alex a pescetarian version, and
it was divine - visit www.bonewhitechina.com to see and read all
about it (and then book immediately!). A mention also to them
for winning The Cambridge News Food and Drink Award for best
restaurant.
We’re also delighted to have teamed up with Ely Markets to
bring some foodie and non-foodie excitement in the run-up to
Christmas (dare we say it!). We don’t want to give too much away
yet, but you can expect something to celebrate Ely’s booming
vegan offering, and something else to bring a bit of frivolity to your
festive shopping! The farmers’ market, on the 2nd and 4th Saturday
of the month, is a must visit if you haven’t yet (plus, you get to eat
your bounty at the foot of the incredible Cathedral - bonus).
Eat Seasonably:
game on
We take a look at how some
local eateries are using duck on
their menus this month
Duck is an incredibly rich meat which is packed full of flavour. It also
has a surprisingly dense nutritional content... Did you know that, as
well as containing Vitamin B, zinc, selenium, potassium, magnesium
and iron, it’s also a fantastic source of protein?
Duck Breast, Crispy
Duck Leg Bonbons,
Polenta, Baby Carrots,
Broccoli Purée and Red
Wine Sauce
“We are huge fans of using duck here at
The Angel, because it’s so versatile and
complements a lot of other dishes and wines.
We tend to use it alongside seasonal vegetables,
or even fruit, and it always seems to sell very
well for us. We’re proud to use locally sourced
Gressingham Duck, which has always received
great feedback from our diners, and emphasises
our commitment to supporting local produce.”
Head Chef, Aaron Jackson tell us.
Cured Duck, Endive, Pear
“We cure our Gressingham Duck in
star anise, coriander seeds, salt and
orange zest. This hangs for five days
to develop flavour. The salty duck is
complemented beautifully by a sweet,
endive marmalade, gingerbread, fresh
pear and bitter leaves,” Sam Sturman,
“We change our menu seasonally,
and, at the moment, we’re using duck
because it works so well with the other
seasonal vegetables. Our top tip would
be to pan fry the duck, to crisp up the
skin, and then oven roast.
We think it’s best served pink with
a red wine jus. Our favourite is
Carignan, which is our wine of the
moment!” Craig Galvin-Scott, Head
Chef and Owner tells us.
Article by Josh Tait
Keep your eyes peeled for our line up of must-see films,
up-and-coming musicians and the next big thing...
Captain America: Civil War
Director: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
Stars: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson
Release Date: 5th Septmeber
The title of this latest Marvel Cinematic Studios release is a little
misleading. Although Cap is the headline character, in truth
this film focuses on the Avengers team, as divisions within their
ranks cause the star studded line up to turn against each other.
Captain America: Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony
Russo return, and their blend of shadowy intrigue and widescreen
action is a welcome contrast to the off the wall, blockbuster tone
of Joss Whedon’s Avengers flicks. Civil War may not be able to
boast a headline villain like Loki, but the chance to see Avengers
heavyweights like Iron Man and Black Widow going up against each
other more than makes up for it. And if that isn’t enough, Tom
Holland’s Spider-Man makes his show stopping MCU debut.
American Pastoral
Directors: Ewan McGregor
Stars: Jennifer Connelly, Dakota Fanning, Uzo Aduba
Release Date: November 2016
In a somewhat brave choice for his directorial debut, Ewan
McGregor tackles an adaptation of Philip Roth’s seminal 1997
novel. McGregor also stars as Swede Levov, a man tormented
by his daughter’s (Dakota Fanning) increasingly radical political
leanings. The novel is a vast deconstruction of the American Dream,
and McGregor’s adaptation will have to work hard to live up to its
decades-spanning plot.
Bastille:
Wild World
Bastille will release their
second LP, Wild World,
a 14 track album that
follows their multiplatinum
2013 debut,
Bad Blood. Lead single
Good Grief is soulful and
anthemic, but lacks a
little depth and the lyrics
never progress beyond
insipid. Frontman Dan
Smith has promised more
guitars on their second
release, but they are still
somewhat pushed to
the background, such
as on the synth-driven
The Currents. Bastille
remain a little middle of
the road, but they will
not be disappointed by
the inevitable Coldplay
comparisons, and fans
are likely to be similarly
pleased by an album full of
catchy anthems.
Roar with Laughter
84 Charing Cross Road
84 Charing Cross Road tells the true, bittersweet
but heart-warming story of a Transatlantic friendship
which develops between outspoken New York writer
Helene Hanff, (played by Hollywood and Broadway
legend, Stefanie Powers), and more restrained English
bookseller Frank Doel (played by celebrated British
TV and film actor Clive Francis), after Hanff places an
order by mail.
From 1949 until Doel’s death in 1969, Hanff and Doel
continue to correspond, humorously revealing the
contrast between life in post-war Britain, still affected by
rationing, and more affluent New York.
Enjoy a spectacular evening of comedy with three great exponents of stand
up, Mike Wilmot, Rob Beckett and Rich Wilson. Beckett, ‘Mouth of the
South’, now well-established, is also a familiar TV figure, who has appeared on
‘Live at the Apollo’, ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘8 out of 10 Cats’. Inspired by the
comedians he saw while working as a barman at a club in Greenwich, Wilson
gave comedy a go himself. He has since become a circuit regular, especially as
a compere, while Mike Wilmot has appeared at venues all around the world.
International guitar night with the Lulo
Reinhardt and Andre Krengel Quartet
Stunning guitarist Lulo is the great-nephew of the world famous
gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, who helped to create an entirely
new way of playing jazz in the 1930s and 1940s. Lulo, who began
playing guitar at the tender age of 5, has incorporated Latin
swing and flamenco into the jazz rhythms of his family’s musical
heritage, creating a unique mix of styles. One of Germany’s
leading guitarists, Andre Krengel is truly multi-cultural, combining
American rock styles with Spanish, Portuguese, Cuban and world
music. In 2005, he co-founded prize-winning band Sina Nossa
(“Our Destiny”), a Portuguese fado and world music fusion band.
The V Virgins
Gemma braves camping at V Festival with Unbeatable Hire
When my sister called and asked if I wanted to go to V Festival
this year, I jumped at the chance, as I have never been to a festival
where you camp before. Its one of those bucket list things that
needs to be ticked off! I love the outdoors but I’m not a camper
(as in tent) I like my home comforts and feel that a bed and a
toilet is not too much to ask. We looked at the V Festival glamping
options and the choice was very impressive, everything from quirky
brightly-coloured pods to gypsy caravans. The price however,
slightly less impressive. The cheapest glamping option was £1290
rising to a cool £8000 for the three days!
We didn’t really want to pay those prices on top of our ticket so
decided to buy a camping pitch for £100 and rent a motorhome
for £875. The motorhome we selected sleeps 6 and was rented
from a local company Unbeatable Hire who are based in Bourne.
We arrived at the Unbeatable Hire depo and before setting off to
Chelmsford were given a tour of our motorhome and advised on
how everything works. I quickly baggsied the double bed and my
sister and friend Martine got cozy in the bunks.
Unfortunately the weather really was not on our side, we arrived
to rain and left to rain. There were many times I looked smugly
out of our motorhome window at the people who had chosen to
pitch a tent! The convenience didn’t end there; we were protected
from the porta loos, communal showers and only ever a few feet
away from a cold drink or hot cup of tea. Oh and I can’t forget to
mention the constant power supply for our phones. Very important
considering the amount of selfies and drunken videos taken over
the course of the three days.
V Festival, we came, we saw and we conquered! Now time for
the detox.
Let’s Beat Cambridge
Congestion
Bold plans to tackle congestion in
the city have been developed by
the Greater Cambridge City Deal
- and now’s the time for you to
have your say
Daily gridlock affects journeys, business and our communities
and, with a 30% projected growth in population, it is only set to
get much worse. The City Deal’s plans will reduce general traffic
at peak times, free up road space and generate income for better
bus, cycle and walking journeys.
It will lead to improved air quality and enhanced public spaces,
maintaining the city as a great place for people to live, explore
and enjoy. The package of eight measures taken together promote
sustainable travel as a way to keep our city and local economy
moving - to bring even more jobs, homes and opportunities to
the area.
