Hamburger Mary’s on the Southbank near San Marco is
known for being LGBTQ-friendly with nightly drag
shows. After years of hard work and self-discovery,
two Drag Queen regulars dazzle Jacksonville audiences with
high-energy dances and personalities as large as their hair.
Get to know these lovely ladies and what it takes for them
to be stars.
You’ve gotta have Faith
Jacksonville native Faith Taylor
has been performing in drag for 13
years.
“When I first started I was
going to the gay bars as a young
gay boy, and I always swore I
stage,” she says. “You couldn’t pay
me enough money to put me in
heels and a dress on stage.”
But with encouragement from
Jade Jolie (RuPaul’s Drag Race),
Taylor competed in her first talent
show. “I did ‘Dirrty’ by Christina
Aguilera. ... I had on this god-awful
red-fringe outfit with these little
black booties. ... And I rocked it.
I won the talent show that night.
From that point on, I was Faith.”
After building her brand from
the ground up through tireless selfpromotion,
Taylor now performs
four to five days a week at various
locations in multiple cities. She’s a
Hamburger Mary’s regular and its
Sunday show director. On stage,
she rocks leopard prints, sparkles,
big hair, and her own killer
makeup.
And what is her favorite part of
performing?
“Honestly, as cheesy as it
might sound, I love making people
happy,” she says. “I can go on
stage and make somebody smile or
give someone a glimmer of hope
that they, too, can be a star.
“People always say, ‘Oh my
God, you’re so beautiful!’
“And I say, ‘Honey, with as
much makeup as I have on you
could be, too.’ And it’s true.
Everybody’s beautiful in their own
special way. …:
[I can be] somebody on stage
that people can look up to and talk
to freely. And I [can] encourage
them that they [can] be anything
they want to be, because I never
thought that I could be what I am
now.”
And on show days, she
has her own routine.
MORNING
• First: “I gotta wake up.”
• Check Facebook as part of her marketing
strategy.
• “After that, I may or may not brush my teeth
before I have a cup of coffee.”
AFTERNOON
• “I usually turn on ‘Law & Order: SVU.’ That’s
usually on in the background all day long.”
• Back to marketing: booking shows, on and
off the phone, making flyers.
EVENING
• “I always make sure that I eat by a certain
time ‘cause I don’t want to be bloated by,
you know, the time show time comes. But I
also don’t want to be chewing my own arm
off halfway through the show.”
• A few hours before each show
Taylor begins her makeup,
beginning with a relaxing bath.
• And “everything gets shaved.”
POST-SHOW
• To unwind, “I have got to have some
type of alcohol to put myself to
sleep. … I deliver a very high-energy
show.”

The glamorous Dorae
The name Dorae Saunders is
synonymous with being nothing
less than “glamorous.” Hailing
from Colombia, S.C., the steady
Hamburger Mary’s performer
has been
entertaining since she was a
teenager.
“I saw my first drag show
at 15,” Saunders says. Quickly
Dorae
embracing her love of the stage,
she has been going nonstop ever
since, placing in the top 12 in
Miss Gay USofA 2016,
winning Miss Large
and Lovely 2014
and becoming
Miss Duval
2008.
“Entertaining is very fulfilling,”
she says. There’s nothing like “the
joy you bring to other people.”
Saunders also made it to the
Top 40 on NBC’s “America’s Got
Talent” in 2008 as a Tina Turner
impersonator (Seriously, Google
her right now and prepare to be
amazed).
When she stepped onto the
stage in all her glory, celebrity
judge Piers Morgan asked, “Do
you actually sing Tina Turner?”
She confidently replied, “I’m
actually going to lip-sync and
dance like you’ve never seen
before.”
Then she proceeded to shake
her ass just like the Queen of
Rock ‘n’ Roll. And the crowd
went wild.
Along with Jacksonville,
Saunders performs at venues
throughout Florida, the Carolinas
and parts of Georgia and Texas.
But the Jacksonville crowd is
unique.
“It’s more of a cabaret style
vs. night club. The majority [of
the crowd] is heterosexual. It’s a
first-timer audience.”
The scene is more made up of
open-minded and curious types
who have never been. “They see
RuPaul on television,” she says.
On show days, she follows
a routine to become her most
fabulous self.
MORNING
• Food. “You need the energy,”
she says.
• Last-minute costume
projects.
• Choosing outfits and making
her wigs.
AFTERNOON
• Practice.
• Saunders makes sure she
knows the lyrics and has
everything in order.
EVENING
• Makeup 1-2 hours before the
show starts.
• Camaraderie between
performers is a high point.
• Show time and “Off to the
races,” she says.
POST-SHOW
• More food. “You need the
energy… I perform highenergy
numbers.”
• Shower.
• And at last: “Go to sleep,
wake up, and do it all over
again.”

