If you haven’t been around the JCC for a while, you might not
recognize us! And if you have, we thank you for your patience and
encouragement over the last 2+ years as we undertook the exciting
task of giving the JCC a completely makeover.
Immediately upon entering the Mandell JCC, you will see a beautiful
new floor around the Gallery, and interior renovations throughout
the social wing. The old offices have been turned into two new
spacious program rooms (the Lounge and the Community Room),
a Staff Lounge and an office for our Shlicha and our coordinator of
New American Programs. The old Adult Lounge, now the Board
Room, has been transformed. CaféJ got a complete makeover – with
an expanded menu and new seating. The Living Room is completely
refurbished; the kids in Kids Korner have a new home on the second
floor adjacent to the new Study – a quiet reading/work/
contemplation space for members. The 1962 bathrooms next to the
Theater are unrecognizable with all new treatments and fixtures.
Still to come is the new Innovation Hall, in the space previously
occupied by Kids Korner and the Senior Adult Lounge. This new
space – with state-of-the-art technology - will be perfect for
meetings and seminars, presentations and classes, and parties and
celebrations. It includes a kitchen, new restrooms, coat room,
and a break-out/conference room. We are already booking events
going forward from November. Call Mitch Shakun to learn more

the space.
All of this has happened because of the vision and generosity of
Joyce and Andy Mandell and the Mandell and Braunstein families.
We are all so grateful to them for their extraordinary gifts that have
made it possible for us to have such a beautiful and well-designed
building in which to Build Community. Once you experience
everything that is bright and new about our JCC, we hope you will
recognize the importance of investing in our future by supporting
our Endowment Campaign. Any of the staff can point you to the
right people to provide you with more information on how you can
be part of the Mandell JCC of tomorrow.

AUTOMATIC ENROLLMENT!
Participants registered for Fall Session 1 classes will automatically
be enrolled in the session following (Fall Session 2 or Winter
Session 1) at the same day and time. As automatic enrollment
approaches, participant families will be notified with the
opportunity to cancel enrollment for the next session.

he Mandell JCC is your community center. Join us for
a class, exercise your mind or body, enjoy a cultural
event or holiday program, or become a volunteer.
You Belong Here!
The Mandell JCC welcomes everyone regardless of age,
race, religion, national origin, or disability. Joining is easy! No
annual contracts; memberships are month-to-month with low
fees, and a variety of plans for maximum flexibility are
available. A joining fee (due with 1st payment) is applicable to
all new members.
To be eligible for the JCC member rate for classes and
programs, JCC membership must be in good standing through
the duration of the class. A class refund will be given if the
participant withdraws one week prior to the beginning of the
activity. Refunds will not be given once a class has begun.

Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is available on a limited basis for those
who qualify. Please request a reduced fee application from
the Member Services Center.
Accessibility
The Mandell JCC is committed to inclusion and to enabling
individuals to participate in social, cultural and educational
experiences whenever possible and affordable.

at least eight (8) business days in advance of a spoken

JEWISH HOLIDAYS
ROSH HASHANAH OCT. 3-4
The Jewish New Year is a festive yet solemn
major holiday which begins the Ten Days of
Awe. We look back at the past year, make
resolutions for the next, and celebrate with
family by dipping apples in honey for a sweet
year.
YOM KIPPUR OCT. 12
The Day of Atonement is the holiest day of
the Jewish year. It is a day of fasting, prayer,
repentance and reflection, ending at
sundown with the shofar (ram’s horn) blast
and a break-the-fast meal with family and
friends.
SUKKOT OCT. 17-18
During this harvest Festival of Booths, we
recall the Israelites’ forty years of wandering
to the Promised Land. We eat meals in a
temporary sukkah (booth) and shake the
lulav (palm and willow branches) and etrog
(lemon-like fruit).
SHEMINI ATZERET/
SIMCHAT TORAH OCT. 24-25
On Shemini Atzeret (Eighth Day of
Assembly), the end of Sukkot, we recite the
prayer for rain. The next day, Rejoicing in the
Torah, marks the joyous completion of the
annual cycle of Torah (Bible) readings. Adults
and children parade with Torah scrolls, eat,
dance and drink together in celebration.

