Season Preview
When UVa-Wise kicks off its 26th season of football on Sept. 1, the
Dane Damron era will officially begin. Hired as the fourth head
coach in program history last winter, Damron brings a wealth of
knowledge and experience to a team looking to rebound off a
1-10 campaign in 2015.
Most recently serving as Eastern Kentucky University's offensive
coordinator, Damron wants to "play fast" and operate primarily
in a spread offense. The first-year head coach has employed Klay
Koester as his offensive coordinator after he guided Cumberland
University (Tenn.) to 27.5 points per game and 182.6 rushing yards
per contest as their offensive coordinator last season.
For the offense to be successful, the unit will have to improve
its ability to protect the quarterback. Cavalier signal callers were
sacked 35 times last season. Additionally, UVa-Wise will have to
do a better job protecting the ball. The Cavs were -23 in turnover
margin in 2015.
Behind center, senior Jeremy Eubank and EKU transfer Brycen
Lee look to be the favorites to win the quarterback job as camp
begins. Eubank passed for 1,170 yards and six touchdowns as a
junior while Lee redshirted in 2015 after an accomplished prep
career that concluded with 3,032 yards, 30 touchdowns and firstteam
all-state accolades as a senior.
On defense, Zachary Blair returns for his final collegiate season.
The linebacker garnered all-conference, all-region and honorable
mention All-America acclaim after leading the nation and establishing
a new single-season school record for tackles for loss (28.5)
in 2015. Blair is just one six senior linebackers on this year's roster,
the group returns seniors Timmy Meador, Alvin Enahoro and Tray
Billups. Fellow senior Chris Flood returns after missing last season
due to injury while Ed Massaquoi made the transistion to linebacker
this spring.
Andre Hamilton returns in the secondary after earning Honorable
Mention All-MEC honors in 2015. The Stafford native led the
league in passes defended (break ups plus interceptions) with 15
last year.
Up front, honorable mention all-conference selection Ben Funny
returns after posting 41 tackles and 3.5 sacks as a sophomore.
Now under the direction of defensive coordinator Shap Boyd, fans
should expect the Cavs to line up in an odd front defense in most
situations. Boyd is a coaching veteran who has had stops across all
levels of collegiate football. In his most recent stint as a defensive
coordinator at Muskingum University of Ohio, he assembled a
defense that ranked top 25 nationally against the run.
Following its season opener at Tusculum College, UVa-Wise will
play 10 consecutive Mountain East Conference opponents. A
year ago, the league produced two playoff participants, including
national runner-up Shepherd University.
UVa-Wise Picked 10th in Preseason MEC Poll
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - - First-year Head Coach Dane Damron's UVa-Wise Cavaliers were picked to finish tied for 10th in the annual
Preseason Mountain East Conference Poll. Voted on by the league's coaches, the poll was released Wednesday prior to the start of the
conference's football media day.
Defending conference champion and national runner-up Shepherd University was tabbed as the preseason favorite as the Rams picked
up 99 points and nine first place votes. Fellow 2015 Super Region I playoff qualifier the University of Charleston (92) was picked second
and garnered two of the 11 first place votes.
Concord was chosen third with 74 points, followed in a pack by Glenville State (61), Fairmont State (58), Notre Dame (58), West Liberty
(55) and West Virginia State (49). West Virginia State (23), Urbana (18) and UVa-Wise (18) rounded out the poll.
UVa-Wise (1-10, 1-9) returns nine starters on defense, including preseason All-America selection Zachary Blair. The linebacker led the nation
in tackles for loss (28.5) as a junior and established a new single-season UVa-Wise record in the process. Damron will be looking to
turnaround a program that has tallied five wins over the last three seasons.
Shepherd (13-1, 10-0) is coming off a historic season in 2015 that saw the Rams advance to the NCAA Championship game. The Rams
return quarterback Jeff Ziemba, the MEC Offensive Player of the Year, as well as All-America wide receiver Billy Brown to headline the
offense. The SU defense features a strong linebacker corps led by James Gupton and Octavius Thomas, and are backed up in the secondary
by Tre Sullivan, C.J. Davis and Adam Coles.
Charleston (9-2, 10-2) looks to build on a record setting 2015 campaign that saw the Golden Eagles make their first NCAA postseason
appearance. UC returns eight starters from an offense that averaged over 41 points per game, including All-America offensive lineman
Justin Johnson and first team All-MEC receiver Joey Augustin. The defense will look to lower its 27 points per game average, and will do
so with first team All-MEC performers Rhakeem Stallings, Zaire Lewis and James King leading the way. Charleston also brings back All-
America punter Brett Benes to handle the kicking duties in 2016.
Concord (5-5, 5-5) will be led in 2016 by Paul Price, the longtime defensive coordinator who took over in December after Garin Justice
departed to become an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic. Price inherits an offensive unit that will rely heavily on four-year starter Brian
Novak at quarterback and the dynamic athleticism of Jermeil Douse. CU has just three returning starters on defense, though, with two
of those coming in the secondary with Jeremiah Johnson and Chaudlier Shepherd combining for five interceptions and 21 pass breakups
last year.
