Coordinaring Center for Research
and Publications (UCRP) held the
7 th St. Augustine Justice and Peace
Forum on 10 February 2010 at the
President’s Conference Room, as part
of the University week celebration.
Titled “Pursuing Peace through
Justice: A Search for Authentic
Existence,” this year’s forum had as
resource person, Rolando E. Medel,
MAT (Philo), faculty member from
the University Department of
Humanities. Prof. Medel
emphasized, among others, that there
can never be peace without justice.

Abraham Pinuela, M.A., chairs of
the Social Sciences Department

and of the Humanities
Department, respectively, were the
forum reactors. Mona Pico,
UCRP Research and Advocacy
Associate, was emcee and
moderator.

UCRP engaged as AIM Policy Center research partner anew
THE UNIVERSITY of San
Agustin Coordinating Center for
Research and Publications
(UCRP) has been engaged by the
Asian Institute of Management
(AIM) Policy Center to be the
research partner in Western
Visayas in the conduct of the
nationwide 2009 Philippine
Cities Competitiveness Ranking
Project (PCCRP). This is the
fifth time for the UCRP and the
AIM Policy Center to work
together in the biennial project.
Unlike the previous studies,
the PCCRP 2009 covers only
urbanized cities and excludes
Metro Manila. In Western Visayas,
only Bacolod and Iloilo Cities are
covered in the current round. It is
funded by the United States
Agency for International
Development (USAID) – Local
Implementation of National
Competitiveness through
Economic Growth (LINC-EG)
project and the German Technical
Cooperation (GTZ).
The PCCRP aims to measure
the ability of cities to attract
investments and residents. It
looks at the following
competitiveness indicators: cost
of doing business, dynamism of
local economy, human resources

This year’s forum was attended
by administrative personnel, faculty
members and Philosophy students of
the University, as well as some invited
guests. It was co-sponsored by the
Humanities Department. (UCRP)
and training, infrastructure,
responsiveness of the local
government unit to business needs,
and quality of life. The project
seeks to promote healthy
competition among cities and
assist their executives and planners
in fine-tuning development plans.
The PCCRP 2009 officially
started in October last year but was
held in abeyance because of the May
2010 campaign and elections. It is
set to resume in June 2010.
Fr. Raul M. Marchan, O.S.A.,
University president, earlier entered
into an agreement with Dr.
Edilberto de Jesus, AIM president,
for this partnership. UCRP
Director Jigger Latoza leads the
Western Visayas research team. He
is assisted by Mona Pico and
Carmen Dureza. (UCRP)
