Lupo Glacier (Orobic Alps)
Snow cover measurements and mass balance evaluation
Systematic snow cover measurements have
been going on at the Lupo Glacier each summer
season since 1996. The project, which
involved five others sites in addition to this
one, was conceived and coordinated by
the SGL and named “Evoluzione del manto
nevoso residuo annuale” (Evolution of the
residual annual snow cover). Coordinated
by Stefano D’Adda, an SGL team has sur-

veyed the Lupo Glacier 3 times each season,
in accordance with the following timings.
• first 10 days of June: accumulation
measurements at the 3 sample locations.
with stratigraphic test on location 2.
• second half of July and end of August/
beginning of September: residual accumulation
measurement at the 3 sample
locations.

The maximum
thickness was measured
in 2001, while
the scantiest accumulation
season
was the 2006/2007
one. With 463 cm of
total accumulation,
2008 ranked 4th in
our short historical
series.
