JULY <strong>2016</strong><br />
The <strong>Genius</strong> <strong>of</strong> SPACE project is building<br />
innovative water and waste treatment<br />
solutions in <strong>Langrug</strong>. Block S & T is the<br />
pilot site for phase one <strong>of</strong> this project.<br />
The solutions are inspired by the<br />
genius <strong>of</strong> nature and the community.<br />
These low tech, easily maintained solutions<br />
will help to address the key<br />
challenges faced by this community<br />
such as health and well being. The<br />
<strong>Genius</strong> <strong>of</strong> SPACE project was initiated<br />
by the Western Cape Government.<br />

WHAT IS THIS?<br />
The disposal point is a sealed, filter basket<br />
that collects household waste water &<br />
provides convenient removal.<br />
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?<br />
A round blue drum is half-buried in the<br />
ground & covered with a filter to separate<br />
liquids & solids.<br />
HOW DO I USE THIS?<br />
Pour dirty water into the drum.<br />
Dirty water is kitchen, laundry and wash<br />
water only.<br />
REQUEST TO THE COMMUNITY<br />
Clean any solids left on top <strong>of</strong> the disposal<br />
point. Dispose night soil at the communal<br />
toilets. Do not urinate in the blue drum.<br />

The waste pipe provides safe transport<br />
<strong>of</strong> dirty water.<br />
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?<br />
You can’t see it underground. There are<br />
rodding points along the pipeline to access<br />
the pipe for maintenance.<br />
HOW DO I USE THIS?<br />
The pipe does the work for us and keeps<br />
our living area clean.<br />

Trees make shade & keep our community<br />
cool. They clean dirty water & are beautiful<br />
& peaceful.<br />
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?<br />
The tree is tall with leaves, flowers & fruit.<br />
There is a small garden living with the tree.<br />
HOW DO I USE THIS?<br />
Clean up the solid waste. Cover the tree’s<br />
soil with fallen leaves and twigs.<br />

Here is our GOS ‘dirty water solution’<br />
for 110 households in blocks S&T,<br />
<strong>Langrug</strong>. There are 27 disposal points &<br />
15 tree gardens. If all goes well, we can<br />
build these water and waste solutions<br />
for the whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>Langrug</strong>.<br />