This wide-ranging plan is likely to affect you and the journeys you
make for work, school or leisure, which is why we’re asking for
your feedback on the proposal.
Your Views Count
The consultation runs until Monday 10 October. We encourage
everyone to let us know their views online, have their say at public
events and exhibitions throughout September and early October,
or by filling in a survey within a leaflet. Leaflets are available at
more than 330 community hubs, including local libraries.
The Proposal:
• Better bus services and expanded Park & Ride -
quicker, more reliable journeys and the opportunity for
new or extended services
• Better pedestrian and cycling infrastructure
• Improved public space and air quality
• Peak-time congestion control points
• Workplace Parking Levy
• On street parking controls
• Smart technology
• Travel planning
Workplace Parking Levy funds raised will be reinvested in
bus services and transport infrastructure to give people
more travel choices. This could mean extra bus routes,
more evening buses, additional Park & Ride options and
new cycle infrastructure across the area in order to make
sustainable travel the best way to get around.
Full details of the plans, exhibition dates
as well as frequently asked questions are
Independent Newmarket
From shopping to hotels, restaurants,
listed buildings and of course the
famous Newmarket Racecourses.
Newmarket is known as The Home
of Horseracing and this year they’re
celebrating an impressive 350 years
of British racing heritage. Not only
is the town home to a large expanse
of horseracing stakeholders, there
are also an abundance of other
independent businesses.
“Newmarket is a fabulous place to
visit. It is the accepted “Home of
Horseracing” in the UK and visitors
can watch the horses working on the
gallops prior to browsing around the
bustling town centre, stopping for
coffee or lunch in one of the many
cafes or restaurants. The new National
Horseracing Museum and Heritage
Centre opens this autumn which is
a multi-million pound development
featuring, not only the best sporting
art in the country, but will also give the
public a chance to get up close to live
racehorses and see displays on its new
four-acre site behind the High Street.
1. Powters
Powters famous Newmarket sausage was born in 1881 and today remains as a familyrun
business, now in their 5th generation. Alongside their wide variety of sausages, this
independent butchers also supply many other local and regional speciality foods and free
range meats. “There are many reasons why people still enjoy shopping at independent
retailers like Powters. For one thing, they appreciate the personal service and advice our
skilled butchers can give; whether it’s about which cuts are most suitable or how to cook
them. Not surprising when you consider that we have been butchers and sausage makers
in the town since the 1880’s!
Our position as makers of the original Newmarket Sausage, and the authenticity of our
unique product, is guaranteed by EU and UK Protected Food Name status. It is one of
only 70 such high quality traditional foods in the whole of the UK, of which only two are
sausages!” Grant Powter, Owner and Managing Director, tells us.
Wellington Street, Newmarket. Tel: 01638 662418. www.powters.co.uk
The ever improving retail offering
will hopefully mean that visitors will
make repeated visits to the town.
In addition, Newmarket now has
its own Newmarket BID (Business
Improvement District) which has
some very ambitious plans to improve
the town even further. 2016/17 is
certainly a very exciting time to
visit Newmarket,” Mark Edmonson,
Chief Executive at Edmondson Hall
Solicitors and Board Member at the
Weekend Winner!
Get set for foodie festivities at Newmarket Open Weekend
After adopting a new two-day format
last year, the 32Red Newmarket Open
Weekend is back, and set to be bigger and
better than ever!
A hit with locals and visitors alike, the Open
Weekend, taking place on the 17th and 18th
September, gives the public a chance to visit
various horseracing establishments, and get
a glimpse of how history is made. There is a
whole host of activities and entertainment
for all the family to enjoy throughout the
town, bringing the community together. The
event will raise vital funds for local charities,
Racing Welfare’s Newmarket Housing
Project and Newmarket Day Centre.
Throughout the whole weekend,
Newmarket Racecourses’ Rowley Mile will
be open from midday, offering afternoon
racing as well as an exciting Food and Drink
Festival that looks to celebrate some of the
best produce East Anglia has to offer.
The Food and Drink Festival will play host
to the ever-popular regional sausage
competition, where expert judges will try the
best sausages in the region all vying for the
top title!
Adding to this year’s festival will be a new
area, The G’s Fresh Demonstration Kitchen,
which will be a foodie haven, offering
cooking demonstrations by local, highly
accomplished chefs. There will be eight full
demonstrations throughout the weekend,
where some of the region’s top chefs will
share some of their tricks of the trade; an
element of the Food and Drink Festival that
any food lover cannot miss.
If you’re attending as a family, there will be a
number of fun activities for all ages including
racing personality show jumping and a
Newmarket vs Lambourn football match,
face painting, bouncy castle, garden games,
swing boats and a puppet show. Don’t forget
- children under 18 go free!
Seven Newmarket trainers, including
William Haggas, George Margarson,
Roger Varian and Gay Kelleway, will take
to the microphone again this year, giving
commentary on the seven race card on
Saturday. Each trainer will be hosting a Just
Giving page so that you can support your
favourite trainer for the local worthy causes!
Other activities throughout the weekend
include, on the Saturday, Warren Hill gallops
open to the public, so you can see some of
the best racehorses in the world training.
This day will also give the public a first-look
at the much anticipated National Heritage
Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art, a
tour and talk at Europe’s leading Bloodstock
Auctioneers, Tattersalls and guided tours of
the historic member’s club, the Jockey Club
Rooms as well as the National Stud. Other
attractions around the town include one
of the most sought after equine veterinary
practises, Newmarket Equine Hospital, as
well as one of the best centres of excellence
for racing industry training, the British
Racing School, and of course, training yards
opening their doors to the public.
Hello To
We love the chic new Poppy
mixed the traditional doctor’s
a very polished and elegant
disappointed with the amount
Fashion
Sarah Decent of Modish gives her top 4 trends that will be hitting shoe shops across the land
1. Toes. Toes are having a bit of what fashionistas like to term a "moment" - you'll
continue to see pointed toes this autumn on shoes and boots, but you'll also see a
sub-trend of squared off toes, particularly on biker boots.
2. Chelsea Boots. Yes we know, not exactly high fashion, but as always oh so useful, so
definitely worth a mention. This season they're a bit more grungy, with a platform and
or a bit of a heel rather than the ladylike version we saw so much of last year
3. Platforms. Elegant wedges have all but disappeared to be replaced by the resurgence
of the Platforms of all depths and sizes, from barely there to full-on 1970s in your face
(though as you can see there are still plenty of wedge platforms about too - phew!)
4. Pewter. This is the main trend you'll see everywhere! Hip Hip Hooray - pewter is
very much a Modish favourite! Mainly because it incorporates two
things we love more than anything - a bit of subtle shiny-shiny,
along with the chameleon-like ability to go with just about any
colour under the sun. What's not to love!
Weight and body shape issues are very common problems for
many people, but may well have resulted in you feeling as
“I struggled with my weight once I passed 40 but I tried
not to think about it. Then I had a health scare and found
myself in an anaesthetic room being weighed, and I didn’t
like what the scales showed me - I was mortified. I
decided there and then that I would not hit fifty feeling fat
and frumpy, I would lose the weight. I found Alevere the
easiest diet I have ever done, and I have tried them all,
from slimming groups to food replacement diets. I ate
regularly and I found all the food palatable so it was never
difficult for me. Now I have so much more energy and I
feel much more plausible in my job as a health visitor. I
have joined a gym and even I’ve started running. I buy lots
more clothes now, and I’m wearing styles I never wore
before, but I spend less on them than I used to... when I
was big I had to spend more to look good!"
Isabel
Marant
Prada
I promise not to beat around the bush... The fashion world’s
hippest and boldest fashion brands are shaking up the slick
fashion elite and recreating the style rules. We are all holding
our breath and spying with our fashion apps and girly chats to
unveil what will be landing on the shop floors - thus urging our
pre-fall shopping spree. Will we abdicate last winter’s luxurious
sportswear and our most coveted quilted jackets, in favour of
new textures, styles and colour waves? Or will the fashion police
grant us yet another year’s wear? Mercy please, the suspense is
dire… So let me reveal all.
