Noblesse oblige
MUNICH
Munich - first and foremost known for a great number of quaint historic buildings - spreads the glamour of the 19th century
and embraces visitors with the appeal of the formerly royal Munich Residence, the Hofgarten (court garden), a picturesque
city hall and the Opera House with its golden mosaic ornaments. The luxurious flair of the city has set the standards for
the citizens' lifestyle. A relaxing laissez-faire attitude instead of a hectic pace, a broad scene and a hip urban life - Munich
definitely puts an emphasis on elegance, splendour and italian lightness.
Text Sabine Ruhland
Cosmopolitans at home in Paris, London or New York claim
Munich to be a village. This may be right in a way that in the
Bavarian capital places of different interest are in close vicinity
to each other: The shopping miles can be found next to
the arts quarter, the Munich Residence is neighbouring the
stores of the luxury brands. The best restaurants in town are
beaded in a small area and on Viktualienmarkt, the daily food
market, Bavarian dialect is spoken in a place where goods
from all over the world are on offer. Modern shopping centres
are flanking historical quarters and the old-established,
traditional craft businesses still have maintained their standing
amongst the international labels of the luxury industry.
The elegance of this metropolis is reflected in any shop
window, "Suppliers to the Royal Court" are proud to display
this special honour in their company crests and the best
designers in the world are striving for the limited and
exposed locations.
"Noblesse oblige", that is how Munich maintains the image
as a fine stronghold, an island in the midst of a clamorous
and challenging world stage, offering a high degree of
security, well-tended green spaces and an alpine environment
that symbolizes the epitome of natural beauty. Munich
cannot be compared to a lot of cities - and there is no need
to be compared - Munich is "M-unique".
Munich is one of the most attractive shopping destinations for the simple reason that the city centre represents a variety
of beauty in a confined space. This is where your target shops are easily accessible, often far off the car traffic and where
numerous arcades are flanked by modern shopping palaces.
International labels and traditional family-owned businesses, classical luxury and craftsmanship tempt the visitors to stroll
through Munich city centre in a relaxed pace, discovering unique must-haves.
Haute Horlogerie
Richard
Mille
In the ranking of the world's most expensive watches, Richard Mille and his "RM031 High Performance", limited to
ten specimen, appear among the top ten. Richard Mille has lived in the world of superlatives since he launched his
first watch in 2001. Ever since, the platinum Tourbillion watches, double chronographs, with an annual calendar or a second
time zone as well as the diamond-encrusted mechanisms have inspired a new generation of horologists. Recently,
Richard Mille opened a new store on Munich's Maximilianstrasse.
The source of his inspiration is the world
of motor sports and Formula 1®. A large
part of his timepieces have a tonneaushaped
case, a sapphire glass back bezel
and skeletonised dials. There are hardly
any flat surfaces and the sandwichstyle
case is the most expensive and
the most difficult one in production, as
every component (front and back as well
as the centre part) are bent. Watchmakers
need to work with an accuracy to a
represents wheels inside the watch
movement cut and chisled from semi
precious and precious stones incorporated
in hot brass in order to make a
perfect unit after the cooling process.
The techniques behind these innovations
require a lot of research, development
and investment.
At PORZELLAN MANUFAKTUR NYMPHENBURG ancient traditions meet concepts
of contemporary designers, a truly challenging task. "The innovation lies in
the porcelain as a material ", claims Managing Director Anders Thomas. "The craftwork
has remained unchanged, but technology is constantly being refined in order
to ensure an even more filigree way of working." The incentive for innovation is the
alliance with artists, designers or architects being invited to Nymphenburg every
year to express their outstanding artistic visions in limited editions of timeless value.
This creative crowd includes names such as Konstantin Grcic, fashion designers
express the highest level of individuality.
have maintained since the era of the Bavarian kings."
"Setting up your own private art collection
requires a certain amount of initial capital
and perseverance for at least five years."
Text Angelika Frank
Wilhelm Grusdat, Galerie Terminus
More than 100 art galleries in Munich prove the high esteem
for contemporary art. Wilhelm Grusdat is the owner of
one of the best-known galleries, Galerie Terminus. Visiting
the showroom you are surrounded by the masterpieces of
Baselitz, Uecker and Jan Davidoff. The paintings and colossal
sculptures are perfectly illuminated and arouse a desire
for art even in a layman.
But how to successfully start an art collection? "In general
I would recommend to contact a renowned proprietor of an
art gallery in order to discuss your intentions. One thing is
for sure: Starting your own art collection demands a certain
capital and perseverance of at least five years."
