Fraudulent Use of Absentee Ballots<br />

Former Selectman Enrico Villamaino, a candidate for the<br />

Massachusetts House of Representatives, pleaded guilty to charges<br />

of larceny, interfering with an election official, forgery of a document,<br />

perjury, and conspiracy to commit an unlawful act for changing the<br />

party affiliations of 280 voters. He received a split sentence - one year<br />

imprisonment, but only 4 months behind bars. The remainder will be<br />

suspended.<br />

Former State Representative Stephen Smith pleaded guilty to two<br />

counts of voter fraud in a scheme in which he obtained absentee<br />

ballots for ineligible voters and, in some cases, cast their ballots<br />

without their knowledge. He was sentenced to four months in prison, a<br />

year of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $20,000 fine.<br />