Essentially, velvet will be hijacking texture, ranging from Isabel
Marant’s skirts to Céline trousers, playsuits as seen in Zara, and
more. Now try and picture this fabric opulence in the deepest
mustard tones and even deeper oxblood shades… Heaven so far,
hey? Well, this may just set the tone to then boastfully introduce
a powerful 80s revival, dripping in sleek vinyl, troublemaker
vibes and a ‘tongue in cheek’ punk revival. March straight to
your closets and dig out all the 80s one-sleeved disco wonder
dresses, any touch of glossy vinyl and any remotely delinquent
attire, and throw them straight into this mix. Part punk will be
your new jumping board this fall, diving you straight into Bowie
wide psychedelic heeled boots such as Saint Laurent’s, and
full leather, ripped tights as seen at Prada. Plus, various chains
and the oh so coveted studs, which clearly, we still haven’t had
enough of. Luxury comfort will by all means still be key to the
winter season... hurray, hurray, hurray! Please make sure your
sleeves stay extra long and for an extra fashion flair stick to ‘bell
sleeves’ all the way.
My tip of the month? Get rid of all your evening coats and stroke
your quilted jackets - especially your boyfriend’s super-sized
puffas that can take you from office to disco in just a bounce!
The military trend will be abounding in the jacket department,
where reefers are ever so popular, backed mostly by a navalinspired
theme. A few final ingredients to top next A/W’s
deliciously stylish collections will include a huge dose of colourful
leopard prints. Bring on the brocades, keep the ruffles and look
after your metallics until next spring.
My favourite fashion accessory so far? The genius extra wide
embellished guitar straps that bring the true rockstar out of all of
us fashion rebels. Thank you, Fendi, for the mind-blowing idea,
whilst I bow to all the other amazing fashion houses that have
followed suit... Louis Vuitton, in particular, with the neon colours
throughout their A/W bag collection.
Rounder frames soften angular, square face shapes.
A thinner frame works best, so look out for these when making
your choice.
Detailed upper portioned frames complement triangular face
shapes; try brow line or cat eye frames with a width slightly wider
than your jawline showcase a balanced look.
Rectangular frames help to sharpen the softer angles of a
rounder face shape, and you’re best to go for frames with bold,
angular lines.
Last but not least, oversized, bold frames work best on someone
with an oval face shape. Stand out further with colour and texture,
and create your own unique style.
Whether you require glasses all day, for driving, reading or sport, Scotts Eyecare can
An Instant Facial
This month, ESPA have launched a fantastic new 3-in-1 anti-ageing concentrate which
promises to not only combat short-term signs of ageing, but also targets more longerterm
effects. We spoke to Leanna Kew, Spa Manager at The Spa at Bedford Lodge
Hotel to see how she has been getting on with it prior to its launch...
“I’ve only been using this a few weeks or so but my skin already feels more hydrated.
It goes on like a smooth lightweight serum, but it also has the wonderful nourishing
benefits of a facial treatment oil. Recently I’d started to
notice some fine lines, especially around my nose and
mouth and already the lines look more
plump. My skin has much more of a
glow than normal which is an added
bonus and it helps me feel like I don’t
need as much make up which is
great! The natural fragrance of the
product is the same as ESPA’s Pro
Range which is a blend of orange,
bergamont, jasmine and neroli
essential oils meaning it works really
nicely with my Pro Cleanser and
Pro Moisturiser. The product
also contains white truffle
which boosts the skin’s elastin
production and hyaluronic acid
meaning skin is instantly lifted.
Overall, it’s a winner for me!”
Q: I have recently returned from
a long holiday in the sun and my
skin looks slightly dry and feels
sore. Is there a treatment you could
recommend to help?
A: I would recommend our Water Lily
Soothing Wrap from Pevonia. It provides
immediate relief from sun damage and
is suitable for those with sensitive skin. It
cools the skin, relieving any sun damage
with its lovely natural ingredients of water
current skincare products I use,
are not as hydrating. What skincare
products would you recommend?
A: Australian Bodycare is a range I
love. Perfect for the summer months,
it contains tea tree oil which is a natural
antiseptic, helping to cool, soothe, hydrate
and heal the skin. Great for sunburn and
a multitude of other skin ailments, it also
helps to strengthen skin, protecting it from
the outdoor environment.
Q: Is it important to have a
foundation containing SPF?
A: Absolutely! Wearing a foundation
that contains SPF is really important,
and this should be worn all year round,
especially during the summer months. We
forget that our faces are constantly being
exposed to the sun and it is important to
protect such delicate skin to avoid sun
damage including pigmentation, ageing
and sun spots. Using products such as
bareMinerals can help prevent this, as they
contain SPF.
Q: I’ve recently been sunburnt and my
skin is starting to peel; is it okay to
use a scrub to help remove the dead
skin?
A: Firstly, step away from the scrub. It is
important that you do not peel the skin off
as it is in a very fragile state, and although
you feel like you might be helping the
situation, you’re causing more damage. It is
important to let your skin heal. You can aid
recovery by using a rich moisturiser to help
soothe and protect your skin whilst it is
healing. One I would recommend is SBC’s
Aloe Vera Body Butter.
Platelet Rich Plasma Skin
Rejuvenation Therapy (PRP)
Vampire Facelift
‘Skin Rejuvenation using your own plasma’ PRP has been used
in many medical specialties over 30 years. These include
cardiac surgery, wounds care, sports medicine, neurosurgery,
general surgery, orthopaedics, dentistry and cosmetics. The
end result is an appearance that looks significantly younger or
quicker healing of wounds and scars. Platelet rich plasma
(PRP) is obtained from your blood; this contains platelets which
work in the body to repair damage by clogging up cuts and
tears. Platelets also have growth factors on the surface which
stimulate collagen production when injected into the skin
Skin Rejuvenation
PRP is injected into the skin to stimulate new collagen
production and to re-energise your cells into rejuvenating
themselves. It can be used as an anti-ageing treatment. It can
be combined with Derma- roller or mixed with Dermal fillers,
vitamins and anti-oxidants for a more superior result.
“It’s really expensive!”
It depends how you look at it. Yes,
semi-permanent eyebrows are more
expensive than a brow pencil and
wax, but semi-permanent eyebrows
last anywhere between 2 to 5 years.
Add up how many salon brow shapes
you would have in that time, and
compare the cost to the initial cost
of your semi-permanent brows, and
things start to look a little more rosy.
“It hurts!”
No, we use anaesthetics for the area
we work on, so pain is minimal.
“You’re left with
unsightly scabs for
weeks after treatment”
This does happen and the amount of
scabbing depends on the individual;
we have creams to prevent it, but if
any scabbing does occur, it normally
heals with one week.
“It fades quickly”
You can have your lip line, brows or
eyeliner on for 2 to 5 years. I would
say that is quite impressive. Just
imagine never having to re-apply
your lip liner or worry that your
eyeliner has smudged!
“It looks fake and
unnatural”
We don’t have a one size fits all
policy. When it comes to brows,
we look at your natural shape and
ascertain what look you wish to
achieve before the treatment. The
same goes for the lips or eyeliner;
many different looks are achievable.
The Little Beauty Box in Newmarket has become a mecca for the latest advancements and
3 Alternatives
to Coconut Oil
Whilst coconut oil is all we are
hearing about, we’ve rounded up a
few alternatives with some other
fantastic health benefits…
1. Alfa One 100%
Pure Rice Bran Oil, £2
Suffer with high cholesterol? Then
this one could be your answer.
Rice bran oil is high in phytosterols
which are known for improving
cholesterol levels. It’s got a light
and fairly neutral flavour and is
good for both roasting and frying.
2. Good Oil Hemp Oil, £6
It’s fresh and nutty flavour makes
it an excellent ingredient for
salad dressings or to roast with.
Just one tablespoon of the stuff
means you’ve pretty much hit
your recommended daily dose of
Omega 3 too!