Wilhelm Grusdat
In the business for more than 25 years, Wilhelm Grusdat
nowadays trades first-class works of art by the most famous
contemporary artists such as John Chamberlain, Roy Lichtenstein,
Markus Lüpertz, Sigmar Polke, Robert Rauschenberg,
Frank Stella or Gerhard Richter, even entertaining a
close friendship with many of these. His recipe for success?
"I am only buying pieces of art that I am personally convinced
of. Only pieces adorning my gallery will be a delight
for my customers." According to this maxime he purchases
and sometimes sells within hours the works of art by Baselitz
and other artists. In order to acquire the best and most
interesting pieces Grusdat has access to an international
network.
Art
Munich'S best Galleries
Guenther Uecker "Artwork of nails"
His company Frame Fine Art AG in Switzerland acts as a
consultant for the most renowned collectors of art in the
world. They have trust in his instinct and expertise, acquired
by longstanding observation of the great auction houses
and by visiting museums and galleries. "You must know that
not every piece of art by Baselitz or Lüpertz is suitable to
be sold. That is exactly why it is so important to work with a
professional, when starting or enhancing an art collection."
Wilhelm Grusdat thinks little of the hype about young artists.
"In fact, there have not been any really great artists
after 1960. Names like Damien Hirst I believe are really hyped.
In any case the prices for his works are falling sharply.
Who - after 20 years - might want to look at a dead shark
in formaldehyde or enjoy faded, yellowish photographs?
Nobody in fact." Nonetheless he includes few interesting
young artists in his scope, such as Jan Davidoff, a pupil of
Günther Förg.
Starting in May, an exhibition of the works by John Chamberlain,
the American sculptor who brought the Abstract
Expressionist style of painting into three dimensions, will
take place in Galerie Terminus. This event will be followed
by exhibitions of paintings by Baselitz, Rauschenberg and
Chamberlain - all of them Grusdat's close friends.
How was he able to have access to these outstanding artists?
"It all began, when a friend introduced me to Tom
Wesselmann in New York. Later on, I was recommended
and I started offering to pay in cash. Nowadays the market
is overheated and the situation has changed. The most
difficult task is to gain access to new and excellent master
pieces of art".
But Wilhelm Grusdat remains persistent, sometimes even
for years, until he comes across those real treasures that
eventually fill the collectors of art at Galerie Terminus with
enthusiasm.
Diagnostic radiology is subject to substantial changes
and a high degree of innovation, but this more and more
at their location Burgstraße in the centre of Munich.
The MAGNETOM® Aera is the world's first 1,5 Tesla, 70
is far more significant due to high-resolution coils, which
means more comfort and a shorter treatment for RADIOLO-
development in 3T-imaging. Tim® (total imaging matrix)
Dr. Tatjana Pavicic
Dr. tatjana PaviciC
Dr. Tatjana
Pavicic
Dr. Tatjana Pavicic is an internationally respected speaker
and trainer on advanced cosmetic dermatology and surgery,
a board member of the "International Society of Dermatologic
Surgery, a medical consultant in dermatology and counts
among the international elite in aesthetic medicine regarding
non-surgical methods of treatment.
Colleagues from around the world trust in her medical expertise. In
her private practice in Munich Dr. Tatjana Pavicic only
applies the best dermal fillers and state-of-the-art techniques
such as modern laser treatments and micro-focused ultrasound
(Ultherapy®). Despite these innovative techniques, she
considers consultation and a precise facial analysis to be the
most important part of a treatment.
Surgical treatment should always be
the last option.
"A juvenile look, but not wax-like. This desire can
be fulfilled by analyzing the patient's face, including
shape, proportions and facial expression. Focusing
on a single facial area may prove counterproductive".
"One look into the mirror and a flaw to be mended becomes
obvious. What most people do not see in what way their faces
and expressions change over the years and what is the cause
and what just the consequence. I will explain to the patient
why the contour of the face has changed and where the original
weakness lies. I will explain the possibilities and the results
that can be achieved with non-invasive procedures. In case
the person's expectations cannot be fulfilled without surgical
intervention, I recommend a colleague for plastic surgery".
Following this philosophy, Dr. Tatjana Pavicic responds to another
patient’s expectation: reliable information when it comes
to aesthetic surgery. A lot of patients revisit her clinic over the
years only having small treatments to correct nuances but improving
their general appearance in a substantial way.
