Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary
Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to Woodstock Park.
Today’s match in the Emirates FA Cup is very important to both teams for a financial and a
prestige point of view.
Our visitors are Hythe Town. Welcome to their players, officials and supporters. I would also
like to welcome our sponsors of todays match Sparshatts, and representatives from the Sittingbourne
branch of Specsavers, one of our other valued sponsors
Firstly, apologies for us all having to use the small bar today. This is because there is a wedding
party here after the game in the main bar and the conference area. Please remember
that no alcoholic drinks are allowed outside of the bar. This is a Football Association rule.
We have been lucky so far with the number of sponsors who have agreed to have a perimeter
board or a programme advert. The response has been very encouraging. You will see
new boards (not all have arrived) around the ground from Drakes Plumbing, Doves funeral
services, Sterling Roofing, Standard Scaffolding, JCB Medway, The London Prosthetic Centre,
Sawkins Double Glazing and Hidsons. In addition, Specsavers, The Cooperative funeral
services, Gordon Henderson MP, APM Metals and Bobbing Car breakers have renewed
boards. We also have had a number of programme ad renewals. Please support our sponsors.
I would include in this Ryman, Robert Dyas and Macron. Without them the Ryman
League would not be the excellent competition it is. We are very grateful to them all. If you
have a business, please consider having a Ryman business account. Contact me for information
as to how to set one up. Our club can benefit from any account set up.
You will see that the ground perimeter behind both goals has been improved. We will also
be improving the club house side perimeter in the near future, and the ground is now 3 and
a half sided!
Today’s visitors are one of the favourites to win the Ryman South this season. Last season
in the FA Cup In 2010, under manager Scott Porter, and when still in the Kent League, they
became the first team in that league to reach the first round of the FA Cup since the 1950’s.
This also made them the lowest ranked team still in the cup. They beat the then Blue Square
side Staines Town 2-0 in the 4 th Qualifying round. In the First round they travelled to League
two side, Hereford United and went down by 5 goals to 1. Brickies supporters may remember
our two matches against Hereford in a fourth Qualifying Round tie. We drew at home but
lost 3-0 at Edgar Street. Peter’s report at the time included the following, “About 50 die hard
Sittingbourne supporters made the long trip to "wildest" Herefordshire including a contingent
of four Plymouth University students sporting the "Bourne" colours. There was much amusement
as the Sittingbourne supporters were led to their own private enclosure with its own
personal "Burger" bar.
The FA Cup can leave some wonderful memories for clubs such as Hythe and ourselves.
Let’s hope this will be the year for at least one of us!
If this match is drawn today the replay is at Hythe’s ground this Tuesday (7:45pm).
From the Manager
Two games in and we have a real cause for optimism. Our biggest problem over
the past couple of years is scoring goals and to sore seven in the first two games
has been a real plus point.
On the down side we should currently be on 6 points as we had conceded two late
goals in both instances.
We are working hard to get the right blend of being solid when defending but at the
other end creating chances and more importantly scoring goals.
We have a young side and with that comes inexperience and naivety so I ask you
to keep getting behind the lads as they will inevitable make mistakes.
Hythe visit us today in the FA cup and in all fairness we couldn’t of had more of a
difficult draw. They are an ambitious club and their form towards the second half of
the season was quite remarkable. We are going to have to be at our very best to be
able to progress to the next round, however this is a one off game and having
home advantage we will give it everything to progress.
Please get behind the lads today more than ever…
From the Programme editor
Hello everybody, and a special welcome to our match day sponsors Sparshatts,
more about them later in the programme.
You may have noticed that John didn’t mention either of our first two games, this is
because he is (once again) on a cruise! I’ll mention them however and those of us
who were at the games are wondering how we don’t top the league now! Of
course the answer is that the other team scored the same number of goals as us!
I know that Nick and the team are working on what went wrong although a post
mortem of the Three Bridges game conceded that Bridges scored some excellent
goals and we were unlucky to be on the end of them. Its frustrating of course but
on the bright side our attack, led by Miles Cornwell, is now looking deadly, Miles is
having his best start in a Brickie's shirt.
You may know that I have been working
with Thermal print services and Steve
Chapman Designs on a new web site. Its
coming along nicely but I am conscious that
we don’t want to lose the 20 years of archive
material on the existing site so it will
be necessary to have some linking still to
the old site. We have however hit a few
snags so keep watching this space.
Don’t forget to have look at Tony Rickson’s
article on Sittingbourne’s 3-3 draws and
Grant Wilbur’s article on broadcasting the
FA Cup. I have omitted the non league paper
article from this programme as they are
concentrating on the National League far
too much and I shall tell them so!
Lots of work has continued at the ground
and the ground is now 3 and a half sided so
you can now stand on the far side of the
“High Tech Communications Hut”!! If you
want to.
The FA cup draw hasn’t been kind to us this
season (lets hope that Hythe think the same!) as it has been usual to draw a lower
ranked team—although that hasn’t always helped us in the past! So your usual
fantastic support is required more than ever today.
Here’s looking forward to Wembley! (What league do they play in!)