3. Hillfarm Extra Virgin Cold
Pressed Rapeseed Oil, £4.25
Offering a more earthy and slightly
peppery taste, rapeseed oil is also
good for roasting as well as baking
and frying. It has half the amount
of saturated fat as normal olive oil
and is also a rich source of
Vitamin E.
All available from Waitrose.
Paula Ahlberg talks to us this month about back pain...
“You are only as young as
your spine is flexible”
At some time most of us are likely to
experience back pain at some level. Yoga,
Tai Chi, Qigong and Pilates slow down the
process of the body’s natural degeneration
by increasing muscle and tendon circulation,
as well as maintaining elasticity to the spine.
They also remove tension from our mind and
body, strengthen our muscles, reduce excess
weight, and correct our posture.
Yoga can be practised at any age and its
effects go way deeper than purely the
physical. It encourages mobility and freedom
to the joints and moves the spine in all
directions. Pilates Reformer provides a fine
tuned system of training with the chief
focus being on core strength and stability.
Ask any physical therapist about their
recommendations for preventing and avoiding
back pain and they all recommend keeping
mobile and building a stronger core. Look at
the athletes at the Olympics - most of them
practise some level of Yoga and Pilates for
strength and mobility.
stay motivated with
Liberté Fitness
We catch up with the team
at Liberté Fitness to discover
their top tips for keeping
motivated during the winter
months
We don’t like to mention it, but the cold winter mornings and long
dark evenings are soon to be upon us. For some people, this time
of year means cosy nights in front of a roaring fire, but for fitness
fanatics and those looking to keep in shape during the colder
months, it can be a difficult time for motivation. We spoke to the
guys from Liberté Fitness about how they keep motivated.
1. Challenge yourself
Finding a race, sports match or fitness competition to compete in
during the winter months or at the beginning of spring will help to
keep you motivated. At Liberté we often sign up as a team so we’re
even more accountable and have to stay focused.
2. Don’t let people down
One of the best ways to keep on track during the winter is finding
someone to exercise with. If you plan your exercise sessions with
friends, you can’t afford to let them down. At Liberté Fitness, we
always exercise in groups which makes it way more fun. In fact, it’s
often more fun than torture! Once you’ve signed up for a session,
you will not want to let your fellow Libertarians down!
3. Embrace the winter
You may dread the thought of working out in the cold and amongst
the elements, but you’re actually more likely to work harder in
the winter to battle the cold and complete the session as soon as
possible! If you’ve been stuck in an office all day, one of our classes
is the perfect way to get a bit of fresh air and ensure you get a good
night’s sleep.
4. Enjoy the reward
If you do brave the rain, the wind and even the snow, then you’ve
thoroughly deserved a treat! On a Saturday morning (post-training
of course!) we often enjoy a social brunch together. It’s a nice little
reward after working our hardest and really pushing ourselves to the
limit.
If you want to stay motivated and keep in shape this winter,
Health
Food For Thought
This month, Adam Prescott of Revolution Fitness Academy,
sheds some light on nutrition to find out where many of us are often going wrong
Obesity numbers and chronic illnesses are
higher than ever before, yet gym and diet
group subscriptions are at an all time high.
But why is our nations health on the down
if our movement levels are on the up?
Last month in Velvet I introduced
Revolution Fitness Academy and briefly
touched upon an argument that has been
simmering around in the background of
the health industry for years, 'how much
fat, protein and carbohydrate should we be
eating?’ The article pointed out that maybe
we have been looking in the wrong place
for sustained health.
So why are chronic illness and obesity
numbers on the up if we are all trying
to move more and eat well? What can
we actually do to start improving our
health? I believe it’s down to a mixture
of misinformation, culture, body
image pressure and then desperation.
Perspective is also key so bear with me as I
go back in time to explain more...
...In the 1960s a very influential scientist
by the name of Ancle Keys delivered his
‘Seven Countries’ study to the American
Heart Association and Government. It was
a very loosely executed study, with Keys
setting out to prove his, soon to be known,
'lipid hypothesis' explaining that 'saturated
fat raises cholesterol and increases your
risk of heart disease’. There were so many
holes in this study that didn’t come to
light until we hit the 1980s, but by then it
was too late as the theory was already in
the public eye. To be fair, it makes sense
that the fat in your food adds to the fat in
your body - it’s not something you would
disagree with if you had never looked into
it yourself.
This gave birth to the low fat era of our
civilisation. Food industries jumped right
on board, removing the fat out of foods.
The trouble with removing fat is that it
then tastes like cardboard, but don’t worry
as they had all sorts of cheap sugars to
throw in there as a replacement. Our
shelves became littered with the new
low fat ‘health’ products packed full of
taste bud tingling toxins. To add to that,
we saw the introduction of the original
Government promoted food plate
to help guide us on what to eat each
day, and within that food plate, was a
recommendation of 6-11 servings of rice,
pasta, bread and cereals per day and 2-3
servings of dairy and margarine were given
the ‘a-ok'. Wow!
No wonder we all started piling the pounds
on with sugar in everything that’s a ‘health
food’ (not that I would class these items
as food).
“Focus on
running around
with your loved
ones, waking
up feeling fresh
and enjoying
your health”
Anyway,
I’m almost
getting to
my point...
Whilst all
this was in
progress,
we also
witnessed
the rise of
Jane Fonda
and lycra, whilst seeing gym memberships
rocket. Why would this be of importance?
As much as you would think it’s great to
see people becoming more active (which
it is), what it was also doing was gradually
pushing a certain body image onto the
public, particularly for women. When you
push specific body images onto people
who are eating in a way that piles on the
pounds you get confusion, insecurity,
self-doubt and low confidence… sound
familiar? Add to that the side effects of
being overweight: fatigued, demotivation
and signs of metabolic syndrome.
That was a very brief overview, I haven’t
even gone into modern diet issues and
schemes, but it leads to the same issues.
We have generations of people who believe
they are eating the right food to lose
weight, on top of the increasing pressures
of having to look a certain way. This leads
to the final piece of the puzzle; feeling lost
and sometimes desperate.
As the efforts to lose weight increase, the
pounds, either infuriatingly continue to
rise, or drop down to then soar straight
back up again. We feel increasingly
confused and strive to regain some form
of body confidence. This causes one of
the biggest self-sabotaging issues I come
across everyday in my career. Everybody's
focus is on the big ‘R’ - no, not Revolution
Fitness - Results. With the ever-lowering
confidence and misguided advertisement
from the fitness industry, many people
are utterly focussed on the speed in which
they can achieve ‘results’. When the results
come a little slower, not at all, or we meet
a bump in the road that causes us to feel
like we have failed and are back to ‘square
one’, it becomes a downward spiral.
Sound familiar? We need to reprogram
ourselves. At Revolution Fitness Academy,
we focus on health and we invite you to
do the same. When focusing on health
where you are guaranteed to see results
at some point (as long as the information
on your nutrition is correct - something I’ll
be talking about next month!). Focus on
preventing diabetes, heart attack, strokes,
Alzheimer's. Focus on running around with
your loved ones, waking up feeling fresh
and enjoying your health. So what if you
only lose two pounds a month and don’t
look like 'Mr or Mrs World’, because in a
year’s time you’ll be 24 pounds down and
it will have been effortless. Not to mention
the boost in your energy levels and
confidence. After years of misinformation
of biblical proportion, combined with
social pressure and cultural development,
I find more and more people feeling lost,
frustrated and with no self confidence. It
needs to change now.
Next month, I’ll go into more depth about
what we can do to improve our health and
what we can do to feel great.
Here’s what I want
you to do until next
month’s issue:
Throw out the scales that are
probably lurking around your
bathroom.
Any negative thoughts you have
about yourself, I want you to turn
into a positive e.g. “I love my body
because it gave me my beautiful
children.”
Exercise can be hard but enjoy
moving your body and think of the
challenge you’re setting yourself.
Compliment two people everyday.
Challenge yourself to make a new
home-cooked dish at least once or
twice a week.
I am training to be a Nutritional Therapist at the moment, so I am finding that my knowledge
and love for nutrition is growing weekly. I tend to stick to the following rules for myself and
my clients:
• I drink at least two litres of water every day.