Glenville State (7-4, 6-4) will rely on several new players in 2016 with just six total returning starters from last year's team. The Pioneers
have just one returning starter on offense this year in wideout Dante Absher who had 64 catches for 811 yards and 10 touchdowns last
season. Among the five returning starters on defense is leading tackler and first team All-MEC pick Marcus Umu. The Pioneers, though,
do have eight players with experience on the defensive line coming back, led by Alex Robinson, who finished with 10.5 tackles for a loss
and four sacks last year.
Coming off a third place finish in the MEC a season ago, Fairmont State (6-4, 6-4) returns 15 starters in 2016, including five that earned
all-conference honors. The Falcons feature one of the top quarterback-wide receiver duos in the league in Cooper Hibbs and Fabian
Guerra. On defense, FSU has nine of 11 starters back, including corner Jacob Jean-Charles and linebacker Marcus Porter, both of whom
were first team All-MEC picks in 2015.
Notre Dame (5-6, 5-5), under the direction of first-year head coach Mike Jacobs, brings back a bevy of offensive weapons to help build
off of last season. D.J. Green was voted as the MEC Offensive Freshman of the Year last season after rushing for 1,132 yards, and will be
joined in the backfield once again by Malik Grove who led the league in total offense in 2015. On top of that, the Falcons have the leading
active receiver in the league in Mitchell Shegos. On defense, NDC will have to replace its top four tacklers, but return a pair of players
who ranked among the league leaders in sacks in Claudy Mathieu and Jonah Harper.
West Liberty (5-5, 5-6) is seeking its ninth winning season under head coach Roger Waialae in 2016. The Hilltoppers will rely on dualthreat
quarterback Dakota Conwell who has thrown for 4,342 yards and 46 touchdowns to go with 989 yards and 12 more scores on the
ground. Conwell will have multiple weapons at his disposal, including speedy wideout and kick returner Anton McCallum. Three-time
All-MEC defensive tackle Darnell Vickers anchors the WLU defensive line and a healthy secondary looked much improved in spring drills.
West Virginia State (5-5, 5-6) looks to continue its improvement under four-year head coach Jon Anderson. The Yellow Jackets have two
of the top players in the league on both offense and defense in quarterback Matt Kinnick and linebacker Dennis Gardeck. Kinnick led
the league in passing per game last year with 280 per game, while Gardeck was sixth in the conference tackles (93) and second in sacks
(11). The duo will try to help WVSU to its first winning season since 2008.
Del Smith returns to his alma mater to lead the West Virginia Wesleyan (2-8, 2-8) program in 2016. Smith will rely on All-MEC tailback
Michael Anderson to help carry the offensive load, and also has quarterback Ryan Deal returning after throwing 13 touchdowns against
just two interceptions in five games last year. The Bobcats will need to shore up a defense that surrendered over 500 yards and 44 points
per game.
With a full season under his belt, Urbana (1-9, 2-9) head coach Tyler Haines aims to improve on last year's 2-9 ledger. UU returns its most
consistent offensive threat from last season in wideout Trevon Saunders, a second team All-MEC honoree who had eight touchdowns
and 144 all-purpose yards per game. Six starters return on defense led by safety André Cliff, who ranked among the team leaders in
tackles and also had two interceptions.
UVa-Wise will have the honor of being the first MEC team to begin play when the Cavs kickoff at Tusculum on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m.
Later that night, Urbana travels to Glenville State for the first conference game of the year. The eight MEC teams will begin their season
on Saturday, Sept. 3.
HEAD COACH Dane Damron
Dane Damron was
named the fourth head
football coach in school
history in December of
2015. A native of
Grayson, Kentucky,
Damron comes to the
College after a sevenyear
stint at Eastern
Kentucky University.
While with the
Colonels, Damron spent
five years as the team’s
offensive coordinator.
A 22-year coaching
veteran, he has been
known for his offensive
prowess. A year ago,
Damron’s offense set
a NCAA FCS record for
offensive snaps in a game with 123 against Murray
State. In 2012, Eastern Kentucky averaged more than
200 rushing yards and 200
passing yards per game. The Colonels rushed for at least
1,700 yards in each of Damron’s five years
directing the offense.
During Damron’s tenure as offensive coordinator, Eastern
Kentucky posted at least six wins in all five seasons
he oversaw the offense. The Colonels tallied eight wins
in 2012 before posting nine victories in 2014. Overall,
Damron’s teams recorded 69-47 wins and losses during
receivers and tight ends
coach at his alma mater,
Eastern
Kentucky University.
The Colonels played in the
NCAA FCS Playoffs twice in the five seasons, including 2014 when
EKU finished 9-4 overall,
averaging 31.2 points per game and over 400 yards per game in
total offense.
Koester coached 2013 East-West Shrine All-Star Game participant
Tyrone Goard as well as Devin Borders, Ohio Valley Conference
Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-American at EKU. The
Colonels produced an all-conference receiver three consecutive
campaigns from 2011-13.
He has also served as the kickoff return coordinator during his second
tenure at EKU, with the Colonels ranking 12th nationally in kickoff
return yards in 2014 and 13th in 2010. Jeremy Caldwell was the
Colonels win back-to-back OVC Championships. He assisted the
offensive coordinator with the pass game for that week’s game
a myriad of injuries on the offensive line, with the team starting nine
difference combinations in 11 games. Quarterback Justin Snyder
threw for 2,147 yards and 20 touchdowns while running backs
Austin Chaplin, Brandon Byrd and Moses Cornelius combined for
1,510 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.