Besides the classical minimal-invasive treatmentssuch as
"Botox" and fillers Dr. med. Tatjana Pavicic prefers the new
non-invasive ULTHERAPY® treatment in which two or more
tissue layers in different depths are treated by micro-focused
ultrasound. Ultherapy® is the only FDA approved, non-invasive
lifting treatment that reaches as far into the skin as a surgical
facelift, to the "SMAS" (Superficial Muscular Aponeurosis
System) the layer that is responsible for the lifting effect.
can precisely follow the whole procedure on the ultrasound
Ultherapy® is the only non-invasive treatment that
reaches as far into the skin as a surgical facelift.
patient though the effect is tremendous: the tissue is tightened
by the so-called "shrinking effect".
15 minutes of treatment for your eyebrows
and around the eyes. One hour for your face.
Neck ······························
Another important issue: Ultherapy® is perfectly suited for
darker skin types because unlike laser treatment it does not
affect the surface of the skin and the pigment cells. Hyperor
hypopigmention (black or white spots) by excessive laser
treatment can be excluded.
by competent consulting regarding adequate treatment",
claims Dr. med. Tatjana Pavicic. Following this philosophy
the Munich dermatologist has gained an international reputation
being a member of various national and international
dermatologic and cosmetic societies. "Cosmetic treatment
This treatment only takes little time: neck and décolleté about
30 minutes each, the area around your eyes and brows 15 minutes,
the complete face about an hour. As a secondary effect
the reproduction of collagen and elastic fibers is stimulated,
causing further lifting and tightening within the following 3 to
6 months.
Patients require realistic prognosis.
What patients really need is reliable information and security
when it comes to aesthetic procedures. "My goal as a
doctor must be to establish trust, confidence and a longterm
relation with the patient. This can only be achieved
can only become a matter of course if doctors provide the
highest level of professional expertise and best possible
consulting."
It is not only the top location in Munich that makes the private
practice of Dr. med. Tatjana Pavicic count among the best
clinics receiving patients from all over the world.
INDIVIDUAL DIAGNOSis
For more than 80 years, generations of doctors have written a story of utmost success. State-of-the-art equipment,
a merger of 19 medical specialists and their team of 90 professionally qualified assistants at several
vlocations in the heart of Munich make the "The RadiologY Individual Diagnosis" one of the outstanding
institutes for medical imaging.
Dr. Philipp Remplik
"The Radiology INDIVIDUAL DIAGNOSIS" has not
only been successful for decades because we invest in
state-of-the-art technical equipment, but a matter also
close to our hearts is a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
"A patient feeling comfortable when entering our
offices will feel at ease with the treatment that follows", says
Dr. med. Philipp Remplik.
An overwhelming sense of team spirit, close cooperation
and the best possible practice management ensure that
doctors and assistants can fully concentrate on the issues
of their patients. "Consultation is held as long as necessary,
medical examination is done as fast as possible in order
to provide results for our patients in a timely manner."
In addition to numerous skilled staff taking care of their patients,
six locations in Munich provide a large number of
high technology devices in order to prevent patients from
any fears concerning the examination: systems for open
high-end magnetic resonance imaging "Philips Ingenia 1,
5 T" or "Siemens Aera 1,5 T" and the open MRI system
for the examination of joints, as well as a 64-slice dosereduction
CT scanner. On top, the practice at the location
Lucile-Grahn-Straße has a modern 3T MRI.
This innovative technology offers a maximum of comfort
during and after the procedure and reduces the CTdose
to a minimum in case of partial or full imaging of the
body. "Our patients feel relaxed and that adds to a positive
course of the examinations. Due to digital technology any
imaging will immediately be available and the specialist
in charge can establish a competent and clear diagnosis."
The Radiology
Service Range of
The Radiology
INDIVIDUAL DIAGNOSIS
Every patient is seen and treated as an individual having
his own physical issues. For this reason "The Radiology
INDIVIDUAL DIAGNOSIS" has 19 medical doctors, each of
them specialized in a different field of diagnostics.
• Magnetic resonance imaging
• Computed tomography
• Mammography
• Sonography / Ultrasound
• Nuclear medical diagnostics
• Bone density measurement
• X-ray diagnostics
• Spine pain therapy
• Radiosynoviorthesis (RSO)
© Die Radiologie (4)
Patients are provided with the best medical care and a maximum of attention
as the doctor in charge hands out and explains the results to his patient
as soon as the examination is finished. On this occasion the specialists
of "The Radiology INDIVIDUAL DIAGNOSIS" recommend further treatment
and therapy, if possible that is.
