The authorised government agency to certify<br />

<strong>halal</strong> products and issue <strong>halal</strong> certificates is<br />

the Department of Islamic Development<br />

Malaysia (JAKIM). JAKIM Halal Hub Division<br />

was set to examine, certify and regulate all<br />

food and consumer products applicable to<br />

Muslim in an efficient and effective manner<br />

based on the Malaysia Halal Standard MS 1500<br />

developed by the Department of Standards.<br />

Currently there are 13 <strong>halal</strong>-related Malaysian<br />

standards published by Standards Malaysia<br />

for the benefit of the industry. Please refer<br />

to www.standardsmalaysia.gov.my for further<br />

information.<br />

The Halal Park is a community of<br />

manufacturing and service business located<br />

on a common property. Currently, there are<br />

24 Halal Parks in Malaysia; with 13 of it are<br />

accredited HalMas. HalMas is an accreditation<br />

given to the Halal Park Operators who<br />

complies with the requirements under the<br />

HDC Designated Halal Park Development<br />

Guidelines. Among the main Halal Parks<br />

in Malaysia are Biotech Halal Clusters,<br />

Agriculture Clusters, Halal Industrial Clusters,<br />

and SME Halal Clusters. The main objective<br />

of its existence is to improve the economic<br />

performance of the participating companies<br />

while minimising the environmental impacts.<br />

Components of this approach include<br />

green design of park infrastructure, cleaner<br />

production, pollution prevention, availability<br />

and accessibility of raw materials and<br />

ingredients, energy efficiency, intercompany<br />

linkages, consolidated services from public<br />

agencies and linkages for marketing.<br />

In developing technologies to detect non<strong>halal</strong><br />

components in end products, there are<br />

three major research & development centres<br />

for <strong>halal</strong> in Malaysia, namely:<br />

<br />

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM),<br />

<br />

International Islamic University of<br />

Malaysia (IIUM), and<br />

<br />

Management (IHRAM), Universiti Sains<br />

Islam Malaysia (USIM)<br />

The functions of these centres are also to<br />

promote research and development in<br />

innovation of <strong>halal</strong> products, and to analyse<br />

<strong>halal</strong> authentication respectively.<br />

The Malaysian government has undertaken<br />

various efforts to promote the development<br />

of <strong>halal</strong> products and to enhance Malaysian<br />

export in the international market. Leveraging<br />

on its global connectivity, the government has<br />

been promoting credibility and confidence<br />

of Malaysia’s <strong>halal</strong> products among foreign<br />

buyers and consumers. Today, Malaysia has<br />

been globally recognised and viewed by<br />

other Muslim countries as a leading nation in<br />

the global <strong>halal</strong> trade.<br />