Gloss Goods doesn’t

One day after work, Gwynn
Mims wanted to buy some
mascara. But she realized there
was not a specialty store near Five
Points. To find a shop for such
a simple purpose would mean
a lengthy ride and a battle with
traffic.
After living in New York for 10
years, the Jacksonville native and
owner of Gwynn Mims Salon, was
used to traffic. Still, she decided to
become her own solution.
Just two years later — in
June —she opened Gloss Goods.
Her shop is marked by the
already-famous bold pink door on
Lomax Street. The New Yorkinspired
vibe brings to the Urban
Core apothecary, fine jewelry,
accessories, and gift items.

Hayley Schlesinger is a New
York-based jewelry designer
who creates earrings, necklaces,
rings, and bracelets.
Why she loves it: The jewelry
is beautiful. Mims has been
wearing one of her pendant
necklaces “constantly.” It’s a
good style for those who prefer
delicate and dainty fashion.

Details: RMS is the brainchild
of Rose-Marie Swift, a makeup
artist for more than 35
years. The RMS website says
the brand strives to create
nontoxic products that heal
and nourish.
Why she loves it: Because
of the fresh and dewey look
that this highlighter provides.
“It gives you that beachy, J.
Lo glow,” Mims says.
Wary Meyer Soaps
Details: Wary Meyer is a husband-wife
team, and the soaps are handmade in their
Cumberland, Me., home. The soaps aim for
bold designs and quality functionality.
Why she loves it: “They’re so, so, so good,”
Mims says. The glycerin soaps come in
different colors, they’re sassy and fun, and
they’re natural and healthy.

‘SAUSAGE PARTY’:
HOT DOG JEN GETS FRANK

The illiterate folks behind
Urban Dictionary define a
“sausage party” as “a party where
girls are outnumbered by guys
(by far). So basically, a f**kin
boring party where theres[sic] no
possibility of getting layed[sic],
and where the guys are
getting mad drunk to
forget about it.”
Actor Seth
Rogen and
writing partner
Evan Goldberg
countered this
terminology with
their mega-weedbrain-infused
animated
blockbuster that opened August
12. “Sausage Party” quickly
dethroned the week-old “Suicide
Squad” at the box office.
Rogen and company relished
the opportunity to comment on
social stigmas: racism, sexuality
and conspiracy theories to name
a few.
Instead of reviewing the
movie ourselves, we chose to
traumatize Jennifer Boston, the
Core’s celebrated Hot Dog Lady.
Boston was born and reared
in Riverside and has been
maintaining a hot dog stand on
King and Park Streets for 18
years. The drunken crowd loves
Hot Dog Jen on weekends when
she stands in the King Street
District slinging dogs until the
“wee-ner” hours of morning.
When asked how her dogs
are so good, Boston replies,
“They’re made with love.”
Hot Dog Jen had only seen
the clean trailer for the Pixar-like
animated farce, so she didn’t
know what she was in store
for when we invited her to a
showing.
“I was thinking it was like
food. Like how bad food was
and how they were getting
eaten and nobody would ever
want to eat again,” Boston said.
“Like I might leave a vegetarian
[laughing].
“So I’m still going,”
she said.
During the movie
(and, yes, dogs
were consumed
during the viewing),
Hot Dog Jen
alternated between
disparate exclamations
of “Oh my God!” and “I
love him! He’s so cute!”
But mostly, “Oh my God!”

