herself from him. It wasn’t the look
of a woman in love but a woman
unattached & guarded. This hurt
him the most.
He cleared his throat and started,
“There’s no excuse for what I did to
you, to us. All I can say is that I found
myself in a place I didn’t know how
to navigate and so I defaulted to
what I know how to do best which is
to run. The night we celebrated your
birthday, my brother died. I shut off
my phone and didn’t find out until
the next morning on my way to get
us breakfast. Everything else is a
blur. All I know is that even though
I was home, a place where I once
was always able to find refuge, I felt
lost. Anything I’d done in the past
that helped me find peace wasn’t
working anymore. The one person I
wanted to run to I locked out of my
life. The more time that passed the
more I thought there was no way
you’d take me back. I know I don’t
have a right to do this but I love you
Naomi. It took me losing you and
my brother to realize what is truly
important in life and you are a part
of it. You are my life. My life began
when I met you and has felt like it
ended since the last time I saw you.
Please forgive me, marry me and let
me spend the rest of my life making
it up to you.”
Konstantin slowly knelt down on one
knee and took out the ring he had in
his pocket. His heart was on the line.
He knew very well she could either
heal him or break him once and for
all but he couldn’t go a day longer
without knowing. He held his breath
as he waited for her response.
Naomi realized she was clenching
her skirt in her hands and tears
were falling freely down her face.
The cool breeze made the liquid
feel chilled on her cheeks. She freed
her hands, smoothed out the skirt
and wiped the tears off her face.
She took a deep breath and walked
right up to Konstantin. Standing
this close to him she could smell
his cologne and longed for him
to take her in his arms. Her eyes
moved from his face to the ring
and back. She knelt down next to
him and took his hands in hers. She
knew now what she had to do, what
she needed to do. She took another
long steadying breath and looked
him right in the eyes before finally
pouring her entire heart out to him.
She knew from this night forward
their lives would never be the same.
