In the Carriage House Violins workshop, we treat every instrument

W.E. HILL AND SONS 

LONDON 1892 

Begun in 1880 by William Ebsworth 

Hill, the London-based company of 

W. E. Hill & Sons grew to become 

one of the most important 

in violin-making history 

for over 100 years. As 

leading experts on 

historic Cremonese 

instruments, W. E. and 

his four sons handled the 

restoration and sales 

of the world’s finest 

instruments, including those 

of Stradivari and Guarneri. 

CARLO CARLETTI PIEVE DI CENTRO CIRCA 1920 

One of the most respected copyists of the early 20th century Bolognese 

school, Carlo Carletti was born in 1873 in Pieve di Cento and died there in 

1941. After training with Giuseppe Fiorini and Ettore Soffritti, he moved to 

Milan to work at Leandro Bisiach’s famous workshop. We believe his son 

Natale Carletti, who took over the family workshop in 1941, worked with 

him on this violin.

PIETER ROMBOUTS AMERSTERDAM CIRCA 1690 

Celebrated Dutch luthier Pieter Rombouts (1667–1728) trained with his stepfather Hendrik Jacobs, 

believed to have been a student of Nicolò Amati. From the workshop he shared with Jacobs in central 

Amsterdam, Rombouts produced violins, violas, and cellos, as well as pochettes and viols. Rombouts’ 

early instruments, such as the violin offered here, were made following the styles of Jacobs, 

Jacob Stainer, and Amati. As was the practice of violin makers of his time, Rombouts’ 

instruments were often labeled Amati. 

GREGG ALF ANN ARBOR AND VENICE 2014 

American luthier Gregg T. Alf (b. 1957) is one of the leading makers in the 

world today. A graduate of the International Violin Making School in Cremona, 

he returned to the United States in 1984 to found the Curtin & Alf workshop 

with renowned luthier Joseph Curtin in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1995, Alf 

established Alf Studios, an independent business with workshops in Ann 

Arbor and Venice, Italy, where he currently builds instruments for the top 

string players in the world. Clients who have performed on Alf’s violins include 

the luminaries Ruggiero Ricci and Elmar Oliveira, as well as members of the 

Berlin, London, and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras.

PHILIP IHLE LONDON 2015 

Luthier Philip Valentin Ihle studied 

violin making at the Cremona 

International School of Violin 

Making before taking a job in 

repair and restoration at Wilhelm 

Geigenbau in Switzerland. In 2005, 

he relocated to London, where he 

worked at Florian Leonhard Fine 

Violins for several years. In 2013, 

Ihle opened his own business, Ihle 

Violins, in central London, where 

he currently makes and restores 

violins, violas, and cellos. Ihle won a 

silver medal for workmanship for his copy of 

the Rouse-Boughton Stradivari violin entered 

into the 2015 Violin Society of America 

International Competition. He has appeared 

as a guest lecturer at the Association of 

Swiss Violin and Bow Makers and the British 

Violin Making Association, and his London 

workshop was featured in the July 2014 

issue of The Strad. 

ANDREW RYAN BOSTON 2015 

American maker Andrew Ryan was trained at Peter Paul Prier Violins, the 

Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City, Utah, and at Edward 

Withers in London. As workshop foreman at Reuning & Son Violins in Boston 

from 1994 to 2011, he oversaw the restoration of many fine and important 

instruments. In 2004, he was one of eight violin makers invited to the first 

Amiata Summit, a biannual meeting of international violin makers founded by 

American luthier Gregg T. Alf, dedicated to exploring future developments in 

violin making. Ryan is a frequent lecturer at violin-making conferences, and 

a published author in The Strad, where his articles on the work of Giuseppe 

Guarneri del Gesu have appeared.

NEIL KRISTOF ERTZ EDINBURGH 2016 

Scottish luthier Neil Kristof Ertz (b. 1966) studied at the Newark School of Violin Making. 

Before establishing his own workshop in Cambridge, England, in 1997, he worked for 

some of the leading restoration workshops in Holland, France, and Germany, including 

Geigenbau Machold and the workshop of Roger Hargrave. Ertz returned to his native 

Scotland in 2009, where he currently builds instruments based on the models of the 

Cremonese masters from his Edinburgh workshop. He won first prize at the International 

Violin Making Competition in Querétaro, Mexico, in 2001. 