REVIEWUS INTERUPTUS
When the credits finally rolled
Jen was perfectly frank.
Hot Dog Jen: What the f**k
was that?
Courtney Clark: I think they
were just high.
HDJ: I think it was a clusterf**k.
I mean I think they were high
as a kite. ... Yeah, they had to
be really stoned and really just
have an extreme amount of
time on their hands to come
up with all of that, which is
really just brilliant that they
were able to incorporate all
of that into one movie. I’m
just speechless. I was thinking
I’d be scarred for life about
hot dogs but I’m like, Oh my
God! That was nothing like the
movie was at all.
CC: How do you feel knowing
you’re cooking and killing all
this food?
HDJ: Dude, they’re too
stoned. They don’t
count [laughing].
... That’s not
even going
to bother me
at this point.
... You know
what, that’s
so far removed
from me thinking
that; I’m still in
shock. My real expression
was, “You gotta be shitting me.
Really? It’s not a bad thing.
‘Wow’ is a good word for me.
CC: Would you recommend it?
HDJ: I’d recommend getting
stoned to come see it. It’d be
hysterical. You’d be rolling on
the floor. I think it’s probably
a fun movie. It’s definitely a
deep movie. There’s definitely
some hidden aspects and
meanings ... . There’s a whole
other movie going on inside
the movie. I think, you know,
honestly, when you can step
back over the Oh my God!
[moments]. I don’t even know
what to think. I think it dealt
with a lot. I think the food
really represented a lot of
people’s personalities, how we
are as people, how we view
things and actually how we
act. Take the food part out of
it and I think there are some
definite issues the movie tried
to address with us as people
to open our eyes to. I think
racism was probably one of
the biggest things. It’s the
message, not the messenger.
CC: Which part disturbed you
the most? (For me it was the
HOT DOG JEN • JENNIFER BOSTON
douche and the juice)
HDJ: Oh yeah. That was like —
dude, that was intense. I felt
sad. I felt sad about the
[spoiler] because he
was his friend and
[another spoiler].
But yeah, the
juice was intense.
That was really
disturbing.
CC: Were you
offended by any part
of the movie?
HDJ: No, it was too silly to
be offended. I think it would
be the sexual innuendos that
would be offensive if anybody
could be offended. But that’s
where you go, Okay, this is a
bunch of fruit f**king. Really?
CC: What was your favorite
part?
HDJ: That there was hope. The
little one, Barry, was going,
“We have to show them. We
can change them.” That was
my favorite part.
And what was Boston’s
overall opinion?
“I think the movie itself is a
good movie. I think the message
is a great message. I just wasn’t
thinking that was coming with
food,” she said.

What if I could tell you about
a place where you can have your
cake and eat it, too?
And what if I could assure you
that you won’t feel too guilty about
it either.
Undeniably, Sweet Theory
Baking Company is that place.
This popular Riverside bakery
easily has become one of my
favorite local foodie gems.
I love it, I cherish it, and it only
takes an occasional visit to realize
just how lucky I am.
In foodie terms that means
I basically know it’s there and I
indulge my taste buds as needed.
And every time I go back I’m
amazed that I am devouring vegan
food.
Sweet Theory simply makes
some of the best pastries around.
I’m talking doughnuts, cakes,
muffins, cupcakes etc. The big
twist here, though, is that the
staff uses all natural and organic
ingredients. Yep, that’s right. And
the treats are dairy and nut free. So
if you have certain food allergies,
this definitely is the place to go.
You’re probably looking at the
photos on this page and thinking,
“there is no way these are vegan.”
Oh, but they are, and they taste
as good as they look.
When I first heard about
Sweet Theory, I’ll admit that I
was hesitant. But the possibilities
quickly turned me into a fan. With
so many great items from which to
choose, I’m going to focus on the
doughnuts.
These beauties are meant to be
seen, photographed, posted and
eaten; usually in that order.
There are so many flavors but
the Maple Bacon and Samoa are
my favorites.
If you are a fan of “The
Simpsons,” then you’ll have to try
The Homer. But the most popular
flavor has to be Yoga Pants. You’ll
have to see it and taste it for
yourself. You can thank me later.
Also try the biscuit sandwiches.
They are amazingly delectable.
Popular choices are the Double
Down & the Throwdown. Both
sandwiches come with white bean
sausage and coconut bacon. The
Throwdown kicks it up a notch
and adds Daiya Cheddar and
Sriracha. Even without the meat, it
really makes for a most satisfying
sandwich.
Sweet Theory helps me
realize the goodness derived from
eating local and eating at least a
little healthier. Yeah, I know all too
well it’s a bakery, but a guy’s gotta
start somewhere.

