(JAKIM)<br />
The history of the Department of Islamic<br />
Development Malaysia (JAKIM) can be traced<br />
all the way back to 1968 when the Malaysian<br />
Council of Rulers decided that there was a<br />
need for a national body that could mobilise<br />
the development and progress of Muslims in<br />
Malaysia. The consensus led to the inception<br />
of the National Council of Islamic Affairs of<br />
Malaysia, chaired by the Prime Minister, Yang<br />
Teramat Mulia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-<br />
Haj, the objective to protect the purity of faith<br />
and the teachings of Islam.<br />
In conjunction with the formation of the<br />
Malaysian Federal Territory in 1974, the<br />
council was later expanded to become the<br />
Religious Division under the Prime Minister’s<br />
Department. Ten years later, it was renamed<br />
Islamic Affairs Division (BAHEIS) with a wider<br />
scope of responsibilities coordinating the<br />
Islamic affairs in Malaysia.<br />
JAKIM’s early involvement with <strong>halal</strong> began<br />
in 1974 when it took up the task of giving<br />
out written confirmation status of <strong>halal</strong> on<br />
consumer food products and goods produced<br />
in the country. The exercise was carried out by<br />
the Research Centre of BAHEIS and Malaysian<br />
companies that were in compliance with the<br />
<strong>halal</strong> criteria were issued <strong>halal</strong> certification<br />
letters.<br />
On 1 January 1997, JAKIM was officially<br />
established by the government of Malaysia<br />
to take over role of BAHEIS as the appointed<br />
body responsible in coordinating the<br />
development and progress of Islamic affairs.<br />
Beginning in 1994, <strong>halal</strong> confirmation was<br />
given in the form of certificate with a <strong>halal</strong><br />
logo. On 1 September 2002, the government<br />
decided that all <strong>halal</strong> certification activities<br />
would be conducted by JAKIM’s Food and<br />
Islamic Consumer Product Division, with a<br />
small management team of 28 officers.<br />
Due to the rapid development of the food<br />
industry in this country and in order to<br />
meet the needs of the Muslim population,<br />
on 17 November 2005, the Public Service<br />
Department of Malaysia approved a total<br />
of 165 positions from different schemes,<br />
grades and designations to create a new<br />
establishment called the Halal Hub Division.<br />
THE MALAYSIA HALAL LOGO<br />
The <strong>halal</strong> logo refers to the logo issued by JAKIM/ JAIN/ MAIN and contains:<br />
An eight cusp star at the centre of a circle;<br />
The Arabic word – “HALAL” at the centre of the star;<br />
Followed by “HALAL” in Roman alphabets below it;<br />
The word “Malaysia” written in Roman alphabets<br />
and in Arabic within the circle of the logo; and<br />
Two small five cusp stars positioned to separate the<br />
Roman alphabets from the Arabic word mentioned.<br />