Match Reports
By Tony Rickson
Tuesday 16th August 2016
Ryman League Div 1 South
Sittingbourne 4 Three Bridges 4 Att 91
Astonishing that Sittingbourne lost a two-goal
lead to late goals for the second time in four
days.
It’s been quite a start to the season and enthusiastic
and determined Sittingbourne deserve
more than just the two points they’ve
got to show from 3-3 and 4-4 draws.
Praise them for playing with such pace and
energy that their seven goals so far makes
them the highest scorers in Ryman League
South so far this season.
But, of course, it’s a worry that they’ve also
leaked seven goals and haven’t been able to
hold on to two-goal leads twice in succession.
Sittingbourne went into the match with the
same team (and substitutes) who played so
well at Cray Wanderers on Saturday, up
against a Three Bridges side who did the
double over them last season.
And it was the Sussex side, who looked a
decent team throughout, who took an early
lead when Garrod volleyed home from the
edge of the area after being gifted the ball by
Sittingbourne.
But the home side levelled two minutes later
in their first attack of the game. Remell Davies,
who had a sparkling first half, did brilliantly
to get into space to cross to the far
post where Miles Cornwell headed the ball
back past the keeper inside the far post.
Both sides attacked well for the rest of an
end-to-end half with Sittingbourne keeper Simon
Overland, on his home debut, making
three good saves.
And Sittingbourne took the lead at the end of
the half when Overland kicked long, and the
speedy Davies cleverly read an attempted
back pass and lifted it over the advancing
keeper.
That lead didn’t last long as Three Bridges
equalised early in the second half when wide
player Fender found space deep in the area
to meet a long cross from the left and score
at the second attempt after his first effort rebounded
back off the bar.
Excitingly, Sittingbourne hit back with Steven
Ita a constant threat to the Three Bridges defence
and they regained the lead on the
hour. Ita played the ball back to Conrad Lee
and his first-time cross to the far post was
bundled over the line by Dan Tanner, another
player making his home debut, from all of
a yard.
Sittingbourne continued to look dangerous
whenever they went forward at speed and
made it 4-2 on 70 minutes when Davies
again took on the defence and forced the ball
into space for Cornwell to calmly score his
fourth goal in two games.
Surely, Sittingbourne could hold onto the
lead but they were twice caught out by shots
from outside the area and had to settle for
another draw.
The first one was a soft goal, on 86 minutes,
a free-kick played square for Sargent who
drove a low shot home from 25 yards.
The equaliser was from another free-kick – it
looked a harsh decision, this one – sub Godfrey
connecting beautifully to hit it over the
wall and into the top far corner.
So another anti-climax with lots of good
things again coming from a Sittingbourne
performance only to end up in disappointment
and frustration.
Sittingbourne: Overland, Lee, Carlse (Brunt
64 mins), Tanner, Richardson, Steventon,
Akhazzan, Wright, Davis, Cornwell,(Fuller 87
mins) Ita.
Grant Wilbur takes a look at broadcasting the
FA Cup
It's almost hard to imagine a time when The FA Cup Final wasn't broadcast - either on television
or radio.
In the days before the final was broadcast you had a frustrating wait for the evening newspaper
to find out the score.
The first FA Cup Final broadcast was on radio. In fact it was the first tie in any round to ever be
broadcast. Bolton Wanderers v Manchester City in 1926. It wasn’t broadcast nationally it was
only relayed to public halls in Bolton and Manchester and wasn't a proper public broadcast.
In the following season the BBC broadcast the Fourth Round tie between Corinthians and
Newcastle United, played at the old Crystal Palace. Corinthians were an amateur club whose
own rules had initially barred them from playing competitive football and they hadn't entered
the FA Cup until 1922, 40 years after the club's formation. Newcastle were 3-1 winners at the
Palace on 29th January 1927.
Three months later Cardiff City famously overcame Arsenal in the Final to take The Cup out of
England for the first time and that match was also transmitted to the public on radio by the
BBC.
In 1937 the Sunderland v Preston North End Final was televised in part. In the following year
runners-up Preston were back at Wembley to play Huddersfield Town and on that occasion the
match was televised in its entirety by the BBC.
A TV audience estimated to be 10,000 certainly saw an exciting finish, George Mutch converting
a penalty in the last minute of extra-time to win The Cup for the Lancashire side.
In the 2005 FA Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, Arsenal beat Manchester United on penalties,
and had an estimated global TV audience of 484 million. Quite a contrast! It was also
the first time a Final had been decided on a penalty shoot out. Last season’s final was broadcast
live in 57 different countries around the world.
Last season the Football Association negotiated a TV rights deal that will see the BBC and BT
Sport to show live games until 2021. Up to 30 matches and one more game per round will be
live on BT Sport from 2018. BBC also offer TV, radio and digital platforms for interactive coverage.
The competition still captivates fans from every level of the game and prize money won by the
clubs can have a positive influence both on and off the field. The FA distributed £25m to clubs
via the prize fund and broadcast fees last season.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FA CUP
At a meeting held in the offices of The Sportsman in London on 20th July 1871, a proposal by FA
Honorary Secretary Charles Alcock "that it is desirable that a Challenge Cup should be established in
connection with the Association, for which all clubs belonging to the Association should be invited
to compete" met with favour and was finally approved three months later.
