PROFESSORS Pilar Arguelles and
Rhodora Cartagena of the
Department of Mathematics and
Physics attended the International
Conference in Mathematics
Education sponsored by the 7 th
Biennial Conference of the
Philippine Council of
Mathematics Teacher Educators
(MATHTED), Inc. This was held
last 23-24 October 2009 at the
Palawan State University in Puerto
Princesa City, Palawan. The theme
of the conference was “Setting
Goals, Directions and Standards in
Mathematics Education.”
The conference included
plenary sessions, lecturedemonstrations,
workshops, and
paper presentations with and by
mathematics educators and
researchers from both the basic
education and university levels.
FOUR fellows of the Ford
Foundation-International
Fellowships Program have in the
last two years returned and rejoined
the faculty of the University of San
Agustin. Their graduate education
in the United States of America
and the United Kingdom is
expected to provide fresh and
innovative perspectives in the
university’s programs.
The Ford fellows include Eric
Divinagracia, Liby Norman Limoso,
Leo Satana and lawyer Danny
Valenzuela.
Divinagracia had finished a
master’s degree in Arts Management
from the Eastern Michigan
University in the USA. He is
concurrently the Coordinator of
Math profs attend int’l conference

It was participated in by the
international colleagues in the field
through partnerships with Filipino
educators.
The conference was designed to
update mathematics educators and

Coordinator of the Center for
Culture and the Arts and Director
of the Little Theater. He is also on
the faculty of the College of Arts
and Sciences, teaching Dramatics.
Limoso had earned his master’s
degree in Fine Arts from the
University of Pennsylvania, USA.
He is expected to rejoin the faculty
of the B.S. in Fine Arts program at
the College of Engineering and
Architecture.
Leo Satana of the Commission
on Human Rights – Region VI,
teaches part-time in the College of
Arts and Sciences. He obtained a
master’s degree in the Sociology of
Law at the University of
Southhampton, UK.

specialists on the current trends
and issues concerning
mathematics education and
research; identify appropriate and
effective teaching and research
approaches that can be utilized in
the mathematics classroom for
students at different levels; and
help strengthen the commitment
of mathematics educators in
promoting understanding,
interest in, and appreciation of
mathematics. It also aimed to
serve as a venue for mathematics
teachers, teacher educators, and
researchers to work together and
share their knowledge in
teaching approaches and research
that could contribute to an
improved mathematics
education in the country and

Lawyer Danny Valenzuela,
former director of the University
of San Agustin Center for
Alternative Law, has resumed
teaching at the College of Law.
He earned a master’s degree in
Law from Georgetown
University, USA.
The University of San
Agustin Center for Research and
Publications (UCRP) has served
as the regional center for
Western Visayas of the Ford
Foundation –International
Fellowships Program since
2006, with Asst. Prof. Jigger S.
Latoza as Regional Partner
Representative and Mrs. Carmen
G. Dureza as Program Assistant.