ANTOINE CAUCHE ANGERS 2015 

A native of Toulouse, France, Antoine Cauche (b. 1979) attended the 

Newark Violin Making School in England, then studied with Patrick 

Robin in Angers before establishing his own workshop there in 

2008. Many of his instruments have won top awards in prestigious 

international competitions, including three first prizes for a Baroque 

violin at the 2004 British Violin Making Association Competition 

in London, as well as a gold medal for a cello and a silver medal for 

a violin at the Violin Society of America Competition in 2008. His 

instruments are played by professionals and students worldwide. 


DAVID BURGESS 

ANN ARBOR 1980 

Among the most celebrated 

American makers working today, 

David Burgess has won more 

violin-making contests than any 

other violin maker in history. Born 

in Princeton, New Jersey, Burgess 

played the violin before becoming 

interested in violin making. After 

working for several years with 

Hans Weisshaar in Los Angeles, 

California, he moved to Ann Arbor, 

Michigan, to establish his own 

workshop in 1976. Having won 

numerous gold medals, Burgess 

was designated “Hors Concours” by 

both the Violin Society of America 

and the American Federation of 

Violin and Bow Makers, and was 

the first American to win the 

Stradivari International Triennale 

Instrument Making Competition 

in Cremona, Italy. His instruments 

are extremely desirable and are 

commissioned by top players 

throughout the world. 

NICOLAS GILLES MONTPELLIER 2016 

A native of Montpellier, France, Nicolas Gilles (b. 1977) trained both as a 

musician and instrument maker. After studying at the Mirecourt and Newark 

Schools of Violin Making, he worked in violin restoration for Charles Luc 

Hommel in Marseille. Gilles returned to Montpellier in 2000 to work with 

Frederic Chaudiere before establishing his own workshop in 2001. He 

has won the highest honors for his work in international competitions, 

including multiple gold medals in the Violin Society of America 

International Competition of 2004. His instruments are in high demand 

among professional musicians worldwide.

JOHANN UDALRICHUS EBERLE PRAGUE CIRCA 1740 

Johann Udalrichus Eberle (b. 1699 in Austria, d. 1768 in Prague) was an apprentice of 

Thomas Edlinger III, based in Prague. Eberle established his own shop in 1727, where he 

was prolific and versatile in his output of instruments. He is considered one of the most 

important makers of the 18th century Prague school. 

This cello, built around 1740, is a prime example of Eberle’s distinctive style and use of 

the finest materials. 

MARIO GADDA MANTUA 1982 

Italian maker Mario Gadda (b. 1931 in Mantua–d. 2008 in Mantua) 

was a student of his father, the renowned maker Gaetano Gadda 

(1900–1956), who studied and worked with Stefano Scarampella 

and took over the Scarampella workshop in 1925. Mario Gadda built 

instruments together with his father based on models by Scarampella 

and master Cremonese makers, while developing his own style and 

models. He inherited the Gadda workshop after his father’s death in 

1956, where he continued the instrument-making tradition of his family. 


CHARLES ADOLPHE MAUCOTEL 

PARIS 1854 

French luthier Charles Adolphe 

Maucotel was born in 1820 in Mirecourt 

and died in Paris in 1858. After 

apprenticing in Mirecourt, he moved to 

Paris in 1839 to work for Jean-Baptiste 

Vuillaume, who appointed him as 

foreman of his famous workshop. In 

1844, Maucotel established his own 

business in Paris, where he built highly 

regarded Cremonese violins, violas, 

and cellos, winning medals at the Paris 

World’s Fairs held in 1844 and 1855. 

He was the younger brother of Charles 

Maucotel (1807–1860), also a violin 

maker working in Paris. 

CHARLES JACQUOT PARIS CIRCA 1850 

French luthier Charles Jacquot was born in Mirecourt in 1804 and died 

in Paris in 1880. He began an apprenticeship with Didier Nicolas in 1819, 

then moved to Nancy, France, in 1823. He established his own business in 

1827 and married into the family of J. B. Vuillaume when he wed 

Vuillaume’s sister. In 1857, Jacquot left his Nancy workshop to his 

son Pierre Charles Jacquot (1828–1900) and moved to Paris, where 

he continued to build instruments and assisted in the development 

of the Paris Conservatory Instrument Museum, founded in 1861. 