CHANUKAH DEC. 25-JAN. 1
The eight-day Festival of Lights
commemorates the rededication of the
ancient Temple in Jerusalem after the
successful Maccabean revolt against the
Syrians. Each night, one more candle is
added to the menorah (candelabra),
celebrating the miracle of the oil, which
lasted for eight days instead of one.
Holidays begin at sundown the previous day.

Girls on the Run is a non-profit physical activity-based
youth development program for girls. Taught by
certified Girls on the Run coaches, this program
helps each girl understand and celebrate herself
and realize her power to change the world.
The program includes creating and executing
a local community service project to
demonstrate the strength that comes from
helping others. At the season’s conclusion,
the girls complete a 5k running event,
reinforcing their sense of achievement and a
framework for setting and achieving life goals.

The Mandell JCC Sharks Swim Team is a nonprofit member of United States
Swimming dedicated to the development of competitive swimmers through
technique and endurance development. The Sharks Swim Team is a year round
program that offers many different opportunities for swimmers Ages 6 and older.
Meets are held on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays with competitions beginning
in late October. All meets require registration, and are an additional fee.

Join Growing Great Schools’ culinary educators for
getCOOKing, a hands-on program for kids to feel, taste and
experience healthy, local food in action.
At the end of the four-week session, students and their
families will understand the physical, social, and emotional

environment. There will also be an emphasis on seasonal fall
produce and supporting the local food system through
farmers’ markets and CSAs.

BBYO Connecticut Valley Region spans throughout
Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. Over 1500 teens
participate annually within the Connecticut Valley Region,
engaging in different programmatic opportunities.
Programs include leadership development, international
travel, social, educational, athletic and community service
programming. Teens meet as chapters in local communities
and take part in regional events several times throughout
the year.

NEW COURSE: JEWISH HUMOR
Mon & Wed, 2:55-4:10 pm | Instructor: Avinoam Patt
Why are the Jews so funny? What is unique about Jewish humor? Why
are so many comedians, satirical novelists, and film directors Jewish? In
this course we will seek to answer these questions by tracing the history
of Jewish humor in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We will then
track the evolution and migration of Jewish humor across the European
continent and on to America, where the Jewish funnyman (and woman)
have transformed the cultural landscape. Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Joan
Rivers, Larry David, Fran Drescher, Sarah Silverman, Jerry Seinfeld, and
Amy Schumer have made American humor Jewish, and Jewish humor
American. We will also look at how the Jews have used laughter as both
a coping mechanism and an instrument of self-defense against pogroms,
forced migrations, and even the Holocaust. The class will also feature
meetings with noted Jewish humorists, stand-up comedians, and comedy
writers for film/television.

This course examines the history of the ancient Israelites and later the
Jews from the third millennium BCE through the early modern period
and their interactions with the ancient Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians,
Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Muslims, Crusaders, Ottomans, and
European nations until the rise of the Enlightenment in the 18th century.
Students are introduced to most of the literatures which chronicle the
major ideas, religions, cultural developments, and groups that the Jews
came in contact with in Israel and in the far-flung Diasporas.

service. Currently in development, D.I.V.E. aims to turn social action
into an integral part of everyday life through partnerships with other
organizations, easy day-to-day activities, and a variety of

different collection drives, volunteer days, and more, providing
plenty of opportunities for community engagement, with plans to
host an annual event recognizing all D.I.V.E. participants’
achievements.

Opening Reception with the artist:
Sunday, September 18 | 2:00-4:00 pm
Enigmatic narratives of spaces and objects that
relate to a home or part of a house are
portrayed as temporary and unstable in the
paintings of Shira Avidor. Her room interiors,
cots, tents, mattresses, rugs, bowls and various
objects found in a dwelling show traces of a
human presence echo an isolated and
uncomfortable place. Both beautiful and quiet,
Avidor’s work provokes contemplation of our
own spaces.

Mandell JCC
Hosted by the Mandell JCC, young Jewish
athletes will have the opportunity to take
part in a phenomenal one-day competition
with their peers from other Jewish
communities around the Northeast, including
Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York.
The JR Maccabi Games will offer competitive
matches for boys and girls in basketball,
soccer, swimming and tennis.