• If my clients have any sugar cravings I recommend having a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
with water in the morning and before meals. This really does work and can also help if people
have reflux.
• I try to eat as much oily fish as possible and also take fish oil supplements. The benefits are
huge to everybody.
• I cook everything myself and use coconut oil for cooking with, as well as a body moisturiser!
• I make a plan for the week so that I know where I am and who I’m cooking for.
• I buy all of my meat and veg from my local farm shop.
With the nights starting to draw in, now is
the perfect time to talk about lighting in your
home. Lighting is a key design element of
any home, and similarly to fashion, lighting
trends are continually changing. Lights
create a cosy atmosphere during the cooler
autumn evenings, so it is important that you
have the best quality in your home, as well as
being on trend.
Pendant lighting is a big trend for this
season; forget the old fitted lighting, we are
talking about new quirky lighting options.
Coming in all shapes and sizes, pendant
lighting adds a great feature, especially in the
kitchen. Pendant lighting provides glamour
and interest to the plainest of rooms. From a
If you are looking for a change
in your interior this autumn, why
not try changing your flooring and
incorporate a little colour. Grey,
for example, gives the perfect
less-is-more aesthetic to your
home. People have gone wild for
it on Pinterest and it is not hard
to see why. Grey is a wise choice
as it complements every other
colour. If you have a dark and small
room, a light grey floor can help to
make the space feel light and airy
or adding a rug can give a warmer
feel.
Getting to know:
Colefax and Fowler
We talk to interior designer, Niall Keogh, about future
trends, top tips and where he finds his inspiration
How did you get into interior design?
After graduating, I was lucky enough to
secure my first job with Wilman Interiors
design studio. I worked on developing new
textile and wallcovering collections aimed
at the domestic and contract markets.
This is what really started my passion for
interior design.
What current interior trends have
been big so far this year?
There has been a big push on metallic
prints and effects, especially in
wallcoverings. Most suppliers have also
launched a lot of geometric patterns and
these have been used as a basis from which
to create a contemporary interior scheme.
What do you predict is going to be
prominent this autumn/winter?
I think birds will still be big for autumn/
winter, continuing through to spring next
year. Paisley is also on the horizon again.
Aside from seasonal trends, what
rules or styles do you follow?
I always work with the client in mind, as
not everyone is trend driven. Most clients
want a comfortable room to either relax in
or entertain, so I produce schemes which
cater to their likes and try to introduce a
few ideas that bring something new to the
finished room.
Who is your favourite designer
and why?
I think Kelly Hoppen is very clever.
I really like the way she uses colour,
giving even the simplest scheme a
very elegant and sophisticated look.
Kelly Hoppen Couture
What is your favourite
homeware brand?
Homesense are one of the leading retailers you really want to keep, as these are
I use to find new and interesting pieces usually the most costly items to replace.
when finishing a scheme.
Know your style as this will eventually
Where do you get your inspiration influence how you want the finished room
to look and the atmosphere you want to
Inspiration can come from anywhere as create.
I always keep an eye open when visiting What has been your most interesting
Serious Savings
See some of our top picks from Bury St Edmunds’ furniture outlet, Direct Furniture
Interiors
What better way to appreciate the serious savings Direct Furniture have
to offer than by designing an entire room out of their pieces. If you weren’t
already aware, most of their stock is in fact current season from wellknown
brands such as Loaf, Swoon, John Lewis and West Elm, and has
only been discounted due to it being ex-display, or perhaps because the
packaging was slightly damaged in transit. There are of course a few other
reasons that their quality pieces have landed in their warehouse, but nine
times out of 10, you really have just bagged a bargain! We have gathered a
few key pieces which would work well for a neutral base in your lounge... a
muted scheme like this enables you to add any colour of your choice.
FIFTY YEARS OF FINE SILKS
2016 marks an exciting year for Humphries Weaving in Sudbury as its director, Richard Humphries MBE, celebrates
5 decades in textiles and takes office as the Upper Bailiff of the Worshipful Company of Weavers.
Richard J Humphries was first employed as a design apprentice at Warner & Sons Ltd, Braintree in 1966. It was to
be a life-long career path of textile design and a passion to create the most complex and luxurious fabrics possible.
Richard purchased what machinery he could and set up his own weaving operation at Ashburton Lodge, Sudbury;
the same space that the company trades out of today. Work built steadily and Humphries Weaving reputation grew.
National Trust and Royal commissions soon followed with fabric being woven for the Queen’s Gold State Carriage and
the Green State Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
Today Humphries Weaving continues as a leading British manufacturer of custom Jacquard fabrics as Richard
prepares to become the 2016 Upper Bailiff of the Worshipful Company of Weavers, London’s oldest livery established
in 1130. Today the team has a comprehensive knowledge of fabric manufacture, having created sumptuous modern
and heritage work that embodies excellent craftsmanship. Working with the deepest respect for its ancient trade,
Humphries Weaving combines historical knowledge with innovative weaving techniques of today to produce
impeccable fabrics for Royal Palaces, historic properties and luxury private homes.
On Trend
Pinterest:
style me pretty
Pinterest: perfect wedding guide
From colour schemes to the catering, the cake
and the bridal party’s make up, we’ve rounded
up some of this year’s top wedding trends...
Colour Obsessions
When it comes to fixing a colour scheme,
there’s so much choice. Earlier this year,
Pantone announced that Rose Quartz and
Serenity are the colours of the year. Soft
pastels, rose and metallic tones are some
of the biggest colours trending. Metallic
palettes such as silver, rose, and gold add
a hint of glitz to your wedding, whether to
the venue, the dress, the cake or perhaps
throughout! From gold sequined bridesmaid
dresses to sparkly dusted cakes, rose gold
is a surprisingly versatile colour. Calming
colours such as dusty pastels and romantic
Victorian colour palettes are also popular at
the moment, as they offer an elegant and
inviting feel to any aspect of your wedding.
Quirky Cuisine
A more laid back approach to your wedding
breakfast is becoming increasingly more
popular. From food trucks to sweet treat
stalls the formal dining approach appears to
be slowly dwindling in popularity. If you are
opting for a sit down dinner your menu will
take a more relaxed approach as dishes such
as pie and mash and fish and chips will take
centre stage.
Cake Crazes
Whilst the wedding cake is still a focal
element for many weddings, we’re certainly
seeing people moving away from the
classic tiered fruit cake! From macaroon
towers to individual cupcake stacks,
there’s now so much choice. Whilst edible
handmade flowers will forever be timeless,
we’ve recently seen real flowers used as
decoration. Naked cakes are also key this
year. Forget the delicately iced cake and
make way for the unfrosted, exposed edges
of a naked cake. Not only does a naked
cake give a rustic feel to your wedding and
expose its delicious filling and flavour, it’s
also supposed
to look ‘undone’,
meaning you
could even save
a few pennies and rustle
one up yourself! Whip up
a sponge, fill with fresh
cream and fruit, decorate
with fresh flowers and
dust with icing
sugar... Voilà! If the
handmade look isn’t
in keeping with your
overall look, keep
with the metallic
theme and add a
touch of glitz to your
cake.
Bridal Beauty
‘The bigger the
better’ has been the
motto when it comes
to our brows for quite
some time now, and it
doesn’t look like that
will be changing anytime soon. Keep your
brows looking naturally full and be sure to
keep the colour in line with that of your hair.
When it comes to the overall look, think
neutral, warm and natural-looking. Keep
your skin looking dewy with a subtle
highlighter and generous dusting of
bronzer. For eyeshadow shades, think
warm gold and brown hues, and perhaps
step away from the black liner.
Lash extensions are often a good
investment and far more practical than
strip lashes. Lips should also be a focal
point. Again, think natural and opt for
a dark, nude lip. When it comes to your
hair, the undone look is again the way to
go. Think boho loose waves, ruffled curls
and effortless braids.
Weddings
Following their opening in May, Harriet tells us about her journey so far
After just four months, Harriet, 27 and from Clare, has successfully established her bridal
boutique in Bury St Edmunds’ Hatter Street, and we were keen to find out a little more
about her experience to date, the designers she stocks and where she finds her inspiration.