The August calendar contains
one of the most troubling days in
Jacksonville’s history. It also would
be the month that the voice of a
forceful civil rights pioneer, who
would be on hand that fateful day,
finally faded from this Earth.
Stetson Kennedy was reared in
Jacksonville and graduated from
Lee High School. In the early
1940s he became an investigative
journalist hell-bent on targeting
groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
As Florida editor and a reporter
for the Pittsburgh Courier, a
black newspaper with a national
circulation, he sometimes would
join demonstrators attempting to
desegregate whites-only lunch
counters.
Kennedy was determined
to damage the Klan and found
heroic ways to broadcast minutes
of meetings and publish names
of police officers, politicians
and judges who were white
supremacists. So it was no accident
that he was on hand Aug. 27,
1960, at the local Woolworth’s
Five and Ten Cent Store on Hogan
Street near Hemming Park (now
Hemming Plaza), where one of
several NAACP Youth Council
sit-ins that month was planned.
Ostensibly on hand to witness and
chronicle a piece of civil rights
history, he soon was caught up in
something much more ominous.
Numerous reports say that
Kennedy, 44 at the time, had
warned Jacksonville police that
Klan members planned to attack
demonstrators who once again
vowed to sit among whites having
lunch at Downtown department
store lunch counters. A separate
demonstration was planned the
same day at the W.T. Grant Co.
Department Store on Main Street.
at a time when about 45 percent of
the city’s population was black.
Despite the presence of
a handful of policemen, 150
white men wielding ax handles
and baseball bats went after the
demonstrators and black bystanders
during what has become known in
local lore as Ax Handle Saturday.
At first, Kennedy tried to outrun
those wielding the wooden
weapons. Fast falling behind the
fleeing protesters, Kennedy had
the wisdom to fall back within
the ranks of members of his own
race who apparently were clueless
about where his sympathies really
resided.
“Whites were looking for any
black,” Kennedy would write for
the Courier. “They would surround
him, knock him down, kick him,
whack the hell out of him.”
The melee left dozens wounded
and Jacksonville’s reputation
stained, although there was little
coverage in the local press of the
violence that left 50 people injured.
It wasn’t until members of
the Boomerangs, a black gang,
interceded on behalf of the fleeing
protesters that police arrived en
force to make arrests. Several
reports said 14 whites and 48 blacks
were carted off to jail. Conflicting
media accounts put arrest numbers
between 42 and 150.
Three months later, lunch
counter sit-ins and the picketing of
Downtown businesses resumed.
But by the spring of 1961, local
business leaders and the NAACP
agreed that lunch counters in
Downtown Jacksonville would
be fully integrated — beginning
with Woolworth’s. Other dominoes
eventually would fall, including
government parks and schools.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964,
signed on yet another August day
by President Lyndon B. Johnson,
changed national laws that had
allowed separate water fountains,
bathrooms and stores.
In 2010, despite lingering
opposition, the City Council
finally would recognize Ax Handle
Saturday, authorizing a plaque for
Hemming Plaza to acknowledge
the events of Aug. 27, 1960.
Kennedy would pass from this
Earth in 2011 — on yet another
hot August day — content that his
voice finally had been heard more
than half a century later.
With just a couple of months
until the centennial of his birth,
Kennedy’s extended view on man’s
inhumanity to his fellow man lives
on amid the last verse of folk singer
Woody Guthrie’s song, “Stetson
Kennedy.”
“If we fix it so’s you can’t make
money on war. We’ll all forget what
we’re killing folks for. We’ll find us
a peace job equal and free ...”
Although no formal celebrations
are planned to commemorate Ax
Handle Saturday, Kennedy’s life
soon will be celebrated with even
more music.