The First Competition
The first FA Cup competition in season 1871-72 had fifteen entries. (This season more than 600 took
part.)
Wanderers, a team formed by ex-public school and university players, won the first final 1-0 against Royal
Engineers at Kennington Oval. A crowd of 2,000 attended the match and they each paid one shilling for the
privilege. The first Cup Final goal was scored by Morton Betts, playing under the assumed name of
'A.H. Chequer'. He was an Old Harrovian who had once played for Harrow Chequers.
The trophy
The original trophy, much smaller than the present one, was made by Messrs Martin, Hall & Co. and cost
£20. In 1895, after Aston Villa had won the competition, the cup was stolen from the window of a firm of
football outfitters in Birmingham where it had been placed on display. It was never recovered.
The current trophy
The present trophy, played for since 1992, is the competition's fourth and an exact
third.
Wembley Stadium
replica of the
In January 1922 the Duke of York, later to become King George VI, cut the first turf to mark the beginning of
the
building of Wembley Stadium and it was completed in under a year at a cost of £750,000.
Highest attendance
The 1923 FA Cup Final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United was the first football match at
the new stadium and it drew an estimated crowd of 200,000, vastly exceeding the official capacity. It
was only due to the good nature of the spectators and the efforts of the police, notably PC George
Scorey on his white horse 'Billy', that the match took place at all.
Great finals
The Cup Final was played at Wembley in every year, excluding the war years, until 2000. The FA Cup
has become established as one of the country's great sporting institutions. It is now over 130 years old and
yet, season by season, it generates tremendous interest not only in the country of its birth but all over the
world. The his-tory and tradition of the competition, and the pageantry of the Cup Final, is familiar to millions.
Listed below are some of the best of the finals.
If you’re going to draw a match, then 3-3 is the result to do it by.
Every time Sittingbourne have drawn by that score since the turn of the century I’ve
been lucky enough to be there.
Starting with last Saturday when Sittingbourne lost a 3-1 lead in the dying minutes at
Cray Wanderers to share the points in their opening game of the new league season.
If you’d offered Sittingbourne the draw before the game against a side expected to be
one of the strongest in Ryman South the likelihood is the answer would have been a
definite ‘yes please’.
As it was they were bitterly disappointed to get just the one point as Cray made it 3-2
after 88 minutes and nicked an equaliser with two minutes of added time played.
A spirited Sittingbourne had dominated much of the game and were full value for the
lead given them by goals by new skipper Jono Richardson and Miles Cornwell (2).
Those two late Cray goals reminded me of the last time Sittingbourne had drawn 3-3.
That was in February 2014 when champions-elect Peacehaven and Telscombe arrived
at Woodstock for an evening game on the back of a 19-match unbeaten run.
But Sittingbourne were more than a match for them and twice led through top goalscorers
Joe Taylor and Ryan Golding before substitute Bryan Bell scored a late goal on his
debut to make it 3-1.
However, Peacehaven threw everyone forward, including their goalkeeper, to score
twice in added time and level the scores.
Even then the drama wasn’t over as Sittingbourne still found time to go back on the attack,
though when Luke Girt went down in the area the referee booked him for diving
rather than award a penalty.
That was some night but so, too, was the other 3-3 – another evening game, at Met
Police, in October 2006.
Sittingbourne were 2-0 down with 70 minutes played but goals by strikers Andy Doerr
and Mark Lovell in quick succession levelled it.
Five minutes from time the Police regained their lead - but the excitement wasn’t over.
Sittingbourne forced a corner in added time and who popped up at the far post to head
in the equaliser but goalkeeper Steve Williams.
His plan to celebrate by racing straight back down the other end to his goal was never
going to work. To put it politely, good old Steve wasn’t the fastest man in the team and
within a few yards he’d been hauled down by all ten delighted teammates.
A great moment and ample proof that 3-3 draws never happen without injury time goals
and lots of excitement. When’s the next one going to be?
Incidentally, looking back over the records to check those games, I realised that Sittingbourne
have started the season with an away game five times out of the last six.
And even the odd one out, against Three Bridges in 2013, was away as Sittingbourne
played that ‘home’ match at Whitstable in between moving from the old Bourne Park to
Woodstock.
industry accepted approaches to cost management/
procurement. We apply these diligently and conscientiously
to each project.
Our staff regularly undertake CPD training and university
studies in order to keep abreast of developments
in the industry. In addition to our collective experience
Many of QS Consults’ clients are already involved in the construction industry with
our services complementing their own. By way of example with public sector clients
we can prepare cost studies (including market testing) to enable them to make
more informed decisions regarding proposed projects and estates strategies.
On the other hand for contractors and sub-contractor’s we provide estimating and
tendering services allowing them to focus on their core business of delivering construction
projects. Just some of our projects are shown below:
Some clients we work with may have never been involved in construction before
and may be considering a one-off construction project. As quantity surveyors we
can provide guidance on managing costs and how to minimise costs risks associated
with construction projects. Some clients we work with may have never been involved