So, why the name?
I get asked this a lot! I had a very clear
vision of the name and logo for months,
even years, before I opened the shop. My
grandparents, Betty and Dennis Snow,
were married for 62 years, so Snow
seemed so apt for me - full of love and with
connotations of white and magic.
Why Bury St Edmunds?
I am originally from the Midlands, but I met
my other half here, after he took me to the
Abbey Gardens for one of our first dates! I
instantly fell in love with Bury, and as silly as
it sounds, it just felt right. After a few years,
I felt it was the perfect place to open my
own shop.
You have a First Class degree from
London College of Fashion, what
made you go into bridal?
I always wanted to go into the bridal
industry. I made my first bridal gown when
I was 16 in textiles class for my GCSEs.
The teacher thought I was crazy doing
something so complex but that’s what
I wanted to make, so I did it. I did four
years at London College of Fashion on
Costume for Performance. I then worked
in the costume industry for a few years
where I worked in television and theatre. I
moved to Orlando, Florida and worked in
a children’s theatre and then for the Royal
Shakespeare. When I returned from the
USA, four years ago I decided it was time
to think about transferring into the bridal
industry and here I am!
Are you married yourself?
No I’m not married yet. I think my other
half is too scared to ask as I will obviously
want (well, need!) at least five bridal gowns.
Where do you get your inspiration
from?
Bridal shows are all year round. I go
to Barcelona twice a year to buy from
Pronovias in January and May. It is always
a little strange having just started the new
year and in the second week of January we
are off to Barcelona to buy dresses for the
following year! We then have The London
Bridal Show in March, White Gallery in May
and Harrogate Bridal Show in September.
Which designers do you stock and
why have you chosen them?
I am very passionate about the designers
we stock. I don’t stock anything that I don’t
love myself, I think that’s really important.
I currently stock Jenny Packham, Suzanne
Neville, Pronovias, Justin Alexander and
Watters Wtoo. I try to choose designers
that complement each other and offer
something different. We don’t have a huge
amount of dresses (quality over quantity!)
which also means the bride doesn’t become
overwhelmed by the amount of dresses. I
spend hours making sure each dress brings
something different to the collection,
whether that is style, fabric, fit, feel or even
the price.
What is your personal favourite style?
I honestly love them all, and as I mentioned,
I don’t stock anything unless I love it
personally. I really love the unusual pieces
- whether that is a different lace or a 1920s
cut beaded Jenny Packham dress. We
have a dress that has just arrived from the
Pronovias 2017 collection which is a full
skirt in a Plumeti tulle, which means it’s
covered in polkadots. The fabric makes it so
unusual - I love it.
What do you think makes you stand
out as a bridal boutique?
When fitting out the shop, I was very
particular about the look, as I wanted a
stylish but quirky feel, that screams luxury
with the added bonus of a prosecco bar for
brides to enjoy whilst finding their dream
dress. I try to make the shopping experience
as special and memorable as possible as it is
going to be a once in a lifetime experience
for them!
What is your best tip for when a new
bride comes to see you?
I always want to get to know the bride so
I ask the basics; the wedding date, the
venue, the overall feel of their wedding day.
I then want to get to know them and their
partner; I always ask how they met and
about the proposal. I think getting to know
the character of the bride helps me suggest
dresses. My best tip is keep your shopping
crew small! Only bring the people whose
opinions you trust most. The bigger the
group, the more opinions and therefore the
more confusing it gets!
What styles suit what shapes? Is this a
myth?
Of course there is some truth in this, but
I don’t believe you should stick to this.
Always try a wildcard, something that you
would never have imagined. In the words of
Vera Wang – “Just go in and try things on…
things you may even think I would never
wear that.
Give yourself the freedom.” I think it is
more about trying the different shapes and
finding what suits you. A fishtail may look
great on your figure but if that’s not your
character then it isn’t you?
How early on should a bride sort her
dress?
A year is perfect. On average dresses
take around 5-6 months to be made and
delivered and then we usually say to allow
around 3 months for alterations as we offer
an in-house alteration service. You don’t
have to worry about where you are going to
store it and on top of that you don’t have to
worry about where to take it for alterations,
it takes all the stress away. Our first House
of Snow bride to get married, tied the knot
in August and she bought her dress 5 weeks
prior to the wedding. On the other hand we
have brides that have their dress ordered 2
years prior to the wedding, I think it is down
to the individual and what is right for you.
Dress To
impress
We meet Rebecca Lamb
to hear all about her big
day and her dress from
Honeys Bridal
Tell us about your engagement...
Nathan took me to Disneyland Paris for
Christmas in 2014 and he proposed to
me after watching the magical firework
display over the castle. We were walking
back and came to the giant Christmas tree
where I wanted a photo and that’s when he
proposed! It was amazing!
When did you start your wedding
preparations?
I started wedding preparations in January
2015 by going along to a few wedding
shows. I went to the Newmarket Wedding
Show where I met Michelle from Honeys
Bridal. Michelle had the most gorgeous
dress on display and that was it for me - I
was sold. Honeys Bridal were the only store
nearby that stocked Lillian West dresses, so
I booked an appointment in an instant.
Weddings
How long did it take you to find your dress? Did you try many on?
Before I went to Honeys Bridal, I did go to another bridal boutique where I tried on nine
dresses and thought I’d found ‘the one.’ Despite this, I still went to my appointment at
Honeys Bridal. I tried the dress on that I had initially fallen in love with, but it actually looked
awful on me! I couldn’t believe it! To begin with I thought I didn’t want a strapless dress but
Michelle urged me to try one on. I loved it! Once Michelle put the veil on me too, my Mum
was in tears and so was I! I went back 7 months later for a final fitting and I loved it even
more. I ended up going in on another 3 occasions and Michelle made me feel like I’d known
her years. She was so helpful and really knew what I wanted.
Tell us a little more about the big day...
We got married on Sunday 5th June 2016 at Brasted’s, Manor Farm Barns in Framingham
Pigot and I cannot fault the venue or the staff. The day was completely perfect.
What was the most exciting part for you?
The most magical part of my wedding? To be honest I couldn’t pick a favourite! My Disney
proposal at Christmas was my dream proposal so that of course was amazing. I got to go
dress shopping with my Mum and found the dream dress thanks to Michelle. The wedding
day itself was so much more than I had ever imagined. It truly was perfect. I loved coming
down the stairs in my dress to see my Mum, Dad and bridesmaids waiting. My Dad
traditionally brought my dress for me, so I was so excited for him to see it.
What would be your top tip for brides when picking their dress?
My best piece of advice would be to open your mind. If you’ve got a particular dress in mind
make sure you still try on lots of other styles! I am so glad I listened to Michelle - she really
knew what she was talking about and I can’t thank her enough for how lovely she was to me
throughout the whole lead up to my big day.
Available from Lara B
Refresh
and renew
Velvet takes a look at the
refreshing new interior
and in-house Couture
range at premium bridal
boutique, Lara B
Lara B’s bridal boutique, located in
Newmarket's town centre, has recently
celebrated 11 years in business and is still
striving for the same standard of excellence
as when it first opened. It's been offering a
luxury service to hundreds of brides, and
has really fine-tuned its knowledge. “Our
brides get nothing but the best service
from my honest and knowledgeable staff.
We operate on a 1-to-1 appointment basis,
so you will always have full reign of the
whole boutique during the appointment.
We offer expert advice with each of our
appointments, and most of all, we are
passionate and down to earth about the
industry,” Lara told us.
This year the boutique welcomed a huge
refurbishment in a bid to renew its look. The
beautiful Victorian facade has been newly
painted and the interior of the boutique
completely revamped. It’s kept its luxurious
charm and intimate feel, but with a touch
of added colour. The new wooden floor and
accent circular rug are just some of the
refreshing new statements in store.
Not only has owner, Lara, been busy
painting, she has also managed to launch
her new in-house range - Lara B Couture.