HARDLY ANY WAITING FOR RESULTS
Patients should not spend more time in a practice than necessary, which is
why "THE RADIOLOGY INDIVIDUAL DIAGNOSIS" is perfectly organized.
As a rule, all examinations are made within one day in order to avoid unpleasant
waiting. It only takes few hours from accepting a patient, doing the
examination, evaluating the results and transmitting them to the doctor in
charge and eventually to the patient.
HEALTH PREVENTION IS VITAL
"THE RADIOLOGY INDIVIDUAL DIAGNOSIS" offers a wide range of health
care check-ups. The whole-body MRI is able to scan hardly without radiation
in order to identify tumors and other diseases in good time. Besides
breast and prostate cancer prevention the range includes virtual colonography
for the early detection of colorectal cancer, cardio CT for the detection
of corono vascular diseases and the CT angiography for the detection of
vascular diseases of the neck and leg vessels. These imaging methods
often replace invasive examinations like coloscopy or heart catheterization.
Due to these new CT systems examinations can be conducted at a CT dose
reduction of 75 %.
Prof. Dr. med. Curt Diehm, Medical Director
At first sight, this seems to be a luxury hotel in a
most spectacular location; Max Grundig had no
hospital in mind when he founded one of the first
German private clinics in 1986. His intention was to
create a retreat that offers more time for health on
the highest level.
Until today, the human being is at the centre of attention
and not his or her illness. A broadbased team of
medical doctors, nurses and therapists takes care
of a maximum of 60 patients, applying the latest findings
in medicine and psychology. The clinic today
is based on three different elements: internal medicine
with a broad variety of specialized departments
and excellent medical doctors, a check-up centre
and the field of psychosomatic medicine.
Villa René Lalique
Villa René Lalique pays homage to the century-old heritage of the visionary artist of the same name. The Villa, built in 1920,
was home to the founder and his family during their stays in Alsace. Under the direction of Swiss Silvio Denz, Chairman
and CEO of Lalique, the legendary villa has reinvented itself by being transformed into the sumptuous setting of an ultrasophisticated
hotel with extravagant suites and a gourmet restaurant. The breathtaking wine-cellar was created by swiss
architect Mario Botta. The interior design by Lady Tina Green and Pietro Mingarelli, both in charge of the furniture and
accessories of 'Lalique Maison', lures the guests into a world of glass, art and the glamorous era of Art Deco.
© Lalique
A truly enchanting place in the midst of the natural beauty
of the Alsacian region, hidden in the woods, sheltered
behind wrought-iron gates. The outer appearance of the
villa was maintained whereas the interior was refurbished
to the highest requirements of luxury and elegance. Nowadays,
six stylish suites and a lounge are part of the historical
estate.
The modern annexe has become a highlight in the art of
glass and the art of cooking. Magnificent, light-flooded and
full of glass objects - every detail is a feast of the senses
culminating in the cuisine of two-star chef Jean-George
Klein. Together with his chef Jérôme Schilling, sous-chef
Michel Scheidler and his team he has composed set meals
to provide an insight into his creative world. Also at his side
'Meilleur Sommelier de France' Romain Iltis with whom he
has meticulously evaluated the menu in order to find com-
binations of dishes and wines complementing each other to
the fullest. Chef Pâtissier Nicolas Multon - following the credo of
TO FAll in Love with The Blue Rider
The Lenbachhaus has the world’s largest collection of art of »Der Blaue Reiter«,
one of the most important groups of avant-garde artists in the early twentieth century.
The core of this treasure consists of the generous donation by the painter
Gabriele Münter, who was Wassily Kandinsky’s companion until 1914. On occasion
of her eightieth birthday in 1957, she bequeathed more than a thousand works by
the »Blue Rider« artists to the Lenbachhaus. The group of artists known as The
Blue Rider had a big influence on modern art. The highlights are now back on
display there. Gallery Lenbachhaus, Luisenstrasse 33, 80333 Munich
TO Enjoy the Lifestyle
of the Beer Gardens
There have been beer gardens in Bavaria
for the past 200 years. They offer far more
than just a shady place under the trees. In
a true beer garden the guests must only
buy the beer and drinks, but they may bring
their own food with them.
So do not be surprised to see the people at
the next table unpacking their picnic baskets
and setting the trestle table elegantly with
tablecloth, china and cutlery and serve their
traditional meal of radishes, bread, cheese,
sausages, butter, salad. But of course you
can buy food in the beer garden too.