Jacquot’s instruments won several awards in World’s Fairs held 

in Paris and London between 1849 and 1866.

The Jay Haide Modele Artistique à L’ancienne family of instruments was 

developed over many years of collaboration between violin makers Jay Ifshin and Haide 

Lin, who studied the varnish techniques of master European luthiers. These instruments

Celebrated French bow maker 

Marie Louis Piernot (1880– 

1959) apprenticed in Mirecourt 

with Charles Nicolas Bazin until 

1900, when he moved to Paris to 

work for Joseph Arthur Vigneron 

(Vigneron père). A very prolific 

maker, his bows bear the 

stamps of the various violin 

shops he worked for, including 

Léon & René Bernardel, Pierre 

Hel, André Vigneron, Pierre 

Vidoudez, and numerous others.

E. Marchand for François Eugène 

Marchand, a renowned restorer 

and repairer. 

W.E. HILL AND SONS

JAMES TUBBS 

English bow maker James Tubbs 

was born in London in 1835 and 

died there in 1921. Known as the 

“English Tourte,” he is one of the 

most important bow makers 

in history. James trained and 

worked with his father William 

until 1858, when he went to 

work for W. E. Hill & Sons. In 

1864, he established his own 

business housed in various 

London neighborhoods, where he 

developed his own bow model 

based on those of François Tourte. 

Bows by James Tubbs are highly 

sought after by professional 

players and collectors. 

ÉRIC GAGNÉ 

Canadian bow maker Éric Gagné 

apprenticed and worked with 

Blaise Emmelin in Toulouse, 

France, before moving to 

Brussels to work in restoration 

at Maison Bernard with Pierre 

Guillaume. He was the recipient 

of two Certificates of Merit 

at the 2014 Violin Society of 

America Competition for his 

violin and cello bows. He now 

builds and restores bows from 

his own workshop in Montréal, 

as well as through Wilder & 

Davis Luthiers.

PIERRE-YVES FUCHS 

Swiss bow maker Pierre-Yves 

Fuchs is one of the most 

celebrated bow makers working 

today. He studied with Stéphane 

Thomachot, Gilles Duhaut, 

Pierre Guillaume, and Benoit 

Rolland, and established his 

own workshop in 1997. His bows 

are in high demand among 

professional players worldwide 

and have won numerous awards 

at international competitions. In 

the Violin Society of America 

Competition of 2004, Fuchs 

received the unprecedented 

honor of winning four gold 

medals: one for each of his 

violin, viola, cello, and bass 

bows, earning him the title of 

“Hors Concours.” 

EMMANUEL BÉGIN 

Canadian bow maker Emmanuel 

Bégin began his training at the 

age of 14 with his father Louis 

Bégin in Montréal. He moved 

to Lille, France, to work with 

Yannick Le Canu for several 

years before returning to 

Montréal to open his own 

workshop. He has received top 

honors, including gold medals, 

for bows entered into the 

Violin Society of America 

Competitions over the past 

several years. 

LOUIS JOSEPH MORIZOT 

Patriarch of the Morizot dynasty 

of French bow makers based 

in Mirecourt, Louis Morizot 

(1874–1957) apprenticed in the 

workshop of Charles Nicolas 

Bazin, then worked for Eugène 

Sartory before opening his own 

shop in 1919. Known as “Morizot 

Père,” Louis trained and 

employed five of his sons at 

Morizot et Fils, which would 

succeed as one of the most 

prolific bow workshops in 

France as well as one of the 

leading exporters to the 

American market in the first 

decades of the 20th century. 

The shop was renamed Morizot 

Frères in 1937 after Louis sold 

the business to his sons, and 

remained highly productive 

through the 1950s. 

NOEL BURKE 

Irish bow maker Noel Burke 

began his career in 1989 after 

apprenticing with Charles 

Espey in the United States and 

Stéphane Thomachot in Paris. 

His bows are owned by some 

of the world’s top orchestral 

players, chamber musicians, 

and soloists. Burke has won 

numerous awards and currently 

builds bows and teaches bow 

making from his workshop in 

Carlow, Ireland.