Launched last summer, this range has
really taken off. “The range offers separate
options to try on and mix and match in
order to find the perfect dress. All the
dresses are made here in the UK, making
them extra special,” Lara tells us. “If you’re
a bride who loves the top of one gown but
the bottom of another, then this range
is definitely for you. It’s a very exclusive
service and really enables our brides to
get the exact dress they’re after,” she
continues.
“Our brides get
nothing but the
best service
from my staff”
Weddings
With prices
starting from
£1,400 -
£1,850, this
range is very
affordable.
Lara B’s first
shoot was carried out in the spring and
photographed by the talented Scott-Wood
Photography. “The Garden Barn in Little
Bradley gave the perfect backdrop for
this classic, country range and it worked
delightfully,” Lara tells us.
Besides her recent refurbishment and the
launch of her new couture range, Lara is
looking forward to the forthcoming season.
“Bridal is making a slow move in trends and
styling. Boho is the new vintage, and brings
softer laces and flowing fabrics. The trend
is towards romance and a more relaxed feel
in general. Lace is still strong but there’s
less of it. Plains are becoming increasingly
more popular for those wanting to steer
clear of the lace gowns. The fuller gowns are
making a comeback too, so watch out for
some ‘wow-factor’ dresses. Our price range
varies considerably, and, with a continuous
sale rail, we can cater for most budgets and
needs,” Lara concludes.
Cream of Royston
Be Our Guest
We speak to Sue Ross, owner of Cream of Royston, the occasion wear specialists,
who offers her advice on the season ahead
Cream of Royston has been solidly trading in Royston for over
40 years. Sue has really learnt what works well for them in their
Royston store. “We initially started selling mainly casualwear but,
as the demand for formal occasionwear increased, we had to be
reactive to what the customers were wanting.” Sue told us. There
have been many changes but today they stand as a predominantly
special occasion store.
Sue’s success can be pinpointed to a number of different things
such as their extensive amount of stock and exceptional customer
service. “We are able to offer our customers a full shopping
“We’re able to
offer customers
a full shopping
experience
where they can
come to us and
be kitted out
head to toe”
experience where they can come
to us and be kitted out from head
to toe. We offer everything from
clothing (sizes 8-24) to shoes and
bags, hats, fascinators and lingerie.
I think that”s really important and
is just one of the reasons we have
customers travel to come to us,”
Sue explains. Some customers travel
from over a 50-mile radius and have
even flown in from abroad.
Not only do they offer an
exceptional range of occasionwear
from brands such as Condici, John Charles, Ispirato and Ann
Balon, they also have less formal collections from Michaela
Louisa, Gerry Weber, Frank Lyman and Gina Bacconi which
are more suited for a day at the races, guest at a wedding or a
wedding abroad or family christening.
Mothers usually purchase their outfits four to six months before
the event and customers are given the option to change it if they
see something they prefer later, but they very rarely do. Once
everything gels and you have that ‘wow factor’ you have found the
outfit. It is usual for Mothers to co-ordinate with the wedding
party. Many brides have a colour scheme for bridesmaids and
men’s suits and we work around this either to blend or contrast.
Winter weddings vary according to whether it is church or civil.
Dresses and coats with a sleeved dress underneath are popular
for church weddings. For a civil wedding it is usually a dress and
jacket with fascinator. New season collections are always exciting.
“2017 is quite pastel. There will be a lot of lemon, pale pink and
pale blue in plains and prints. When it comes to more timeless
colours, navy and cream will always be popular. Lace is still
standing strong and I am currently looking for some new brands
for the store so watch this space!” Sue tells us. 2017 collections
arrive in store from November 2016. So by the end of December
most ranges are in store.
Whilst the outfit itself must be chosen to flatter, enhance and
suit the occasion, Sue also stresses the importance of what’s
underneath. “We have a well stocked lingerie department with
brands such as Fantasie, Lepel, Charnos, After Eden, Royce and
Triumph. The correct underwear can alter the whole look of a
garment.” Sue tells us.
Shoes and bags are made in different heel heights in Spain in
beautiful leathers and Rainbow Club can be dyed to match the
outfit. As if this wasn’t enough, Sue and her team offer a free
alteration service on all full-priced outfits bought in store, a fitting
being carried out one month before the event, thus ensuring a
perfect fit.
Feel free to pop in, or alternatively, if you are after a more
personal service, why not book an appointment.
Condici
Weddings
Mariam Poorsalehi is the brand’s Head of Design and her
creations often include high end silks, ruching and georgette
fabric, together with a mix of pastel or bright colours that are
always on trend for the season. Throughout the collection
there’s beautiful use of detailing from a sprinkling of beads,
lace and laser cuts with styles that are ultra-flattering. Coordination
is taken care of at Condici with matching jackets,
boleros and hats available.
Ispirato
You can clearly see that inspiration and influence ranges
from a passion for vintage clothing and the haute couture
techniques from the international catwalks. This trend-led
collection will make sure that you have a coordinated and
fashionable look for the special occasion with matching
fascinators on-hand to complete the outfit.
John Charles
John Charles is a luxury design house that has been based in
London for over 50 years. John Charles looks to the needs of
the modern woman. Intricate detailing and comfort combine
to create the perfect formula for occasion dressing, day
to night. John Charles has earnt a reputation for not just
striking designs, but for the brand’s signature fit, perfectly
accentuating the natural female figure.
Your Ultimate
beauty countdown
Amy, from Envy Beauty, tells us
what you should be doing in
preparation for your big day
6 Weeks To Go
I would highly recommend a course of six MONU skin peel facials;
one a week for six weeks, increasing intensity as you go. It’s a
natural acid peel that regenerates your skin, creates a youthful glow,
banishes any fine lines and also reduces pores. I would ensure the
last facial was one week before the big day. I would also recommend
using SPF daily.
1 Month To Go
I would suggest using MONU’s Enriched Body Cream daily and
drinking plenty of water. I would say at least two litres a day to
ensure your skin is glowing.
2 Weeks To Go
At this point, I would recommend a full body scrub. I would then
repeat this a week before too. You can either have a treatment in
the salon, or use MONU’s Body Buffer in the shower at home. It’s
great for removing any dead skin cells on the surface and revealing
a smoother complexion all over.
Last 24 Hours
I would suggest having Gelish nails for a high shine, long-lasting
finish. Most people opt for a classic French, pretty pink, or elegant
nude. They last over two weeks, making them perfect for your
honeymoon after the wedding. I’d also suggest a pedicure to keep
your toes looking fresh. Orly’s Argan Oil Cuticle Drops help to
keep your cuticles nourished and promotes the
longevity of your gel nails.
Body Cream
Primer SPF15
Orly Argan Oil
Cuticle Drops
1 Week To Go
I’d recommend having a HD Brow Treatment. This is by far my
most popular treatment. Brows can completely transform your
face shape, so keeping them tidy is a must. This bespoke treatment
ensures each of my clients get a natural-looking result. (A patch
test is required for this!) I’d also suggest buying the HD BrowTec
pencil to keep that defined look. It’s an absolute must-have for me!
Another treatment I would really recommend would be LVL lash
lift or AHFrancis lash extensions. The LVL lash lift lengthens and
defines your lashes with a tint. They’re very low maintenance.
The AHFrancis are individual lash extensions and offer a more
glamorous look. After application they can be infilled every 2-3
weeks to maintain that full effect. (Again, a patch test is required
for both of these!)
Perfect
Palette
Weddings
We’ve devised various wedding colour
combinations and ideas to consider
throughout the changing seasons
Autumn/Winter
There’s no need to play it safe with traditional dark
colours - incorporate other hues to mix, brighten and
break the rules, making the colours your own.
Mix of Metal
Spring/Summer
If you’re looking towards a wedding next year then
choosing suitable colours is a top priority. Take a look at
our favourite tones for 2017.
Citrus Style
Pinterest - MODwedding
Whether you’ve opted for
simple block colours, such
as black and white, or gone
for more diverse hues such
as aubergine, dark blue, dusk
or mint, pair your signature
colour with a twinkling of
metal and you’re sure to
glisten. Gold is a very popular
choice, but copper is the
stand-out winner for 2016
into 2017. If you prefer
silver, instead of adding more
colours, pair with crisp white
and lots of greenery for a
glamorous winter-garden
wedding feel.