RODNEY MOHR 

Rodney Mohr is one of today’s 

most productive and celebrated 

bow makers. He has won 

numerous gold medals at the 

Violin Society of America 

Competitions, earning the title 

of Hors Concours, and has 

served as president of both the 

Violin Society of America and 

the American Federation of 

Violin and Bow Makers. In high 

demand as a maker and a 

teacher, Mohr is currently 

codirector of the VSA Oberlin 

Bow Restoration summer 

workshops, and hosts his own 

series of workshops from his 

studio in Ashland, Ohio, where 

he continues to build and 

restore bows. 

ERIC LANE 

After receiving a Bachelor 

of Music in Double Bass 

Performance and Music Theory, 

Eric began studying the craft of 

bow making with Jon Crumrine 

in Atlanta and with Reid Hudson 

in British Columbia. Eric joined 

the staff of Reuning & Son 

Violins in October 2002 to lead 

the bow repair and restoration 

department. The inspiration he 

takes from the graceful and 

elegant models of Pajeot, Simon, 

and Maline is apparent in his 

own bows, which musicians 

admire—and purchase—for the 

beautiful tone they produce. 

CLAUDE THOMASSIN 

One of the most important 

makers of the late 19th and 

early 20th centuries, French 

bow maker Claude Auguste 

Thomassin (1865–1942) studied 

with his father, bow maker Louis 

Thomassin (1856–1905), in 

Mirecourt. Thomassin later 

apprenticed with Charles 

Nicolas Bazin II before moving 

to Paris around 1885 to work at 

Gand & Bernardel. Thomassin 

established his own business 

in 1901. 

ERIC GRANDCHAMP 

Eric Grandchamp began his 

bow-making training at the age 

of fifteen at the violin-making 

school in Mirecourt, France. 

While continuing his education 

in Geneva, Switzerland, he

Advanced Level: For a player who wants more from his or her 

instrument, our Advanced Rentals provide enhanced sound with 

higher-quality tonewoods and an upgraded bow. 

Master Level: Our Master Rentals are finely crafted instruments, often 

selected from among our sales stock, and are suitable for professional 

players as well as more discerning students. 

Rental Bows: All Advanced and Master rental outfits come with a 

carbon fiber bow, which we highly recommend for improved balance, 

stability, and durability. The Glasser fiberglass bow that comes with 

Standard rental outfits can be upgraded to a carbon fiber bow for an 

additional fee. You can order a bow upgrade with your new rental, 

or upgrade later by calling us or ordering online. 

Rental Equity Program: All JSI rental customers are automatically 

enrolled in our generous equity accrual program. 100% of the first 

year of rental fees plus 20% of subsequent years’ fees can be applied 

toward the purchase of an instrument. Equity remains valid for up to

Consistently praised by teachers and players for over 40 years, the JSI stringed instrument 

rental program has earned a reputation as one of the best in the country. Each luthier in our 

dedicated Rental Workshop is highly trained in stringed instrument repair and setup, and all of 

our rental instruments are set up beyond National Association for Music Education (NAfME) 

standards to meet our own rigorous requirements for quality, sound, and playability. 

Setup: Our skilled luthiers set up every rental instrument with tone 

and player comfort in mind. The string height, fingerboard scoop, and 

bridge placement are all very important to the comfort, playability, 

and intonation of stringed instruments. Attention to these details 

sets JSI rentals apart from others—we know that a beginning student 

has a better chance of learning well on an instrument that is set 

up to professional specifications, no matter the size or the grade 

of the instrument. 

Tone Quality: The choice of strings and placement of the soundpost 

and bridge all have a vast influence on a string instrument’s tone quality. 

Every JSI rental instrument is strung with the high-quality strings we’ve 

matched to it and is carefully adjusted to maximize tone. 

Repairs: Our staff can help you learn how to best protect and care for 

your delicate rental instrument. We encourage renters to treat their 

instruments, bows, and cases with care. However, should an accident 

occur, your rental is covered by our comprehensive insurance policy. 

Normal wear and tear, such as warped bridges and bow rehairs, is 

likewise covered. Simply return the instrument or bow to us and 

exchange it for another. 

Hand-Selected Instruments: We take tremendous pride in the level 

of attention paid to each instrument. Our Workshop manager travels 

to the Eastman factory in Beijing twice a year to personally inspect 

potential rental instruments. Each instrument we purchase meets our 

exacting standards and is free of any defects, and after it’s set up in 

our own shop, each instrument is inspected and played by our Rental 

Workshop manager before being rented. Ensuring that both the player 

and the instrument are able to perform at their best is our top priority.