Pinterest: Weddbook
Touches of citrus add a
playful, fun feeling. Add
flashes of citrus colours
to flowers, accessories or
chair ribbons in colours
such as lemon or orange for
minimal colour injections.
Alternatively, go all out!
Lemon and grey are stunning,
fresh and charming with
grey offsetting yellow to
make a harmonious colour
combination. Cadmium
orange with white, will
complement the bridal gown
and give you scope to mixmatch
bridesmaid dresses.
Gemstones Galore
Simple, Subtle, Fresh
Pinterest: Junebug Weddings
Jewel-coloured tones
are nothing new, but
complement with brighter,
pastel base colours to create
a warm, vibrant aura and
a feeling of decadence.
Sapphire or navy with pale
pink is a nice alternative to
the traditional white and
black, whilst merlot or deep
ruby with beige is simple and
elegant.
Emerald alongside pearl
and latte brown contrasts
beautifully, add in a soft
peach for autumnal
perfection.
Pinterest- Belle The Magazine
It’s back to basics for 2017
- think uncomplicated.
Grey is a standout tone for
this year, team it with blush
and ivory, coral, or powder
blue with champagne and
white for a softer take on
traditional black. Look to the
environment for inspiration
to give a natural feel to your
wedding. Dusty blue with
white and peach is beautiful
for a reception in a barn, or
baby pink with lilac and sage,
surrounded by simple white
flowers would help bring
nature into a church setting.
Weddings
Bridal
Blooms
Claire Cowling, of Thrive Floristry,
talks all things flowers
What trends have you seen emerging
so far this year?
Lots of our weddings have been very
natural, informal and rustic in style, with
gorgeous country garden flowers such as
garden Roses, Astrantia, Campanula and
Hydrangea. There have been round tied
posies and longer flowing shower
bouquets too.
What do you predict will be
popular next?
Carrying on with the country themes
and styles, natural, intricate and delicate
bouquets, along with compact designs that
feature more ‘blousy’ flowers, plus more
technically styled designs, which are perfect
for a bride looking for something totally
unique.
Which flowers are best for
which seasons?
Nature produces the most exquisite
selection of blooms in their natural seasons,
and as a florist, it’s so nice to embrace
this. spring: Narcissi, Tulips, Fritillaria
and Hyacinth; summer: blousy Roses,
Hydrangea and Peony, teamed with delicate
Astrantia; autumn: beautiful berries, Dahlia,
Crocosmia; winter: Anemone, Ranunculus,
cones and winter foliages.
What’s best if you’re on a budget?
Keep it simple. Flowers arranged informally
in jugs and jars can look really cute. Budgetwise,
you can spend a few hundred pounds,
or many thousands. At Thrive, we always
suggest checking out your local florists’
price lists, writing out a list of the designs
you’d like and seeing what you can afford.
Think about the style too - compact designs
will be much more expensive than loose and
informal designs. Make your florist aware of
the style you’d prefer and the budget your
aiming for, and they will suggest the best
designs for you.
What are your top tips for when
people are choosing a colour scheme
of flower?
Pinterest is great - it helps build a reference
library of designs, styles and colour schemes
- so useful to show to your florist. A true
professional will be able to suggest the
perfect flowers to match or compliment
your colour scheme and style, plus those
that are in season.
Which are best for pressing?
Roses! Spray roses are perfect for both
drying yourself and professionally. At Thrive
we work closely with a company that can
freeze-dry your bouquet - a process that
works for a huge array of materials. We’ve
begun creating the cutest products in
house too: a beautiful, stylised sketch of a
bride carrying a miniature version of your
bouquet, encased in glass.
Do you suggest a complementing
look throughout?
We love to carry the same flowers and
colour schemes throughout; right from
the bridal bouquets and buttonholes to
church decorations and venue flowers - it
looks gorgeous, plus it enables you to place
designs in the church, then to move them
to your reception venue. This is something
our expert team at Thrive can do for you,
to take all of the stress out of it and let you
focus completely on your special day and
enjoying every moment.
Cake!
We speak to sugarcraft expert,
Weddings
The Cambridge Sugarcraft Company
Tel: 07734842709
www.cambridgesugarcraftcompany.co.uk
Jools Chalder-Mills about some of her
top tips and masterpieces
Cutting the cake is one of the main events
at your big day so it’s not surprising people
go to great lengths to ensure their cake is
nothing less than spectacular. From the
taste to the design and decoration, sorting
your wedding cake really should be left to
the pros. When we went to meet Jools from
The Cambridge Sugarcraft Company and
chair of The Cambridge Sugarcraft Guild
we didn’t quite realise the vast amount
of options and designs people are able to
choose from. From lacing, embellishments
and handcrafted flowers, the artwork
that can be created from sugar alone is
incredible.
Jools makes cakes for all occasions; from
birthdays and baby showers to weddings,
anniversaries and even graduations! “I
make all of my cakes from home and love
every minute of it. It’s great when it all
comes together at the end and to be able
to contribute to someone’s big day. I work
really closely with my customers to ensure
everything is perfect – right from the
flavour to the exact colouring. It really is
amazing how much you can do with sugar,”
Jools tells us.
“Sugarcrafted flowers are still very popular.
They last forever! In fact, I’ve still got my
centre piece from my wedding which was
21 years ago!” she continues. Like most
things, trends change frequently but at the
moment ‘naked’ cakes are really big. “White
on white is also proving to be popular, I’ve
been doing lots of detailing and lacing for
more traditional styles in a crisp white or
ivory colour. They look incredibly effective
and often my customers choose to subtly
incorporate their colour scheme into it too.
When it comes to the flavouring, everyone
is different!” Jools said.
Alongside constructing beautiful creations,
Jools also runs teaching workshops. “I
enjoy spreading my knowledge and helping
others learn sugarcraft. This year I’ve run
several big group sessions focusing on
different topics but I also offer tutoring
for smaller groups at home. As chair of
The Cambridge Sugarcraft Guild, I meet
every third Thursday of the month to
demonstrate and perform ‘how-to’s’.
Everyone’s welcome and you don’t need
any previous experience.” The Cambridge
Sugarcraft Guild aims to promote and
stimulate interest in sugarcraft whilst
sharing knowledge and developing talent.
Their next meeting will be held on Thursday
15th September in Cambridge, so be sure
to pop along and learn something new!
Top Tips
Practice makes perfect!
Always use good quality ingredients
and be sure to store in airtight
containers
Beware of humidity (silica gel bags
are invaluable in helping to remove
moisture and helping your artwork
to set!)
Be prepared and make a detailed
plan (make note of any dietary
requirements)
Make any detailed elements in
enough time incase they don’t turn
out as you had planned
Essence Of Australia
Here are some creative and unique guestbook designs that
will add something a little different to your special day
Brides
Colin Cowie Weddings
1. Pop it in a Bottle
Ask your guests to simply leave a message
in a bottle! All you will need to provide is
a clear glass bottle with a cap along with
paper and pens. A really lovely way for your
guests to be able to write memories about
the wedding day or memories they share
with you. Simply leave the messages in the
bottle for a year and open on your first
wedding anniversary in order to really look
back on the wonderful memories.
2. Artwork for the Home
There are lots of fantastic ideas out there
for different pieces of wall art which your
guests can sign. Hanging your guestbook at
home not only gives your interior a personal
touch, it’s a constant reminder of your big
day. We love this wooden frame complete
with wooden hearts detailing your guest’s
messages. It will be used far more than your
traditional guestbook which will probably be
hidden in the loft for years to come.
3. Catch it on Camera
This is an entertaining yet easy way to
recreate a guestbook. Get a Polaroid
camera and ask your guests to take pictures
of themselves and sign a message on the
back if they wish! There isn’t always the
need to write a note, the photo itself is a
great way of remembering the day!
4. Get Creative
Why not use a printed image of a tree and
a few ink pads and get your guests to leave
their fingerprint with a short messages
beside it? This is another that would
work well hung in a frame in your home.
Alternatively, why not get your guests to
sign heart-shaped leaves.
